Monarchs sweep Hill City to open MCL play

The TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams each got back to .500 on the season and opened play in the Mid-Continent League with a pair of wins Friday over the Ringnecks in Hill City.

Girls: TMP 39, Hill City 28

It took the Monarch girls a while to find their offense Friday as they trailed much of the first half in a low scoring affair.

Down by seven, at 18-11 to start the third quarter the Monarchs offense and their pressure defense came alive going on a 14-2 third quarter run to take a 25-20 lead. Emily Schippers scored seven of her team-high 13 points during that stretch run.

The Monarchs held Hill City to just four third quarter points and took a 31-22 lead into the fourth quarter on their way to the 39-28 win.

TMP forced Hill City into 26 turnovers, 23 of them came after the first quarter.

Schippers led all scorers with 13 and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Hill City’s Leah Lindenmen had eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Monarchs improved to 2-2 while Hill City falls to 0-2.

FHSU women’s basketball inks two

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State head women’s basketball coach Tony Hobson has announced the signing of a pair of student-athletes for the 2019-20 season. Allison McFarren and Lauryn Reither will both join the Tiger family as true freshmen in the fall of 2019.

Allison McFarren | 5-5 | Point Guard
Wichita, Kan. | Bishop Carroll Catholic High School

Allison McFarren comes to Hays via Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Wichita. The point guard earned first team Class 5A All-State honors as a junior in 2018 from both the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association as well as Sports in Kansas. McFarren has helped Golden Eagles to three straight sub-state titles, finishing runner-up at the State Championships in 2018 after a third-place finish in 2016. She was named first team Greater Wichita Athletic League All-City as a junior after picking up honorable mention status as a sophomore. McFarren averaged 10 points, four rebounds and four assists per game as a junior.

“Allison is a quick, hard-nosed point guard that also has the ability to play the wing position,” said Hobson.” While she is a capable scorer, her on-ball defense and high energy stand out as her strengths. She is also an outstanding student and plans to major in pre-med.”

Lauryn Reither | 5-5 | Point Guard
Oklahoma City, Okla. | Putnam City High School

Lauryn Reither joins the Tigers after a decorated career at Putnam City High School outside Oklahoma City. A point guard, Reither averaged more than 20 points a game while totaling 2.7 steals, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists each night. She twice earned first team All-Conference honors while being listed on the VYPE Top 100 list as a sophomore and a junior. Reither was named to The Oklahoman’s Big All-City roster twice as an honorable mention selection.

“Lauryn is a slick ball-handling point guard,” said Hobson. “She has a knack for getting to the basket and is an excellent passer. Her ability to hit the three makes her an excellent combo guard able to play multiple positions.”

Chiefs sign former Bills WR Benjamin through end of season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs signed wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to a one-year contract, taking a low-risk gamble that they can become the team that finally allows the 2014 first-round draft pick to live up to expectations.

The Chiefs announced the deal Friday, one day after Benjamin was invited for a visit. They released defensive end Jarvis Jenkins to create space for him on the roster.

The 27-year-old Benjamin was waived by Buffalo earlier this week, ending a disappointing 13 months with the Bills. He had just 23 catches for 354 yards and one touchdown while getting knocked for having one of the highest drop rates in the NFL this season.

Benjamin, who began his career in Carolina, gives the Chiefs some depth for the stretch run. Sammy Watkins has been bothered by a foot injury and his status going forward remains uncertain.

Moran honors Coach Bill Snyder on Senate floor

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., spoke on the Senate floor to celebrate Coach Bill Snyder’s career as Kansas State University’s head football coach, and honored his impact on K-State, the city of Manhattan and Kansas.

Snyder recently announced his retirement after 27 seasons at the helm of K-State’s football program.

Chris Owings, Royals agree to $3M, 1-year contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chris Owings has agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals, five days after the utilityman was cut loose by Arizona.

Owings can earn an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses as part of the deal announced Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Owings hit .206 in 106 games this year. He made 33 starts in right field, 10 in center, nine at third, eight and second and three in left. He had 12 homers and 51 RBIs in 2017.

Owings had a $3.4 million salary this year, was eligible for salary arbitration and likely would have received a raise. But the Diamondbacks failed to offer a 2019 contract by last Friday’s deadline.

He is eligible for free agency after the 2019 season.

Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders hurt

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders was helped off the practice field Wednesday after crumpling to the ground on a pass play and grabbing his left ankle.

Sanders, who became the Broncos’ No. 1 receiver with the trade of Demaryius Thomas to the Houston Texans last month, missed four games last season with a right ankle injury.

Sanders leads the Broncos (6-6) with 71 catches for 868 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also run for a touchdown and thrown for a touchdown.

The Broncos have lost several starters to injuries, including star cornerback Chris Harris Jr. (fractured fibula) last weekend. He avoided going on IR, however, unlike offensive linemen Matt Paradis, Ronald Leary and Max Garcia and tight ends Jake Butt, Jeff Heuerman and Troy Fumagalli.

FHSU men’s soccer finishes No. 4 in final United Soccer Coaches Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team completed the 2018 season ranked at No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Poll. The Tigers finished at No. 4, their highest ranking in the poll in team history (previous high was No. 9, 9/25/12).

Fort Hays State earned their first trip to the National Semifinals in team history, earning a draw with Barry (Fla.) in regulation and both overtime periods. The Tigers fell to the Buccaneers on penalty kicks, 5-4, ending their season 17-2-2 overall. FHSU’s 17 victories topped the program record for wins in a season.

FHSU enjoyed 12 All-MIAA selections which included Santiago Agudelo, Abdoulaye Cisse, Raul Fierro, Tobias Patino, Fernando Pina, Luis Torres, Moritz Walther, Arsenio Chamorro, Rogelio Lopez, Alonso Rodriguez, Sergio Villalba and Caesar Jones. Agudelo was named MIAA Player of the Year, Lopez was named MIAA Freshman of the Year and head coach Brett Parker was named Coach of the Year.

Eight of those all-conference selections earned D2CCA All-Central Region nods, which included Agudelo, Torres, Pina, Cisse, Patino, Walther, Fierro and Villalba. Agudelo was named Central Region Player of the Year.

Five of those players earned United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region honors; Agudelo, Fierro, Patino, Pina and Torres.

Three of those all-region selections earned D2CCA All-America Honors. Agudelo earned First-Team honors at Forward, Torres earned Second-Team honors at Defender and Pina earned Third-Team honors at Goalkeeper. Agudelo was named D2CCA National Player of the Year.

Fort Hays State has now made seven-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament after the program has existed only eight years. Head Coach Brett Parker has an overall record of 100-40-17 guiding the program all eight years.
