OAKLEY, Kan. – For the second straight year, the Trego boys golf team has won a regional title. The Golden Eagles shot a 345 and finished 10 strokes ahead of second place Plainville at the Oakley 2A Regional at the Oakley Country Club.
Teammates Dalton Mai and Emmit Owens were the top two individuals. Mai shot a 4-over-par 75, one stroke ahead of Owens.
Plainville placed four in the top-1o. Tanner Copeland was fourth with an 81, Chandler Cellmer came in sixth with an 87 while Jared Copeland and Dawson Workman both tied for 10th after rounds of 94.
Both teams advance to the 2A State Tournament which will be held next Monday (May 22) at the Golf Club at Southwind in Garden City.
TOPEKA, Kan. – The TMP-Marian Monarchs are the No. 4 seed and will host Wichita Independent in the opening round of the 4-3-2-1A Central/South Central Regional Tuesday at 5 pm. Hays High is the No. 7 seed and will host Augusta at 4 pm Tuesday.
HAYS, Kan. – Valley Center raced out to a big early led then held off Hays High 9-7 in game one of their doubleheader. They then scored six in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and won the nightcap 12-9 in nine innings to finish off the doubleheader sweep Friday at the Hays High Field. The Indians go 0-6 in their three doubleheaders this week to end the regular season 8-12.
Due to the new pitch count limitations in high school baseball, the Indians were reduced to using junior varsity pitchers. Easton Wamser got the start in the first game and allowed eight runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts and took the loss in the first contest. Trey VanPelt had three hits including a double and drove in two. Tyrone Winn had two hits and knocked in two. Cody Petersen walked twice and scored three runs.
Hays grabbed a 8-0 lead after three innings in the second game but couldn’t hold on. Dago Cano gave up two runs on two hits in relief and takes the loss. Palmer Hutchison gave up seven runs on two hits in an inning of relief. Willie Sennet made the start and pitched four scoreless innings on two hits. Jace Armstrong and Dawson Harmon both had two hits with Armstrong driving in three and Harmon two. Grant Coffman also had two RBIs.
The Indians open postseason play in Buhler Tuesday against McPherson.
ANDOVER, Kan. – Andover Central scored two runs in the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie then added five in the sixth to beat the Hays High softball team 9-2 in game one of their doubleheader Friday. The Jaguars scored six in the second inning and nine in the third and won the second game 16-0.
The Indians outhit the Jaguars 5-4 in the first game but committed four errors which resulted in five unearned runs. Jaysa Wichers walked six and struck out four and suffered the loss. She drove in both Indian runs with a first inning double.
Macee Altman allowed seven run on six hits in 1 2/3 innings and takes the loss. Wichers gave up all nine runs in the third but only one was earned. Shyann Schumacher collected the only hit for Hays in game two.
Hays closes the regular season 7-11. They begin regional play Monday.
HAYS, Kan. – Trego placed two in the top three and won the Mid-Continent League Golf Tournament Thursday at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course. Emmit Owens brought home the team title with a 5-over-par 76. Teammate Dalton Mai finished third with an 82.
TMP-Marian placed two in the top-10 and finished fourth. Cameron Rozean shot an 86 and tied for fifth while Jace Rueschoff tied for ninth with an 88.
Liberal baseball swept Hays on Thursday in a make up double header that allowed the Redskins to claim a share of the Western Athletic Conference title. Each Hays and Liberal needed a sweep of one another to tie Dodge City and Garden City at 5-3 in final conference standings.
Trey Riggs allowed just two runs in game one but the offense managed just single run in support in the Indian’s third consecutive one run loss. The sophomore over came three errors through the game but Liberal managed to get three hits in the fourth inning for the decisive margin.
Riggs went six and two-thirds innings throwing 105 pitches, the maximum allowed by KSHSAA. Tyrone Wynn finished off the only batter he faced in the seventh inning. Riggs struck out a career high nine, passing his previous high of seven that he established Saturday versus Goddard-Eisenhower in the Diamond Classic.
Hays batters walked six times and were hits twice. The Indians were 0-12 with runners in scoring position.
Hays managed just four hits in the loss and scored the only run when Wynn doubled to score Cody Petersen.

Both team’s offense came around in the second game with Liberal scoring runs each of the odd numbered innings, including five in the seventh for a 11-7 win to clinch their share of the conference crown. Each team scored a single run in the first with Hays tying the game on a triple by Wynn. He scored on a wild pitch in the next plate appearance. Liberal scored two more in the third and three in the fifth to expand their lead to 6-1. Hays answered with two in the bottom of the fifth and had the bases loaded but could not score any more.
