Indian’s second half comeback falls short in Garden City

Hays High were on the road in Garden City on Friday night.  The game marked the third road trip in the first four weeks of the season for the Indians.

Garden City scored on four of their five, first half drives to build a 28-0 lead over the Hays.  Indian miscues set up the Buffaloes in excellent field position as quarterback Carlos Acosta scored on three rushing touchdowns and threw a 48 yard scoring pass.  Hays threw an interception, punted the ball on a three play drive, fumbled a kick off return, had a punt blocked and missed a field goal in the first half.

Highlights

Hays though would not go quietly.  The Indians forced a fumble on Garden City’s first drive of the second half.  Five plays later Palmer Hutchison hit Dylan Ruder for a 13 yard touchdown to make the score 28-7.  Garden City scored on their next drive after recovering an onside kick by the Indians to go back up 35-7.  Hays scored on their next drive on a 37 yard Hutchison run and after recovering another fumble, scored one play later when Willie Sennett caught a 32 yard pass to close the game down to 35-21.

The Indians then recovered an onside kick and scored twenty seconds in to the fourth quarter on a Hutchison seven yard run closing the gap down to 35-28.  After being shutout in the first half, Hays scored 28 points in 12:20 in the second half.

Hays forced Garden City to punt on their next two drives but threw an interception and lost the ball on downs.  Garden City took their final drive just 32 yards but ran 5:52 off the clock before losing the ball on downs at the six yard line.  Hays then drove to the Garden City 37 yard line but a hail mary landed incomplete for a 35-28 loss.

Hays returns home for three straight games starting with Wichita South on September 28th.

Hoisington uses quick strike offense to down TMP

HAYS – The Hoisington Cardinals took advantage of several big plays in the first half on their way to a 42-0 win over the TMP-Marian Monarchs Friday at Lewis Field Stadium.

It took the Cardinals just six offensive plays to build a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

Hoisington forced the Monarchs into three-and-outs on their first three possessions and scored on just two plays each time.

Hoisington got a 37 yard touchdown run from Xavier Robinson, a 58 yard TD run from Wyatt Pedigo and a 15 yards TD run from Braxton Donovan to build the 21-0 lead through one quarter.

Hoisington added three more second quarter scored to build a 42-0 halftime lead and with a running clock in the second half they would go on to win by that score.

Wyatt Pedigo lead all players with 159 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He also added three receptions for 50 yards and one score. Cardinals quarterback Derek Boxberger finished 7-for-12 for 129 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception.

The Monarchs were led by Kaleb Hagans who finished with 43 yards on 14 carries.

Gorillas spoil Tiger volleyball home opener

HAYS, Kan. – Despite heading to the locker room after a come-from-behind victory in the second set, the Fort Hays State volleyball team could not quite get over the hump in its home opener Friday (Sept. 21), falling to Pittsburg State 3-1. The Tigers dip to 6-10 this season and 0-4 in MIAA play, while the Gorillas are now 14-3 overall and 3-1 in league action.

The visitors quickly built a big lead in the opening set, jumping in front by six, 11-5, after a 6-1 run. PSU built the lead as high as nine before a four-point Tiger run trimmed the deficit to 19-14. Isabelle Reynolds threw down a kill before combining with Christianna Herron on a block to start the run, followed by back-to-back miscues by the Gorillas. Pittsburg State bounced back after a Tiger error returned serve to the visitors, allowing PSU to take the opening set, 25-18.

Fort Hays State got off to another slow start in the second set, quickly trailing by six prompting a timeout, 9-3. Again down by six later in the set, the Tigers began to chip away thanks to a 7-2 run. A kill from Azlyn Cassaday sparked the rally before Reynolds and Tatum Bartels combined for blocks on two of the next three points. Reynolds then tossed down back-to-back kills, prompting a PSU timeout. A big swing from Morgan West helped the Tigers close within one out of the timeout, 18-17. The Gorillas took the next two points to again go up three, but FHSU closed the set on an 8-3 run to send the teams to the locker room knotted up at one set.

Herron opened the rally with a kill before Reynolds dropped in her first service ace of the night. A Gorilla error tied the set for the first time, 20-20. The sides traded points until the Black and Gold found themselves trailing 23-22. Kayla Vitztum tied things up again at 23 with a kill before pairing up with Bartels on a block to give the Tigers their first lead and their first set point opportunity of the match. After an attempted dig for PSU sailed over the net, Bartels blocked it back over the net to hand the Tigers a 25-23 victory.

