Hays Post

Girls: TMP 82, Trego 35
Boys: TMP 74, Trego 29

HAYS, Kan-Trego and TMP went toe to toe for the first five minutes of Tuesday’s Mid Continent League matchup at Al Billinger House.  That’s when the Lady Monarch defense took over, forcing 18 first half turnovers.  TMP finished the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 19-9 lead.  They scored the first 9 points of the second quarter to take complete control of the game as they took a 47-21 lead into the half.

The second half was much of the same.  TMP outscored Trego 25-11 in the third quarter and had a running clock in the fourth quarter on their way to the 82-35 win.  Trego drops to 2-6 on the season and 0-2 in the MCL.  TMP improves to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.  The Golden Eagles will host Ness City on Friday while TMP travels to Smith Center.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

A 12-0 run to start the game propelled the TMP Monarchs to a quick lead and Trego was never able to recover in a 74-29 Monarch victory.  The Golden Eagles struggled without leading scorer and rebounder Emmit Owens who left the game early in the first quarter after a mid-court collision. TMP used a big first half from Luke Ruder who scored 16 points to lead his Monarchs to a 43-14 halftime lead.

TMP pushed their lead to 37 points by the end of the third quarter and a running clock in the fourth quarter.  Ruder finished with a game high 18 points for TMP who moves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the MCL.  They play on the road in Smith Center on Friday

Hays falls to Liberal in battle of state ranked teams

Dustin Armbruster

Hays High and Liberal had their games delayed by a day when mother nature dumped snow on southwest Kansas Thursday night and Friday morning.  The two met on Saturday with all four teams ranked.  The Liberal girls entered the game #10 in Class 5A while the Hays girls entered the rankings at #10 in 4A-I right before Christmas break.  The Liberal boys entered 2017

Girls
Liberal 59 – Hays 44

Liberal scored the first seven points of the game as Hays tried to knock the rust off after not playing since December 13th.  Liberal built their lead up to eight at 10-2 before the Indians answered back with eight straight over the final two minutes of the first quarter and first basket of the second quarter.  The lead changed hands nine times in the second quarter and tied six more times.  The teams entered the locker rooms at half time tied at 27 a piece.

Highlights

Hays took their biggest lead of the third quarter at 33-30 when Talyn Kleweno hit her first three pointer of the game.  Liberal outscored Hays 15-7 rest of the quarter to build their lead to 42-37.  Hays did not score in the fourth quarter until there was 2:22 left in the game.  During that time Liberal scored twelve points, building their lead to 54-37.  Hays would be outscored 32-17 in the second half, falling 59-44.

Coach Kirk Maska

Kallie Leiker led the Indians with 11 points.  Jaycee Dale and Talyn Kleweno each added 10.  Hays will be back on the road Tuesday to play conference leader Great Bend.  The Indians fall to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the WAC.  Liberal improves to 6-1 and 1-0.

Boys
Liberal 70 – Hays 42

Hays showed little rust out of the winter break taking an early 9-3 lead on three pointers by three different players in Liberal.  Hays built their lead up to seven at 14-7 with 1:30 left.  Hays would score just 11 points the remainder of the half.  Liberal went on a 22-2 run through the first four minutes of the second quarter.  The Redskins built the lead as high as 18 at 39-21 before Hays scored the final four points of the quarter to trail at halftime 39-25.

Highlights

Things got worse for Hays in the third quarter being outscored 23-7 after being outscored 23-9 in the second quarter.  Liberal pushed the lead as high has 32 at 62-30.  With Hays trailing 62-32 entering the fourth quarter, the clock ran continuous outside of time outs and Hays fell 70-42.

Coach Rick Keltner

Claiborne Kyles scored 14 for the Indians while Liberal put five in double figures.  Hays falls to 5-1 on the season and starts conference play at 0-1.  Liberal improves to 7-0 and 1-0.  Hays High is back on the road Tuesday in Great Bend.

ELLIS, Kan-TMP went on a 17-0 run midway through the first quarter and into the second quarter to take control of Friday night’s Mid Continent League match-up with the Ellis Lady Railers.  Leading 10-8, TMP scored 17 in a row to take a 27-10 lead early in the second quarter.  The Lady Monarchs took a 39-12 lead into the half thanks to 12 points off the bench from Aubrey Koenigsman.

The second half was much of the same for TMP as they continued to roll. The Lady Monarchs outscored the Lady Railers 16-9 in the third quarter and led 55-21 at that point which led to a running clock in the fourth quarter.  TMP picked up their sixth win with the 65-26 victory.  Koenigsman led the way with 17 for TMP.  Kaylyn Foster led the way for Ellis with 9 points.

The Lady Monarchs improve to 6-1 and will play Sacred Heart in Salina on Saturday.  Ellis drops to 4-4 and won’t play until next Friday when they travel to Hill City

ROSE MCFARLAND INTERVIEW

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

The TMP boys used a strong early start to take an 15-7 lead after the first quarter.  The Monarchs extended that lead to double digits in the second quarter and led 29-16 at halftime.  Balance was the name of the game or TMP as 8 players scored in the first half of play.  Easton Smith scored 12 first half points for Ellis.

TMP used their defensive pressure to keep Ellis at arm’s length most of the second half leading by as many as 15 points.  Ellis closed the gap to 13 points, 40-27, after three quarters of play and started the fourth quarter on fire. The Railers went on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 40.  That’s when TMP slammed the door shut and finished the game on a 16-7 run to pick up the 56-47 victory.

TMP improves to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Mid Continent League.  Ellis drops to 4-4 and 0-2 in the MCL and will play next Friday in Hill City.  TMP is on the road in Salina on Saturday to face Sacred Heart.

Tressa Becker signs with Barton

By Dustin Armbruster

Tressa Becker’s journey to college soccer began at six years old when she started playing with the Hays Soccer Club. All the years of work came to pay off on Thursday when she signed a national letter of intent to play for Barton County Community College. Becker stepped into a leadership role both on and off the field during her junior season to go along with her soccer skills during practice and games. The package of skill and leadership is one of the reasons that former coach Jim Maska believes that Barton wanted Becker to be a part of their program.

Tressa Becker

Becker also found a comfort level with the head coach for the Cougars, which led to an easier decision when picking a school. Becker still has one more season though to complete for the Indians, one she knows will have a little less stress attached to it since her college decision has been made.

Previous Coach Jim Maska

Becker plans on majoring in elementary education.
