Tiger men’s soccer drops first conference match since 2017

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – For the first time in 734 days, No. 18 Fort Hays State men’s soccer fell in a conference matchup. On Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19), the Northeastern State defeated FHSU, 4-1.

The RiverHawks Flynn Semmerling began the scoring inside of the first five minutes and continued on to a hat trick, adding goals in the 19th and 25th minutes.

Northeastern State remained very persistent on the offensive end, registering 20 shots at goalkeeper Kieran Brown, who recorded four saves in the contest.

FHSU attempted to ignite their offensive play late in the match when Arsenio Chamorro collected his second goal of the season in the 85th minute, but were unable to add any more.

Over two years ago, similarly, the Tigers traveled to Tahlequah and fell to Northeastern State, 3-1. Since that loss, FHSU has created a remarkable streak of 17-0-1 in all conference games – winning its final two in 2017, all eight in MIAA play in 2018, and the first seven of the current season now as members of the GAC.

The RiverHawks’ latest victory splits the season series at one win each. The Tigers found their victory on a game-winning overtime goal by Santiago Agudelo in September. With the loss, Fort Hays State is now 8-4-1 on the season and 7-1-1 in Great American Conference games. Northeastern State, following their victory, advances to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the GAC.

FHSU will get ready to host Harding University (7-3-2, 6-2-1 GAC) next week in a pivotal conference game. The Bisons currently sit second in the Great American Conference standings with a record of 7-3-2 (6-2-1 GAC), just one game back in the loss column to the Tigers.

Fort Hays State Football heads to Pittsburg State on Saturday for another pivotal MIAA matchup. The 4-2 Tigers face the 5-1 Gorillas at 1 pm inside Carnie Smith Stadium. The Gorillas enter the game as the No. 19/21 ranked team in Division II, while the Tigers are on a four-game win streak.

Fort Hays State is coming off a 19-3 Homecoming win over Emporia State in Hays last week. The Tiger defense has been solid of late, holding their last three opponents to seven points or less (3 vs. Missouri Southern, 7 at Central Oklahoma, 3 vs. Emporia State). FHSU is the only squad in the MIAA to hold opponents inside 10 points in more than one game this year. As a result, FHSU now leads the MIAA in scoring defense allowing 18.8 points per game.

Pittsburg State is coming off a 38-17 loss in a battle of nationally ranked teams with Northwest Missouri State at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City last week. It was the first loss of the season for the Gorillas as now only two unbeaten teams remain in the MIAA (Northwest Missouri and Central Missouri). Pittsburg State dropped six spots in the AFCA Top 25 Poll after the loss from No. 13 to No. 19.

Fort Hays State won the last three meetings with Pittsburg State. Last year in Hays, FHSU won 50-21. The teams have not met in Pittsburg since 2016, when the Tigers claimed a 54-41 win in a shootout. The Tigers have won the last two meetings of the teams in Pittsburg, claiming the 2014 matchup 7-6. The 2016 meeting was Homecoming for Pittsburg State and FHSU serves as the Homecoming opponent again this year.

Aside from owning the best scoring defense in the MIAA, Fort Hays State ranks 14th in NCAA Division II in passing yards per game. The Tigers are averaging 295.5 yards per game through the air. They have balanced the passing game well during their current win streak, rushing for over 160 yards in all four wins. FHSU produced a season-high 183 yards on the ground last week against Emporia State, while producing its season low in passing yards (209). Quarterback Chance Fuller ranks ninth in NCAA Division II for passing yards per game (285.2) and fifth for passing touchdowns (18).

The Tigers have had a 100-yard rusher in three out of the last four games. Charles Tigner went for 125 yards against Washburn and 111 against Emporia State, while D.J. Hickman reeled off 121 at Central Oklahoma. Harley Hazlett leads the receiving corps with 40 catches for 541 yards. Hazlett ranks 13th in NCAA Division II for receptions per game (6.7) and seventh for receiving touchdowns (8).

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Drew Harvey leads the Tigers in tackles with 50. Tanner Hoekman is the team leader in interceptions with three, while ranking second on the team in tackles with 48. Sheldon Schmidt is the team leader in sacks with three.

Area Game of the Week: Phillipsburg @ Hoisington

As district battles intensify, dreams can end on any given Friday night. This week’s installment of the Area Game of the Week saw the Phillipsburg Panthers pay a visit to the undefeated Hoisington Cardinals.

