TMP splits in Great Bend

GREAT BEND, Kan.-TMP held a 2-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning in game one in Great Bend.  The Lady Panthers’ Emma Cape stepped to the plate with two on and two outs and drove a pitch over the fence in left center field.  TMP was not able put a run across in the top of the 7th and fell 3-2 in game one.

Game 2 saw Great Bend take a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Baylee Beck solo home run.  The Lady Panthers took a 2-1 lead to the top of the fourth inning and almost made it through without damage.  TMP opened the inning with two ground outs and that’s when they made a charge.  Bridget Heimann go on base with a bloop single to left and scored on an RBI double from Alison Helget.  TMP would take the lead for good when Meagan Brin singled home Helget.

Helget took the loss in the circle in game one while Bailey Lacy picked up the win in game two.  TMP is now 14-6 and will start 3A Regional play next week in Russell.

HHS baseball swept at Andover Central

ANDOVER, Kan. – Andover Central scored the game-winning run on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Hays High 3-2 in game one of their doubleheader. The Jaguars then scored three in the third and hold off the Indians 4-3 in game two for the doubleheader sweep Tuesday in Andover.

Trey Riggs had two hits including a double and drove in a run in the first contest. Grant Coffman allowed all three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks and takes the loss.

The Indians rallied with two in the sixth and had the tying run on base with one out but a couple of flyouts ended the second game.

Trey Riggs, Palmer Hutchison and Grant Coffman all had three hits with Coffman driving in two. Nick Fisher allowed three runs on four hits in an inning of relief and takes the loss as the Indians fall to 8-8.

Hays hosts Liberal Thursday at 2 pm then closes out the regular season at home against Valley Center on Friday.

Big inning leads HHS softball to sweep of Liberal

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays High softball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh as they rally to beat Liberal 12-11 to finish off a doubleheader sweep Tuesday at Glassman Park.

The Indians, who won the opener 15-5 in five innings, took advantage of two errors, a walk and had four singles in the big inning. Cameron Jensen drove in Macee Altman with a two-out single to cap the comeback. Cassidy Prough drove in four and Mackenzie Fagan had three RBI. Altman struck out seven and walked eight and gets the win.

The Indians (7-9) scored four in the second, five in the third and five in the fifth to blow open the first game. Jaysa Wichers had two singles and a walk and drove in five. She also got the win allowing one earned run on three this with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Kleweno, Berens named HHS outstanding athletes

HAYS, Kan. – Hays High School held their annual athletic awards ceremony Monday night at the Hays High gym. The Jack Roberts Outstanding Female Athlete Award was given to Talyn Kleweno and the Swim, Carpenter, Smith Memorial Award for the most outstanding male athlete went to Shane Berens. The Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year Award went to Rick and Diane Wolf in the adult category. Preston Browning was the student recipient and John Thissen for USD 489.

The Jack Roberts Female Athlete Award is named in honor of Jack Roberts who was principal at Hays High. Mr. Roberts was a strong advocate of athletics for young women and dis very much to advance and promote this cause.

The Swim, Carpenter, Smith Award is named in honor of three Hays High students that were killed in a car accident during their sophomore year.

The Fan of the Year Awards is named in honor of former HHS student Debbie Brungardt who lived her life with a physical disability but attended nearly every event that involved the Hays High Indians. Selected by the HHS coaches, the Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year is presented to an adult community fan, a student fan and a USD 489 Faculty/Staff member.

TMP-Marian soccer blanks Life Prep

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team had no problem with Life Prep Academy Monday, beating them 10-0. The Monarchs are now 9-4-1 on the season.

TMP-Marian closes out the regular season Thursday at home against Wichita North.

TMP-Marian’s Rozean finishes second in Phillipsburg

PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. – TMP-Marian’s Cameron Rozean shot a 3-over-par 71 and finished second at the Mel Schremmer Invitational Molnday in Phillipsburg. Rozean finished two shots behind the Panthers Jacey Kellerman who won the touarnment with a 69.

Trego’s Emmit Owens finished third with a 72. Teammate Dalton Mai was fifth with a 75.

