Lady Monarchs dominate first round in Hutch

By JEREMY McGUIRE

TMP 51, Garden Plain 29

The TMP Lady Monarchs started Thursday’s 3A State Quarterfinal on a 6-0 run and would never trail in their 51-29 win over Garden Plain.  TMP would build their lead to 16-8 at the end of the first quarter after a Katelyn Zimmerman buzzer beater from the elbow.  The Lady Monarchs would extend the lead to double digits in the second quarter and led 29-18 at halftime.

Garden Plain would cut into the TMP lead in the third quarter and it was a single figure game, 33-25, midway through the period.  TMP would finish on an eight-nothing run to take a commanding 41-25 lead heading into the final quarter.  The Lady Owls knew they needed a strong start to the fourth quarter to give themselves a chance.

That strong quarter did not happen as the Lady Monarchs scored the first nine points of the quarter to complete a 17-0 run and give the Lady Monarchs a 50-25 lead.  Garden Plain could not solve the TMP defense throughout the game.  The Lady Monarchs used the full court press, half-court man to man and zone defense throughout the game to keep Garden Plain on their heels.

TMP improves to 22-2 on the season and have now won 20 consecutive games.  Kayla Vitztum was a bundle of energy all game long finishing with a game high 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.  Madyson Koerner added 13 for TMP and Zimmerman powered through with 11 points and 13 boards.  The Lady Monarchs will take on Silver Lake at 3pm on Friday in Hutchinson.  The undefeated Lady Eagles handled West Franklin 77-22 in their opener.

TMP girls move on to state, boys fall short

By JEREMY McGUIRE

Girls:  TMP 60, Beloit 48

TMP found themselves in unfamiliar territory Saturday night when they trailed Beloit 12-5 late in the first quarter of the 3A Sub-State Championship in Norton.  The Lady Monarchs  received a lift from Madyson Koerner when she nailed two late threes to cut the gap to 12-11 heading into the second quarter.  TMP would take the lead late in the second quarter on a Melissa Pfeifer three and free throw.  The Lady Trojans answered with a three of their own to regain the lead.  Koerner would find herself open just before half and she hit her third three of the game to give the Lady Monarchs the 23-21 lead at halftime.

TMP roared out of the gates in the third quarter scoring 12 of the first 17 points.  After leading by five points, 28-23, the Lady Monarchs would not allow Beloit to get any closer.  TMP took a 38-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Lady Monarchs extended their lead to double figures at 45-34.  The largest lead for TMP was the 12 points when they reached the final score of 60-48.  Koerner led the way for TMP with 18 points, Kayla Vitztum 15, Megan Koenigsman added 12 and Pfiefer 9.

TMP has now won 19 games in a row and improves to 21-2 on the season and will travel to Hutchinson next week for the 3A State Tournament.  They will open up play on Thursday from the Sports Arena.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  Norton 62, TMP 50

The third time was the charm for the Norton Bluejays as they took out TMP 62-50 in their 3A Sub-State Championship match-up.  Norton, who had lost to TMP twice this season, controlled the pace throughout the game. The Bluejays held an 11-10 advantage after the first quarter.  Tyus Henson paced the way in the second quarter by scoring 10 of his 15 points to help Norton to a 27-22 halftime lead.

TMP would mount a comeback in the third quarter, taking a 36-33 lead late.  Norton would score the final four points of the quarter to take a one point lead heading to the fourth quarter.  TMP would re-gain the lead with the first bucket of the fourth quarter.  That’s when things fell apart for the Monarchs.  Norton would score the next 10 points to take a commanding 47-38 lead, a lead they would not reliquish, picking up the 62-50 win.

With the loss TMP finishes their season at 19-4.  Jared Vitztum led the scoring for TMP with 15 points.

Hays falls to McPherson to end season

By Dustin Armbruster

It was a rematch from the 2015 sub-state championship as Hays and McPherson battled for a 4A-1 state tournament berth on Saturday night. Twelve months ago the game was in Hays and the McPherson Bullpups won on their way to an undefeated state championship. In 2016 both teams traveled three plus hours to Ulysses.

Hays scored the first five points of the game then went cold as McPherson used a 11-2 run over the next five minutes. The Indian’s Isaiah Nunnery buried a three at the end of the first quarter to get back within a single point 11-10.

Highlights

McPherson pushed their advantage as high as six in the second quarter following a 8-3 run to start the quarter. The Indians responded back with three consecutive threes to grab the lead back at 22-19 with 4:30 left before half. The two teams swapped the lead twice more with McPherson building a five point lead until Nunnery scored the final points of the half making the score 32-29 in favor of McPherson.

Hays took the lead twice in the third quarter following back to back three pointers from Nunnery to go up 39-36 and then a Laken Jacobs basket gave the Indians a 41-40 lead inside of two minutes left in the quarter. McPherson though reclaimed the lead at 42-41 heading to the fourth quarter.

Hays took the lead four more times in the fourth quarter. The final coming on a steal and lay up by Drew Young at 53-51 with 3:35 remaining. Hays would only score two more points the remainder of the way. McPherson took the final three plus minutes to out score Hays 14-2 and take the win 65-55.

Coach Rick Keltner

The game featured 17 lead changes. Hays shot 50% from the field and McPherson 60%. Hays was led by Isaiah Nunnery with 22 points. Drew Young scored 15. Nunnery finishes 9th all-time in scoring, 3rd in assists and 2nd in steals over the course of 91 games. McPherson was led by Ben Pyle with 25. Drew Pyle scored 12 and Jacob Loeker added 10.

Hays ends the year at 17-5. McPherson will defend their state title next week in Salina with a 21-1 record.

