Rodgers, Jones star for Packers in victory over Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Aaron Rodgers threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Aaron Jones on a big night for the Green Bay running back, and the Packers held off backup quarterback Matt Moore and the Kansas City Chiefs 31-24 on Sunday night.

Jones, who briefly left with a shoulder injury, had seven catches for 159 yards and added 67 on the ground – a big chunk of them in the closing minutes, when the Packers (7-1) sealed the win.

It was their first at Arrowhead Stadium since Nov. 4, 2007.

With reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes out with a dislocated kneecap, Moore took the reins of the Chiefs’ high-powered offense and fared quite well. He threw for 267 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the ex-high school coach’s first NFL start in more than two years.

The Chiefs (5-3) hoped Mahomes could make a miraculous recovery 10 days after hurting his knee in Denver in time to play. But after he was limited in practice throughout the week, coach Andy Reid announced Friday that the franchise quarterback would be inactive for the game.

So much for that Rodgers-Mahomes showdown everyone anticipated.

They had to settle for an entertaining matchup between division leaders instead.

The game started like most people outside the walls of 1 Arrowhead Drive expected, with Rodgers slicing up the defense and Green Bay marching for two quick touchdowns.

But after a shaky start by Moore, the journeyman quarterback and the rest of the Chiefs offense found a groove. They embarked on an 89-yard drive that ended with a make-it-rain 29-yard TD pass to Travis Kelce, then got a 30-yard pitch-and-catch to Mecole Hardman to knot the game.

The Chiefs led 17-14 at halftime, raising some eyebrows across the league.

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur made a couple of adjustments, though, and Rodgers and Co. began to move the ball once more. They used a 15-play drive that soaked up more than half the third quarter to get a tying field goal, then got the ball back when LeSean McCoy fumbled on the very next play.

Five players later, Rodgers conjured up more of his magic.

With third down at the 3, he dropped back and was flushed from the pocket. He rolled to his right and threw a blind pass to the back corner of the end zone, where Damien Williams somehow took the ball away from Chiefs linebacker Ben Niemann while tapping both feet inbounds.

Rodgers was lying flat on his back, staring at the sky, as the official signaled touchdown.

The Chiefs answered with another long drive, and just when it appeared they had finally been stopped, the Packers’ Tramon Williams was flagged for illegal use of hands. That gave Kansas City the ball inside the 5, and Damien Williams scored on the next play to tie it again.

It took the Packers all of 56 seconds to score the eventual winner.

Rodgers again found Jones out of the backfield, and this time he found a lane through the entire Kansas City secondary. It was a foot race from there, and the speedy running back hop-skipped over the goal line to finish off the 67-yard touchdown reception.

The Chiefs were forced to punt on their ensuing possession and never got another chance.

HALL OF FAME

The Chiefs honored TE Tony Gonzalez and SS/FB Johnny Robinson, their new entrants into the Hall of Fame, during a halftime ceremony. Both were presented with their Hall of Fame rings.

THE WORM TURNS

Jones twice reached the end zone thinking he’d scored, dropped to the turf and did “the worm.” The first was negated by a penalty, though he scored a few minutes later anyway. The second came on a 60-yard reception in which a replay showed Jones had stepped out of bounds at the 10.

STAR SEARCH

Along with Mahomes, the Chiefs missed five other starters: DE Frank Clark (neck), CB Kendall Fuller (thumb), LT Eric Fisher (groin), LG Andrew Wylie (ankle) and DT Chris Jones (groin).

Packers WR Davante Adams (toe) went through pregame warmups before he was scratched. But they did have LB Blake Martinez (hand) and SS Darnell Savage (ankle), who had missed the last two games.

Offense struggles in FHSU women’s soccer loss to RiverHawks

HAYS, Kan. – On another cold afternoon at FHSU Soccer Stadium, the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team fell victim to Northeastern State, 1-0. The Tigers now stand at 8-4-2 (4-2-2 MIAA), while Northeastern State improved its record to 11-4-1 (6-3-0 MIAA).

