Tiger women’s soccer secures first-round home game in MIAA Tournament with win over Washburn

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State locked up a first-round home match in the MIAA Tournament on Sunday (Oct. 28) with a 1-0 win over Washburn. The Tigers closed out the regular season at 10-6-2 overall, 8-3 in the MIAA, while Washburn moved to 7-9-2 overall and 3-6-2 in the MIAA.

A header goal by Olympia Katsouridis in the 83rd minute off a nice crossing pass from Cailey Perkins was all the Tigers needed for the victory. Nikita Woods also earned a helper on the play by passing ahead to Perkins before she sent in the crossing pass.

Shots were tough to come by throughout the afternoon with FHSU holding just an 8-6 advantage. The Tigers outshot the Ichabods by just one in each half, 3-2 in the first half and 5-4 in the second. Katsouridis and Perkins led the Tigers in shots with two each.

Deonna Wellbrock moved to 2-1 on the season in goal by earning a three-save shutout. Bailee Russell took the loss for Washburn, moving to 1-5-1 on the year.

The official MIAA Women’s Soccer Tournament bracket will come out soon, but the Tigers finished conference regular season play in a third-place tie with Emporia State. The Tigers will host an opening round game on Wednesday evening (Oct. 31) in Hays. Opponent and game time will be announced when the MIAA releases the official tournament bracket.

Tigers hold off Lindenwood, Brown becomes FHSU winningest coach

HAYS, Kan. – Chance Fuller completed 13 of 18 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown to lead Fort Hays State to a 27-14 win over Lindenwood in front of 3,527 Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. The win improves to Tiger to 7-2 and is the 56th in eight years for head coach Chris Brown, the most by any coach in FHSU history.

Fuller played most of the second half after Jacob Mezera was sacked on the Tigers first offensive possession of the third quarter and didn’t return. Fuller’s 46-yard touchdown pass to running back D.J. Hickman with 2:05 to play in the third quarter closed out the scoring.

Game Highlights

Dandre Reed returned the opening kickoff 49 yards to the Lindenwood 43. Four plays later Harley Hazlett hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Mezera to give FHSU a 7-0 lead.

Fuller and Layne Bieberle connected passes of 20 and 36 yards to set up a 28-yard Dante Brown field goal to give the Tigers a 10-7 lead with 1:47 left in the opening quarter.

Fuller later found Andrew Jay on a 56-yard strike which set up a one-yard Charles Tigner touchdown run to push the lead to 17-7 with just three minutes left in the first half.

Following a three-and-out by Lindenwood, the Tigers drove 33 yards in seven plays and used a 34-yard Brown field goal for a 20-7 halftime lead.

The Lions (3-6) scored on their first possession of the third quarter but would go three and out and miss on a field goal on their next four possessions.

The Tigers sacked Lindenwood quarterback Cade Brister fourird down times, three of them on third down in the second half.

Layne Bieberle hauled in a six catches for 122 yards, his seventh career 100-yard game tying him with O.J. Murdock for the third most in FHSU history.

Harley Hazlett had nine catches for 93 yards. Tigner led the running attack with 36 yards on 14 carries.

Connor Shedeed and Kolt Trachsel both had 11 tackles with Trachsel registering two sacks.

The Tigers remain tied with Pittsburg State in second place in the MIAA, one game behind Northwest Missouri State. FHSU plays the Bearcats in Maryville Saturday.

Bender’s TD tosses, late TCU fumble gives Kansas win

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — One of the few bright spots all season for Kansas has been its ability to force turnovers, doing so at such a high rate that the Jayhawks have the Big 12’s best turnover differential.

They produced another one at a crucial juncture against TCU on Saturday.

It gave them their biggest bright spot, too.

Peyton Bender threw two touchdown passes to Pooka Williams, the Kansas defense hopped on a fumble at its own 6-yard line with 58 seconds left and the Jayhawks held on to beat the Horned Frogs 27-26 to end a four-game losing streak and give their embattled coach just his second Big 12 win.

“They certainly were there and could have easily won that game,” Jayhawks coach David Beaty said, “but our guys persevered and I’m extremely proud of them. Guys deserve to have some success.”

The Jayhawks (3-5, 1-4) took the lead on Williams’ touchdown grab with 6:13 to go, but TCU (3-5, 1-4) and first-time starter Michael Collins breezed downfield in an attempt to answer it.

Collins converted a third-down pass to give the Horned Frogs first-and-goal at the 9-yard line, and Darius Anderson got the ensuing carry. But the ball popped out when he hit his own lineman and the Jayhawks clearly recovered, even though the officials initially called Anderson down.

The replay gave Kansas the ball. And after Bender took a safety to drain all but one second from the clock, the Jayhawks covered the ensuing squib kick to seal the win.

