Hays High soccer tops Dodge in 2OT

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-It was a classic Western Athletic Conference soccer battle in Hays on Tuesday afternoon as the Hays High Lady Indians and the Dodge City Lady Demons tangled. The cold and windy conditions proved to be difficult to handle as quality shots on goal were hard to come by. Hays High used the strong northerly wind to control the ball on the Dodge City half of the field in the first half but could not find the back of the net as the two teams played to a 0-0 tie at the break.

The Lady Indians continued to control the ball and the pace in the second half giving Dodge City very few opportunities to score. Hays was able to place a couple of quality shots on goal only to have them turned back by some nice saves by the Lady Demon keeper. After regulation, the score remained 0-0.

The first 10 minute overtime failed to produce a goal for either team but it didn’t take long to end things in overtime number two. With the wind at their backs the Lady Indians made a run towards the Dodge City goal and Hannah McGuire found Savannah Schneider on the left side and Schneider punched the ball in the left edge of the goal to give Hays the 1-0 victory.

It was the fifth goal of the season for Schneider. Hays High improves to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the WAC. They have little time to celebrate as they will hit the road on Thursday to face Liberal.

KSHSAA honors athletic officials for dedication and service

TOPEKA, Kan. – Each year, the Kansas State High School Activities Association recognizes and honors a select group of contest officials for their dedication and service to Kansas interscholastic athletic programs. The KSHSAA Official Recognition program started in the 1999-2000 school year to honor officials who have contributed significant years of service. Award plaques are given for 20, 30, 40 and 50 years of service to the youth and schools of Kansas. Officials reaching these milestones are recognized at a ceremony in conjunction with a state championship event.

Each school year approximately 4,000 men and women, including some high school students, become KSHSAA registered athletic officials. The Association registers officials in 10 of the 14 sports it sponsors. Officials at interscholastic athletic events not only provide for a fair and safe contest environment but also play an important role as participants in the educational development of high school students.

The KSHSAA was pleased to recognize these special individuals for their years of study, preparation, sacrifice of personal time, and most of all, their enduring commitment to the schools and youth of Kansas.

Hertel not returning as TMP-Marian coach or teacher

After 33 years at TMP-Marian as a teacher and coach, Joe Hertel will not be returning next year. Hertel’s wife Cindy, through Facebook, made the announcement late Friday.

Hertel took over as head basketball coach in 1985 for the legendary Al Billinger and was an English teacher at the school. He compiled a 467-274 record during his tenure with the Monarchs and guided them to the state tournament nine times including this past season.

Hertel’s teams made four state title game appearances and won the 3A state championship in 2005 and the 4A title in 2007.

Cindy Hertel’s Facebook post:

“I am posting for Joe, who is not on FB: To my students, players and b-ball managers, I am humbled by your support and privileged to have been a part of your life. I value every one of you, and your success is my success. To my students’ parents… thank you for understanding that while I am not Mr. Social 😊, I am totally committed to helping your child in any way I can. Sometimes that means hard conversations. Your posting here means you support my expectations and also have high expectations for your child. I know he/she will be a success because of you. To my colleagues and friends… I’m am honored to know you. Thank you for seeing the real me. Teachers and coaches, keep fighting the good fight. To my family… this whole thing is a testament to the importance of family, right? To my Lord… I would do it again.

After 33 years of teaching at TMP, Joe was told today that his teaching and coaching contracts will not be renewed next year. He was not given a reason and is “allowed” to finish the school year, which clearly says he has done nothing unethical. Ask TMP graduates if he prepared them for college. Ask his players if he was fair and demanded their best. Yes, he is passionate. Yes, he is direct. Yes, he has high standards. Yes, he loves his Catholic faith. And, TMP, if you are going to treat him this way, you don’t deserve him. P.S. You will find someone to take his spot, but you won’t replace him.”
