FHSU women’s basketball continues rise in national polls

dominating 106-45 victory over Missouri Valley last weekend was enough to convince voters to slide the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team up in both national polls, released Tuesday (Dec. 4). The Tigers are now ranked ninth in the WBCA Coaches Poll and sixth in the D2SIDA Media Poll, up one spot in the coaches ranking and two slots in the media rendition from a week ago.

Additionally, the Tigers are in sole possession of first place in the weekly D2SIDA Central Region Rankings after being tied for first a week ago. FHSU received four of the five first place votes, with the final top selection going to 2nd-ranked Central Missouri.

The Tigers are one of four MIAA programs listed in the top 25 this week, joined in the coaches rankings by No. 7 Central Missouri, No. 23 Central Oklahoma and No. 24 Emporia State. The media poll lists Central Missouri eighth and Central Oklahoma 15th.

Fort Hays State is one of 19 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division II, including three in the MIAA (Central Oklahoma and Lincoln). The Tigers lead the nation in turnovers per game, giving the ball up just 10.2 times per night, while ranking second in turnover margin (plus-12.17) and assist/turnover ratio (1.52).

The Tigers are 1-1 all-time as the ninth-ranked team in the WBCA poll, with both games coming on the road. FHSU will play inside Gross Memorial Coliseum for the first time ever as the ninth-ranked team in the country Tuesday, December 4 against Nebraska-Kearney and Saturday, December 8 against No. 24 Emporia State.

Les Miles brings Auburn offensive coordinator to Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is leaving Auburn to take the same job at Kansas.

Kansas announced Tuesday that new coach Les Miles named Lindsey to his staff. Lindsey has been Auburn’s offensive coordinator for the last two seasons.

Miles said in a news release that Lindsey has a proven record of coaching “electric” offenses and a strong reputation for developing his players.

In 2017, Lindsey’s Auburn offense was just the eighth in SEC history to rush and pass for 3,000 yards. He also has been offensive coordinator at Southern Miss (2014-15) and Arizona State (2016).

Lindsey previously was an offensive analyst at Auburn in 2013 and quarterbacks coach at Troy in 2010.

Miles announced Sunday that he hired Chevis Jackson as defensive backs coach.

Delton leaving Kansas State

Hays native and current Kansas State quarterback Alex Delton is leaving the Wildcat program.

In a post on Twitter Tuesday, Delton announced that he will use his graduate transfer option and leave Kansas State at the end of the semester.

Delton said in part, “I’ve prayed countless times and spoke with those close to me, and I have decided to utilize my graduate transfer option from Kansas State University. I graduate this semester and will be at a new university in January.”

Delton played in seven game this past season and completed 44-of-80 pass attempts for 554 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also ran for 234 yards and two touchdowns this past season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – United Soccer Coaches released its Region Coaching Staffs of the Year for the 2018 season. Fort Hays State is the recipient for men’s soccer in the Central Region. Head coach Brett Parker adds another honor to his collection this season after earning MIAA Coach of the Year, while assistants Jordan Melia and Luca Anelli earn recognition as assistant coaches on staff at FHSU.

Fierro and Rodriguez earn All-Tournament honors at NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Fort Hays State Men’s Soccer had two players named to the All-Tournament Team for the NCAA Division II Championships following completion of the tournament this past weekend. Raul Fierro, senior defender, and Alonso Rodriguez, freshman forward, earned the honors.

Fierro had a great senior season as a defender with the Tigers. He earned All-MIAA First Team honors this year and was a two-time All-MIAA selection overall. He was also an All-Central Region Team selection by both the United Soccer Coaches Association and D2CCA this year. Fierro helped the Tigers play to a scoreless tie with Barry University (Fla.) in the national semifinal match before an eight-round penalty kick shootout eliminated the Tigers.

Rodriguez provided a late-season surge in offense for the Tigers after the national leader in scoring, Santiago Agudelo, went down with an injury in the Central Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament. Rodriguez was the spark that kept the Tigers alive in their quest to the NCAA Championships in Pittsburgh as he scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals in a 3-1 win over Northeastern State. In the national semifinal match against Barry, he led the team in shots on goal with three.

Fort Hays State finished its 2018 season at 17-2-2 overall, setting a new program record for wins in a season. The Tigers finished the season on a 16-match unbeaten streak, bookended by a pair of ties. FHSU entered the national semifinal match on a 14-match win streak.