Liberal needed all of their five seventh inning runs as Hays strung together four runs in the final inning, all on two outs but left the bases loaded for fourth time in the game. Hays stranded fourteen runners in the second game loss. They left ten on the base paths in the first game. Hays used two pitchers in the game with Cole Murphy taking the loss and exiting the game with a stiff back after the third. The Indians walked seven batters and hit four. Liberal walked nine and hit three.
Wynn led the way in game two with four hits. Peterson added two hits. Both players also scored two runs. Peterson and Palmer Hutchison each drove in two runs. The Indians finished game two 5-16 with runners in scoring position out of 22 play appearances.
Hays falls to 8-10 overall and finishes 3-5 in the WAC. Liberal is now 13-5 and 5-3. Hays returns to action on Friday for senior day, taking on Valley Center. It will be the Indians third double header in four days and will finish off ten games over nine days.
HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian baseball team scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and beat Colby 10-6 to finish off a doubleheader sweep of the Eagles Thursday at Larks Park. The Monarchs used a five run first inning to grab the early lead in a 6-4 win in game one.
Tate Garcia and Creighton Renz both had three of the Monarchs 15 hits in game two. Renz, Adam Gottschalk and Gavin Schumacher all drove in three. Carlos Schwindt picked up the win despite allowing four runs on no hits and three walks.
Cole Zimmerman allowed two runs on one hits over four innings for the win in the first game.
The Monarchs are now 11-7 heading into their regional opener at home on Monday.
DODGE CITY, Kan. – Shane Berens won the shot put and the discus to lead the Hays High boys track team at the Western Athletic Conference meet Thursday at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City. Berens had a toss of 54′ 9″ in the shot put and 160′ 10″ in the discus. Connor Winter finished third in the same two events.
Mattie Hutchison brought home the only gold medal for the girls, winning the javelin with a toss of 108′ 3″. Jaycee Dale finished second in the high jump at 5′ 2″ and was third in the triple jump (33′ 4″). Tasiah Nunnery finished second in the long jump (17′ 2 1/4″.
The Liberal boys and Garden City girls won the team titles.
HAYS, Kan. – TMP-Marian closed out their regular season with a 3-1 win Thursday over Wichita North. The Monarchs are 10-4-1 and await word on who and when they play in the 4-1A Regional next week.
HAYS, Kan.-The Hays High Lady Indians scored two quick goals and dominated Garden City on Thursday afternoon in Hays. Tressa Becker got things started with the first goal in the 14th minute. Two minutes later Savannah Schneider broke free over the middle and maneuvered past the Lady Buffalo goalie and put the ball in the back of the net for the second and final goal of the 2-0 match.
The Lady Indians controlled the ball the rest of the match, not allowing Garden to make much of a push. It was a big win for Hays High who had their full team together for the first time in a couple of weeks. With the win the Lady Indians finish the regular season at 10-6. They will host the first round of 4-3-2-1A Regional play on Tuesday. Their opponent is not yet determined.
TMP-Marian is the No. 1 seed in the Russell 3A regional and receives a first round bye. The Monarchs will face either Lakin or Ellsworth at 3 pm Tuesday, 5/16. Plainville-Stockton is the No. 2 seed and plays the host Broncos at 6 pm Monday, 5/15.
Ellis is the No. 2 seed in the Brookville-Ell Saline 2-1A regional. The Railers receive a first round bye and will play either Brookville-Ell Saline or Bennington at 4pm Wednesday, 5/17.
Ellis is the No. 1 seed in the Spearville 2-1A Regional. The Railers receive a first round bye and will play either Ellinwood or Minneaola at 6 pm on Monday, 5/15.
LIBERAL, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team set a new school record and won the Liberal Invitational by one stroke over Garden City Tuesday at the Willow Tree Golf Course. The Indians shot a 291 which was six shots better than the old mark of 297 which was set in 1978 then matched in 2011.
Hays placed four in the top-10 led by Allen Zollinger and Tradgon McCrea who both fired a 1-under-par 71. Zollinger finished third and McCrea fourth. Peyton Kieffer was ninth with a 74 and Josh Norris 10th after a 75.
The Indians finish second in the final Western Athletic Conference standings. Zollinger and McCrea were both named First Team All-WAC with Josh Norris honorable mention.
