Game 1:  TMP 7, Sacred Heart 0
Game 2:  TMP 11, Sacred Heart 5

HAYS, Kan.-It was pitching and defense that dominated the first four innings of Game 1 of a doubleheader between TMP and Sacred Heart on Tuesday.  After getting a timely double play to end the top of the 5th inning the Monarch bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth.  TMP collected four hits along with a walk and a fielder’s choice and put five runs on the board.  The inning was highlighted by a two RBI triple by Chase Werth to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Monarchs would add two more runs in the 6th inning for some extra insurance.  Tate Garcia pitched the complete game shutout to pick up the victory.  TMP moved to 5-7 with the 7-0 win.

Sacred Heart got on the board in the top of the first inning in Game 2 thanks to a TMP error and a base hit.  TMP tied it in the 2nd inning with a run from Eston Brown.  The Knights would take the lead in the top of the 4th with a pair of runs but TMP would answer with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer from Adam Gottschalk.  Sacred Heart tied it in the top of the 5th but their joy was short lived as the Monarchs put up a five spot in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.

TMP would score two more in the 6th inning and picked up the 11-5 win.  Chase Werth gets the win for the Monarchs who improved to 6-7 on the season.  Goodland will come to town for a doubleheader on Thursday.

Hays baseball splits with Dodge City

Like most teams around the state of Kansas, Hays and Dodge City’s baseball seasons have been changed because of the weather.  Friday night the moisture held off but the cold weather did not.  Hays and Dodge City split their double header as they squeezed in the games before the rain in the weekend’s forecast.

Game 1

Hays 4 – Dodge City 3 (9 innings)

Hays helped Dodge City to a two run lead thanks to errors through the first five innings.  Hays battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning which was led off by Jace Armstrong’s first career home run.  Hays tied the game at two runs a piece when Palmer Hutchinson blooped single into the outfield.

Each team scored a single run in the seventh inning to force extra baseball.  Hays had the winning run on the third base in the each the seventh and eighth inning before breaking through in the ninth.  The Indian’s Cody Peterson reached first on an error then moved to third on a errant pick-off throw from the pitcher.  The Red Demons elected to load the bases with two intentional walks, bringing Trey Riggs to the plate.  Riggs raked a hard single off the third baseman’s glove who was playing in on the infield.

Game 1 Highlights

Palmer Hutchison took the win in the 4-3 opener.  Hutchison pitched two innings of relief after being cleared to play medically the day before.  Tyrone Wynn pitched the first seven innings allowing three runs, one of which was earned.  Dodge City’s starting pitcher went six and a third innings before leaving due to the state mandated 105 maximum pitch count rule.

Game 2

Dodge City 12 – Hays 4

Dodge City jumped out to a 6-0 run on their way to a 12-4 win in game two.  Dodge City sent all nine of their players to the play in the fourth inning scoring three runs.  Hays answered with four runs of their own while sending nine to plate.  The bottom of the fourth inning cut the Indian lead down to 6-4.  Hays though would not have any more players cross the plate.

Game 2 Highlights

The Indians used four pitchers in the game, walking twelve Red Demons and hitting two more.  The Indians allowed ten hits in the loss.  The Indian offense notched just one hit.

Coach Frank Leo

Hays moves to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Dodge City is now 7-4 and 2-3 in the WAC.  Hays is off until the Diamond Classic on May 4th, 5th and 6th.  Goddard-Eisenhower, Salina Central, Life Prep Academy and Great Bend will all take part in the tournament.

Hays High 3, TMP 2

HAYS, Kan.-Hays High Freshman Sophie Humphrey scored two second half goals to help lift the Hays High Lady Indians to a 3-2 victory over TMP on Thursday afternoon in Hays at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.  It was a back and forth battle from the beginning with TMP striking first on a goal from Kayla Vitztum that gave the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.  It would take 30 minutes for the next score when Hays High’s Kallie Leiker scored in the 36th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece.

The score remained that way until Vitztum struck again nine minutes in to the second half to give TMP their last lead of the match.  Two minutes later Humphrey scored her first goal to tie the game at 2-2.  The two teams battled through the rest of the second half when Humphrey found a crack in the Lady Monarch’ defense on the right side and found the back of the net to give Hays High the 3-2 lead and the victory.

TMP drops to 5-3-1 with the loss.  Hays High improves to 8-4 with the win.

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Executive Board of the Kansas State High School Activities Association announced today, that Bill Faflick, of Wichita, Kansas, has been selected as Executive Director-Elect of the KSHSAA effective July 1, 2017. On July 1, 2018, Faflick will become the seventh Executive Director of the KSHSAA succeeding current Executive Director, Gary Musselman of Silver Lake.

Faflick, age 55, was selected in a national search to lead the organization and its 762 member schools effective July 1, 2018. Gary Musselman, the current Executive Director, previously announced his retirement effective on that date.

Faflick joins the KSHSAA after serving the last six years as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools in USD #259 Wichita, Kansas. From 1999 – 2011, Faflick served as USD #259 Director of Athletics and Athletic Director of Wichita Southeast High School from 1995-1999. Faflick taught mathematics and coached track and field and cross country at Southeast High School from 1985-1999.

“What a blessing it has been to serve as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Wichita Public Schools for the past 32 years, building relationships with the great students and staff in our community. I am humbled and honored with this opportunity to serve as the next Executive Director and excited to lead the KSHSAA team as we continue this important work across our great state of Kansas,” Faflick commented. “Following in the footsteps of Mr. Musselman will certainly be a challenge as his legacy of service and pursuit of excellence for Kansas students and member schools has set a high standard of excellence and integrity. Yet I believe my professional experiences have prepared me to provide the leadership needed for our Association to maintain and advance the mission of the KSHSAA moving forward.

It is my goal to provide the vision and energy necessary for the KSHSAA staff to engage, collaborate, and lead the charge for healthy interscholastic activities programs in Kansas schools. With a foundation of leadership and personal investment, I stand committed to lead with integrity and the passion necessary for the ultimate goal of student success. I look forward to working with the talented staff of the Association and member schools as we serve together with courage, confidence, and compassion.”
