Mistakes cost Monarchs in loss to Ellsworth

TMP committed four turnovers and Morgan Kelley accounted for four total touchdowns Friday as Ellsworth picked up a 48-0 win over the Monarchs.

The Monarchs opened the game with the ball and went three and out. The Bearcats took their first possession of the game and put together an 11-play 53-yard drive that was capped off by a six-yard Kelley touchdown run.

Kelley added a second touchdown, this one from 59 yards out to give Ellsworth a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Monarchs lone offensive bright spot came at the end of the first half when they manufactured a 14-play 72-yard drive to the Ellsworth two yard-line but a fumbled ended the drive and gave the Bearcats a 14-0 halftime lead.

Ellsworth’s Kash Travnichek opened the second-half with a kickoff return for a touchdown that put the Bearcasts up 20-0.

On the Monarchs next offensive possession, they fumbled on the very first play setting up the Bearcats with great field position. Luke Sharpe scored the first of his two second-half touchdowns four plays later to make it 27-0 Ellsworth.

The Bearcats added a pair of Kelley to Bransen Schulte touchdown passes down the stretch on their way to the 48-0 win.

Ellsworth amassed 404 yards of total offense in the win. Kelley finished 12-of-17 for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 77 yards and a pair of scores.

The Monarchs Carson Jacobs completed 6-of-12 passes for 102 yards.

TMP drops to 2-6 and finished 1-4 in the district. Ellsworth also moves to 2-6 and 1-4 in the district. Because Ellsworth hold the tie-breaker with the Monarchs they earned the fourth and final playoff spot in 2A district 8.

TMP finished sixth in the district and will travel to Ellinwood for week nine next week.

Hays falls at Salina Central

Hays High visited revamped Salina Stadium on Friday night to play the Central Mustangs.  Each team entered with week nine seeding implications on the line.

Hays opened the game on a ten play scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead after a eight yard run by Palmer Hutchison.  Salina Central then scored 28 consecutive points.  The Mustangs benefited by two interceptions scored on three touchdown passes from Jackson Kavanagh to Quinton Stewart.  Down 28-7 late in the second quarter, Hays did drive into Central territory but could not score.

Highlights

Salina Central scored on their first drive of the second half to extend their scoring streak to 36 consecutive points.  Hays responded with 14 straight, the second following a Central fumble.  The Indians recovered another fumble on the next play in Mustang territory but fumbled one play later at the 19.

Central controlled the remainder of the third and fourth quarter and take a 43-21 victory.

Coach Tony Crough

Hays finishes the first eight games of the year at 3-5.  Salina Central improves to 6-2 after losing 18 straight games entering 2018.

Strong first half helps Tiger women’s soccer to win over Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. – It took less than twenty minutes for the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team to take a commanding lead at Missouri Southern. After notching two early goals, the Tigers would hold on to their lead to capture the 2-0 road win over the Lions. With the victory, Fort Hays State improves to 7-6-2 and 5-3 in MIAA play. The loss drops Missouri Southern to 7-6-2 and a 3-4-1 conference mark.

The Tigers came out ready to play as they scored their first goal within the first six minutes of the match. Olympia Katsouridis achieved her second goal of the season at the 5:37 mark as the ball deflected off the goalkeeper, giving Cailey Perkins the assist. Just over ten minutes later, Darby Hirsch netted her fourth goal of the season at 16:43 in the first half. The two early goals gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage, which would remain for the first half.

In the second half, the Tigers controlled the tempo yet were unable to get on the board again, making the 2-0 lead from the first half the final. Fort Hays State and Missouri Southern were even on shots in the match with five each. The Tigers, however, attempted four shots on goal compared to just two hitting target for the Lions.

With just three contests now remaining in MIAA play, the Tigers are tied for fourth in the conference alongside Emporia State. Both teams are even at 5-3 in conference play and the Hornets have the advantage after their 3-2 win over Fort Hays State earlier in the season.

Megan Kneefel earned the win in goal for the Tigers as she improves her record to 6-5-2 overall. With her two saves on the night, Kneefel now owns 59 on the season. For the Lions, Luz Galindo takes the loss despite two saves of her own in the contest. Galindo drops her record on the season to 6-4-1.

Fort Hays State continues their road visits with a tilt at Southwest Baptist on Sunday (Oct. 21). That contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start in Bolivar.