“Listen, gentlemen, we’ve been here before. I said before the season, we were young,” TCU coach Gary Patterson said. “But the bottom line is, we’re going to keep fighting. We’re going to keep getting better so we can move forward. … If we do that, then we’ll have a chance.”

Bender finished with 249 yards passing and Williams had 102 yards receiving in giving the Jayhawks just their second Big 12 victory under embattled coach David Beaty. It also was the first against the Horned Frogs since 1997, long before the schools became Big 12 rivals.

“It’s awesome for everybody, all the stuff we’ve gone through, all the stuff that’s been said, all the naysayers,” Jayhawks linebacker Joe Dineen Jr. said. “It’s nice to get a win.”

Collins had 351 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception, and Jalen Reagor had eight catches for 177 yards, as TCU lost its third straight and fifth in six games.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have been surprising that the Horned Frogs and Jayhawks played a back-and-forth game that went down to the wire. Even though TCU had won all six conference meetings, five had been decided by two touchdowns or fewer.

Kansas struck first by marching 75 yards for a touchdown, but the Horned Frogs’ defense stiffened the rest of the half, allowing just 14 yards the rest of the way.

The TCU offense struggled to capitalize, though, and it took a long touchdown pass to Reagor just before halftime to give the Horned Frogs a 10-7 lead at the break.

Both offenses finally found a rhythm in the second half.

Williams caught his first touchdown pass to give Kansas the lead, then Collins scored his first TD to give the Horned Frogs the lead back. Gabriel Rui added a pair of field goals for the Jayhawks, and TCU answered with a 75-yard drive that Collins capped with another short scoring run.

Kansas pulled ahead once more on its ensuing drive, when Bender converted a pair of third downs and then found Williams in the flat. He made a devastating cutback and went 28 yards for a score, which was upheld after it appeared that the freshman running back fumbled right at the goal line.

Another replay went the Jayhawks’ way at the other end of the field a few minutes later.

“Just a mistake I made,” Anderson said of his fumble. “Can’t get it back now.”

LAST PLAY

The Jayhawks had seven seconds to burn on fourth down at the end of the game, so Bender ran into his own end zone and chucked the ball out of bounds. But it hit a tarp before hitting the ground for a safety, and that left a single second on the clock — and forced a tense squib kick. “It was definitely a long second,” Bender said. “I wish I would have taken another one.”

THE TAKEAWAYS

TCU capped a miserable week in which top playmaker KaVontae Turpin was kicked off the team and quarterback Shawn Robinson was forced to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery with an on-field dud. Collins had a few positive moments, but the Horned Frogs’ defense struggled throughout.

Kansas may have a new coach next season — it already has a new athletic director — but its guys are still playing hard for Beaty, who is immensely popular in the locker room. Beaty called the plays for the second game after firing offensive coordinator Doug Meacham and the Jayhawks responded.

Kyler Murray lead No. 8 Oklahoma past Kansas State

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Kyler Murray passed for 352 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to help No. 8 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 51-14 on Saturday.

The Sooners (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) rolled up a season-high 702 total yards and only punted once, and that was in the fourth quarter after Murray was done for the day.

CeeDee Lamb caught four passes for a career-high 160 yards and two touchdowns, and Kennedy Brooks ran for 94 yards and two scores. The Sooners won their second straight since losing to Texas.

Oklahoma held Kansas State (3-4, 1-4) to 245 yards. Alex Barnes, who entered the game as the Big 12’s leading rusher, was limited to 28 yards on 13 carries.

“He’s been tremendous against everybody, so that’s, of all the stats in the game, that’s one of the ones that I know I’m most proud of,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said.

The Sooners gained 209 yards in the first quarter and took a 17-0 lead. Murray threw two touchdown passes in the period, including an 82-yard connection with Lamb.

Murray ran for a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter to push the lead to 31-7, and the Sooners were ahead 34-7 at the break. Murray completed 17 of 22 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 37 yards and another score in the first half.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas State: The Wildcats ran for 319 yards against Baylor and 291 yards against Oklahoma State in their previous two games. They found the going tough against the Sooners, a bit of a surprise against a Sooner team that had struggled at times against the run this season. Kansas State gained just 137 yards rushing on 32 carries.

Oklahoma: The Sooners put together their second consecutive solid defensive performance under interim defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill. The Sooners held TCU to three points in the second half of a 52-27 win last Saturday, then held Kansas State to seven points through three quarters.

“Our mentality is good,” Riley said. “We’re practicing really well. I think the coaches have done a good job putting it together. We’ve made some changes. We’re playing with some guys we weren’t playing with before and they’re playing well together as a group.”

POLL IMPLICATIONS

The Sooners might not move up much in the next poll, but they helped perception with a second consecutive dominant performance.

Monarchs rout Lyons in final game of the season

HAYS – TMP quarterback Carson Jacobs threw a season-high five touchdown passes and the Monarchs took advantage of four Lyons Lions turnovers in a 45-12 win Friday at Lewis Field.

