TMP-Marian softball falls in state quarterfinals

It is the little things that make the difference at the state tournament.  Oskaloosa took advantage of a Monarch error in the fourth and then came through with a big hit in each the fifth and sixth inning for a 4-1 decision over TMP.

The Monarchs took their only lead of the game when Emilee Augustine scored on a throwing error by the Bears following a ground out in the second inning.

Highlights

TMP then loaded the Monarchs in the third inning with two outs but could not take advantage.  Overall the Monarchs stranded seven runners on the bases.  Three of the runners were left at third and another two at second.

Oskaloosa scored tied the game following TMP’s only error, took the lead on a two out triple in the fifth and scored two more on a double in the sixth.

Werth’s walk-off home run sends TMP baseball to state semifinals

MANHATTAN – Chase Werth hit a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday lifting the TMP-Marian Monarchs to a 5-2 win over Wellsville in the first round of the 3A State Baseball Tournament in Manhattan.

Dusty Washburn post-game interview

The Monarchs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Luke Ruder drew a bases loaded walk.

After the Monarchs took the early lead both starting pitchers really settled making runs hard to come by.

Monarch starter Cole Zimmerman was able to work out of a couple of early jams until the fourth inning when Wellsville’s Jackson Showalter delivered a two-run triple in the top of the fourth giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

TMP got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning on an infield single by Adam Gottschalk.

It appeared that the Monarchs took the lead back when the next batter, pitch-hitter Eston Brown lined a pitch all the way to the wall in left-center that scored a pitch runner from first. But Wellsville appealed to first, claiming that Brown failed to touch first. He was called out and the run was disallowed.

With the game still tied at two in the bottom of the seventh the Monarchs got a leadoff single from Creighton Renz, who was 3-for-3 in the game. Then after a sacrifice bunt and Gavin Schumacher was hit by a pitch and Wellsville was forced to bring in a reliever to face Werth.

The Senior delivered with a three-run homerun sending the Monarchs to the 5-2 win a Friday’s state semifinals.

Fellow Senior Cole Zimmerman allowed just two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two as he improved to 8-1 on the season.

Game highlights

The Monarchs will play the winner of No. 4 Riley County and No. 5 Humboldt at 1:15 p.m. Friday.

Lady Indian soccer golden in 3OT

Hays 2, Mulvane 1 3OT

MULVANE, Kan.-It took exactly 104 minutes and 35 seconds for the Hays High Lady Indian soccer team to prevail in their 4-1A Central/South Central Region #2 Championship game on Thursday evening in Mulvane. Things did not start off so well for Hays as Mulvane scored in the 11th minute off of a right side shot that hit the cross bar and came straight down and into to the goal for a 1-0 Lady Wildcat lead. That would be the only goal the home team would score.

Hays High was able to tie the game in the 35th minute when Kamryn Schoenberger was able to knock home a rebound off a near miss from Sophie Humphrey to make the score 1-1. The score would remain that way through regulation and the first two overtimes as the two teams battled heat and exhaustion throughout the evening with temperatures pushing the upper 80’s all game long.

Regulation was not sufficient enough time to settle this playoff battle as the two teams played through two 10-minute overtime periods and the score remained tied heading to the third overtime that would only be five minutes long. That is when Hays Head Coach Silas Hibbs made a strategic move that changed the outcome of the contest and the season. At the start of the third overtime Hibbs took goalie Isabel Robben out of goal and moved her to the front line to provide a pair of fresh legs for an offensive push.

It paid enormous dividends for the Lady Indians. With under a minute to go Robben was able to beat a pair of Mulvane defenders to a 50-50 ball in the middle of the field. As she broke free it forced the Wildcat goalie to come out of the net to try and force what would have been a difficult stop. Robben was then able to punch the ball by the goalie and into the net for the golden goal and game winner with only 25 seconds remaining.

Hays High improves to 11-6-1 on the season. With the win they also advance to the 4-1A State Quarterfinals where they will meet up with McPherson on Tuesday night at 6pm at McPherson College.

TMP Baseball dominant in Lakin

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Regional Semi-Final:  TMP 15, Scott Community 0 (4 innings)
Regional Final:  TMP 6, Colby 0

LAKIN, Kan.-Cole Zimmerman, Chase Werth and Tate Garcia were dominant on the mound Wednesday in Lakin as their TMP Monarchs won two games in 3A Regional play to advance to the 3A State Tournament in Manhattan. The three pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in 10 scoreless innings in a 15-0 route of Scott City in the semi-finals and a 6-0 shutout of Colby in the championship game. Zimmerman pitched all four innings in the win over Scott City. Werth threw six strong innings and Garcia the seventh inning to wrap up the victory.

In game one TMP jumped on Scott City early with two runs in the first inning and virtually put the game away with nine runs in the second inning that saw 15 Monarchs come to the plate. They put three more on the board in the third and then one in the fourth to finish the run rule victory.

Game two was all TMP from the start. The Monarchs scored one run in the first inning and three in the second and Colby never really challenged from there as TMP picked up an insurance run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth. TMP improves to 21-1 with the wins and have now won 13 games in a row. The Monarchs will travel to Manhattan on Thursday and Friday to compete in the 3A State Tournament.