Hoisington entered the game ranked number 1 in 2A. A large part of that ranking has to do with senior running back Wyatt Pedigo. Pedigo showed everyone in the house why when he took the first play from scrimmage 84 yards for a touchdown. Before Phillipsburg could breathe, junior Cade Mason had cashed in for another touchdown, making the score 14-0 in favor of the home team.

Phillipsburg quarterback Ty Sides was able to find pay dirt on the next series. Sides caught a 30 yard pass and ran in a 3 yard touchdown on the drive. Sides played most of the game at quarterback, but could line up anywhere.

However, Phillipsburg’s rally was short lived, as Hunter Morris took the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown. The Cardinals potent offense added another touchdown before intermission, building a 28-7 halftime lead.

The second half started with the two teams exchanging interceptions before Pedigo was able to cash in again. That made it 35-7. Both defenses allowed less than 22 points a game coming in, so few expected the game to turn into such a shootout.

Phillipsburg was able to put together a touchdown drive, which Hoisington matched, making the score 42-14. The rest of the night saw both teams exchange a lot of offense, but Hoisington was just too much, winning the scoreboard battle 56-28.

Ty Sides ran for 78 yards and a touchdown, passed for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns, and caught 4 balls for 42 yards. The versatile quarterback is just a junior. His favorite target was Kagan Keeten, who caught 10 balls for 189 yards and 2 scores.

Hoisington was paced by Pedigo who finished with 279 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 11 carries. Cade Mason added 157 yards and 2 touchdowns, while quarterback Mason Haxtun ran for a score and threw for another. The Hoisington defense was able to force 3 turnovers. The two teams combined had nearly 1,000 yards of offense.

Phillipsburg drops to 2-5 on the season. They’ll travel to Minneapolis next week for a game that will see the winner take the districts final playoff spot.

Hoisington remains undefeated at 7-0 and will likely remain the top-ranked team in 2A. They’ll look to complete a perfect season when they hit the road for a tough match-up with Norton.

Chiefs QB Mahomes expected to miss 4-6 weeks

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes escaped significant ligament damage when he dislocated his right kneecap and there is optimism the reigning NFL MVP could be back on the field in about a month.

Mahomes had an MRI exam Friday that showed the ligaments were intact, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team was still sorting through the results and putting together a timetable for his return.

The Chiefs play Green Bay a week from Sunday, then face the Vikings and Titans before a Monday night matchup against Tennessee on Nov. 18. The Chiefs (5-2) have their bye the following week, so it is possible they hold Mahomes out until their game against Oakland on Dec. 1.

“The kid had the MRI and we don’t have all the information. That’s what I can give you,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday. “Once we get the information, we can give you everything that kind of happened and what’s going on down the road. The whole deal.”

Mahomes was hurt during the Chiefs’ 30-6 win in Denver on Thursday night while sneaking for first down on fourth-and-short deep in Broncos territory. Everyone jumped up from the pile but Mahomes, who quickly reached for his right knee as trainers rushed onto the field.

Physicians used what is called a reduction maneuver to guide the patella back into place, and Mahomes was helped to his feet and shooed away a waiting cart. As players from both teams gathered to pat him on the back, Mahomes limped off the field and to the locker room with little assistance.

Mahomes was only in the X-ray room for a couple minutes before he was ruled out.

The Chiefs led 13-6 when Mahomes left and journeyman quarterback Matt Moore, who was signed just before the season when backup Chad Henne broke his ankle, finished the game. Moore wound up going 10 of 19 for 117 yards, a good chunk of it coming on a 57-yard scoring strike to Tyreek Hill.

“It’s hard to do, really the whole thing he’s done, coming in late to us,” Reid said. “Then it’s hard to be a relief pitcher. He’s done it before. There’s a certain way to prep for that and he understands that. It paid off for him. The best part is we didn’t have to change up a lot of things. The hard thing is if the guy comes in, the backup, and you have to change the whole offense.”

Reid indicated that Moore would be the starter going forward, and that rookie Kyle Shurmur — the son of longtime NFL coach Pat Shurmur — could be elevated from the practice squad as the backup.
“I shorted some throws and missed some stuff, some stuff I think the quarterback should hit,” Moore said, “but I kind of got into a little rhythm there as the game went on and Coach Reid had a nice flow going on with play calls and made me feel comfortable as we went on down.”