The Monarchs took advantage of a pair of Lyons fumbles on their first two offensive drives and scored a pair of touchdowns to go up 16-0.

Jacobs found Jace Wentling for a 23-yard score that put TMP up 8-0 after the two-point conversion with 10:24 to play in the first. Then about two and a half minutes later, following the second Lyons fumble Kaleb Hagans scored from a yard out and after the two-point conversation the Monarchs led 16-0.

Lyons got their only offensive touchdown of the game on their next offensive possession on a 64-yard touchdown run from Ismael Reyes cutting the TMP lead to 16-6.

The Monarchs offense would continue its season-best performance adding three more second quarter touchdowns with Jacobs finding Wentling for a second time from 47 yards out, Jack Johnson from 15 yards out and Alex Schwartz for 32 yards.

The Monarchs lead 39-6 as the first half was coming to an end and attempted a field goal but a low snap forced Jacobs to try and throw for the first down but instead threw and interception to the Lions Trenton Troyer who scored on a 62-yard touchdown return to make the score 39-12 at halftime.

TMP added one more touchdown in the third quarter, this time Jacobs found Bryce Hickman for a 21-yard touchdown giving the Monarchs the 45-12 lead.

Hays High entered bracket play as the eleven seed and traveled to Kapaun Mt. Carmel the six seed.  The game played was played at Cessna Stadium were the Crusaders host their home games.

Hays took the first lead of the game on their second drive of the game.  Palmer Hutchison found Jaren Kanak on a 34 yard pass over the middle to set the Indians up at the two yard.  One play later Hayden Brown rushed in for a 6-0 lead after Hays missed the extra point.  Kapaun responded with 14 consecutive points.  One play after the Indians took the lead Columbia University commit Scott Valentas broke several backfield tackles and scored on a 72 yard run.  The extra point gave the Crusaders a 7-6 lead.

The second Crusader touchdown was set up by a long Valentas run then was capped when he ran in from two yards out for a 14-6 lead.  The Indians had outscored their opponents by 31 points in the second quarter this year entering Friday night.  Hays outscored Kapaun 15-7 in the second quarter to tie the game 21-21.

Hutchison found Kanak again but this time for a 59 yard score closing the gap down to 14-13.  The teams traded turnovers and Kapaun scored on a 35 yard pass to regain an eight point advantage, 21-13.  Hays drove right down the field on the next drive and Hutchison found Cole Schroeder for a 37 yard score on 4th and 11.  The touchdown was the first for Schroeder.  Hutchison converted a two point pass to Mason Ibarra for a 21-21 tie.

Tavian Creamer intercepted a pass on the next Kapaun drive and Hays had a chance at the end zone but the pass fell incomplete from 31 yards away.

Highlights

Kapaun scored on the first drive of the second half going through the air on four of their six plays before a quarterback run scored from 23 yards out.  Kapaun misfired the snap and a two point pass was broken up.  Hays regained the lead on the next series.  Hays converted on two third downs to get to the red zone.  Hays could not convert on third down from the eight and lined up for a field goal.  The Indians shifted to a play and junior varsity quarterback threw a touchdown to Trey Adams.  The extra point by Cole Schroeder gave Hays a 28-27 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Hays had been outscored in the fourth quarter by 37 on the season and the fourth quarter on Friday night was a problem.  Kapaun put 21 on the scoreboard and Hays never did score.  Kapaun scored on a fourth down pass from twelve yards out to take the lead for good at 35-28.  Hays drove to the Crusaders 45 but faced 4th and 12 and elected to punt.  Kapaun scored on the next series to take a two possession and scored one more time for a 48-28 victory.

The Indian’s season finishes at 3-6 while Kapaun moves on to 7-2 and will travel to Great Bend next week.

Agudelo’s two goals lift Tigers to victory over Peacocks

FAYETTE, Iowa – The No. 10 ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team defeated Upper Iowa on Friday (Oct. 26), 3-1. The Tigers improved to 13-2-1 overall and 7-0 in MIAA play, while the Peacocks dipped to 4-7-2 on the season and 2-4 in conference play.

The Tigers trailed for the just the fourth time at any point throughout the 2018 season as the Peacocks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the match after Italo Martins Soares found a hole in behind the Tiger defense and connected on his team-leading fifth score of the year.

Santiago Agudelo continued his stellar junior campaign with the equalizer in the 31st minute, plating his 23rd goal of the season with some help from the foot of Moises Peralta. Peralta picked up his third assist of the season in the process. The rest of the first period was stagnant as neither team could capitalize on their scoring opportunities.

In the 52nd minute, Abdoulaye Cisse fed the ball ahead to Alonso Rodriguez, who then knocked in his third goal of the season on a header near the right post that snuck past the Peacock goalkeeper.

