Royals beat Blue Jays after long delay to split series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Lucas Duda homered, Rosell Herrera had three hits and the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2 after a long rain delay Thursday night to split their four-game series.

Royals relievers Brian Flynn, Kevin McCarthy, Brandon Maurer and Wily Peralta shut down the Blue Jays on three hits over the final five innings. Flynn (3-3) picked up the win with a scoreless inning.

Kansas City took the lead with a three-run fourth highlighted by Jorge Bonifacio’s RBI triple.

Toronto starter Sam Gaviglio (2-6) failed to make it through five innings for the eighth time in his past 13 starts. He allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Gaviglio came unraveled after a balk call and a delay of more than five minutes in the fourth. He attempted a pickoff throw, but the ball slipped out of his hand.

After the umpires huddled, Herrera was awarded second base. There was also a replay review to confirm the balk, which took 4 minutes, 1 second.

After the long delay, Gaviglio yielded three straight run-producing hits.

Danny Jansen’s sacrifice fly in the second scored Teoscar Hernandez with the first Toronto run.

Kendrys Morales singled home Justin Smoak in the fourth with the final Blue Jays run.

Glenn Sparkman, who was making his first big league start, was removed after four innings and 75 pitches. He gave up two runs and four hits.

Rain delayed the start for 2 hours, 14 minutes – the third straight day that bad weather held up the first pitch.

MATIAS’ SEASON OVER

OF Seuly Matias, who leads the minor leagues with 31 homers for Class A Burlington, went on the disabled list with a cut thumb. “It was an accident with the bus baggage door, just a freak accident, putting his bag in the bus on the way to Hagerstown,” Royals director of operations Alec Zumwalt said. “He sliced his thumb. It’s to the point where we’re just going to stop him for the season and get him ready for the instructional league. He’s not a guy we’re going to rush back, and make sure he’s at 100 percent.” Matias went 2 for 3 with a home run in the All-Star Futures Game last month in Washington.

NOT CLUTCH

Royals 3B Hunter Dozier is 4 for 46 (.087) with runners in scoring position. He has come to bat with 65 men in scoring position and has six RBIs with only one extra-base hit. “It’s not really conducive to scoring runs, but that’s not going to stop me from playing him and letting him work through that,” manager Ned Yost said.

ROSTER MOVE

The Royals sent minor league LHP Kelvin Gonzalez to the Texas Rangers for a $250,000 international bonus allocation. Gonzalez, 20, was 0-2 with a 4.19 ERA and one save with short-season Class A Burlington in the Kansas City organization.

Flax named interim athletic director at Ulysses

TMP-Marian courtesy photo

ULYSSES — Longtime Thomas More Prep-Marian athletic director and coach Gene Flax has joined the staff of Ulysses USD 214 as interim athletic director.

Flax will fill the position left vacant after the unexpected death of athletic director Jason Kenny, who died in July at age 47.

“Gene had reached out just offering his condolences,” said Ulysses Superintendent David Younger. “Him and Jason had worked together in their capacities, and he knew our high school principal.”

Flax offered his assistance and, after an effort to replace Kenney internally did not work out, the district reached out.

Younger said Flax interviewed Saturday, was appointed by the USD 214 Board of Education on Wednesday and arrived Wednesday night to “hit the ground running.”

Flax, who most recently served as AD at Russell, will serve as interim AD for one year, Younger said, with the search for a permanent replacement ongoing.

“Of course, Gene is well thought of throughout the state of Kansas in his role at TMP, a sterling reputation,” Younger said. “He was happy to help us out for the year.”

Flax joined the staff at TMP-Marian in 1996. In addition to being the school’s athletic director, he was the head football coach for 14 years guiding the Monarchs to the state playoffs twice. He also served an an assistant coach for the Kansas Shrine Bowl. Flax was also spent time as the Monarchs head track and field coach as well as an assistant. He also taught P.E., weightlifting as well as drivers’ education.

70 years after Babe Ruth’s death, fans still flock to grave

Shutterstock.com

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. (AP) — Amid the serene graves at Gate of Heaven Cemetery sits the one where visitors leave baseballs and bats instead of bouquets, tributes to a baseball superstar who still outshines others seven decades after his death.

It’s the resting place of Babe Ruth, the indelible slugger and larger-than-life personality who died Aug. 16, 1948.

Considered by many the greatest player in baseball history, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox legend set home run records — 60 in one season, 714 in his career — that stood for decades. He remains one of the sport’s defining figures.

If someone knows one name in baseball, it’s likely his: the Sultan of Swat, the Bambino, the Babe, or, officially, George Herman (Babe) Ruth.