TMP steams into finals

TMP 61, Russell 37

Russell held an early 3-2 over TMP in Friday’s sub-state semifinals in Norton.  The Lady Monarchs proceeded to go on a 14-0 run to end the first quarter and lead 16-3.  The Lady Broncos would answer with the first four points of the second quarter to bring the TMP lead back to single digits at 16-7 and TMP took off again.

The Lady Monarchs outscored Russell 23-11 in the second quarter to take a commanding 39-14 lead at halftime. TMP shot a sizzling 63.6% from the field in the first half and out rebounded Russell 17 to four.  Kayla Vitztum and Katelyn Zimmerman combined for 29 points in the first have to lead the Lady Monarchs.

Hays season continues on

By Dustin Armbruster

For the second year in a row, the Hays High Indians opened up play in one of the toughest sub-states in class 4A-1 against the Buhler Crusaders. Hays at 16-4 and Buhler at 15-5 claimed the two and three seed. McPherson entered post-season play at 19-1 as the one seed taking on fourth seeded Ulysses at 6-14.

Hays could not have drawn up a more picture perfect first quarter. Behind 12 first quarter points on four three point field goals from Isaiah Nunnery, Hays ran out with a 19-0 lead after the first eight minutes. Hays pushed the lead up to 21 points on three occasions in the second quarter.

Highlights

Buhler didn’t score their first points until the 6:40 mark of the second quarter on a pair of free throws. The Crusaders missed their first eleven shots before getting a field goal with 4:05 left in the first half.

Hays took a 32-12 lead to the half time locker room. Some where in the locker room momentum shifted.

Buhler stormed out of the half time break with a 8-0 run forcing a Hays time out at 32-20. Buhler ended hitting 10 of the first 13 shots of the second half getting back within two at 36-34. The Crusaders had a chance to take a lead on a three at that point but came up short. Hays ended the third quarter with a Maddux Winter three point play to go up five 41-36.

Like they did in the third quarter, Buhler started the fourth quarter with a run. This time a 6-0 run gave the Crusaders their first lead at 42-41 with 5:34 left in the game. Hays responded to the deficit with a seven point run to go up 48-42 over the next sixty seconds. Buhler twice got back to within a point. With the Indians leading 50-49, Drew Young stuck a three from the top of the key, giving Hays a two possession lead rest of the way.

Coach Rick Keltner

Hays hit just enough free throws and one field goal over the final 1:30 to secure a 60-53 victory. Isaiah Nunnery scored a game high 26. It his his fifth consecutive game scoring 20 or more points. Maddux Winter added ten in the victory.

Hays improves to 17-4 on the year. Buhler ends their season at 15-6. Hays will play the winner of McPherson/Ulysses on Saturday evening for a berth in the 4A-1 state tournament.

TMP wins 2OT thriller

By JEREMY McGUIRE

TMP 55, Beloit 51  2OT

TMP and Beloit battled tooth and nail in Thursday night’s 3A Sub-State Semifinal in Norton and four quarters was not enough to decide the outcome.  TMP held their largest lead of six points early in the second quarter at 16-10. Beloit would close the half on a 14-5 run to lead 24-21 going to the locker room at the break.

TMP scored the first bucket of the third quarter to pull within one and that’s when the Trojans started to put some things together.  They would score the next eight points to lead by nine midway through the third quarter.  The Monarchs chipped away at the lead and brought it down to a close 37-33 game heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter offense was hard to come by for either team, much like it had been the whole game.  Beloit led by six twice, the second time being a near knockout punch with just under two minutes to play after the fourth three of the game by Taylor Travis made it 44-38 in favor of the Trojans.  TMP would quickly answer when Jared Vitztum hit his second three of the game to cut the lead in half.  Peyton Hoffman got in the action with a steal and a bucket to cut the lead to one.  The Monarchs would hit a late free throw to tie the game and to overtime they went tied at 44.

In the first overtime both teams scored two points with TMP missing a late shot that to send the game to a second overtime.  That’s when TMP would take their first lead since they led 18-17 early in the second quarter. Hoffman’s offensive rebound and score put TMP up 48-46 and they would never trail again.  Ryan Ruder sealed the deal by hitting two late free throws to put the game out of reach.

Beloit finishes their season at 15-7.  TMP improves to 19-3 on the year and will play Norton in the sub-state title game on Saturday at 7:30pm in Norton.

Indian’s Payton Ruder will golf for Baker

By Dustin Armbruster

Payton Ruder knows that by signing with Baker University to golf he will be receiving much more than the chance to play 18. Ruder signed his letter of intent on Tuesday morning to golf for the Baker Wildcats out of Baldwin City, Kansas.

Ruder weighed the decision on what college to golf at and attend both on the athletic and academic side as well. He plans on heading into the engineering field. With Baker University’s connections to programs at the University of Kansas as well as opportunities in the Kansas City area, the fit was perfect.

Payton Ruder

Ruder has dropped three strokes per 18 holes off his score from freshman through junior seasons. A three time state qualifier, Ruder had his best season in 2015 firing a 72 and landing in 7th place. Ruder is also the back-to-back defending regional champion. He says though the goal this year is more about getting the entire team to state. Ruder will be the lone senior for this spring 2016 season, a season that got practices underway on Monday.

Coach Mark Watts

Ruder has placed in the top ten 15 times in his career including seven times last spring. He will also look to land on the All-WAC team for a fourth consecutive year after garnering 2nd team honors his freshman season and first team his sophomore and junior year.

But Baker will have to wait. For now Ruder is focused on the spring 2016 season and is glad to have his decision done and out of the way.