The first half told the story of the match. Going into a fierce north wind, Cailey Perkins attempted a shot just 90 seconds into the game. That proved to be the only offense the Tigers could muster until the 58th minute. After testing Megan Kneefel early with five shots, the RiverHawks were able to score on their sixth attempt of the match off the foot of Paulina Chavez. Chavez received a pass from Megan Chase and found an opening in the defense before sending the ball past a diving Kneefel. Northeastern State put up another five shots before the half with an 11-1 edge in shots.

With the wind now at their backs, the Tigers fought back in the second half. They put up six shots in the last 30 minutes of the match, testing the defense of the RiverHawks from every angle. However, Northeastern State’s defense withstood the test, allowing the RiverHawks to hang on for the 1-0 victory.

Five different Tigers attempted shots throughout the match, with Perkins and Taryn Schnell taking two shots and Chloe Montano, Jenna Prince and Darby Hirsch adding one shot each. Hirsch was responsible for the only shot on goal. Kneefel (7-3-2) made five saves in the match, including a sprawling save late in the first half to keep the Tigers within one.

The Tigers will play host to Nebraska-Kearney on Friday night (Nov. 1) for their final home match of the regular season. Senior night between the Tigers and Lopers will kick off at 7 p.m. at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

Vinatieri’s final kick gives Colts win over Broncos

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Adam Vinatieri made a 51-yard field goal with 22 seconds left Sunday to help the Indianapolis Colts rally for a 15-13 victory over Denver.

The NFL’s career scoring leader overcame two earlier misses to keep Indy (5-2) atop the AFC South with its third straight victory.

Denver (2-6) has lost two in a row.

The difference this time was the Broncos settled for two short field goals on time-consuming drives in the first half. Brandon McManus made a 21-yarder to cap a 17-play drive that consumed nearly eight minutes and a 29-yarder on their next possession when the Broncos burned nearly 5½ minutes in 13 plays to make it 6-0.

Indy finally answered with Vinatieri’s 55-yard field goal that dropped over the crossbar to make it 6-3 at the half.

Denver took a 13-3 lead when Royce Freeman weaved his way through the Colts defense on a 4-yard score to make it 13-3.

The Colts thought they had tied it when Marlon Mack followed Vinatieri’s second field goal with a 10-yard TD run. Instead, Vinatieri missed his fourth extra point of the season and Indy didn’t get a chance to take the lead until Jacoby Brissett took the Colts 56 yards in 86 seconds to set up Vinatieri’s third field goal of the day.

STAT SHEET

Broncos: Joe Flacco as 20 of 32 with 174 yards. … Phillip Lindsay had 14 carries for 56 yards, and Freeman has 12 carries for 40 yards. … Courtland Sutton had three receptions for 76 yards.

INJURY REPORT

Broncos: Right tackle Ja’Wuan James left in the first half with what appeared to be an injured right knee. He limped to the sideline then was carted to the locker room. He did not return. Left guard Dalton Risner hurt his ankle, but did return. Tight end Jeff Heuerman also injured his knee.

Colts: Rookie safety Khari Willis was ruled out after hurting his foot in the third quarter. Defensive tackles Grover Stewart and Denico Autry both left.

Late field goal propels Kansas to victory over Texas Tech

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Douglas Coleman fumbled on a blocked field goal return with two seconds to go and Liam Jones capitalized with a 32-yard field goal to give Kansas a 37-34 win over Texas Tech on Saturday night.

Nick McCann blocked Jones’ 40-yard attempt and the ball landed in the hands of Coleman, who ran to his left before attempting a lateral that did not touch another Tech player. Kansas regained possession and Jones sealed their first Big 12 win of the season.

Kansas (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) overcome an early three-possession deficit — and the ejection of team captain Bryce Tornedon for targeting.

Trailing 17-0 midway through the second quarter, the Jayhawks rallied heading into halftime, cutting the deficit to 17-14 as Carter Stanley rushed into the end zone to get Kansas on the board and then connected with Stephon Robinson for a 48-yard touchdown the following drive.

