Hays High softball drops two in WAC play

Missed opportunities was the theme of the night for a young and inexperienced Hays High softball team on Thursday.  After having games washed out on three separate dates, the Indians took the field for the first time since March 16th.  Dodge City ran their winning streak to five games as they swept Hays 14-3 and 9-8.

Dodge City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one and expanded that lead to 8-0 after the second inning.  Hays had two runners aboard in the bottom of both innings but did not score.  Hays opened the bottom of the first with two runners aboard and nobody out, but Dodge City got a double play on a soft pop up to the short stop.  The Indians got runners to second and third in the second inning, but again could not push across a run.

Dodge City scored in each of the first four innings, adding a single run in the third and a second five run inning in the fourth.  Down 14-0 heading the bottom of the fourth inning, Hays scored their first run of the game on a RBI double by Brooke Denning.  Hays added two more in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball and then an RBI single by Macee Altman.  The three runs were not enough though to hold off the game to be ended by run rule after five innings at 14-3.

Coach Erin Wagner

Game two proved to be much better for Hays, but missed opportunities cost the Indians.  Hays scored two runs in the first inning only to see Dodge City put up four in the second.  All four runs came with two outs.  Hays answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at four.  Dodge City again answered.  In the top of the fourth, the Red Demons took the lead on a sacrifice fly to center field and followed that with a two run home run, taking a 7-4 run.

It was the Indian’s turn to answer.  Jaysa Wichers’ double in the bottom of the fourth scored MacKenzie Fagan.  Hays regained the lead an inning later on a Cassidy Prough single, Macee Altman double and a Wichers’ single to go up 8-7.  Dodge City took advantage of a passed ball to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning and on the same at bat scored the decisive run on a single to right field.  Hays put the tying run onto third base in each the sixth and seventh inning, but came up short.  The game ended as Wichers sent a deep drive to left center field where a running catch was made for the final out.

Highlights

Dodge City scored seven of their nine runs with two outs.  Hays stranded 12 runners and had the bases loaded in each the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Hays falls to 2-2 on the season and opens WAC play at 0-2.  Dodge City is now 5-1 and 2-0.  Hays is in Goddard for a triangular on Wednesday and hosts Great Bend next Thursday.

TMP Softball swept by Garden City

Abby Dart is regarded as one of the best pitchers in the state of Kansas.  Thursday versus TMP she showed why.  Dart allowed just one hit and walked four batter in a 6-0 shut-out win of the TMP Monarchs.  Those numbers though were not the most eye popping.  Of the 21 outs in the seven inning game, 20 of them came from strike outs.

Bailey Lacy was the only player to record a hit in game one when she opened the second inning with a double.  Lacy was also the only out that was not via a strikeout when she popped out in the fourth.  Alison Helgit held Garden City to just six runs on five hits.  Just two of those runs though were earned as the committed four errors in the loss.

In game two, Garden City put up seven runs in the first five innings before TMP scored.  The Monarchs notched two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for the final 7-3 score.  TMP had the bases loaded in the sixth inning with nobody out, but managed just the one run.  Allison Helget, Emily Schulte, and Anna Gottchalk each scored a run in the loss.  TMP was held to just three hits in the second game.

The Monarchs fall to 1-3 on the season.  They will play Colby on Monday.

Coffman throws perfect game; Hays sweeps Russell

In just the second game of the 2017 season, Grant Coffman put on a pitching performance that will go down in Hays High history.  Coffman faced 21 Russell Broncos and retired all 21.  That is perfection.  He used just 61 pitches to create the seven inning masterpiece.  Five Broncos were retired by strikeout, eleven from ground outs and five via fly outs or lineout.  Only seven at-bats went past three pitches.

The effort was backed by six runs from the Indian’s offense in the 6-0 victory.  After being held scoreless in the first three innings, Hays scratched across a run in the fourth inning.  What proved to be the go-ahead and winning run also came from Coffman.  Singling with one out, the game’s starting pitcher stole second base, moved to third on a ground out, then scored on a wild pitch.  The Indians would not score again until the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored five additional runs.

Coffman’s perfect game followed a Tyrone Wynn and Cole Murphy combined shutout victory in game one against the Broncos.  Wynn picked up the victory throwing five innings allowing four hits and just one walk while striking out seven.  Cole Murphy pitched the sixth in the 10-0 run rule victory.

Hays led just 1-0 through the first four innings when the Indians struck for seven runs.  During the fifth inning, 12 batters went to the plate collecting six hits and three walks.  The Indians added two more runs in the sixth to end the game.

Hays opens the season at 2-0 and returns to action on Tuesday as they open Western Athletic Conference play against Dodge City at Hays High School.

McPHERSON, Kan.-For the second straight night the Hays High Lady Indians’ Soccer Team found themselves playing extra soccer at the 11th Annual McPherson Invitational Tournament. This time they finished the match before it headed to penalty kicks.  With 2:25 remaining in the second overtime Lanie Schmidt was in the right place at the right time as a Sydney Sulzman cross from the right side deflected off the goalie and Schmidt punched it in for the game winner.

It was a rough match for both teams as yellow cards were handed out like candy including to some unlikely candidates for Hays High.  Just over 11 minutes into the second half the head referee warned both teams which made the tension pretty thick in McPherson.  The Lady Indians would play strong down the stretch to pick up their second straight win.

Hays High takes 5th Place with the victory and improves to 3-1 on the season.  They will travel to Dodge City on Tuesday to open up Western Athletic Conference play against the Red Demons.

Hays High’s Armstrong signs with Cloud

Two days before the first baseball game of the spring, Jace Armstrong placed his name on a national letter of intent to play at Cloud County Community College. Armstrong says he had offer to play college baseball at a few different places. It was the Cloud County coaches that caught his ear though. He not only liked what he heard about becoming a better player on the field, but also the way the coaches want to develop a better person off the field as well. Armstrong says he also glad to have this decision made before games begin this spring, taking the pressure off to perform not only for the team but any scouts in attendance as well.

Jace Armstrong

It also helps that Armstrong can play any number of positions on the diamond. He said the Cloud County coaches will get him on campus before finalizing a position for him. Indian’s head coach Frank Leo says that Armstrong will have plenty of positions to play this spring too. Leo says Armstrong will play shortstop, second base, outfield and time pitching. Leo compliments Armstrong’s athleticism and ability to play multiple positions as two top reasons for his opportunity to play college baseball.

Frank Leo

Armstrong is among a senior group that looks to lead an inexperienced team into the 2017 spring season.
