JA Happ dominant in winning Yankees debut over Royals

NEW YORK (AP) – J.A. Happ made the midseason impact the Yankees hoped for, pitching one-run ball over six innings to win his New York debut 6-3 over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Three days after New York acquired the 35-year-old left-hander from Toronto for infielder Brandon Drury and outfield prospect Billy McKinney, Happ took a shutout into the fifth before Salvador Perez’s opposite-field home run into the Yankees bullpen in right-center. Happ (11-6) struck out two and walked one, and the first-time All-Star ended a four-start winless streak.

New York (67-37) began the day 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Boston and with just 16 wins in its last 31 games. The Yankees sought a boost similar to the one provided by David Cone, who made his Yankees debut exactly 23 years earlier after his acquisition from Toronto and became a key cog in the team that reached that year’s playoffs and won four World Series titles in the following five seasons. Happ joined a rotation that includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray.

“I feel like in a lot of ways he’s been underrated over the years,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I feel like he’s more in that upper tier than people want to acknowledge.”

Aaron Hicks hit a two-run homer in the first off the screen attached to the right-field foul pole, a drive off Burch Smith (1-2). Hicks also doubled, singled and walked for the Yankees, who took three over four against the woeful Royals (32-73), who traded star third baseman Mike Moustakas to Milwaukee on Friday.

Brett Phillips, one of those prospects, started in his Kansas City debut and made a leaping catch at the top of the right-field wall – with his eyes closed as the ball landed in his glove – to rob Austin Romine of a possible three-run homer in the fourth.

Hunter Dozier homered off Chad Green in the seventh and Rosell Herrera went deep against David Robertson leading off the eighth, the first home run of his big league career. Aroldis Chapman struck out three straight batters for his 28th save in 29 chances, his 20th in a row.

Kansas City lost for the 12th time in 15 games at Yankee Stadium, and for the 18th time in 24 games against the Yankees. After beating Detroit last week for his first big league win since 2013, Smith gave up five runs, five hits and three hits in four-plus innings.

Miguel Andujar added a two-out, run-scoring single in the fourth, and a successful replay challenge led to two more runs and a 5-0 lead in the fifth. Gleyber Torres hit a bases-loaded bouncer to second baseman Whit Merrifield, who reached to tag Hicks running from first and then threw to first to retire Torres. Second base umpire Chad Whitson called Hicks out, but replays showed Hicks swerved slightly to the infield side while remaining in the baseline and avoiding Merrifield’s glove.

Greg Bird followed with a bouncer to second, but Merrifield was in short right field and had a long sprint in to reach the ball. The slow-footed Bird smiled as he crossed first with a run-scoring infield hit.

Giancarlo Stanton had a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

SEATS

A crowd of 46,192 was New York’s 20th home sellout, matching 2011 for the most at the new Yankee Stadium.

Hays Monarchs lose to Iola in AA State semifinals

SABETHA – Iola took advantage of an early miscue and a solid pitching performance as they eliminated the Hays Monarchs in the semifinals of the AA American Legion State Tournament Saturday.

After the two teams had played scoreless through two Iola got a leadoff single in the top of the third inning. Following a sacrifice bunt the runner stole third and came in to score when the pickoff throw to third by catcher Creighton Renz sailed into the outfield for an error. That put Iola up 1-0.

They added a second run on an RBI single to do up 2-0.

After the Monarchs threatened but failed to score in the bottom of the inning Iola added three more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

The Hays offense woke up a bit in the bottom of the sixth scoring three times with Renz, Adam Gottschalk and Cole Zimmerman all driving in runs with RBI singles to cut the deficit to 5-3.

But Iola answered right back with three of the own in the top of the seventh on their way to the 8-3 win.

Ryan Post post-game interview

Zimmerman suffered the loss for the Monarchs, he allowed five runs, four earned on five hits in three innings. He struck out one and walked two.

Zimmerman was 2 for 3 at the plate and drove in a run. He finished with seven RBI’s at the state tournament. Gottschalk was also 2 for 3 with an RBI in the game.

The Monarchs finish the summer 17-6-1.

Monarchs lose to Marysville; finish runner-up in pool play

SABETHA – With both teams already locked into Saturday’s bracket round at the AA State American Legion Tournament Marysville beat the Hays Monarchs 6-3 in their final pool play game Friday.

The Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a Cole Zimmerman RBI single.

Marysville answered with three runs in the third inning, taking advantage of two walks and an error to take a 4-2 lead.

Marysville also scored single runs fifth and seventh on their way to the 6-3 win.

After the first inning the Monarchs’ offense was held in check until the seventh when they scored a run on an Adam Gottschalk sacrifice fly. But they left the bases loaded.