Stanley fueled the Jayhawk victory with 415 yards passing and four total touchdowns. Stephon Robinson Jr. caught six passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns.

Jett Duffey and Sarododrick Thompson were the main contributors in the Red Raiders’ 483 yards of total offense. Duffey connected on 23-of-34 attempts for 271 yards while Thompson rushed for 80 yards for Texas Tech (3-5, 1-4).

THE TAKEAWAY

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders’ hopes for bowl eligibility dwindle. In search of at least three wins through its final four matchups, Texas Tech finds West Virginia, TCU, Kansas State and Texas on the docket.

Kansas: The Jayhawk offense produced 527 yards in Brent Dearmon’s second matchup as offensive coordinator after 48 points and 569 yards of offense against then-No. 15 Texas. The switch at offensive coordinator appears to be paying off for previously-struggling offense.

UP NEXT

Texas Tech: Following a bye week, the Red Raiders will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia, to take on the Mountaineers on Nov 9.

Kansas: The Jayhawks will return to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to host Kansas State in the 117th Sunflower Showdown next Saturday.

Tigers hang on for win over Lopers

HAYS, Kan. – Chance Fuller threw for a career-high 435 yards and had a couple of key third down conversions to run out the clock as Fort Hays State ran their win streak to six games with a 37-31 win over Nebraska-Kearney Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. The now 6-2 Tigers have won eight straight over the Lopers who have a three-game win streak snapped and fall to 5-3.

The Tigers never trailed, building a 23-7 lead before the Lopers got a field goal late in the second quarter to trim the lead to 23-10 by halftime. Charles Tigner scored two of his three touchdowns in the first half, scoring on a 17-yard touchdown run and then a 15-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. A Dante Brown field goal and Layne Bieberle touchdown reception covered the Tiger scoring in the second quarter.

The Tigers had to hold off three surges from the Lopers in the second half to secure the game. The Lopers scored a touchdown on their first possession of the half to trim the Tiger lead to 23-17. FHSU had an answer with an 88-yard touchdown pass from Fuller to Manny Ramsey on 3rd and one toward the end of the third quarter to push the lead to 30-17.

The Lopers pulled within six once more on a TJ Davis 4-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers responded with a 12-play, 73-yard touchdown drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Tigner.

The final Loper threat came on the ensuing possession when UNK drove 75 yards on 11 plays and scored on a one-yard Darrius Webb touchdown run. It was Webb’s second rushing touchdown of the day to close the gap to 37-31.

Fuller hit Ramsey on a 10-yard strike on 3rd-and-nine 9 then completed a 10-yard pass to Harley Hazlett on 3rd-and-six to seal the game.

Fuller completed 28-of-38 passes and three touchdowns. Ramsey had a career-best 169 receiving yards on six catches, Layne Bieberle had 127 receiving yards on seven catches, and Hazlett had a team-high nine catches for 81 yards.

It’s the ninth 100-yard receiving game in Bieberle’s career, one shy of the record held by Lance Schwindt. Hazlett now has 167 career receptions, one shy of the FHSU record held by Eric Busenbark.

Tanner Hoekman led the Tiger defensive effort with 11 tackles, while Kolt Trachsel added 10. The Tigers held the nation’s third-best rushing offense to 287 yards on the ground, about 35 yards under their season average.

Fort Hays State travels to Jefferson City, Missouri next week for a meeting with Lincoln University (1-7). Kickoff is set for 1 pm.

FHSU volleyball comes up short at Central Oklahoma

EDMOND, Okla. – After dropping the opening set to Central Oklahoma, the Fort Hays State volleyball team fought back to level the match with a well-played second set Saturday. But the Bronchos regained control in the next two sets, taking down the Tigers in four, 23-25, 25-21, 13-25, 17-25. The Tigers move to 6-16 overall and 3-11 in conference play, while the Bronchos are now 16-8 overall and 8-6 in MIAA action.

