Hays opens Orange & Black tournament with loss

Dustin Armbruster

Hays entered the 32nd annual Paul Wintz/Tom Bowen Orange & Black Classic as one of only three Kansas teams in the field. Hays, Scott City and host Colby were joined by Far Northeast (Denver), Lotus School for Excellence (Aurora), Falcon (Falcon), Fountain-Fort Carson (Fountain) and Pine Creek (Colorado Springs) all out of Colorado for the three day tourney.

Hays drew Falcon, Colorado in the first round of the tournament in a game played at Colby High School Thursday afternoon. The Indians entered the game on a two game winning streak, the Falcons of Falcon High School last the previous five they had played before the tournament.

Falcon led the entire first half using a 9-2 lead to open the game. Hays cut the lead down to 13-12 with a minute to go in the first quarter. That is when Falcon went on a 12-2 run into the second quarter, building their lead to double digits for the first time. The Falcons pushed their lead up to 13 on two different occasions before Hays cut the lead down to nine at half time 35-26.

Highlights

Hays fell behind by 13 again early in the third quarter before mounting their second half comeback. Hays went on a 14-0 run to take the first lead of the game with 5:45 left in the fourth quarter. Hays twice took a four point lead, the latest coming with just over a minute remaining. The Indians turned over the basketball with under a minute remaining. Falcon scored the games next four points but couldn’t take the lead at the free throw line with :24 left. Both teams has chances to win in the final seconds but the Falcons missed jumper and the Indians missed the front end of a one and one with two second remaining pushing the game to over time tied at 53.

Hays scored the first two points of overtime to take their only lead at 55-53 in overtime before the Falcons scored the next six points. Hays got within one at 61-60 and had the ball three times with under a minute to play but missed on two shots and turned the ball over once. After two free throws from Falcon, Hays missed two three point attempts in the final 20 seconds and lose 63-60.

Coach Rick Keltner

Claiborne Kyles scored 14 to lead the Indians. Shane Berens and Collyn Kreutzer each scored 10. Falcon was led by a career high 22 from Morisse Daniels, including three three pointers in the final 4:35 of the game and overtime.

Hays falls to 7-2 on the year and plays in the consolation semi-finals at Colby High School at 4:45 Friday afternoon. It is just the third loss in the first round of the Orange & Black Classic for Hays. Falcon breaks a five game losing streak and improves to 4-7.

Hays girls beat Dodge City for first time since 2013

Dustin Armbruster

Mother nature again caused issues with the Hays High basketball schedule. Hays and Dodge City were scheduled to play a girls game on Tuesday night. Due to ice that knocked out power in Dodge City, causing the district to call off school, the game was delayed by a day. The same power issues still existed in Dodge City on Wednesday, but with the game between scheduled to be played in Hays, the Red Demons made the trip despite not having school for a second consecutive day.

Hays didn’t score their first field goal until the 3:10 mark of the first quarter, but the Indian defense held the game to a 3-3 score to that point. When Hays finally did hit a basket, it ignited a 17-0 run that lasted midway through the second quarter and built the Indians a 20-3 lead.

Highlights

The Hays defense held Dodge City scoreless for seven minutes and twenty-three seconds while building their lead to 17. The Red Demons had the best stretch of offense in the first half scoring five straight points after the Indians built their biggest lead of the second quarter at 25-6. Hays led 27-11 going into the half, hitting 11 of 14 free throws.

Hays continued to build their lead in the third quarter thanks to defense. The Indians held Dodge City scoreless over a four minute and thirty-six second span helping build their lead to 40-16. Hays pushed the lead to as high as 25 early in the fourth quarter and cruise to a 55-34 victory.

Coach Kirk Maska

It was the first win for Hays High over Dodge City since 2013 when the Indians beat them three times. Jaycee Dale was the only player in the game to reach double figures scoring 10. In all fifteen Indians saw action in the game with eleven scoring.

Hays improves to 6-3 on the season and takes the record to the Mid-America Classic in McPherson to play Valley Center who has a matching record at 3:00 on January 26th. The Indians also improves their Western Athletic Conference record to 2-2. Dodge City falls to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Hays swimming hosts home meet Tuesday

Dustin Armbruster

Hays High hosted the first of two home meets this season. The Indians will also host the Western Athletic Conference meet on February 9th. Tuesday saw five individuals and two relays finish in the top three.

Tanner Callis was second in the 200 yard freestyle and finished third in the 100 yard butterfly. Isaac Smith won the 200 yard individual relay by over three seconds. Chris Fuentes place third in the 100 yard freestyle. Johnny Fuller collected a third place finish in the 100 yard breast stroke.

