Chin sets school record, Monarchs golf finishes fifth

GOODLAND, Kan. – Shannen Chin set a new 18-hole record at TMP-Marian, firing a 3-over par 74 to win the Goodland Invitational Tuesday at the Sugar Hills Golf Club. Chin breaks the old mark of 78 held by Karee Dinkel. Chin was 6-over on the front nine then blistered the back nine with birdies at 12, 14 and 16 while making pars at the rest of the way for a 33.

Rylie Cook of Johnson-Stanton County finished second with a 77. Kerrigan Rudolph of Goodland took third with an 80.

The Monarchs finished fifth in the team standings.

HHS boys soccer advances to finals; TMP-Marian loses

The Hays High boys soccer team advances to the finals of the Titan Classic in Wichita Tuesday, beating Wichita Southeast 3-2 in overtime. The Indians will face Wichita South in the finals Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. The host Titans edged Wichita Trinity 2-1.

TMP-Marian gives up a goal in the 79th minute and loses to Salina South 2-1 at the Maize South Invitational.

WICHITA, Kan.-Hays High outscored Wichita Home School 5-1 in the second half of their 8-5 opening round victory of the 2017 Titan Classic in Wichita. The Indians worked their way out of some first half trouble which saw them with a couple of three two goal deficits at 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2.  The Indians had three first half goals from Ethan Nunnery and trailed 4-3 at the break.

Both teams battled through mid to upper 90 degree heat which took out one of the game officials early in the second half. Hays High tied the game in the 48th minute on a penalty kick by Zach Wagner.  WHS answered with a goal in the 58th minute to take their final lead of the game, 5-4. Hays High would answer with the next four goals. Nunnery scored two more along with one each from Trae McCrae and Conner Teget. The Indians had a healthy dose of assists on the day as well. Wagner had four, Jacob Maska two, and Brian Cisneros and Peyton Thorell had one each.

With Nunnery’s five goals he is now the all time goal scoring leader in HHS history with 52 career goals. Eclipsing the mark of 47 set by his current head coach, Silas Hibbs. Wagner continues to add to his total as the all-time career assist leader for the Indians.

The Indians improve to 2-1 on the season and advance to Tuesday’s semifinals at 6pm where they will face Wichita Southeast who beat Hutchinson 3-1.

TMP comes up short in opener

ABILENE, Kan.-Abilene built a 20-0 lead over TMP early in the second quarter of Friday night’s high school football opener at Cowboy Stadium. TMP would score 14 unanswered points to end the first half to make it a game. The Monarchs had a chance to cut the lead but missed a field goal late in the first half and trailed by six at halftime. TMP quarterback David McFarland finished the first half with 320 yards passing and a couple of touchdowns with Tate Garcia on the receiving end of both.

The Monarchs came out strong to open the third quarter as they drove inside the Abilene 10 yard line but the drive stalled on downs.  Abilene would take advantage as they scored on a 92 yard touchdown pass to take a two score advantage, 26-14.  The Cowboys weren’t done with their third quarter scoring as Trey Hoerner crossed the goal line for his second score to give his team a 32-14 lead.

That 18 point lead held up until McFarland found Creighton Renz for a 70 yard score with 8:59 to play in the game. TMP would answer again with 4:55 to play when McFarland scrambled to his right and got the ball to Karl Rack who found himself wide open at the goal line. TMP would get the ball back late in the game and drove to the Cowboy’s five yard line and after a penalty McFarland was sacked on the final play to secure the win for Abilene.

McFarland finished the night with 650 yards and four touchdowns. TMP drops to 0-1 on the season and will travel to Ellis next Friday night to take on the Railroaders.

Hays drops opener with Scott City

HAYS, Kan. – Hays High opened up the season with Scott City on Friday night with a 29-8 loss. Scott City engineered a 16 play drive that extended into the the first play of the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead on a 26 yard field goal. It was a lead they would never give up. Scott City scored on their next possession but missed the extra point for a 9-0 lead.

Hunter Brown intercepted a pass at the three yard line right before halftime, but Scott City answered with an interception of their own that the Beavers returned to end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was good to give Scott City a 16-0 lead.

Highlights

Hays forced a fumble and recovered it on the first play of the second half. Two plays later Will Sennett completed a wide receiver pass to Mason Ibarra for a touchdown. Hunter Brown completed a pass to Palmer Hutchison for a two point conversion and a 16-8 score. Hays took over at the Scott City 45 yard line following a Beaver punt after just three plays. Hays went for eight yards on the first play of the drive but was called for holding and the drive stalled.

Scott City scored the final 13 points of the game and completed the 29-8 win. Hays falls to 0-1. Scott City moves to 1-0. Hays was held to just 97 yards of offense. Scott City put together 271 yards. Each team finished with two turnovers.

Hays plays host to Great Bend next Friday.