Ruth began as a left-handed pitcher and became a slugging outfielder, playing for 22 major league seasons before retiring in 1935. In his prime, he would hit more home runs than some entire teams, and he was known for his flair on and off the field.

Former President George H.W. Bush once wrote that although he got to attend many enjoyable events as president and vice president, meeting Ruth at Yale University while Bush was a student and baseball team captain there “topped them all.”

After Ruth died of throat cancer at 53, tens of thousands of fans came to pay respects as his body laid in state for two days at the original Yankee Stadium, dubbed “The House That Ruth Built.” People jammed the streets around St. Patrick’s Cathedral during his funeral.

At his grave at the suburban cemetery owned by St. Patrick’s trustees, visitors over the years have left countless bats, balls, caps and T-shirts, as well as beer, whiskey, cigars and hot dogs. Someone delivered an entire sausage-pepper-and-onion pizza to honor a man known for his prodigious appetites, field superintendent John Garro said.

Another time, he said, someone asked — unsuccessfully — to sleep over in the cemetery in the run-up to Boston’s 2004 World Series win. It ended an 86-year drought that fans called “the curse of the Bambino,” supposedly cast upon the Red Sox for sending Ruth to the Yankees. The grave was so heavily visited during Boston’s 2004 World Series run that two cemetery workers were assigned specifically to watch over it, Garro said.

The tributes proliferate quickly enough that workers tidy up every other week and do a more thorough clear-out every couple of months.

Still, “we like to keep some stuff there,” Garro said, “because it keeps the whole thing going.”

Granderson’s grand slam leads Jays past Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam, Marco Estrada pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Wednesday night.

Jorge Lopez (0-2), who was making his Royals debut after being acquired July 27 from Milwaukee as part of the Mike Moustakas trade, threw a 2-0 fastball that Granderson drove over the Royals’ right-field bullpen gate with two outs in the fourth inning.

It was Granderson’s 10th career grand slam and his second this year, both against the Royals. The first was April 18 in Toronto. He has 19 home runs and 50 RBIs in 106 games against Kansas City.

Royals pitchers have yielded a major league-leading 10 grand slams.

Kevin Pillar singled home Teoscar Hernandez with the first run of the fourth and contributed an RBI single in the second for the Blue Jays, who have won three of four.

Lopez was removed after 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, two walks and a hit batter.

Estrada (6-9) gave up four runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings to pick up his first career victory at Kauffman Stadium.

Salvador Perez homered twice in the loss, his fifth career multi-homer game.

Perez connected in the first with Whit Merrifield aboard and led off the fourth with his 21st home run. Perez has hit at least 20 homers in four consecutive seasons, joining .John Mayberry, Steve Balboni, Bo Jackson and Mike Sweeney among the Royals to accomplish that feat.

Brett Phillips tripled in the seventh and scored on Alcides Escobar’s two-out single for the other run off Estrada.

Ken Giles allowed a pinch-hit homer to Ryan O’Hearn but still earned his 15th save in as many chances and his third with the Blue Jays.

Rain delayed the start of the game by 15 minutes.

HE’S THAT FAST

Adalberto Mondesi stole three bases, including one when he was picked off first base, on Tuesday. Royals manager Ned Yost compared Mondesi’s acceleration to former Kansas City speedsters Jarrod Dyson and Terrance Gore. “It’s up there,” Yost said. “It’s very easy, quick, hard speed. It’s just, boom, he’s gone. It’s like the Road Runner. You expect a little pillow of dust following him. He’s that fast.”

ROSTER MOVES

Blue Jays: LHP Tim Mayza was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. LHP Thomas Pannone was optioned to the Bisons.

Royals: RHP Blaine Boyer, who yielded a two-run eighth inning homer on Tuesday in a 6-5 loss to Toronto, was released. Boyer had a 12.05 ERA in 21 relief appearances. … The Royals sent Gore to the Cubs for cash considerations. In parts of four seasons with Kansas City, Gore was primarily used as a pinch runner, stealing 21 of 25 bases and scoring 24 runs, but went 0-for-11 in 49 games.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez (bruised right index finger) made a rehab start for Class-A Dunedin in the Class A Florida State League, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits, while walking four and striking out three. He threw 35 strikes in 74 pitches.

Royals: OF Brian Goodwin (left groin strain) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Omaha.

“I thought we had a really good day. We tried to to pair the teams pretty evenly” Wood-Atkins said. “We wanted to see some matchups, middles versus middles, setters versus setters and they did well.”

