COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team opens the 2018-19 season ranked 22nd in the D2SIDA Media Poll, released Tuesday. This is the second time the Tigers have been recognized in the preseason version of the media rankings, now in its fifth year (10th, 2015-16). The poll is comprised of ballots from 16 Division II sports information directors, two from each region.

The Tigers are one of two MIAA teams represented in the poll, joining top-ranked Central Missouri. Central region foe Southwestern Oklahoma State, the team the Tigers defeated in the opening round of the NCAA Central Regional a year ago, opens the year ranked 13th.

Fort Hays State returns 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad that won 26 games, third-most in program history. Included in that group of returners are four All-MIAA performers in Tatyana Legette, Carly Heim, Kacey Kennett and Lanie Page.

The D2SIDA weekly poll is comprised of a regional poll, released every Monday, and a national poll, released on Tuesdays. The Tigers are third in the initial Central Region poll behind UCM and SWOSU.

Fort Hays State has one more preseason tune-up Thursday (Nov. 1) against Kansas State before opening the regular season in Hays against Southwest Minnesota State on November 9.

Thomas More Prep-Marian announces new baseball coach

Breit
TMP-M

Thomas More Prep-Marian announced Tuesday that Aaron Breit, a 2004 graduate of TMP-M, has accepted the position of head high school baseball coach. He begins his role as the team prepares for the 2018-19 Season.

Breit has coached with Dusty Washburn for several seasons at TMP-Marian.

“He is the brightest baseball mind I know,” Washburn stated when asked about his successor. “My decision to leave was a difficult one and knowing that the program would be in good hands helped me decide to go to FHSU.”

In addition, Washburn added that he is looking forward to the level of play and recruiting aspects that FHSU has to offer. TMP-Marian and Troy Schulte, activities director, thanked Washburn for his time and dedication to the baseball program.

“Dusty did a great job leading the program the past two years, and I wish him the best of luck as he looks to join the FHSU baseball program,” Schulte said.

Breit said he is excited to keep the program moving forward.

When asked about his philosophy he said, “I want to make sure the players stay fundamentally sound in their faith and in life.”

“Coach Breit has been a tremendous asset to the TMP-Marian Baseball Program the past couple of years as an associate head coach and I believe he will provide a seamless transition in taking over as the head coach,” Schulte said. “Coach Breit has great knowledge of the game and more importantly is an outstanding role model for our male athletes.”

Breit lives in Hays with his wife, Jami, and their children — Connor, a fifth grader at Holy Family Elementary; Cy, a preschooler at HFE; and Reed, a future Monarch.

Fort Hays State faces its biggest test of the season this week in a game with big implications on the region rankings. Northwest Missouri State continues to lead the MIAA standings at 8-1, but Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State each sit just one game back. Fort Hays State plays Northeastern State in the final week of the season. The Tigers are looking to pull the Bearcats back into a tie for first with a week to play.

Pittsburg State moved up one spot this week to No. 8 in the rankings, while Harding slid down to No. 9. Missouri S&T jumps in this week at No. 10, replacing Saginaw Valley State.

The game this week at Northwest Missouri State will be available to view on several local television channels, while also available on several digital platforms. Look for a release on fhsuathletics.com soon for the television providers and channels carrying the game.

FAYETTE, Iowa – The Fort Hays State wrestling team has been ranked 17th in the 2018-19 NCAA DII Wrestling Coaches Association Preseason Top 25, released Monday (Oct. 29) by the organization. The poll consists of top 12 rankings of all ten weight classes, with each sport earning a set number of points for the team.

Sophomore Efe Osaghae sits in fifth in the initial rankings at 157 pounds. Osaghae earned a trip to the NCAA Championships in 2017, while finishing eighth and earning All-America Honors. Ball leads the MIAA in his weight class, as Osaghae sits in third in the conference at 157 pounds.

Fort Hays State is third among MIAA programs in the preseason poll, with Nebraska-Kearney opening the year ranked No. 2 and Lindenwood sits at No. 12. FHSU Tigers Post Game Interview

Lanie Page hit 4-of-8 from 3-point range and led the Tigers with 21 points. Her three early in the fourth quarter sparked an 11-2 run after the Jayhawks had built a nine-point lead.

Rolfs, who hit 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points, capped the run with three that rimmed in to tie the game at 63-all.

Chiefs complete season sweep of Broncos with 30-23 victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes had another 300-yard passing day with four touchdowns. Kareem Hunt had another hurdling, tackle-breaking touchdown that gave the Chiefs a lead they’d never surrender.

Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins produced huge games, too, as the high-powered Kansas City offense once again made the incredible look downright casual in a 30-23 victory over Denver on Sunday that finished off a season sweep of the Broncos.

“When we’re clicking and spreading the all around,” Mahomes said, “we’re really tough to stop.”