The Tigers again fought from behind all throughout the third set, but another late rally was not meant to be. Pittsburg State appeared to be cruising to a win after establishing an 18-10 lead. Kills from the freshman duo of Vitztum and Reynolds combined with a pair of Gorilla errors quickly trimmed that lead in half, prompting a PSU timeout. The pair added two more kills out of the break, helping FHSU close within two, 18-16. The Gorillas rebounded to reach set point shortly thereafter, 24-20. Two visitor miscues and two more kills from Vitztum tied the score at 24-24 and quickly turned up the tension inside the Coliseum, but a service error and a kill from Lauren Regier brought the rally to a screeching halt, 26-24.

Cassaday recorded a kill before dropping in a service ace to give the Tigers just their second lead of the night to open the fourth frame, but the Gorillas fought back to lead just seven points later, 5-4. The score was tied as late as 9-9, but a five-point run for the visitors put PSU in front for good. The Tigers closed within two after a solo block from Herron before the Gorillas scored eight of the final 10 points to take the match, 25-17.

Fort Hays State posted a .121 attack percentage, adding eight blocks two service aces. The Gorillas countered with a .179 swing rate, nine blocks and eight aces. Vitztum, one of six Tigers with at least six kills, led the balanced offense with 11 kills. Herron contributed eight kills and three blocks (one solo) while Bartels added six kills and five blocks (one solo). Bre Becker and Katie Darnell split the setting duties, both tossing up 20 assists. Libero Abbie Hayes led the team with 17 digs, with Cassaday adding 14 digs and eight kills offensively.

The Tigers’ short homestand wraps up Saturday (Sept. 22) when #16 Central Oklahoma makes the trip to Hays for a 4 p.m. first serve.

Tiger women’s soccer ends non-conference play with loss to Ichabods

TOPEKA, Kan. – Hoping to avoid a fourth-straight overtime match, the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team took on Washburn in Topeka Friday for their final non-conference contest of the season. While extra time was not needed, the Tigers were unable to get ahead of the Ichabods as they fell 3-1. With the loss, Fort Hays State drops to 2-3-2 this season, while Washburn ends their non-MIAA schedule at 4-3 overall.

Through the first 45 minutes, neither the Tigers nor the Ichabods gained advantage over the other. Play remained even in the first half with both teams recording four shots, but none found the back of the net.

The second half was more offensively driven for both teams with the Tigers and Ichabods once again equalizing shot attempts with eight apiece. However, three Washburn attempts resulted goals. Mackenzie Heiman got the Ichabods on the board first as she earned her second goal of the season in the 59th minute. Less than one minute later Ellie Karloff put Washburn up 2-0 with her first goal of 2018 in the 60th minute. The scoring for the Ichabods commenced in the 71st minute as Tera Lynch achieved her second goal for the season to add to the Washburn lead at 3-0.

Jordan Thompson scored the first goal of her Tiger career in the 82nd minute to help Fort Hays State avoid a shutout. The Ichabods maintained their advantage in the closing minutes to take the 3-1 victory.

Both the Tigers and Ichabods ended the match with 12 shot attempts, Washburn with six shots on goal as opposed to four by Fort Hays State. Washburn claimed the fouls column as they were called for 14, compared to just six for the Tigers.

Much like shot attempts, the teams mirrored each other with three saves in the game. Whitney Bockover earned the win on 12 shots faced and improved her season record to 2-0. Megan Kneefel took the loss for the Tigers and dropped to 2-3-2 on the season. She ended the match with one save. Deonna Wellbrock played her first minutes this season, capturing two saves.

The Tigers open up MIAA play on Sunday (Sept. 23) when they travel to Emporia State, a team they have already seen this year in a match that concluded in a 1-1 tie. That contest is slated for 2 p.m.

FHSU men’s soccer sets record for goals scored in win over Bearcats

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team defeated Southwest Baptist on Friday (Sept. 21), 9-0, behind Santiago Agudelo’s hat trick. This was the Tigers’ second hat trick of the season and seventh in school history. The Tigers improved to 4-2-1 on the season and begin MIAA play 1-0, while the Bearcats moved to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Tigers began the game aggressive by firing off ten shots in the first ten minutes of the match as FHSU scored three goals in the first 7:50 of the contest. Arsenio Chamorro got things started for the Tigers as he connected on his second goal of the season on a pass from Tobias Patino, who placed the ball about 25 yards out from a corner kick that Chamorro drilled into the back of the net.