Kansas sweeps Big 12 weekly honors

IRVING, Texas – Kansas senior Lagerald Vick and redshirt junior Dedric Lawson came up big in the Jayhawks’ overtime win against Stanford on Dec. 1 and have been rewarded for their efforts. Vick has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, while Lawson is the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week in a vote by a media panel which covers the conference, the league announced Monday.

In KU’s 90-84 overtime win against Stanford Dec. 1, Vick scored 19 of his 27 points in the final 7:30 of regulation and overtime. The Memphis guard made a 3-pointer with just under seven seconds remaining to send the game into the extra period. Vick then scored KU’s first eight points in OT. His seven 3-pointers marked the third time this season he has made seven or more treys.

Lawson tallied his third-straight and fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 15 rebounds against the Cardinal. The Memphis forward was 10-for-11 from the free throw line and his 15 rebounds marked a season high. Lawson has now scored 24 or more points in three-straight games and 20-plus four times this season.

Through games of Dec. 2, Vick leads the Big 12 in scoring at 20.8 points per game. He also leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage at 59.6 and in 3-pointers made per game at 4.7. Lawson is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double. He leads the conference in rebounds at 11.2 per game and his 18.8 scoring average is fifth in the league.

Kansas is 4-for-4 in Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season with Vick and Lawson each being named twice. This is the second time KU has swept the weekly honors in 2018-19 as Lawson was the player and freshman guard Quentin Grimes the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 12. Additionally, this is the second time in the 23-year history of the Big 12 that Kansas has swept the weekly honor twice in one season with the other in 2013-14.

Mahomes throws 4 TDs to lead Chiefs past Raiders

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdown passes Sunday to join Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as the only QBs to reach the 40 TD mark through 12 games. The Kansas City Chiefs won their first game since releasing star running back Kareem Hunt, 40-33 over the Oakland Raiders.

The Chiefs (10-2) cut ties with Hunt after a months-old video surfaced on TMZ on Friday, showing him shoving and kicking a woman. No charges have been filed in the case from February, but the Chiefs let Hunt go because he misled them about the incident .

Spencer Ware replaced Hunt as starter and scored on a direct snap on fourth-and-goal from the 1 in the third quarter. Mahomes did most of the rest of the damage against the Raiders (2-10) with his arm.

He connected on two short touchdown passes to Travis Kelce in the first half, then found another tight end, Demetrius Harris, on a 13-yard pass late in the third quarter one play after an apparent TD to Kelce was called off by a replay review.

Mahomes finished 23 for 38 for 295 yards and engineered a late TD drive capped by a 2-yard pass to Chris Conley after Oakland cut the deficit to three.

Oakland added a late field goal, but the Chiefs recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

Mahomes has 41 TD passes on the season, joining Manning (44 in 2004, 41 in ’13) and Brady (41 in 2007) as the only QBs with at least 40 in the first 12 games of a season.

Kelce had 12 catches for 168 yards, topping the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight season.

Derek Carr threw three TD passes for the Raiders, but Oakland lost three fumbles that led to three scores for the Chiefs and reached double-digit losses for the 12th time in 16 seasons.

QUICK STRIKE

The Raiders got on the board on Doug Martin’s 1-yard run to cut Kansas City’s lead to 13-7. But Mahomes needed just 57 yards to drive the length of the field. Demarcus Robinson had a 38-yard catch and raced across the entire width of the field to get out of bounds with 12 seconds left and the Chiefs having no timeouts.

Mahomes then found Kelce for his second TD of the game on the next play. Arden Key blocked the extra point to keep the score 19-7.

SCUFFLE

Oakland’s Jared Cook and Kansas City’s Eric Murray got into a scuffle late in the first half when they were jostling near the sideline well after the play. Both players were called for unsportsmanlike conduct on the play.

GIVE IT AWAY

The Chiefs got off to a rough start when Kelce lost a fumble on the opening play from scrimmage. It didn’t hurt the Chiefs, who got the ball back when the Raiders were unable to get a first down and punted after Rodney Hudson was called for a hold on a fourth-down run.

Martin and DeAndre Washington then lost fumbles for Oakland in the first half, leading to field goals for Harrison Butker. Oakland’s other halfback, Jalen Richard, lost a fumble in the third quarter that led to a TD for the Chiefs.