The Tigers cashed in on an insurance goal in the late ticks of the contest as Agudelo recorded his 24th score and seventh multi-goal contest of the year from about ten yards out, blowing the ball past the Upper Iowa keeper.

Fernando Pina earned the victory in goal for Fort Hays State, improving his overall record to 6-0-1. Pina allowed his sixth goal of the season, his first goal allowed since a 2-1 victory over Lindenwood (Oct. 7). Santiago Agudelo led the way with eight shots in the match. Agudelo and Rodriguez each had four shots on frame.

The Tigers are back in action Sunday (Oct. 28) as they take on Lindenwood in the final regular season conference match for FHSU. The Tigers and Lions are slated to battle each other starting at 1:30 p.m. from St. Charles, Mo.

Katsouridis’ overtime goal propels FHSU women’s soccer to 2-1 win against Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. – With the regular season dwindling down, every game is becoming more crucial for the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team. In their first contest of the final weekend, the Tigers needed overtime against the Lopers but secured the 2-1 win in Kearney following an early goal from Olympia Katsouridis. The win improves FHSU to 9-6-2 and 7-3 in MIAA play, while the Lopers drop to 5-11-1 and a 3-6-1 conference mark.

Fort Hays State got on the board first as freshman Cailey Perkins captured her seventh goal of the season as she headed the ball in off an assist from Darby Hirsch in the 12th minute of play. FHSU held the 1-0 lead over UNK until Megan Merkel found fellow Loper Megan Cook inside the box after a rebounded shot to tie up the match at 1-1 in the 25th minute.

The 1-1 tie held steady for the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime between the two programs. In the previous meeting this season for UNK and FHSU, that contest also needed extra time before the Tigers claimed the 1-0 victory off a Hirsch goal.

It was a similar tale for the Tigers this match as well, as Katsouridis only needed 36 seconds in overtime to notch the game-winning goal. Katsouridis recorded her third goal of the year in a header off an assist from Nikita Woods just eight yards out. Fort Hays State stole the 2-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney.
UNK outshot Fort Hays State by a 12-9 margin with nine hitting on target compared to eight from the Tigers. Hirsch led all players with four shots on the day.

Megan Kneefel recorded the win in net for the Tigers as she documented eight saves in her 12 shots faced. Kneefel boosts her season record as anchor FHSU to 8-5-2 and increased her total saves to 72.

Fort Hays State has already clinched a spot in the conference tournament; however, it will come down to how Sunday’s matches around the conference shake out to determine if the Tigers will host or hit the road for their first round matchup.

The Tigers will host Washburn for their final regular season contest of the year on Sunday (Oct. 18) for Senior Day. The Ichabods and Tigers are set for first kick at 1 p.m. at FHSU Soccer Stadium.

FHSU volleyball comes up short at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team came up short in Friday’s match against Pittsburg State, falling in three sets (Oct. 26). The Tigers are now 8-19 on the year and 2-13 in MIAA play, while the Gorillas move to 18-10 overall and 7-8 in league competition.

After celebrating their senior class before the match, the Gorillas came out on fire, taking the first five points before cruising to a 25-12 victory in the opening set. Fort Hays State turned things around in the second frame, capturing seven of the first 10 points to lead by as many as four. The Tigers led as late as 9-8, but a 9-2 run by the home team put them in front for good. FHSU fought back within two (16-14) after a solo block from Tatum Bartels and an Amirah Bentley service ace, but the Gorillas finished strong to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room, 25-18.

A service ace from Bre Becker helped the Tigers open a back-and-forth third set with four consecutive points. The first of 10 ties in the set came at 5-5 in the midst of a big PSU run to thwart Fort Hays State’s early advantage. The game of runs returned to the Tigers, who scored four in a row again to retake the lead, 10-8. A kill from Azlyn Cassaday followed another Bartels solo block, tying things up at eight. A Gorilla error gave FHSU the lead before Madison Elwood and Bartels teamed up for a block to double the advantage.

After the teams traded points for several rallies, the Tigers put together five-straight points to jump in front 20-15. Multiple kills from Cassaday, a pair of PSU errors and an Abbie Hayes service ace handed the Tigers their largest lead of the match, prompting a Gorilla timeout. Pittsburg State came out of the huddle on a mission, finishing the sweep after an 11-4 run handed them a 26-24 victory.

Cassaday led the Tigers with 10 kills and 12 digs, posting her team-leading sixth double-double of the season. Amirah Bentley contributed 11 assists, eight digs, two kills and one service ace. Bartels totaled three blocks (two solo) to go along with one dig. The Tigers were limited to a .056 attack percentage, while the Gorillas posted a .212 swing rate.

The Tigers will wrap up the road portion of their regular season Saturday (Oct. 27) when they take on No. 14 Central Oklahoma at 4 p.m. in Edmond, Okla.