Agudelo scored his fourth goal of the year in the seventh minute after Chamorro’s shot hit the post and Agudelo picked up the rebound and fired the ball into the net, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Chamorro increased the Tiger lead to 3-0 just 1:08 later, scoring his second goal of the contest on a pass from Agudelo on the left side of box to the foot of Chamorro who snuck the ball past the goalkeeper.

Coming off the bench, Nathan De La Hoya scored his first goal of the season on a through pass up the middle from Moritz Walther. Then, in the 26th minute Mauricio Etcheverry took a free kick and passed the ball ahead to De La Hoya, who flicked the ball ahead to Agudelo and then beat the keeper near the post for his second score of the contest and fifth of the season.

Fort Hays State took a commanding 5-0 lead into intermission after recording 16 shots in the first period, nine of those on frame.

The second half started about the same way as the first when Patino connected on a pass to Abdoulaye Cisse, who crossed the ball into the box to Agudelo who completed the hat trick in the 49th minute. In the 51st minute of the match, Patino collected his third assist of the contest when he found Agudelo over the top up the middle, who found Luis Torres in the box and scored his second goal of the season, taking a 7-0 lead over the Bearcats.

Alonso Rodriguez found the back of the net for the first time this year when he collected a ricochet off the keeper’s chest to make the score 8-0 in the 60th minute. The Tigers weren’t done yet as Mariano Benitez found Antonio De La Torre on a give-and-go pass that beat the keeper on the left side of the box.

After all was said and done, FHSU broke the school record for goals in a single match (nine) and points in a match (29), while they tied the match record for assists (11). The Tigers produced the fourth most shots in a single match with 31 on the afternoon. The Tigers set the largest margin of victory and the largest margin of victory on the road in school history with the 9-0 final score.

Agudelo set the individual record for the most points in a match (eight). He scored three goals (seventh hat trick in team history) and produced two assists. Patino tied the second-most assists in a match, when he supplied three different Tigers with goals. Caden Frank enters the top-five all-time with seven shots in the match, while tying the record for most shots on goal in a single contest (five).

Fort Hays State improved to 11-0 all-time against Southwest Baptist. Cullen Fisch earned the victory in goal, improving to 4-2 on the young season.

The Tigers are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to take on No. 8 Northeastern State for a 1 p.m. kickoff on the pitch.

Royals lose despite hitting four homers and three doubles

DETROIT (AP) – Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire watched Christin Stewart put on a show in batting practice and thought his rookie slugger might have a big night.

Gardenhire got even more than he expected.

Stewart hit his first career homer in the first inning, hit another home run in the second inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh as the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 11-8 on Thursday night.

“The ball was flying out in BP, especially when he was hitting them, so I had a feeling he might have a big night,” Gardenhire said. “What he did tonight is the reason he’s considered one of our top prospects.”

Stewart, a September call-up playing in his 11th game, became the first Tigers rookie to drive in six runs in a game since Ryan Raburn had seven against the Chicago White Sox on July 25, 2007.

“I felt great before the game, but there are days you have a great BP and a terrible game, so I didn’t want to get too confident,” he said. “It was an awesome feeling, though.”

Six Tigers had at least two hits and Detroit snapped a seven-game home losing streak.

Kansas City lost its fifth straight despite hitting three doubles and four homers.

“We swung the bats well,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We just didn’t pitch well.”

The Tigers led 9-5 after two innings as the teams combined for five home runs, six doubles, a triple and a double steal. By that point, both starting pitchers were gone.

Detroit’s Matthew Boyd allowed five runs while getting four outs.

“Gardy definitely made the right move getting me out of there,” Boyd said. “I just didn’t have anything out there.”

Kansas City’s Jorge Lopez (2-5) gave up seven runs without getting an out in the second.

“I was up from the first pitch I threw,” he said. “The plan was to keep the ball down, but I couldn’t make pitches.”

Zac Reininger (1-0), the second of seven Detroit pitchers, picked up his first major-league victory.

Jorge Bonifacio gave the Royals the lead with a three-run homer off Boyd in the first, but the Tigers came back with four in the bottom of the inning. Stewart hit a two-run homer just over the right-field fence and Nicholas Castellanos hit the next pitch to nearly the same spot.

