Indian baseball splits with Cougars

SALINA, Kan. – The Hays High baseball team split their doubleheader at Salina South Friday, The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and held on for a 3-2 win in the opener. The Cougars scored five in the second then used an eight-run sixth for a 14-4 run-rule win in game two.

Cole Schumacher reached on catcher’s obstruction, stole second than advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch to give the Indians (6-2) a 1-0 lead in the first. Schumacher’s sacrifice fly scored Jarett Pfannenstiel then Marcus Altman doubled to score Drew Young to push the lead to 3-0. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but only managed one run. Dalton Stout gave up a single but then got to fly outs to end the game and get the save.

Jarett Pfannenstiel allowed one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks for the win.

The Cougars scored five in the second to take control of the second game. Hays answered with three in the third and another run in the fourth to pull within 5-4 but South used an eight-run sixth to put the game away.

Palmer Hutchison allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings and takes the loss.

Hays High softball swept at Salina South

SALINA, Kan. – The Hays High softball team was swept by Salina South Friday. The Cougars scored seven runs in the second inning in a 7-4 win in game 1 then use a three-run fourth to take the lead for good in a 10-2 game two victory. The Indians drop to 4-4 on the season.

The Cougars used six hits including a pair of doubles to take the lead in the first game. Hays scored four in the sixth on singles from Kylie Brown, Jaysa Wichers and Madison Prough. Kaitlyn Brown suffered the loss, giving up all seven runs on 11 hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Prough and Mackenzie Fagan both singled to drive in a run in the second inning which gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the second game, but South answered with three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back for good. They added two in the fifth and four in the sixth for the run-rule victory.

Jaysa Wichers pitched five innings and gave up all 10 runs on 13 hits, two of them home runs, and takes the loss.

Montgomery leaving TMP

TMP-Marian head football coach and teacher John Montgomery is leaving the school at the end of the year. Montgomery announced his resignation on Twitter, and it was confirmed on the school’s website Friday.

Montgomery took over as the head coach of the Monarch program in 2012, after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator for two seasons. The Monarchs went 5-31 in the four seasons under Montgomery. Including finishing 1-8 this past season

According to TMP, Montgomery has accepted a teaching and coaching position in McPherson beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.

Through the TMP Football Twitter account Montgomery said, “It has been an honor to work with all the young men and women at TMP over the last 4 years. I will forever be a monarch fan. Thank you.”

The school said a search for the next head Monarch football coach is now underway.

Hays High softball sweeps Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Hays High softball team opened up Western Athletic Conference play with a pair of wins in Dodge City Thursday. The Indians hit five home runs in an 18-5 rout in game one then raced out to an 8-0 lead after two innings and won the second contest 13-7 as they improve to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Tessa Stickel and Albany Schaffer both hit two home runs in the opener and Nicole Dinkel added a three-run shot in the Indians 10-run seventh. Kaitlyn Brown strikes out seven and walks three allowing just two earned runs in the complete game victory.

Schaffer and Kaitlyn Brown both had three of the Indians 15 hits in the second game. Brown drove in three and Stickel homered. Jaysa Wichers picks up the win allowing five runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

The Indians are back in action Friday with a doubleheader at Salina South.

TMP-Marian girls soccer wins in Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team edged Dodge City 1-0 Thursday in Dodge City. Ashlyy Ostrander scored the lone goal in the 57th minute on an assist from Megan Koeningsman.

The Monarchs controlled the ball much of the match and had seven shots on goal and nine corner kicks.

Doenna Wellbrock had five saves in goal as TMP-Marian improves to 3-1 on the season.

HHS girls soccer team beats Liberal

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Hays High girls soccer team put an end to a three-match losing streak Thursday afternoon, with a 2-1 win over Liberal.

Talyn Kleweno scored both goals for the Indians.

Hays improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Indians travel to Junction City Monday at 5:30 p.m.

HHS baseball sweeps Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Hays High baseball team opened up Western Athletic Conference play with a couple of wins over Dodge City Tuesday. The Indians beat the Red Demons 7-5 and 15-2 to move to 5-1 on the season.

HHS trailed 4-1 in the opener before scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth then four in the sixth. Cole Schumacher went the distance with seven strikeouts and two walks for the win.

