By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-Thomas More Prep-Marian is once again on the lookout for a head high school football coach after current head coach Jason Cauley submitted his resignation to the school. Cauley has spent the past two seasons as the head of the Monarch football program and went 5-13 over that time. TMP did see offensive improvement during Cauley’s tenure as they averaged over 30 points per game under his direction.

He is leaving TMP to take the same position at a Christian school in the Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona area. Cauley will also serve as the school’s head track coach. He will remain at TMP until the end of the current school year.

Hays High 10, Life Prep 0

WICHITA, Kan.-After finishing 11-7 and replacing eight seniors from a year ago the Hays High Lady Indians showed very little rust on Thursday night with a 10-0 win over Life Prep Academy in Wichita. Hays High started the scoring early when Maggie Robben found the back of the net to give the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead. It wouldn’t be until the 16th minute when Cori Isbell struck to make it 2-0. The Lady Indians would tack on three more goals before half (Allison Shubert, Sophie Humphrey, Judith Isbell) and had a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Hannah McGuire would start the scoring early in the second half for Hays High who kept the pressure on the whole game. She would be followed by Savannah Schneider, Isabel Robben, Maia Lummus and the second goal from Shubert. The game was called early because of the 10 goal mercy rule.

Hays High is now 1-0 on the season and will compete next in the McPherson Invitational March 26-29. They will open the tournament with Topeka High at 2pm on the 26th.

Royal Valley 54, TMP 52 OT

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-Offense was at a premium on Friday afternoon in the girl’s 3A State Tournament Semifinal in Hutchinson. TMP and Royal Valley struggled to make shots in the first half. The Lady Monarchs led 10-7 after the first quarter of play. Royal Valley scored the first seven points on the second quarter and led 14-10 late before a four point run by TMP tied the game at 14 points apiece at halftime.

The second half continued with both teams going back and forth at each other with intense defensive pressure. TMP took a three point lead heading into the fourth quarter after an Aubrey Koenigsman three pointer. She was fouled on the shot but was not able to complete the four point play.

TMP would hold a slight advantage most of the fourth quarter. The Lady Monarchs led by five points with under a minute to play as Royal Valley drilled a late three pointer to send the game to overtime. The Lady Panthers banked in a guarded three to take a three point advantage early in the overtime and TMP was not able to overcome the deficit in the 54-52 overtime loss.

Royal Valley improves to 17-7 on the season and will play for the state title tomorrow. TMP drops to 22-3 and will play the consolation final at noon on Saturday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan-TMP trailed early but not often in the their 55-40 win over Wellsville in the opening round of the 3A State Basketball tournament in Hutchinson Thursday night. The Lady Monarchs were able to grab a 17-13 lead after the first quarter of play. TMP was able to continue their late first quarter success in to the second quarter.

The Lady Monarchs saw their lead cut to two midway through the quarter but that’s when the number two ranked team in the state kicked it into gear. They would finish the half on an 8-0 run thanks to some domination on the boards from Savannah Yost and Kayla Vitztum and some timely shots from Adell Riedel and Bailey Lacy. TMP would have a double digit lead, 28-18, at the break.

The third quarter was a slow start for TMP as it took them just over three and a half minutes to score. But it didn’t seem to matter as Wellsville couldn’t find the bucket either. The Lady Eagles cut the TMP lead to 28-20 and again the Lady Monarchs responded with a 9-2 run to end the quarter and they took a commanding 38-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

TMP expanded that lead to 20 points in the final quarter before settling for the 15 point win. Wellsvile was led by Sydney Dwyer wit 20 points and Demi Aamold with 11. The Lady Eagles finish their season at 18-5. TMP had nine players score led by 17 from Vitztum and 10 each from Jillian Lowe and Aubrey Koenigsman. Girls: TMP 38, Russell 36

MINNEAPOLIS, Kan.-Defense was the name of the game in the first half of Friday night’s 3A Sub-State Championship game in Minneapolis between TMP and Russell. The Lady Monarchs led 14-10 after the first quarter and trailed only once at 6-5. In the second quarter the two teams played even in the second quarter scoring 8 points each. TMP led 22-18 at the halftime break.

The Lady Monarchs would build their lead as high as seven points in the third quarter but that would be as high as it would get. Russell would score the next nine points capped off by a Tiffany Dortland three pointer to take only their second lead of the game, and their last. TMP answered by scoring the next six points of the third quarter to lead 31-27 after Emily Schippers used her shooter’s touch on a last second three pointer to end the quarter.

TMP would make it an 8-0 run with the first two points of the fourth quarter to go up six points and that’s when things got interesting. Russell scored the next five points to get to within one point at 33-32. A Savannah Yost bucket would give TMP a three point advantage with just over two minutes to play. TMP led 38-36 with just over two seconds remaining and would steal a Russell pass and pick up the win.

Jaclyn Schulte led Russell with 15 points. Sam Leiker added 12 for the Lady Broncos who finish their season at 19-4. Yost led TMP with 9 points on the night. The Lady Monarchs improve to 20-2 on the season and will go to their third consecutive 3A State Tournament next week in Hutchinson.
