Hays High holds off Liberal to give Crough first win

Hays High played their first home game of 2018 Friday night hosting the Liberal Redskins.

Hays turned the ball over on three of their five first half possessions and Liberal punted on three of the six and lost the ball on downs once.  The result of the first two quarters was a tie at seven points a piece.

Liberal’s Jaylin Staten ripped off a 65 yard run to give the Redskins a 7-0 after picking off an Indian pass.  Hays responded on the next drive in the first quarter driving 81 yards on 9 plays which was capped off by a six yard Palmer Hutchison score.

Highlights

Liberal’s first drive of the second half was kept alive after Hays ran into the punter on 4th and 4.  Syris Dunlap took advantage with a 60 yard touchdown run for a Liberal 14-7 lead.

The Indians responded right back on a seven play seventy yard drive finished off by a second Hutchison score to even the game at 14.  The next Liberal drive ended when Tavian Creamer picked off the first pass of his career for Hays.  The Indians drove to midfield then on 4th and 2, Hutchison ran for 48 yards to the three yard line.  Hayden Brown punched in the go ahead run two plays later.  Cole Schroeder hit his third extra point of the night for a 21-14 lead.

The Indians recovered an uncovered kickoff on the next play but gave the ball back after four plays.  Liberal drove the field converting on third and fourth downs, scoring on a twelve yard pass from Dunlap to Lee Hatcher for a 21-20 score.  The score remained the same as Keaton Markley, a few plays after leaving with an injury, blocked the extra point.

Hays recovered the Liberal onside kick and with a first down took a 21-20 victory.

Coach Tony Crough

Hayden Brown ran for 151 yards and Palmer Hutchison for 157.  Hays moves to 1-2 on the year and is 1-1 in the WAC.  Liberal drops to 1-2 and 0-1.

Tiger women’s soccer draws for second-consecutive match; tie Hornets

HAYS, Kan. – For the second-straight match this season, 90 minutes of play was not enough as the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team took to two overtime sessions, ultimately ending in a 1-1 tie. With the draw, Fort Hays State drops to 1-2-2 on the season while Emporia State records its first tie of the season to dip to 3-1-1.

Emporia State led the offensive push in the first 45 minutes of play, leading the Tigers in the shot column with five shots while limiting Fort Hays State to just one attempt. Neither team could find the back of the net, leaving the score knotted up at 0-0 heading into halftime. With the next 45 minutes of play ahead of them, both squads evened out their shot attempts with both the Tigers and Hornets attempting five in the half.

With the potential for overtime looming, the Hornets stung first as Shelby Keyes captured her first goal of the season in the 75th minute to claim the first 1-0 lead of the match. The Tigers would not back down though as they equalized the score at 1-1 with Olympia Katsouridis capturing her first goal of her sophomore campaign in the 83rd minute as she completed a header from an assist by Cailey Perkins on the left side of the goal. The final minutes of regulation resulted in neither team gaining the advantage, sending the match to a first decisive period.

Emporia State tried to end the match with a win as they attempted two shots while leaving the Tigers shot-less in the first overtime. However, the second and final overtime went in favor of Fort Hays State who attempted their share of two shots with neither resulting in a goal. After 110 minutes of play, the Tigers and Hornets ended in a draw in their non-conference match.

Maria Walden for Emporia State led all players with four shots including two on goal, while Darby Hirsch accounted for three of her own for the Tigers. The Hornets ended the match with 12 shots compared to just eight by the Tigers. Taking her second-straight tie in goal for Fort Hays State was Megan Kneefel who tallied five saves in the tilt. Kneefel now owns 33 saves through five matches for the Tigers. Taking the tie on the other side was Hornet keeper Jillian Patton who recorded just one save in the match.

The Tigers are back in action for the second of three-straight non-conference matches against MIAA foes. They host Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday with a kickoff set for 1 p.m.

FHSU volleyball held in check in MIAA opener

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team opened MIAA play with a 3-0 road loss against Washburn Friday evening (Sept. 14). The Tigers were unable to get into a rhythm against a tough Ichabod defense that totaled 12 blocks in the match.

Fort Hays State moves to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods remain undefeated at 13-0 and 1-0 in league action.

Washburn took control early and never let up in the first set, capturing the first six points to force the Tigers to use an early timeout. The teams traded points for the rest of the set but Washburn’s defense stood tall, not allowing FHSU more than two consecutive points for the entire frame.

A service error and a kill from Kayla Vitztum gave the Tigers an early 2-0 lead to start the second set, but Washburn grabbed a stranglehold on the game thanks to a 13-2 run, including a seven-straight points to take the lead for good. Later, with the Tigers trailing by nine, the Tigers strung together four-consecutive points to ultimately pull within three, 22-19, thanks to an 8-2 run. Washburn rebounded after taking a timeout, taking the set 25-21 after a kill from Kelsey Gordon.

Azlyn Cassaday handed the Tigers the lead yet again to start the third set with a kill before multiple Ichabod errors and a strike from Christianna Herron gave the Tigers their largest lead of the evening, 5-2. FHSU held the lead as late as 7-6 after a kill from Morgan West, but Washburn slowly established a lead before scoring the final five points to take the match, 25-15.

The Tigers were limited to a .009 hitting percentage, its lowest outing in more than six years (.000 vs. UNK, 9/11/12). Washburn countered with a .262 swing rate. Both sides dug out 48 balls, with the Ichabods holding a 37-24 edge in assists.

Cassaday led the Tigers with 10 kills while adding four digs defensively. Abbie Hayes tallied 18 digs on the back line and dropped in one of two FHSU aces. Amirah Bentley tossed up a team-best 12 assists in the loss.