Phillipsburg won the team title with a 300, 21 shots ahead of Trego. TMP-Marian finished fifth with a 342.

HHS baseball wins Diamond Classic finale

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays High baseball team scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to rally past Goddard Eisenhower 6-2 Saturday afternoon in the final game of the 2017 Diamond Classic at the Hays High Field. The Indians (8-6) went 2-2 in the tournament.

The Indians used a single and three walks including one to Willie Sennet with the bases loaded to tie the game 2-2 in the third. Jace Armstrong followed with a two-run double to give Hays the lead for good.

They added two more runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and an error.

Trey Riggs (3-0) allowed two runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and four walks for the win. Easton Wamser pitched an 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for his first save.

The Indians had three players named to the All-Tournament team in Trey Riggs, Tyrone Winn and Grand Coffman.

HHS boys golfers finish second at Garden City Invite

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team finished runner-up at Friday’s Garden City Invitational at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. The Indians shot a 315, 13 strokes behind the host Buffaloes.

Tradgon McRea led the Indians with a 6-over-par 78 and finished sixth. Peyton Kieffer and Brent Koeningsman were both one shot back and finished eighth and ninth respectively while Allen Zollinger fired an 80 and placed 10th.

HHS baseball falls to Salina Central at Diamond Classic

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays High baseball team fell to 1-2 at the Diamond Classic following an 8-1 loss to Salina Central Friday at the Hays High Field. The Indians led 1-0 until a six-run fifth inning by the Mustangs.

Cody Peterson reached on an error and scored on a Trey Riggs groundout in the first inning. The Indians (7-6) were held without a hit until Palmer Hutchison doubled with one out in the sixth.

Cole Murphy allowed four runs on six hits over four innings with five strikeouts and two walks and takes the loss.

The Indians close out tournament play Saturday afternoon against Goddard-Eisenhower.

HHS splits first two games of Diamond Classic

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays High baseball team split their first two games of the Diamond Classic Thursday. The Indians beat Life Prep Academy 12-0 in the opener then lost 12-8 to Great Bend.

The Indians scored six in the first against Life Prep and took advantage of seven errors. Grant Coffman allowed one hit over four innings for the win against Life Prep. Tyrone Winn, Trey VanPelt and Willie Sennet all drove in two runs.

Great Bend used a six-run fourth to take an 11-5 lead and held the Indians off the rest of the way. Tyrone Winn takes the loss, allowing 10 runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Trey Riggs had two hits and drove in four.

TMP-Marian baseball sweeps Goodland

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian baseball team swept  Goodland 11-1 and 14-7 Thursday to run their winning streak to four. The Monarchs (9-7) scored in every inning in the first game including a five-run first. Cole Zimmerman allowed one hit with a walk and 10 strikeouts in the six inning complete game win. Luke Ruder had two hits including a home runs and drove in three.

The Monarchs scored six in the first and four in the second in the second game. Nick Meis picked up the win, allowing seven runs on nine hits over four innings. Carlos Schwindt pitched three innings of scoreless relief.

HHS golf runner up in Great Bend

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team finishes second at the Great Bend Invitational yesterday at the Stoneridge Country Club. The Indians shoot a 301 and finish seven back of Garden City. Allen Zollinger led the Indians with a 3-over-par 73 and finished fourth. Tradgon McCrae also shot a 73 and finished fifth. Justin McCullick was seventh after a 76 and Josh Norris came in 10th with a 79.

Helget’s no-hitter leads TMP-Marian softball to sweep

HAYS, Kan. – Alison Helget threw a no-hitter to lead the TMP-Marian softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Plainville/Stockton Tuesday at the TMP Sports Complex. Helget and Bailey Lacy combine to strikeout 18 as the Monarchs win 2-0 and 6-1.

Helget struck out nine and walked none in the first contest. The only baserunner came on catcher interference. Helget and Lacy, who had three hits, drove in both Monarchs runs.

Lacy struck out nine without a walk in the second game. Her first inning double scored two to give the Monarchs the early lead. Katelyn Zimmerman also drove in two while Alison Helget and Ciara Seib both had two hits.