The teams traded points early in the first set before Fort Hays State opened up a four-point lead, 12-8. UCO captured 10 of the next 13 points to go in front, 18-15, before the Tigers battled back to regain the lead after four consecutive kills. Central Oklahoma responded by scoring four of the next five points to provide enough cushion to hold off the Tigers, 25-23.

The Tigers tightened things up in the second set, recording just two errors while outhitting the Bronchos, .292-.231. Fort Hays State trailed as late as 17-16 before rattling off four-straight points to take the lead for good. Morgan West and Emily Ellis both recorded kills before combining for a block to put FHSU in front, 20-17. UCO later closed the gap to 22-21, but a pair of Broncho errors and a kill from Tatum Bartels allowed the Tigers to level the match with a 25-21 win.

Fort Hays State opened the third set with an 8-4 lead, but a 13-1 run fueled by 10-straight points gave the Bronchos a commanding lead. The Tigers then led as late as 11-10 in the fourth set before UCO rattled off six-straight points to go in front for good.

Delaney Humm recorded a double-double for the Tigers, totaling 14 kills, 12 digs and two assists. Bartels added 10 kills, two service aces and one block. Abbie Hayes led the team with 21 digs with Taylor White and Paige Baird adding 17 digs each. Katie Darnell totaled 23 assists while White added 15. Ellis was the lone Tiger with multiple blocks (two) while chipping in seven kills.

After playing eight of 10 matches on the road in October, the Tigers will return home for three matches in a five-day stretch beginning Friday (Nov. 1) when Central Missouri comes to town. First serve is set for 6 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Thompson scores 4 TDs as K-State stuns No. 5 Sooners

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — There was never a moment of uncertainty on Kansas State’s sideline when fifth-ranked Oklahoma raced to an early lead, or when the wounded Sooners began to mount a frantic fourth-quarter comeback.

There might have been just a bit when they recovered an onside kick.

“It was a little anxious,” Wildcats defensive end Wyatt Hubert said.

Anxiousness that soon gave way to elation.

Officials reviewed the recovery with 1:45 left in the game and determined the ball hit an Oklahoma player a yard early, giving it to the Wildcats. They ran out the rest of the clock to finish off a 48-41 victory that dealt the Sooners’ national title hopes a major blow.

“Oklahoma isn’t a team that is used to facing adversity very well,” said Hubert, who along with the rest of the Kansas State defense did just enough to hold Heisman Trophy contender Jalen Hurts in check.

“If you can put their backs against the wall,” he said, “things are going to go more smoothly.”

Oklahoma (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) tried to make the case that its player was blocked into the ball on the onside kick. But by the time the Sooners headed for the bus, the scoreboards inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium still read the same.

“We had a similar situation at Baylor my first year. They engaged our player and it definitely hit him before the 10-yard,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said, “but I was under the impression if they engage our player into it that there’s no illegal touching. It was a 50-50 call that didn’t go our way.”

It was the first home win for the Wildcats (5-2, 2-2) over Oklahoma since 1996, and just their fourth win ever over a top-five team. It also snapped the Sooners’ nation-leading 22-game road win streak — a span of five years and 22 days since their loss at TCU.

Skylar Thompson had 213 yards passing while running for four touchdowns, and James Gilbert added 105 yards rushing and a score.

“I don’t have any idea on the lines and spreads, thank God,” said Wildcats coach Chris Klieman, whose team was a 21-½-point underdog. “I mean, yeah, it was a statement win for our guys. I told the seniors, ‘How many more opportunities are you going to have to play in front of your home crowd?'”

It was the third consecutive week a top-10 team lost to an unranked foe, with Oklahoma joining Georgia and Wisconsin.

“We’ve got to be more appreciative, cherish every moment and attack every moment with the right intent,” Hurts said. “We’ve got to learn from this and appreciate this lesson.”

Hurts threw for 395 yards and a touchdown while running for 95 yards and three more. But despite his big game, the Sooners couldn’t overcome a multitude of mistakes: two turnovers, costly penalties and the ejection of one of their defensive leaders.