The Tigers will look to get back to .500 overall and in league play Saturday when they travel to take on Emporia State at 3 p.m.

Perez, Bonifacio go back-to-back; Royals beat Twins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Salvador Perez and Jorge Bonifacio hit back-to-back homers during a four-run sixth inning, Heath Fillmyer pitched into the eighth and the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4 on Thursday night.

The loss by the Twins, who occupy second place in the woeful AL Central, reduced the division-leading Cleveland Indians’ magic number to two.

The Royals were hitless until Hunter Dozier greeted Alan Busenitz, the Twins’ third pitcher in the game, with a leadoff double to left field in the sixth.

Perez followed with a 420-foot drive to left field to put the Royals ahead 3-2, and then Bonifacio hit one into the Twins’ bullpen off Busenitz (4-1), who didn’t record an out. Adalberto Mondesi added an RBI single as the Royals sent 10 batters to the plate.

Fillmyer (3-1) worked 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and matching his career high with six strikeouts. In his previous start, the Twins bludgeoned him for six runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Fillmyer left in the eighth with runners on the corners, both of whom eventually scored against relievers Brian Flynn and Brandon Maurer.

Jerry Vasto got the last out in the eighth, and Wily Peralta worked a perfect ninth for his 11th save in 11 opportunities.

Jake Cave put the Twins ahead in the second with a two-run homer, his 11th of the season.

The Twins went with a bullpen day, opening with Gabriel Moya, who worked two scoreless innings. Stephen Gonsalves pitched the next three, allowing no hits but walking four, and the last of those walks turned into a run in the fifth when Whit Merrifield scored on an error by shortstop Jorge Polanco.

Merrifield singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Alex Gordon’s fielder’s choice for an eighth-inning insurance run.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: OF Brett Phillips (shoulder) remains available as a pinch runner, but hasn’t been fully cleared.

Molitor declined to put a timetable on a possible return. … DH Eddie Rosario returned after re-aggravating a quad injury he initially suffered on Aug. 30.

Late goal dooms FHSU men in 1-0 defeat to Sea Lions in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 18th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team fell to Point Loma Nazarene on Thursday (Sept. 13), 1-0. The Tigers dip to 3-2 overall on the season, while the Sea Lions improve to 2-2 on the year.

The Tigers were able to have a couple scoring opportunities in the first half, but the Sea Lion defense stifled any momentum from Fort Hays State. Both teams could not get anything going as the match was scoreless at intermission.

FHSU outshot Point Loma Nazarene 16-3 in the second but could not capitalize on those advantages. The Sea Lions were able to slip past the Tiger defense late with the deciding goal in the 88th minute. PLNU scored on a ball that got past Tiger goalkeeper Cullen Fisch near the crossbar and slipped in for the score.

Santiago Agudelo led the Tigers with six shots in the contest. Fisch took the loss in goal for the Tigers as he moves to 3-2 in goal on the season. The opportunities were there for the Tigers as they out-shot the Sea Lions 21-6 in the contest.

The Tigers continue their west coast swing on Saturday as they head up north to take on Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. The Tigers and Eagles are slated to kick off at 6 p.m. CT/4 p.m. PT.

Anderson’s 12th-inning homer leads White Sox past Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tim Anderson hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Anderson’s blast off Burch Smith (1-5), the sixth Royals pitcher, landed just beyond the fence in left-center.

Juan Minaya (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Hector Santiago, the eighth Chicago pitcher, picked up his second save in as many chances.

Jose Rondon also homered for the White Sox, who snapped a seven-game skid, one game short of their season-worst losing streak.

Adalberto Mondesi tied a career high with four hits and drove in both of Kansas City’s runs.

Both teams wasted plenty of scoring chances, the last of which belonged to the Royals in the bottom of the 11th. With one out and runners on second and third, Rosell Herrera lined to short, with pinch-runner Brett Phillips getting doubled off third.

Royals starter Eric Skogland pitched five innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. He made his first start since May 25 after a long stint on the disabled list with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament. He returned Sept. 4 and had pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Whit Merrifield stole two bases to bring his season total to 35, a new career high. He led the AL with 34 swipes last season and tops the league again this year.

After Merrifield stole second in the third inning, Mondesi drove him in with a single for the game’s first run. Mondesi stole his 22nd base, his 17th since the All-Star break.

The White Sox answered with two runs in the fourth on Rondon’s homer to left, scoring Avisail Garcia, who reached on a two-out walk.

The Royals tied it in the fifth but had a chance for a bigger inning. Ryan O’Hearn reached on a one-out walk, and Merrifield followed with a double to the wall in left center. But O’Hearn went too far around third and was picked off. Merrifield then stole third and scored on Mondesi’s second RBI single.

The White Sox had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, and then loaded the bases with two outs. But Glenn Sparkman induced a fielder’s-choice grounder from Tim Anderson to end the inning.

The Royals loaded the bases in the seventh as well but did not score.

TRAINER’S ROOM

White Sox: INF Matt Davidson remains out of the lineup with what Manager Rick Renteria called sore knees. “Maybe these next four days are just giving him that time to recover,” Renteria said. … 3B Yoan Moncada was out of the lineup. “He’s a little sore in the hip,” Renteria said. “Today and a natural day off tomorrow, maybe that will help him.”

Royals: INF Hunter Dozier was scratched with a sore back. “It’s nothing serious,” Dozier said before the game. “It’s just a little back tightness. It’s kind of built up and I woke up this morning pretty sore. I could have played, probably, but they decided to give me one day. I’ll be 100 percent tomorrow.”

UP NEXT

White Sox: RHP James Shields (6-16, 4.58 ERA) goes in Baltimore on Friday.