No. 11 Washburn tops Tiger volleyball

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team stuck with 11th-ranked Washburn for much of the evening Friday, but the Ichabods found a way to pull away to win in straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-16. The Tigers dip to 8-17 on the year and 2-10 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods are now 23-1 overall and 11-1 in league action.

The Tigers fought tooth and nail with a high-powered Ichabod squad early on, splitting the first 32 rallies right down the middle, 16-16. Fort Hays State led by as many as two early on after a block from Azlyn Cassaday and Tatum Bartels, but the Ichabods soon clawed in front by four, 16-12. Two kills from Morgan West bookended a Bartels service ace, helping the Tigers close within one. A Washburn error on the following serve tied things up at 16 before the visitors went on a 9-1 run, closing out the set, 25-17.

Fort Hays State again jumped out to an early lead in the second set, going in front by two after a kill from Cassaday, 4-2. The Tigers tied the score as late as 6-6 before the Ichabods started to pull away. Trailing by eight, 18-10, FHSU put together a four-point rally to trim the deficit in half, but the Ichabods thwarted the run before the Tigers could tie things up. Washburn then scored seven of the first nine points out of the locker room in the third set, swinging an efficient .370 to close out the match.

Isabelle Reynolds led the match with 11 kills, while Bre Becker tossed up a team-high 25 assists to go along with eight digs. Taylor White led the Tigers with 10 digs.

Fort Hays State posted a hitting percentage of .099 on the night, while the Ichabods countered with a .296 swing rate. Both sides found success behind the service line, with the teams combining for nine service aces (WU 5, FHSU 4).

The Tigers will return to action Saturday when they host Emporia State at 3 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Broncos return two interceptions for TDs in win over Cardinals

Emmanuel Sanders threw and caught touchdown passes, Denver returned two interceptions for first-quarter touchdowns and the Broncos snapped a four-game losing streak with a 45-10 rout of the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night.

Todd Davis returned rookie Josh Rosen’s deflected pass for a touchdown on the second play of the game and Chris Harris Jr. took another back 53 yards for a score with 2:02 left in the quarter as the Broncos (3-4) opened a 21-3 lead.

Rosen threw three interceptions and fumbled the ball away twice on a rough night that began badly for him and never got better. He limped off the field after he was sacked for the fifth time, on a fourth-and-16 play near the end of the game.

The Cardinals (1-6), down 35-3 at the half, fell to 0-4 at home for the first time since 1979.

Case Keenum completed 14 of 21 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown with one interception for Denver. Phillip Lindsay rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries, including a 28-yard TD run.

Rosen had called a time out after the game’s first play. Then his pass was deflected by the outstretched hand of defensive end Derek Wolfe. The ball dropped into the hands of Davis, who ran it in from there.

Arizona followed with a three-and-out and the Broncos quickly made it 14-0 with a six-play, 77-yard drive. Sanders took the ball on an end around and threw to a wide open Courtland Sutton 28 yards for the touchdown.

The receiver may have run the wrong route on Rosen’s second “pick six.” In a third-and-one situation from the Arizona 46, Rosen passed but there was no one near the ball except Harris, who returned it 53 yards to make it 21-3.

The Broncos made it 28-3 in the second quarter when Keenum found Harris wide open on a 64-yard TD play, the Denver receiver doing a front flip over the goal line.

A pass interference play against Bene Benwikere in the end zone set up Royce Freeman’s one-yard TD run that made it 35-3 with 21 seconds left in the half. The run capped a 15-play, 70-yard drive that used up 6:39.

The Arizona fans booed as the team left the field for the half, while there were cheers from the sizable contingent of orange-clad Broncos supporters.

FITZ SCORES

The Cardinals got their only touchdown in the third quarter, Rosen throwing four yards to Larry Fitzgerald for the score. Fitzgerald’s first TD catch of the season came at the end of an 11-play, 63-yard drive that followed Patrick Peterson’s interception. Fitzgerald’s 111 career TDs tie him with Tony Gonzalez for seventh on the NFL’s career list.

INJURIES

Denver lost two players to injury in the first half.

Rookie punt returner DaeSean Hamilton left with a knee injury after Arizona’s Brandon Williams rolled into his legs as he was waiting for the ball to make a fair catch. Williams was penalized for interfering on the play.

