Ellis baseball advances to state

ELLIS-, Kan. – The Ellis baseball team has advanced to the 2-1A state tournament after a 4-1 win over Ell-Saline in their own regional final Thursday. The Railers jumped out early scoring two in the first inning then added two in the fourth for the final margin.

Clay Feik, Daniel Carbajal and Dalton Hensley each had two of the Railers 10 hits. Easton Smith picks up the win allowing the one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks.

Ellis has won six straight and improves to 15-4. They will play Thursday in the state quarterfinals in Great Bend.

The Ellis softball team lost to Republic County 13-1 Thursday in the regional championship game at the Sylvan Grove regional.

TMP-Marian girls’ soccer falls in regional final

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer season came to an end Thursday with a 2-0 loss to defending state champion Topeka Hayden in the second round of the 4-1A Central/South Central regional. The Monarchs had several scoring chances in the first half but the match which was scoreless at halftime.

The Wildcats, who beat TMP-M in last year’s state quarterfinals, scored their first goal with 25 minutes left in the second half. They would score again with 16:30 to play.

TMP-Marian ends their remarkable season at 11-4-1.

TMP-Marian softball wins own regional; headed to state

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team scored 11 runs on 15 hits and rolled to an 11-1, five inning victory over Southwestern Heights to win their own 3A regional Wednesday at the TMP-Marian Softball Complex and advance to the 3A state tournament.

Game Highlights

The Monarchs scored single runs in each of the first three innings then added four in the fourth and fifth.

Bailey Lacy went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the offensive explosion and also picked up the win in the circle. Lacy allowed the one run on two hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks. Alison Helget and Emily Schulte both had three hits. Schulte drove in three runs.

The Monarchs beat Scott City in the semifinals 12-3. They scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the second then blew the game open with a run in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Alison Helget and Brianna Romme both had three hits and Bailey Lacy drove in three. Helget picked up the win with nine strikeouts and three walks and eight hits.

The Monarchs have won four straight and six of their last seven and will take a 17-6 record in to the 3A state tournament next Thursday in Manhattan. It’s the first state tournament appearance for TMP-M since 2010 and the eighth in program history.

Hays High softball headed to state tournament

HAYS – The Hays High Indians beat Buhler and McPherson Wednesday to win the 4A-D1 Regional softball tournament at the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex in Hays. The Indians improved to 10-10 on the season and have qualified for the state tournament next week in Salina.

Hays High hit three home runs in the championship game and come from behind to beat McPherson 14-11.

McPherson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning as the first five hitters reached base and came in to score.

Hays would chip away at the Bullpups lead scoring one in the first and four in the third inning, highlighted by an Albany Schaffer two-run home run making it 6-5 McPherson after three innings.

After McPherson scored three in the top of the fourth to go up 9-5 the Indian bats came alive scoring eight runs on seven hits. The Indians got a pair of two-run home runs from Nicole Dinkel and Shannon Schumacher, her first of the season putting Hays up 13-9 after four innings.

Freshmen Jaysa Wichers allowed just two runs on three hits and struck out four in three and two-thirds innings to earn the win in relief.

Schaffer was two-for-two, scored three times and drove in two. Tessa Stickel was three-for-three scored twice and drove in two.

Semifinal Game Hays 11, Buhler 3
In the first game of the day, the semifinal matchup with Buhler the Indians scored six runs in the sixth inning in the 11-3 win.

Tessa Stickel was three-for-four with a two-run home run and scored three times. Albany Schaffer was also on base three times and scored three runs.

Jaysa Wichers allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven in a complete game victory.

Hays will play in the first round of the 4A-D1 state softball tournament at Bill Burke Complex in Salina Thursday.

Hays High baseball falls in regional semifinals

McPHERSON, Kan. – Buhler scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game and defeat the Hays High Indians 6-0 in the McPherson 4A Division I regional semifinals at the Grant Sports Complex.

Marcus Altman allowed all six runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.

The Indians (12-9) were held to three hits, two of them in the sixth inning, and had only four runners get past first base.

 

Big inning dooms TMP-Marian baseball in regional semifinals

LARNED, Kan. – TMP-Marian was held to one hit and lost 7-1 to Lakin Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the Larned 3A regional. The Broncs scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 tie. The big frame came after the Monarchs scored a run off an error in the top of the inning.

The Monarchs committed three errors in the inning that kicked the door wide open for the Broncs.

Lakin’s Ryder Yakel struck out 11 and walked none in the complete game victory.

TMP-Marian ends their season with a 16-6 record.

TMP baseball blasts Scott City; Lakin next

LARNED, Kan. – TMP hit the ball hard early and often in their 15-0 rout of Scott City in the opening round of the 3A Larned regional Tuesday night in Larned. The Monarchs scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and opened up the flood gates with seven runs in the second inning, batting 11. TMP finished off the Beavers with six more runs in the bottom of the third inning to end the game early.