Last week, it was the Sooner Schooner that crashed.

This week, it may have been Oklahoma’s chances of reaching the College Football Playoff.

It didn’t look that way early, though. The Sooners breezed downfield for a field goal, forced a quick punt, then scored again in a matter of minutes to take a 10-0 lead. And after Kansas State scored, Hurts answered with another touchdown to give the Sooners a 17-7 lead.

That’s when the unraveling began.

In the first half alone, Oklahoma twice fumbled the ball or dropped a snap. Penalties on third-and-long on each of the Wildcats’ first two scoring drives gave them first downs. The most egregious error came on a wide receiver pass in the final minute, when Nick Basquine’s throw bounced off Charleston Rambo and into the hands of A.J. Parker to set up the Wildcats’ third touchdown of the first half.

“That was a huge play,” Parker said.

That deficit swelled during the third quarter.

Kansas State marched for a field goal to open the half. Then, after a pooch kick, Eric Gallon forced a fumble on the return — and sustained a severe knee injury requiring a cart to take him from the field — that the Wildcats recovered to set up another touchdown run.

When they forced a three-and-out and scored again, they had built a 41-23 lead.

Oklahoma tried to rally in the fourth quarter, getting a 70-yard score from CeeDee Lamb, rolling downfield for Hurts’ third TD run and a 2-point conversion, then getting a field goal from Gabe Brkic to draw within one possession with 1:45 to go.

Then came the onside kick, the review — and the celebration in Aggieville.

“The guys just continued to believe throughout the game,” Klieman said. “I saw a sideline full of guys who really felt they had a chance to win this football game.”

THE TAKEAWAY

Oklahoma: The Sooners could still reach the playoffs by winning out and getting some help, but the task become much more challenging. And the road doesn’t get any easier with games against No. 23 Iowa State and No. 14 Baylor.

Kansas State: The Wildcats have won back-to-back Big 12 games after dropping their first two, and they gave Klieman a signature win as he tries to build on longtime coach Bill Snyder’s success.

KICKING AWAY

Oklahoma cornerback Parnell Motley was ejected early in the second quarter when he kicked Kansas State tight end Logan Long along the Sooners’ sideline. It came after Youngblood’s touchdown run trimmed the Wildcats’ deficit to 17-14 and occurred right in front of an official.

Penalty kick goal seals FHSU men’s soccer 10th victory of the season

HAYS, Kan. – Notching their 10th win of the season, FHSU Men’s Soccer defeated the Ouachita Baptist Tigers on Saturday, 1-0.

In their first meeting of the 2019 campaign, the two sides played to a 2-2 draw. In what almost looked like it could have been a similar result, Fort Hays State clocked in the sole goal of the match with five minutes remaining in the contest.

On a cross trying to be sent from one edge of the 18-yard box to the other, the ball clipped the hand of a Ouachita Baptist defender. Simultaneously, while hands raised for an appeal from Fort Hays State for a penalty kick, the referee pointed to the spot.

Stepping up to take charge was junior captain, Moritz Walther. The skipper began his run-up and fired the ball into the back of the net, sending Ouachita Baptist goalkeeper Matt Day diving in the opposite direction and remaining perfect in PK conversions (3-3).

Despite only one goal being scored in the match, the Black and Gold applied ruthless pressure on their oppositions defense – tripling the amount of shot attempts as the visitors (18-6). Forward Santiago Agudelo, who currently ranks among the top five in Division II in shots per game, contributed eight shots of his own.

In the ninth start of his senior season, Cullen Fisch completed his third clean sheet being needed for four saves.

With just three games left to play and now on 28 points, FHSU is locked in to the top two spots in the Great American Conference. Harding, who fell victim to the Fort Hays State comeback on Thursday night, holds the second spot with 22 points. One more victory would crown the Tigers as GAC regular season champions in their inaugural season.

FHSU travels to Wichita, Kan. on Saturday (Nov. 2) to face off against Newman. In their last meeting, the Tigers tallied four goals in a clean sheet victory.