The 200 yard and 400 yard freestyle relays for Hays finished second in each race. Both relays are comprised of Fuentes, Callis, Brett Bowels and Smith.

Hays will next travel to the meet hosted by Salina South on February 1st.

TMP boys/girls open MCL Tourney with wins

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls: TMP 57, Smith Center 25
Boys: TMP 59, Hill City 53

HAYS, Kan-The TMP Lady Monarchs matched up with Smith Center for a second consecutive game on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Mid Continent League Tournament.  TMP took control of the game early with a 17-2 first quarter with all 17 of those coming from Madyson Koerner who wouldn’t score the rest of the game.  The second quarter wasn’t much better for the Lady Red as TMP outscored them 18-8 to take a 35-10 lead at halftime.

TMP pushed their lead to 55-17 after three quarters and cruised to the 57-25 win with a running clock in the fourth quarter. TMP improves to 10-1 on the season and face Hill City in the semi-finals on Friday in WaKeeney. The Ringnecks were 43-33 winners over Norton.

HILL CITY, Kan-It was quite a battle in Hill City on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the MCL Tournament.  TMP started the game on a 4-0 run and the Ringnecks answered with a quick 9-0 run to take the lead.  TMP would answer and take a 14-13 lead after the first quarter.

The Monarchs would extend their lead to as many as five points in the second quarter when Hill City answered again and close the gap to a single pint a couple of times.  TMP would use some timely shooting from Ryan Karlin who scored 8 first half points.  That helped the Monarchs to a 27-23 lead at the break.

TMP would extend their lead to eight points in the third quarter and settled for a 44-37 lead after three quarters. Hill City would cut the TMP lead to one twice in the fourth quarter but TMP would score the final five points of the contest from the free throw line and picked up the 59-53 victory.  The win is the third in a row for a Monarch team that improves to 7-4 on the season and will play in the championship semi-finals on Friday in WaKeeney.

Hays sweeps Garden City for a second time

Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians continued their way through the Western Athletic Conference on Friday night hosting Garden City. The two teams played to open the season at the Hays City Shootout with the Indians winning both games.

Girls
Hays 50 – Garden City 35

Hays never trailed in the first half, using runs of 14-3 and 12-3 to build their lead as high as 14 points before half time. Garden City scored seven straight to end the first quarter to make the score 19-14, but that was as close as the Buffaloes would get for the rest of the half. The Indians held Garden City without a point until the 2:50 mark of the second quarter. Hays went to the locker room with a 33-22 lead at halftime.

Highlights

Garden City cut the Hays lead down to eight at 37-29 before Hays responded with a 9-2 run to push their lead up to 15 at the end of the third quarter 46-31. Each team scored four points in the fourth quarter with Hays High playing keep away for much of the eight minutes to walk away with a 50-35 victory. It was a similar score the first time the two teams met up with Hays winning 52-34.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays was led by Savannah Schneider who scored 22 and was the only Indian in double figures. Hays improves to 5-3 and snaps a two game skid. The Indians are 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. Garden City falls to 3-7 and 0-3. The Buffaloes were led by the 12 points of Kyra Bellows.

Hays will be at home on Tuesday to play Dodge City. The games will feature only the girls teams as the Hays boys head to the Orange and Black Classic in Colby later in the week.

Boys
Hays 58 – Garden City 49

Hays raced out to a 11-2 lead over the first five minutes of the game before going cold and not scoring for the remainder of the first quarter. Garden City scored the final five points to tighten the game to 11-7 after one quarter. Garden City turned those final five points into a 13-2 run that gave the Buffaloes their first lead of the game at 15-13. The lead was short lived as Cole Murphy buried a three pointer five second later. Hays would trail again at 17-16 but end the first half on a 14-5 run building a 30-22 half time lead.

Highlights

Hays started the third quarter on a 11-0 run to grab control of the ball game. Garden City was held scoreless for the first 5:34 of the third quarter and didn’t hit a field goal until their was 3:55 left in the third. Hays took advantage to build their lead up to a game high 20 at 45-25. Like in the first half, Garden City wasn’t going away with out a fight. The Buffaloes went on a 13-3 run to get back into the game with less than four minutes remaining. Garden City twice cut the lead down to six, missing a three pointer on the second opportunity. Hays hit just enough free throws to keep Garden City at arms length, winning 58-49.

Coach Rick Keltner

Tyrese Hill was the only Indian in double figures scoring 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, both career highs. Overall the nine different Indians scored. Hays improves to 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Garden City loses for the first time in 2017 and falls to 3-7 and 2-1 in conference play.

The Hays High boys are off until Thursday when they travel to Colby for the Orange and Black Classic to play Falcon, Colorado at 3:00 in Colby High School.