The Monarchs scored their 15 runs on 14 hits, four walks, three errors and a catcher’s interference to boot. Gavin Schumacher and Jared Vitztum both had three hits. Schumacher doubled and tripled and drove in three. Vitztum, Ryan Ruder, Ricky Hockett and Chase Romme all drove two.

Jared Rack got the win for TMP facing only 11 batters, giving up one hit and one walk to improve to 4-0 on the season.  The Monarchs will match up with Lakin in the regional semifinals at 4 pm from Larned.

Ellsworth defeated Syracuse 4-0 in the other quarterfinal and will play No. 1 seed Larned at 2 pm.

HHS girls’ soccer advances in 4-1A regional

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays High girls’ soccer team jumped out early and never looked back as they beat Winfield 5-1 in their 4-1A Central/South Central regional opener Tuesday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

Goals from Lanie Schmidt and Sydney Sulzman gave the Indians an early 2-0 lead. Hannah McGuire, Kallie Lieker and Tressa Becker also scored as Hays improves to 10-6.

Hays will now travel to Towanda Thursday where they will play Circle HS at 6 pm. They Thunderbirds knocked off Wichita Independent 1-0 on penalty kicks in their opener Monday.

Trego wins own golf regional; Plainville second

WaKEENEY, Kan. –  Trego finished first and Plainville second at the Trego 2A regional golf tournament Tuesday at the Big Creek Golf Course. Both qualify for the 2A state tournament next week in Salina. The Golden Eagles shot a 340 and won by 26 strokes over the second place Cardinals.

Trego placed three in the top-ten led by Emmit Owens who finished second with a 7-over-par 77. He finished two shots behind Oberlin’s Kelly Brown. Dion Reetz finished fourth with an 83 and Dalton Mai was sixth with an 84.

Gunner Kerns shot an 86 and led Plainville with an eighth place finish. Jared Copeland finished 10th with a 90.

Chase Hudson of Ellis also shot a 90 and locked up the final individual spot to state with an 11th place finish.

The 2A state tournament is Monday at the Salina Country Club.

Hays High, TMP-Marian softball postponed to Wednesday

HAYS, Kan. – Both the Hays High and TMP-Marian softball regionals scheduled for Tuesday have been pushed back a day due to wet fields. The Indians 4A Division I regional at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex will now be played on Wednesday at the same time. McPherson will play Ulysses in the first game at 3 pm with Hays High and Buhler playing at 4:30 pm with the finals scheduled for 6 pm.

The TMP-Marian 3A regional will begin at 1 pm with the conclusion of Monday’s final game between Plainville/Stockton and Larned at 1 pm. The winner will play top-seed Southwestern Heights at 3 pm. TMP-M will take on Scott City at 4:30 pm with the finals scheduled for 6 pm.

Tuesday’s TMP-Marian baseball game vs. Scott City in Larned is still on but will be played at 7 pm.

Hays High’s regional opener vs. Buhler in McPherson will be played Wednesday at 4 pm.

TMP-Marian girls’ soccer advances in 4-1A regional

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team had no problem handling the rain or Rose Hill in their 4-1A regional opener Monday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. The Monarchs cruised past the Rockets 10-0 to advance to Thursday’s regional final.

Aubrey Koeningsman had three goals. Megan Koeningsman and Bailey Hageman both scored twice. Taylor Gabel, Ashley Ostrander and Tyra Younie also added goals.

Gracie Schmidt had two saves in goal in the second half helping the Monarchs to their eighth shutout of the season.

TMP-M is now 11-3-1 and will host the winner of Tuesday’s match between Topeka-Hayden (8-8) and Wichita Collegiate (3-6-1) at 4:30 pm Thursday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

TMP-Marian golf qualifies for 3A state tourney

SYRACUSE, Kan. – The TMP-Marian boys golf team is headed to state for a sixth straight year after a second place finish at the Syracuse 3A regional at the Tamerisk Golf Club. The Moanrchs shot a 368, one shot ahead of third place Cimarron and seven behind first place Syracuse.

Hayden Rohr finished third with an 80 and Collin Werth was fifth with an 85.

The 3A state tournament is at the Salina Municipal Golf Course on Monday.

HHS boys golf headed back to state

GOODLAND, Kan. – For an eighth consecutive year, the Hays High boys golf team is headed to the state tournament. The Indians shot a 335 and won the team title by 24 shots over Goodland at the Goodland 4A regional Monday at the Sugar Hill Golf Club. It is the fourth consecutive regional title for Hays High.

The Indians placed four in the top-10 led by freshman Tradgon McCrae who won the individual title with an 80, edging Goodland freshman Garin Ihrig by one stroke. Payton Ruder finished third with an 83, Allen Zollinger finished eighth with an 85 and Peyton Keiffer came in ninth with an 87. Justin McCullick shot an 89 and finished 11th.

The 4A state tournament is at the Bentwood Golf Course in Ulysses Monday.