With over half of her roster either freshman or sophomores, Wood-Atkins will be relying on some of the younger talent this season.

“Our young ones are going to have to step up but I think that they have the ability to” Wood-Atkins said. “We’re going take our bumps, they’re going to have their days. They’re just getting used to the speed still.”

The Tigers open their season a week from Friday at the Oklahoma-Panhandle State Tournament.

Pillar homers in 8th to lift Blue Jays over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to lift the Toronto Blue Jays over the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Blaine Boyer (2-1) retired his first two batters before walking Aledmys Diaz and backing Pillar into an 0-2 count. Pillar hit the next pitch over the wall down the left field line.

Ken Giles worked a perfect ninth for his 14th save and second with the Blue Jays since being acquired from Houston on July 30.

The Royals answered with three runs in third, which included Perez’s run-producing double and Whit Merrifield and Alex Gordon adding RBI singles.

The Monarchs will have a different look when they kick off the season later this month against Smith Center.

Last year the Monarchs offense relied heavily on the passing game but finished just 3-6. Bowen said Monday they are going rely much more on their rushing attack.

ROYALS DEFENSE SHINES

The Royals played their 13th straight errorless game, extending their club record. They have not committed an error in 120 innings.

“One thing we’ve consistently done this year is play defense,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “The same tune we were playing in the championship years. I’m pleased with the way we’ve played defensively. It’s a real struggle when you’re not winning games and playing sloppy defense. At least defensively, we’re giving ourselves a chance.”

Their last error was July 29 in the first inning at Yankee Stadium.

Hays High football holds first practice

The 2018 football season got under way on Monday as the Hays High Indians worked through a rain soaked afternoon before being chased of the field by lightning late in practice.  First year head coach Tony Crough had 74 in pads for the first practice.  Crough begins his fourth year total as a head coach.

Coach Tony Crough

Crough says the goal in this first week is to figure out who will play where within the schemes he has brought to the program.  The position the players are at over the first few days of practice may not be where they continue to play as the preseason moves along.  Crough is also in charge of the offense.  Former Fort Hays State football player Layton Hickel is the defensive coordinator.  Overall the program features ten coaches to help the team.

Hays makes a return to 5A as the smallest school in the classification.  The regular season has eight games on the schedule with the ninth week scheduled through the first round of the playoffs which each team qualifies for.  The Indians’ first game is August 31st in Junction City.

Hays native Delton named captain of Wildcat football team

K-State Athletics

Delton – KSU Athletics

MANHATTAN – Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder announced Monday that Dalton Risner and Hays native Alex Delton will serve as captains for the 2018 season, while Colby Moore will be an honorary special teams captain and Kendall Adams, Duke Shelley, Trey Dishon, Reggie Walker, Skylar Thompson and Alex Barnes will be co-captains.

Risner is a captain for a third-straight season, joined only by Brooks Barta (1990-92), Mark Simoneau (1997-99), Collin Klein (2010-12) and B.J. Finney (2012-14) to hold that distinction. The remaining captains and co-captains were elected to those leadership positions for the first time in their careers.

A product of Wiggins, Colo., Risner is coming off an All-American season when he was named to the first team by Pro Football Focus and the second team by CBSSports.com. A career 38-game starter – including his last 25 at right tackle – Risner led the Wildcats to a tie for third place in school history in rushing yards per carry (4.98) last season, while they finished seventh in program history with 2,584 total rushing yards.

Delton, Hays, played in seven games in 2017 with four starts, throwing for 637 yards and three touchdowns on 49-of-85 aim, while rushing for 500 yards on 100 carries with eight scores. He came off the bench in the Cactus Bowl to rush for a K-State bowl record 158 yards and three scores en route to Offensive MVP accolades.

Moore, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship following the 2017 season, has been a valuable member of all special teams units throughout his career. He played in every game as a junior, tying for team-high honors with six tackles on kickoff coverage. A native of Argyle, Texas, Moore is a two-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 performer.

K-State hosts South Dakota on Saturday, September 1, inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game kicks off at 6:10 p.m., and will be televised globally on ESPN3. The Wildcats then host SEC foe Mississippi State at 11 a.m., on September 8, in a game televised on ESPN, while they wrap up non-conference play on September 15, by hosting UTSA at 3 p.m., on FSN.

K-State begins Big 12 play on the road for the 18th time in the 23-year history of the Big 12 and the second time in the last three years at West Virginia when the Wildcats travel to Morgantown, West Virginia, on September 22. The Wildcats’ Big 12 home opener comes against Texas on September 29.