Grayson Greiner made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and the runs kept coming in the second. Brian Goodwin gave the Royals a 5-4 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the inning, but Stewart made it five RBIs in two innings with a long three-run home run in the Tigers’ second.

“I was running to first and praying on the first one because I didn’t know if it was going to get out,” said Stewart, who has 83 minor-league homers in the last three seasons. “The second one, I knew it was gone.”

Glenn Sparkman replaced Lopez and gave up a triple to Castellanos and Victor Martinez’s RBI double before getting the first out of the second inning. Greiner picked up his second RBI with a two-out single, giving the Tigers a 9-5 lead.

Hunter Dozier hit a two-run homer off Reininger in the fourth, pulling the Royals within 9-7, but the next four relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings as Detroit maintained the lead into the ninth inning.

“We didn’t want to use that many arms in the first game of a four-game series, but they did the job,” Gardenhire said.

Stewart walked with the bases loaded in the seventh for his sixth RBI.

Adalberto Mondesi homered off Shane Greene in the ninth to make it 11-8.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Tigers: INF Niko Goodrum (quad) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (back) both took grounders before the game. Gardenhire said Candelario could play as soon as Saturday with Goodrum possibly returning Monday.

V-MART KEEPS HIS RECORD

In the first inning, Victor Martinez lined a ball into the right-center field gap – the perfect place for a triple at spacious Comerica Park – but his lack of speed turned it into a double. With nine games left in his final season, Martinez has 3,937 plate appearances for the Tigers without hitting a triple, the most in franchise history. Aaron Robinson is second with 868.

STEWART’S BIG DAY

Stewart came within inches of an even more memorable game. In the seventh, with the bases loaded and a 3-2 count, he lined a Brandon Maurer slider into the right-field corner for what looked like a bases-clearing double.

That would have tied Harry Heilmann and Jim Northrup’s franchise record of eight RBIs in a game, but the ball sliced just foul. He drew the bases-loaded walk on the next pitch.

“That was a great at-bat,” Gardenhire said. “He got a 3-2 pitch he could drive, then came right back and had the patience to take the walk.”

UP NEXT

The teams continue their four-game series on Friday night, with Ian Kennedy (2-8, 4.73) starting against Detroit’s Francisco Liriano (5-10, 4.54).

Archer shines as Pirates top Royals for 3-game sweep

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Chris Archer pitched seven strong innings, and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 2-1 win on Wednesday night.

In his most impressive start since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31, Archer (5-8) allowed one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander made it out of the sixth inning for the first time in nine starts for the Pirates, who traded for him in hopes of making a playoff run.

The Pirates remain marooned in fourth place in the NL Central despite a five-game winning streak that’s moved them three games over .500.

Felipe Vazquez allowed one walk in the ninth but earned his 35th save one day after he let a 1-0 lead slip away – his fifth blown save of the season. The Pirates went on to win 2-1 in 11 innings on Tuesday night.

Adam Frazier broke a 1-1 tie with a homer to right-center with two outs in the fifth inning off rookie right-hander Heath Fillmyer (3-2). It was Frazier’s ninth homer of the season, and it came two days after he fouled a ball off his knee.

The injury held Frazier out of the starting lineup Tuesday, although he entered in the ninth and played the final three innings. He started Wednesday at second base.

Fillmyer allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in seven innings for Kansas City, which has lost four straight after winning five of six.

Colin Moran put the Pirates on the board first with a single to left that scored Corey Dickerson, who was 2 for 3 with two doubles, in the second inning. Adalberto Mondesi tied it with a homer to center, his 10th, in the third.

LINEUP CHANGE

Royals: OF Jorge Bonifacio was taken out of the starting lineup after going 0 for 4 with four strikeouts and one walk Tuesday. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and drew a walk.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Pirates: RHP Chad Kuhl underwent elbow surgery on Wednesday. No further details regarding the operation were provided. Kuhl was re-examined by Dr. David Altchek in New York on Tuesday. He last pitched on June 26.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Jorge Lopez (2-4, 3.93 ERA) is expected to start against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. He left Kansas City’s game against the Minnesota Twins on Sept. 14 with a left rib contusion sustained in a collision with 3B Hunter Dozier.

Pirates: RHP Ivan Nova (9-9, 4.07) takes the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday. In his past two starts, Nova has allowed one run on seven hits over 12 innings with 13 strikeouts and two walks.
