Hill, Mahomes lead Chiefs to victory over Chargers

CARSON, Calif. (AP) – Tyreek Hill scored three touchdowns, Patrick Mahomes passed for his first four NFL scores and the Kansas City Chiefs opened the season with a 38-28 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Hill had a 91-yard punt return for a score and a 58-yard TD reception during the first quarter before adding a 1-yard reception for a score in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Hill also had 169 yards on seven receptions, which is the second-most yards by a Chiefs receiver in an opener, according to Pro Football Reference. Carlos Carson had 173 yards receiving against New Orleans in 1985.

Mahomes, who moved into the starting spot after Alex Smith was traded to Washington in the offseason, was 15 of 27 for 256 yards as the Chiefs extended their winning streak over the Chargers to nine.

After the Chargers got the opening kickoff but went three-and-out, Hill took Drew Kaser’s punt 91 yards for a touchdown just 1 minute, 57 seconds into the game. The third-year receiver fielded the punt near the right hash mark, but quickly found an opening up the left sideline.

It was Hill’s fourth punt return for a touchdown in 32 games and the Chiefs’ league-leading seventh since 2013.

After Caleb Sturgis’ 45-yard field goal got the Chargers on the board, Mahomes threw his first touchdown pass in the NFL, connecting with Hill for 58 yards. Hill caught the pass at the Chargers 47 and eluded a diving tackle by Jahleel Addae as he found a seam up the left sideline.

Los Angeles would get within two at 14-12 with 7:47 remaining in the second quarter on Philip Rivers’ 13-yard touchdown pass to Austin Ekeler. The Chargers were unable to tie as their 2-point attempt failed.

Kansas City would take control in the third quarter on a pair of TD passes by Mahomes passes to make it 31-12. He had a 1-yard shovel pass to De’Anthony Thomas and then had a 36-yard score to Anthony Sherman after Ron Parker intercepted a pass by Rivers at the Chiefs 14.

A 20-yard TD reception by Keenan Allen and 2-point conversion catch by Antonio Gates brought the Chargers within 11, but JJ Jones’ fumble of a punt at the Chargers 2 and subsequent Hill touchdown made the deficit too much to overcome.

Rivers had a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, a 20-yarder to Allen and 4 yards to Tyrell Williams.

Rivers was 34 of 51 for 424 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Allen had eight receptions for 108 yards and Melvin Gordon nine for 102.

INJURIES

Chargers: RT Joe Barksdale was carted off after injuring his right knee during the first quarter and did not return. He missed five games last season due to a turf toe injury.

UP NEXT

Chiefs: Continue their road trip next Sunday at Pittsburgh. Kansas City has dropped three of its last four to the Steelers in the regular season.

Chargers: Travel to Buffalo next Sunday in the first of two straight road games. The Chargers have won three straight and five of the last six against Buffalo.

Astudillo hits game-ending home run, Twins beat Royals

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Willians Astudillo hit a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave the Minnesota Twins a 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Max Kepler doubled off Jason Hammel (2-13) with two outs in the Twins ninth. Astudillo then hit a drive deep to left field for his third home run of the season.

Trevor Hildenberger (4-3) got two outs to pick up the win.

Adalberto Mondesi homered for the Royals, who were held to three hits on the day.

A day after Kansas City rookie Jorge Lopez took a perfect game into the ninth, the Twins ended the suspense early with a run in the second inning. Robbie Grossman led off with a double and scored on Ehire Adrianza’s single.

Royals starter Ian Kennedy made his first appearance after missing two months with a strained oblique. He ended up throwing 93 pitches over six innings, allowing one run on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Minnesota starter Chase De Jong made his Twins debut with four scoreless innings, walking four and striking out five. He arrived from Seattle in a trade for reliever Zach Duke on July 30.

Zack Littell followed De Jong for the Twins and gave up Mondesi’s tying home run in the sixth but was otherwise sharp, allowing just two runners in 3 1/3 innings.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: 3B Miguel Sano missed his fourth straight game with a lower left leg contusion.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Jakob Junis (8-12, 4.32 ERA) takes the mound on Monday night as the Royals open a three-game series at home against the White Sox. Lucas Giolito (10-10, 5.85) will start for Chicago.

Twins: RHP Kyle Gibson (7-12, 3.74) will start for the Twins as they host the Yankees for the opener of a three-game series on Monday. New York will counter with LHP J.A. Happ (14-6, 3.90).

Tigers women’s soccer settles for tie with ThunderWolves

PUEBLO, Colo. – The 90 minutes of regulation was not enough to decide on a winner on Sunday, leaving the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team to settle in a draw against CSU-Pueblo, 2-2. The ThunderWolves, who were previously untouched, dip their record to 3-0-1 while the Tigers move to 1-2-1 overall.

The Tigers gained control first as senior Vianei Sanchez captured her first goal of the season off a scramble in front of the goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead early in the game as she capitalized on a solo shot in the 13th minute. This goal would hold steady as the lone point for either team until the 41st minute when CSU-Pueblo’s Hannah Andresen tied up the match at 1-1. The first 45 minutes saw the Tigers only attempting five shots compared to the ThunderWolves 11.

Not long after the beginning of the second half, Mackenzie Bean sealed her second goal of the season in the 50th minute to put the ThunderWolves ahead at 2-1. CSU-Pueblo seemed to be maintaining the pace of the game and hopeful of picking up their fourth win of the season, but Sanchez had other plans. With just 44 seconds remaining in regulation, Sanchez earned an assist from Darby Hirsch and netted the ball to even up the match from inside the box, eventually forcing overtime.

