Indian’s softball season closes at state

By Dustin Armbruster

Two five run innings by the Kansas City Piper Pirates was too much for Hays High to overcome Friday at the 4A-1 state tournament. Hays fell 10-5 to the top seeded Pirates to end their season at 10-11. Hays led off the game with a pair of singles but could not capitalize. Piper scored five runs and sent ten to the plate to take the lead for good.

Hays did get within a single run with two outs in the top of the third. The Indians loaded the bases for Tessa Stickel who launched a grand slam over the fence in right center field. The Stickel blast put Hays back into the game, trailing 5-4. The momentum though was short lived. In the bottom half of the same inning Piper added five more runs to increase their lead to 10-4.

Highlights

Stickel narrowly missed another homer to left field when the ball hit the fence just eighteen inches from the top. That double drove in the Indian’s fifth and final run of the contest.

Coach Erin Wagner

Piper’s Abby Henry who has signed to play at Washburn took the victory in the circle for the Pirates who are now 19-2. Kaitlyn Brown was tagged with the loss allowing five runs over just two-thirds of an inning. Jaysa Wichers allowed five runs over 5.1 innings pitching in relief.

TMP Softball season ends in Quarterfinals

MANHATTAN, Kan.-TMP scored one run in the top of the first inning and had the bases loaded with only one out.  The stage was set for a big inning for the number eight seed Lady Monarchs against the top seed Southeast of Saline. TMP would not score again as they grounded into a fielder’s choice and struck out to end the inning.  Southeast would score a run to tie the game in the bottom of the first and would take the lead for good with two runs in the third inning.

After seeing the Lady Trojans score a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead, TMP loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth but were unable to score.  Southeast of Saline put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the inning, winning by a final score of 8-1.

TMP finishes their season with a record of 17-6.  Southeast of Saline advanced to the state semifinals against Oskaloosa, losing 10-1 to complete their season at 23-2.

Ellis baseball’s season ends with loss at state

GREAT BEND – The Ellis baseball team saw their season come to an end Thursday at the 2-1A state tournament in Great Bend falling 5-0 to Medicine Lodge in a game that was delayed for more than three hours because of severe weather.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first four innings but in the fifth the Indians took advantage of three Ellis errors and two walks scoring four to take a 4-0 lead. Medicine Lodge added a single run in the sixth inning on their way to the 5-0 win.

Ellis was held without a hit in the game and stranded seven runners on base.

Easton Smith allowed five runs on four hits, walked six and struck out four in the loss .

The Railers finished the year 17-5.

Medicine Lodge plays Sacred Heart in the semifinals Friday at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

The Knights upset the No. 1 seed Sedan 3-2 Thursday.

Severe weather and heavy rains force changes to state tournaments

Heavy rains and severe weather across Kansas postponed a number of first round state softball and baseball games.

TMP’s softball team will face top seed Southeast of Saline at 10 a.m. Friday in Manhattan at the 3A state tournament. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday evening.

According to the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) there will be no third place game. They instead will attempt to play the first round and semifinal games Friday with the championship game on Saturday.

Hays High’s first round game with Kansas City Piper at the 4A-D1 tournament in Salina has been postponed to Friday as well, although no start time has been set as of Thursday night. The two teams were set to play Thursday at 5p.m.

Weather also altered the 4A-D2 tournament on Thursday. Russell/Victoria’s opening round game against Goodland has been moved to Friday. They will play the second game of the day.

Lady Indians rally falls short in quarterfinals

WICHITA, Kan.-The Hays High Lady Indian soccer team ran out of time in their 4-3-2-1A State Quarterfinal match against Wichita Trinity Academy on Tuesday night in Wichita, losing 3-2.  It didn’t take Trinity long to score as Julia Rogg struck first in the 6th minute of the match.  The Lady Knights were able to tack on another goal in the 26th minute off the foot of Baylor signee,  Ally Henderson.  The lead was 2-0 at halftime.

Rogg would score again midway through the second half to give Trinity a commanding 3-0 lead.  That is when the Hays High game came to life.  Sydney Sulzman smoked one through the back of the net in the 71st minute to tally the first score for the Lady Indians.  Hays High was not done yet.  Following a hand ball in the box, Allie Rome was able to convert the penalty kick in the 78th minute.  The Lady Indians were able to get the ball deep in the Trinity zone in the final minute but were unable to get a shot on goal.

With the loss Hays High ends their season with a record of 11-7.  Trinity improves to 14-3 and will take on DeSoto in the state semi-finals on Thursday in Topeka.

Hays High girls’ soccer advances to state quarterfinals

TOWANDA, Kan. – The Hays High girls’ soccer team used two Sydney Sulzman goals, lengthy possession time and solid defense to upend Circle 2-1 Thursday night in Towanda. Sulzman struck for her first goal in the 30th minute from just inside the goalie box on the far right side. It did not take Circle long to answer as Jill McCoy was able to sneak one by Hays’ goalkeeper Taylor Groen-Younger.

Sulzman would strike again at the beginning of the second half to give Hays High the lead in the 43rd minute. Circle tried to mount a comeback late in the match but did not have enough fuel left in their tank to really challenge the fresh legs of Hays High.

Head coach Jim Maska on his team advancing to the state quarterfinals