The Indians scored five in the second then eight in the third to take control of the second game. Connor Rule had three of the Indians 15 hits and drove in three. Marcus Altman pitched all five innings with three strikeouts and one walk and gets the win.

The Indians travel to Salina South Friday.

Monarch baseball splits with Garden City

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian baseball team split with Garden City at the Monarch Sports Complex Tuesday. Gavin Schumacher’s double scored Ryan Ruder in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Monarchs to a 5-4 win in the opener. Schumacher’s game winner was the fourth straight hit in the innings. Ricky Hockett allowed four runs, two earned on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk and picked up the win. TMP (4-2) won the first game despite committing five errors.

Garden City scored 10 in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and won the second game 12-4. Ryan Ruder gave up seven runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout and suffers the loss. Tate Garcia had two TMP’s six hits in the game.

The Monarchs host Dodge City Monday.

Strong pitching leads TMP-Marian softball to sweep

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team got a pair of shutouts from Alison Helget and Bailey Lacey as they beat Sylvan 3-0 and Plainville 15-0 Tuesday at the TMP-Marian Sports Complex. Helget struck out 12 and allowed only one hit, a leadoff single in the third inning against Sylvan. The Monarchs (4-2) scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Lacy struck out seven and allowed just three hits, all singles, against Plainville. The Monarchs scored five in the second then added eight in the fourth for the four inning run-rule win. TMP taking advantage of 13 walks.

The Monarchs travel to Colby for a doubleheader on Monday.

KBCA All-State teams annouced

The TMP-Marian Monarchs had two players and the Hays High Indians one player named to the 2016 Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All-State basketball teams released Monday.

Hays High Senior Isaiah Nunnery was named to the 4A-Disivision I second team. Nunnery averaged 16.8 points per game, 5.2 rebounds and 4 assists per game as a senior. He was also named the Players of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference. Nunnery was selected to play in the KBCA All-Star game June 25th in Salina at Kansas Wesleyan.

TMP Senior Jared Vitztum was selected to the 3A second team. Vitztum was a first team Mid-Continent League selection after averaging 19.8 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game this past season. Vitztum was also selected to play in the KBCA All-Star game in June.

Sophomore Kayla Vitztum was also a 3A second team selection for the Monarchs. He averaged 14.5 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game this past season. She was a First team MCL selection.

In Class 1A-Division I Victoria’s Joe Dortland was a first team selection. Dortland averaged 15.4 points per game this season.

HHS boys golf wins Salina Central Invite

SALINA, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team won their first tournament of the season, taking the Salina Central Invitational by 19 strokes yesterday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. The Indians had the top three individual finishers and fired a 308.

Trey McCrae won the individual title with a three-over 73. Allen Zollinger was second with a 74 and Payton Ruder third with a 76.

TMP-Marian baseball splits with Abilene

HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian baseball team scored 17 run on nine hits to beat Abilene 17-2 in game two of their doubleheader Friday at the TMP-Marian Sports Complex. The Cowboys broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the fifth then added three in the sixth to win the opener 7-3.

Ricky Hockett struck out five and walked none in the second game to pick up the win in the four inning run-rule victory. He went 2-for-2 with with two triples and two walks at the plate with three RBI’s and four runs scored. Chase Romme and Gavin Schumacher add two hits each/

The Monarchs committed six errors in the first game with all of the Cowboys runs unearned. Ryan Ruder suffered the loss allowing seven unearned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Ricky Hockett had two of TMP’s five hits with a double and an RBI.

KSHSAA announces baseball regional sites; HHS and TMP on the road

KSHSAA LogoTOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas State High School Activities Association has released hosts sites for the upcoming regional baseba tournaments. Both Hays High and TMP-Marian will be on the road in their respective classifications.

2016 Postseason Baseball Regional Assignments

The Indians 4A-Division I regional will take place on May 17th at the Grant Sports Complex in McPherson and include Buhler, McPherson and Ulysses. The winner of the regional advances to the 4A-Division I state tournament May 26-27 at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

The Monarchs 3A regional will be held at Moffet Stadium in Larned and also take place on May 16-17. Ellsworth, Lakin, Larned, Scott Community and Syracuse round out the field. The winner advances to the 3A state tournament May 26-27 at Kansas State’s Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.