Safety Darian Stewart left the game with a neck injury in the first quarter.

Arizona tight end Ricky Seals-Jones, trying to run down Rosen’s fumble, slammed his left forearm against an opponent’s helmet and didn’t return.

UP NEXT

Broncos: At Kansas City on Oct. 28.

Cardinals: Host San Francisco on Oct. 28.

Rogers State to join MIAA in 2019-2020

(Courtesy Rogers State Athletics)

Rogers State University will join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association starting in fall 2019 pending formal approval from the university’s governing board.

The MIAA conference leadership on Thursday afternoon voted to welcome RSU as an associate member for the 2019-2020 season in all sports in which the university participates. The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents, which governs RSU, will consider the issue during its Oct. 24 meeting.

The MIAA is a 14-school, NCAA Division II athletic conference featuring public and private institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The conference includes area schools such as Northeastern State, University of Central Oklahoma, Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern State. Other MIAA schools include Central Missouri, Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Lincoln University, Lindenwood, Missouri Western, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Northwest Missouri State, Southwest Baptist and Washburn.

RSU Director of Athletics Chris Ratcliff said a move to the MIAA aligns well with the athletic department’s mission moving forward.

“The MIAA is known for its championship-caliber athletic programs, emphasis on academic excellence and a commitment to community service, and these traits align perfectly with RSU’s vision for our athletic programs,” he said. “Additionally, the conference’s geographic footprint lends itself to natural rivalries with area schools that will excite our fans, while also reducing travel time for student-athletes.”

RSU President Dr. Larry Rice said the MIAA shares RSU’s commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes through its emphasis on academics, sportsmanship, ethical conduct and community service.

“At RSU, we strive to ensure that our student-athletes are successful in competition, in the classroom and in the community,” Rice said. “The MIAA shares our commitment to developing student-athletes who will earn their diplomas and then go out into the world to make a positive difference.”

The MIAA participates in conference championships for all sports in which RSU competes, including baseball and softball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s track and field. While most MIAA members compete in football, the conference in June removed specific sports sponsorship requirements (including football) for member institutions; RSU officials said the university will not be adding football to its athletic programs.

The 2018-2019 season marks RSU’s final year as a member of the Heartland Conference.

McGuire and Nunnery reach milestones for HHS Volleyball

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-In October of 2000 Hannah McGuire was born. A little over one year later, in November of 2001, Tasiah Nunnery entered the world. These two have been great friends since they have been old enough to walk and talk. They go to church together, they go to school together, they hang out together, and they definitely play volleyball together.

The two Hays High Lady Indian Volleyball players have both reached some significant milestones in the past couple of weeks. McGuire, who is a senior for the Lady Indians and has been on varsity since her sophomore season, entered the 1,000 assist club on Tuesday in Salina. Sheis now sitting with 1,023 career assists with sub-state play scheduled this weekend in Andover and an opportunity to add to her impressive numbers.

Nunnery, a junior, has played at the varsity level since she was a freshman. Earlier this month she powered her way into the 1,000 kills club at Hays High and now sits with 1,075 career kills with the remainder of this season and all of next still to come. The sky is the limit for this young lady who is the reigning Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

These two feats did not happen by accident. There is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that has been spilled on volleyball courts across the state of Kansas. Whether they were competing in club volleyball, competing on summer teams, or participating in the countless hours of practice in the Hays High Gym there is one thing that is very evident…these girls love to play the game of volleyball.

McGuire and Nunnery aren’t going to toot their own horns. They are going to give credit to their teammates for the great passes, the great blocks, the great digs, and most importantly…the incredible friendships. Their attitudes are contagious, their smiles are captivating, and their competitive drive has led them to be two of the best at their positions.

On the personal side, as I set my journalistic neutrality aside, it puts a big smile on my face to watch these two young ladies succeed. They deserve all of the accolades that they receive. Why do I say that? Because I have known them all of their lives. These two are really good volleyball players but the winning point is the fact that they are way better at being really good people.

Congratulations on such a huge accomplishment. Congratulations to ALL of their teammates who helped them get to these milestones. Congratulations to the coaches who put in endless hours of instruction and encouragement to help them. What a ride it has been for this writer, this fan, this dad. Good luck at sub-state this weekend in Andover ladies. And Hannah, dad loves you!