Henne is making progress and could be ready to come off injured reserve in Week 8.

Moore and the Chiefs have the benefit of a few extra days by virtue of playing Thursday night, though Reid said he was following through on his plan to give the team a few days off. The team will reconvene after the weekend before a Sunday night showdown against the Packers.

By that point, the Chiefs could have wide receiver Sammy Watkins back from a hamstring injury, and left tackle Eric Fisher (groin) and left guard Andrew Wylie (ankle) could be close to returning.

“Again, I don’t think we’ll have to change the whole offense,” Reid said, “but definitely that is part of being a coach and knowing your players. You want to put them in the best position for what they do best, then work on those things to get them better on the things they don’t do best.

“We’ll look at what (Moore) does best and talk and put together a good game plan.”

Patrick Mahomes hurts knee in Chiefs’ win over Broncos

DENVER (AP) – Reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes injured his right knee in a pileup near the goal line before his Kansas City teammates rallied around their fallen superstar for a 30-6 thrashing of Denver on Thursday night.

Backup Matt Moore threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs (5-2) had nine sacks, gave up a season-low 71 yards rushing and snapped a two-game skid in beating the Broncos (2-5) for the eighth straight time.

His balky left ankle heavily taped, Mahomes completed 10 of 11 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown before he got hurt on a successful sneak on fourth-and-inches at the Denver 5 early in the second quarter.

One by one, players peeled off the pile but when Mahomes didn’t get up , the stadium grew quiet, Broncos players knelt and some Chiefs stormed away in aguish as their quarterback ripped off his helmet and covered his face.

As players milled about nervously, the Chiefs’ medical personnel appeared to pop Mahomes’ right knee back in place before he was helped from the field and taken into the locker room. The Chiefs announced minutes later that Mahomes had a knee injury and wouldn’t return.

The Broncos had won two straight after a winless September and were hoping to turn the AFC West upside down by handling the Chiefs their third straight loss.

Coming in, the Chiefs were ranked 24th in the league with 11 sacks and they’d allowed an average of 190 yards rushing over their previous four games.

But the Chiefs sacked Joe Flacco a career-high eight times , drew three holding flags on grabby left tackle Garett Bolles, held Denver to 1-of-13 on third downs and benefited from Denver’s poor special teams play and curious calls by coach Vic Fangio that backfired spectacularly.

When Flacco did stay upright to deliver deep passes, they fell incomplete. Rookie tight end Noah Fant dropped three passes that would have totaled more than 100 yards.

At one point, Fox NFL analyst Troy Aikman exclaimed, “This is about as bad an offense as I’ve seen. I’m shocked there’s as many people still here at the game.”

There weren’t for very much longer as the fans streamed to the exits with the never-ending bungled plays by the Broncos, especially the porous O-line that was jeered by frustrated fans.

The Chiefs even sacked punter Colby Wadman, who had nowhere to throw the ball on a failed fake punt that gave Kansas City the ball at the Broncos 38 on the drive that ended with Mahomes’ injury.

After Mahomes got hurt, Moore couldn’t get the Chiefs into the end zone on three plays from the 3, and Harrison Butker’s 20-yard field goal gave KC a 13-6 lead.

Flacco, who was sacked five times and knocked down eight more times in 15 first-half drop-backs, was sack-stripped by linebacker Anthony Hutchins on the next series and linebacker Reggie Ragland scooped up the loose ball at the 5 and rumbled into the end zone for a 20-6 halftime lead.

Brandon McManus missed a 45-yard field goal that sailed well above the top of the right upright.

The Broncos scored first after getting a reprieve on a three-and-out when Frank Clark’s face mask gave Denver a first down and Royce Freeman took it in from a yard out seven plays later. But Fangio decided to take the extra point off the board and go for 2 when Alex Okafor was whistled for encroachment.

Instead of handing the ball off to Freeman again, Fangio had Phillip Lindsay, who’s about 50 pounds lighter, pound the ball up the middle and he was stuffed, leaving the Chiefs celebrating instead and the crowd no longer buzzing.

Their 6-0 lead was short-lived as Mahomes somehow escaped the clutches of Von Miller and fired a pass that safety Will Parks tipped but Mecole Hardman reigned in anyway before avoiding sidestepping safety Kareem Jackson for a 21-yard score .