HHS cross country teams take part in Great Bend meet

The Hays High girls cross country finished third and the boys fifth at Great Bend Thursday.

Yesenia Maldonado was the top finisher for the Lady Indians finishing 9th win a time of 22:46. Tana Herreman was 17th and Madison Schmidt 21st.

Dawon VonFeldt was the loan medalist for the Indians finishing 14th win a time of 18:22. Johnny Fuller was 22nd.

The Indians cross country teams will travel to Hesston on Thursday.

Hays High tennis wins their own invitational

The Hays High tennis team earned a first place finish at their invitational Thursday at Hays High.

Victoria’s Hannah Radke took home the No. 1 singles title defeating Hays High’s Sarah Wyse 8-3.

The Hays High No. 1 doubles team of Gabby Taliaferro and Macey Steckel beat Victoria’s Morgan Leiker and Megan Karst to earn first place.

Kaleigh Asbaugh placed first for the Indians at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Brianna Forinash and Lynsie Hansen also finished first.

Victoria finished second as a team, placing second in the No. 2 singles and doubles and the No. 2 singles.

Hays High tennis takes on Great Bend on Tuesday.

HHS soccer blanks Wichita Classical School

Hays High’s Zach Wagner recorded a first-half hat trick as the Indians picked up a 5-0 win over Wichita Classical School Thursday in Wichita.

Wagner scored his first goal in the eighth minute. His second goal came in the 35th minute on an assist by Trea McCrea. Wagner’s final goal of the first half came on an assist by Ethan Nunnery in the 38th minute.

Ethan Nunnery added two more in the second half with Wagner assisting on both goals as Hays moves to 1-1 on the season.

Hays High will begin play at the Wichita Invitational on Monday.

TMP volleyball goes 2-1 at Abilene

The TMP-Marian volleyball team finished 2-1 Thursday at the Abilene quadrangular to move to 4-1 on the season.

The second ranked Monarchs opened with a win over Concordia in three sets. Concordia took the first set 21-25 but TMP bounced back taking the final two sets 25-13 and 25-16.

TMP then swept Smokey Valley in two, winning 25-15 and 25-5.

The Monarchs opened their final match of the day with a 25-23 win over the host Abilene but the Cowgirls won the final two sets, 25-27 and 19-25.

TMP will travel to Phillipsburg on Tuesday.

HHS volleyball goes 2-1 in Chapman

CHAPMAN, Kan.-The Hays High Lady Indian volleyball team took two out of three matches in their first action of the 2017 season. Hays High traveled to Chapman for a quadrangular with the hosts, Alma-Wabaunsee and Riley County.

The first match with Riley County went the distance with Hays High winning in three sets. The Lady Indians recovered from losing a tight first set (25-27) by picking up wins in the second set (25-22) and the decisive third set (25-23). Tasiah Nunnery led the team with 15 kills, Kallie Leiker 24 digs, Jaycee Dale 4 solo blocks and Hannah McGuire with 15 assists.

Wabaunsee was no match for Hays High in the second match of the evening as the Lady Indians dominated the Chargers in straight sets.  They never trailed in the match and led by as many as 12 points on a couple of occasions in a 25-13 set one victory and cruised to a 25-15 win in set number two. Nunnery paced the team with nine kills, Leiker 13 digs and McGuire 9 assists.

The only loss of the night came in a three sets to Chapman. Hays High wasn’t really challenged in the first set winning 25-19 and looked well on their way to victory with a 13-5 lead in the second set. That’s when Chapman answered with a 20-8 run to close out the second set win.  The Lady Irish prevailed 25-20 in set three to pick up the victory.

Hays High starts the season 2-1 and will play a quadrangular in Dodge City on September 7th.

 

TMP-Marian volleyball sweeps Stockton, Trego in season opener

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian volleyball team opened their season with a pair of wins Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse. The . The Monarchs, who are ranked second in Class 31 in the Kansas Volleyball Association Preseason Poll, swept Stockton, who’s ranked seventh in 2A, 25-7, 25-18. TMP then swept Trego 25-21, 25-11.

Trego beat Stockton 25-20, 25-11 in the other match.

The Monarchs are back in action Thursday at a quadrangular in Abilene.

Dinkel leads HHS girls’ golf to title at own invite

HAYS, Kan. – Karee Dinkel birdied the first playoff hole to beat Salina Central’s Ellie Cobb for the individual title and lead the Hays High girls golf team to the team champipnship at their own invitational Monday afternoon at the Smoky Hill County Club.

Dinkel, who transferred to Hays High from TMP-Marian, shot a 39 in the nine-hole event.

The Monarchs Shannen Chin shot a 47 and tied for fourth.

TMP-Marian’s Katy Walters and Hays High’s Emily McGuire all shot 54’s and tied for sixth.