Through two ten-minute overtimes, neither team could get back on top, ending the match locked at 2-2. The ThunderWolves held the advantage in the game in shots, attempting 25 over Fort Hays State’s 15, with the shots on goal margin going 9-13 in favor of CSU-Pueblo. The fouls were frequent in the 110 minutes played with the Tigers picking up 15 and the ThunderWolves being called on 10.

Megan Kneefel continues to be a strong force within the net for the Tigers as she collected 11 saves on the day. Kneefel now owns a record of 1-2-1 with 28 total saves through four matches. Alexa Eastep also notches a tie to her record as she capture seven saves of her own against the Tigers.

The Tigers will make their first home appearance of the season as they play host to two matches this upcoming weekend. First up, FHSU faces off against MIAA foe Emporia State Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Tigers welcome another conference opponent in Nebraska-Kearney for a 1 p.m. showdown. Both matches will remain non-conference.

FHSU men’s soccer defeats Roadrunners

HAYS, Kan. – The No. 15 Fort Hays State men’s soccer team produced four goals to defeat Metro State 4-2 on Sunday (Sept. 9). The Tigers improved to 3-1 overall on the season, while the Roadrunners dip to 1-3 on the year.

Tiger striker Santiago Agudelo provided two goals in the contest to help the Tigers stave off the Roadrunners second half surge.

Fort Hays State caught fire in the early-going as Agudelo put the Tigers on the board with his second goal of the season in the fifth minute of the match. Sergio Villalba fed Agudelo with a free kick from 25 yards out, while Santiago beat the keeper for the header goal.

Just 2:16 later, Luis Torres caught a rebound and placed the ball in the back of the net for his first goal of the year pushing the Tigers further in front with a 2-0 lead in the eighth minute of the contest.

The Tigers and Roadrunners settled down into a defensive battle for the next 34 minutes before Caden Frank came off the bench with assists from Ross Boyd and Nathan De La Hoya to score his first goal of the season and put the Tigers out in front 3-0 in the 42nd minute. The score would hold until halftime.

Agudelo netted his second goal of the match and third of the season in the 53rd minute after Tobias Patino found Abdoulaye Cisse, who then found Agudelo on a touch pass that he flipped over the Roadrunner goalie James Tanner’s head to give the Tigers the 4-0 advantage early in the second half.

Metro State used a second half surge to cut the deficit in half with two goals of their own in the 64th and 86th minutes. The Roadrunners took advantage of the Tigers only having ten men on the field after a red card halfway through the second half.

FHSU outshot Metro State 17-12 as well as a 5-1 edge in assists. Cullen Fisch earned the victory in goal for the Tigers, improving to 3-1 on the year.

The Tigers are back in action on Thursday as they make the trip to San Diego, Calif. as they take on #25 Point Loma University for a 6:30 p.m. CT/4:30 p.m. PT start.

TMP football earns first win of season

HAYS – The TMP Marian football team earned their first win of the season Friday night, 14-7 over the Ellis Railroaders at Lewis Field.

Both offenses struggled early with the Monarchs scoring the only touchdown of the first half with 24 second left in the second quarter. TMP put together a 12-play 66 yard drive that was capped off by a 12 yard touchdown pass from Carson Jacobs to Colby Dreiling. TMP led 6-0 at halftime.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter but the Monarchs took advantage of a short field at the end of the quarter and drove 48 yards in nine plays and took a 12-0 lead with 11:55 to play on a six yard Kaleb Hagans touchdown run. The two point conversion gave the Monarchs a 14-0 lead.

Hagans finished with 167 yards and one touchdown on 28 carries.

After the TMP touchdown Ellis took the ball right back down the field and scored on a Cade Lewis four yard touchdown run cutting the lead to 14-7 with 8:21 to play.

On the Monarchs next possession they put together a 10 play drive that took more than 5:00 off the clock. The TMP defense then forced Ellis to turn the ball over on downs securing the TMP 14-7 win.

Final pass falls incomplete as Hays loses in Great Bend

Statistically the Hays High Indians controlled the first half of their game in Great Bend on Friday night.  Hays went for 178 yards while allowing just 69 to the Panthers.  The score though had the Indians with just a one point lead at 7-6.  Nobody threatened to score until late in the first half.  Following Dalton Miller’s second interception of the half, the Panthers took a short field to the end zone.  A three play 44 yard drive was capped by a four yard run by quarterback Koy Brack.  The extra point was blocked by the Indians.

The score came with 2:41 left in the first half.  Hays scored just over a minute later.  After a touch back on the kickoff, Hays moved 80 yards in three plays.  Palmer Hutchison fended off a sack, reversed field and found Mason Ibarra behind the defense for a 49 yard touchdown.  Cole Schroeder’s extra point gave the Indians a 7-6 halftime lead.

Highlights

Great Bend added nine points in the second half.  Dalton Miller broke off a 46 yard run in the third quarter for a touchdown.  The score put the Panthers on top 12-7 after a two point conversion failed with 3:04 left in the quarter.  The Great Bend defense stifled the Indian offense for most of the second half allowing just 85 yards.

Great Bend pushed their lead to eight following a 25 yard field goal from Dani Franco for a 15-7 lead.  On the drive Great Bend converted on third and six, their only successful conversion of the night.  Hays also helped keep the drive alive by jumping offside on fourth and two.

Hays did get one last drive in an effort to tie the game.  The Indians converted on third and fifteen and fourth and ten to keep a last gasp of breath going.  The Indians drove to the 28 yard line and had one chance for a hail mary that sailed just wide.

Coach Tony Crough

Hays falls to 0-2 on the season and is 0-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Great Bend is now 2-0 and 1-0 in conference play.  Hays totaled 263 yards while Great Bend had 274.  The Panthers total included 205 yards in the second half, Hays had 85.

The Indians get play their first home game of the season when hosting 1-1 Liberal.  The Redskins lost to Wichita North 13-6.