Hardman added a 37-yard punt return that led to a 33-yard field goal.

Moore finished 10 of 19 for 117 yards.

INJURIES: Parks left the game with a hand injury and didn’t return and Broncos rookie linebacker Justin Hollins left with a knee injury.

CLAREMORE, Okla. – For the second time in the 2019 campaign, the Fort Hays State Tigers have defeated the Rogers State Hillcats in conference play. The first result, which occurred at home in Hays, was a 2-0 victory for FHSU. Thursday night’s match ended, 1-0, in favor of the black and gold.

The majority of the rematch was filled with back and forth play. At the conclusion of the match, the Tigers held 52-percent of the possession, with a large portion of that number being controlled in the midfield.

Meanwhile, the Hillcats spent a large portion of their 90 minutes in the attacking half of the field.

Although Rogers State pressured the Tigers with 11 shots throughout the match, they were unable to find the back of the net due to a strong defensive presence from Fort Hays State’s back line. Each of the four defensive players (Mariano Benitez, Alec Bevis, Moritz Walther, and Joey McCain) played all 90 minutes in the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Kieran Brown collected two saves en route to his second career clean sheet.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Alonso Rodriguez struck Fort Hays’ eighth shot of the match. From a few yards inside the 18-yard box, the junior midfielder slotted the ball in the lower right-hand corner of the goal, registering his third of the season.

Almost two minutes later, Rogers State’s James Connor attempted to equalize the scoresheet, but had his shot ring off the crossbar.

Now 8-3-1, FHSU will battle against conference foe, Northeastern State University on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers and the RiverHawks clashed in Hays earlier in the season when an overtime goal by Santiago Agudelo sealed the result for the black and gold. Their second matchup this season is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Seven defensive takeaways propels Hays to a win in Buhler

The Hays and Buhler defenses took over the Thursday night show in Buhler during the first half.  Hays punted after just three plays to start the game and Buhler drove down to the Hays seven yard line but was turned away on 4th and 1.  The Indians opened the next drive with a 40 yard run to midfield but stalled following a 17 yard loss on a snap and fumble recovery.

A Hayden Brown punt rolled out of bounds at the 11 yard line.  Three plays later Tucker Veatch intercepted a pass to set up the Indians at the 20 yard line.  The Indians pushed down to the six yard line but could not take advantage of two Crusader red zone penalties and settled for a 23 yard field goal from Matt Goodale and a 3-0 lead.

Buhler fumbled their next drive away but Hays could not score with a drive starting in Buhler territory.  Following punts from both teams the Crusaders hooked up for a 46 yard pass play that set up the game’s first touchdown.  Bradley Neill rolled out to on a four yard pass to Austin Gentry who just broke the goal line for the score and 7-3 lead.

Each team turned the ball over in the final three minutes of the half.  Hays High on an interception in the end zone and Buhler fumbling when Hunter Harris punched the ball out and Trey Adams recovered the ball.  Hays tried to score in the final 31 seconds but got to the 19 yard line before time in the first half ran out.

Highlights

The Indian defense never did yield in the second half.  Hays intercepted four more passes with the fourth providing some breathing room for Hays.  Tucker Veach grabbed his second interception of the night and raced to the end zone for a 17-7 lead with 7:52 remaining.

Buhler did threaten in the second half.  The Crusaders opened the second half with drive to the Hays 28 yard line but was sacked on third down by Da’Vontai Robinson.  Buhler also drove down to the Hays red zone late in the fourth quarter trailing by ten.  The Hays defense was backed up to their own goal line.  With under two minutes remaining Buhler took a timeout to set up a fourth and goal play from the two yard line.  Gavin Meyers almost intercepted a short pass by plucking the ball off the quarterback’s hand.

Hays held on to a 17-7 victory.

Coach Tony Crough

The Hays defense forced seven total turnovers.  Fumble recoveries by Trey Adams and Gavin Nutting.  Hunter Harris forced the fumble that Adams recovered.  Tucker Veach took away two passes while Gavin Meyers, Tavian Creamer, and Gavin Nutting each picked off pass as well.

Hays improves to 3-4 on the year while Buhler falls to 5-2.

The Indians return home for Senior Night next Friday to take on Salina Central.