You could make a case for nearly impossible. The only team to beat the Chiefs (7-1) so far has been New England, and it took the Patriots scoring 43 points at home to win by a field goal.

The Broncos (3-5) never came that close Sunday.

Mahomes finished with 303 yards passing for his franchise-record seventh consecutive 300-yard performance. Watkins had 107 yards and two of the TD catches, and Kelce and Hunt had the other two, as the Chiefs won for the 19th time in their past 21 games against the AFC West rivals.

“There were some good individual efforts there,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, rattling off most of those same names before adding, almost as an afterthought: “Obviously our young quarterback was involved, too.”

Obviously.

Case Keenum had 262 yards passing and two scores for the Broncos (3-5), while Phillip Lindsay had a big day in his first career start. The undrafted rookie had 95 yards rushing and a TD while catching three passes and providing a spark out of the backfield.

Still, that production couldn’t help the Broncos overcome their own sloppiness. They were flagged 10 times for 83 yards, several of the penalties wiping out big gains — and that doesn’t include a few that were declined or offsetting, including a personal foul on defensive tackle Derek Wolfe.

“We can’t beat ourselves against this team. We know that,” said Broncos cornerback Chris Harris, whose team has lost seven straight to the Chiefs. “We got to be smart and we didn’t play smart enough here. We got to figure it out, why we keep having these same things happen every week.”

Kansas City failed to score on its initial drive for the first time all season, and instead it was the Broncos jumping in front when Lindsay scored from a yard out midway through the first quarter.

The Chiefs quickly found their stride, though.

Harrison Butker hit a chip-shot field goal, Kelce made a tough touchdown catch in traffic and Watkins found the soft spot in the middle of the Denver defense to haul in his first TD grab. Denver had no answer until the closing seconds, when Tim Patrick had his first career touchdown catch.

Still, the Chiefs took a 16-14 lead into the locker room. And they weren’t done.

Watkins, signed in the offseason to take some pressure off Tyreek Hill, showed his own game-breaking ability early in the third quarter. He had a 24-yard reception to move Kansas City downfield, and his 10-yard strike from Mahomes added to the Chiefs’ cushion .

The Broncos, meanwhile, kept stumbling through costly miscues. Two more penalties on their first possession of the half resulted in a shanked punt that gave Kansas City prime field position, and it took just four plays for Hunt to reach the end zone for the 10th time this season.

The reigning NFL rushing champion took an inside pitch from Mahomes — a pass, technically — and ran through two tackles, hurdled Will Parks and dragged fellow safety Justin Simmons into the end zone.

The highlight-reel catch-and-run came after another hurdling run by Hunt a week ago.

Denver tried to come back in the fourth quarter, when Jeff Heuerman caught a fourth-down touchdown catch. But the Broncos failed to convert the 2-point conversion, then Keenum threw a pick after they’d managed to get the ball back, foiling their best chance to make it a game.

“It is disappointing, but you got to go back to work on Sundays,” Lindsay said. “It’s time to get us a win. What better way than to go back home and get a win against the Texans?”

STATS AND STREAKS

Denver has lost four of five. … Reid won his 201st game, tying Dan Reeves for eighth-most in NFL history. … Butker had a streak of 61 consecutive PATs snapped in the first half.

INJURIES

Broncos: The Broncos were missing RB Royce Freeman (ankle), RT Jared Veldheer (knee) and strong safety Darian Stewart (neck). LBs Brandon Marshall (knee) and Von Miller (ankle) were active.

Chiefs: WR Tyreek Hill appeared to tweak his groin on a long catch early in the game. He left late in the fourth quarter. … LBs Anthony Hitchens (ribs) and Frank Zombo (hamstring) also left late.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Hill showed up at Arrowhead Stadium wearing an inflatable sumo wrestler suit. That came after Mahomes posted video of himself on social media this week wearing a Tyrannosaurus Rex outfit while playing a pingpong game with practice squad wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, who also wore a sumo suit.

UP NEXT

Broncos: Return home to face Houston next Sunday.

Chiefs: Head to Cleveland next Sunday.

Gaspar Alvarez and Jose de Gregorio fed the ball ahead to Johannes Brendle for his fourth score of the year. At the 70:53 mark, FHSU held a slim 2-1 advantage over Lindenwood.

After each team fired off another shot, Santiago Agudelo added an insurance goal for the black & gold in the 79th minute. Moritz Walther found Agudelo after intercepting a pass between two Lions defenders and then Agudelo capitalized on his team-leading 26th goal to put the Tigers up 3-1 for good.

Fernando Pina earned the victory in goal for FHSU to improve to 8-0-1 for the season. Pina faced eight shots throughout the match and recorded four saves. Agudelo led all Tigers with two goals, six shots and four shots on frame in 90 minutes of play. Cisse produced three shots, with two coming on goal.