Carlos Schwindt was the tough-luck loser for the Monarchs. He allowed five runs, but just one earned over five innings. He struck out three and walked four.

Trent Mayo and Eston Brown each collected a pair of hits for the Monarchs.

Hays drops to 17-5-1 on the summer. They finished 2-1 in pool play and will take on Iola in the 10:00 a.m. game Saturday.

Marysville will take on Silver Lake at 12:15 p.m.

The two winners will play for the state championship Saturday evening.

Hays Eagles defeat Emporia, Miss Out on Bracket Play at State

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion watched their season end from the stands Friday night as the Nickerson Panthers run-ruled the Topeka Senators 10-1 after four innings and advanced to Saturday’s AAA state semi-finals.

Prior to the heartbreak, was a rollercoaster of emotions in a 3-2 thrilling victory as Hays scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to hand Emporia Post 5 their first loss of the tournament. Coming into Friday evening’s game, Hays was 1-1 in pool play and desperately needing a win to keep their chances alive of advancing to Saturday’s semi-finals.

Head Coach Dustin Schumacher

Emporia started the game with a 1-0 lead after Cole Moore hit an RBI single to bring home Beau Baumgardner in the top of the first inning. Both teams would be scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Hays tied it up on an error by Emporia third baseman Sawyer Slayden that scored Trey Riggs from third to tie the game at 1-1.

After a scoreless fifth, Emporia’s Cole Moore came through again with an RBI single to score Slayden, making it 2-1 Emporia in the top of the sixth. Hays pitcher Cole Murphy, who went all seven innings in the victory, got three straight outs in the top of the seventh to give Hays one final chance at tying or winning the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Brett Herrman lead off the bottom of the seventh pinch-hitting for Willie Sennett and reached base on balls before moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Dawson Harman. Brady Kreutzer hit a single to move Herrman to third. Jamison Martin then hit a big-time RBI single to score Herrman and tie the game at 2-2. Emporia intentionally walked Palmer Hutchison to load the bases with one out for Trey Riggs. Riggs hit a ground ball and Emporia got Kreutzer out at home on a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning. Cody Peterson would come up next and hit a ground ball at the Emporia second baseman who mis-played the ball and Martin came home on the error to give Hays the victory.

Murphy went a complete game and got the win, throwing 99 pitches and giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking four.

Martin was 2-4 with an RBI and run scored. Harman was 1-1 with a sacrifice and walk. Hays as a team was 3-23 at the plate with one RBI and seven walks and left five on base. The defense committed two errors.

Despite going 2-1 in pool play and defeating Emporia Post 5, the Eagles needed Nickerson (who beat Hays Wednesday) to either lose or give up five runs to Topeka in the late game Friday night. Instead, Nickerson won and advances to the semi-finals with Emporia, Salina and Newton. Hays’ season ends at 34-6-1.

Royals lose opener to Yankees as NY star gets injured

NEW YORK (AP) – Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was hit on his right wrist by a pitch and forced to leave early Thursday night, overshadowing New York’s 7-2 romp past the Kansas City Royals.

The Yankees said Judge was seen by a team doctor at the stadium and taken to a hospital for an MRI.  The Yankees said Judge had a chip fracture and that no surgery has been recommended.  The team estimated it would be about three weeks before Judge could swing the bat in a game.

Normally an All-Star outfielder, Judge was the designated hitter. He winced when he was stung by a fastball from Jakob Junis in the first inning, got an infield hit the next time up and then was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the fourth.

On a busy day for the Yankees, Sonny Gray (8-7) pitched five shutout innings to win three straight starts for the first time since last July. He exited soon after getting nicked in the pitching hand by a hard grounder.

Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer for New York, which began the day 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Boston. Center fielder Aaron Hicks threw out Alex Gordon at the plate to end the game as Gordon tried to score from second on a single.

Before the game, the Yankees obtained Toronto left-hander J.A. Happ in a trade for infielder Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney. Also, ace reliever Zach Britton tossed a perfect eighth inning in his New York debut, two days after being acquired from Baltimore for three pitching prospects.

There was a strange sighting, too. As Neil Walker batted with two outs in the Yankees seventh, several thousand fans in the sellout crowd suddenly switched on their cell phone lights and shined them toward the field. There was no instant explanation.

Junis (5-11) is 0-8 in 10 starts since beating the Yankees in mid-May. He has allowed a major league-high 25 home runs, and the drive by Gregorius made it 6-0 in the fourth.

Gregorius homered one pitch after shortstop Adalberto Mondesi bounced a throw to first on a routine grounder with two outs. As Gregorius rounded the bases, Mondesi took off his glove and wandered into shallow center field.

UP NEXT

Royals: Rookie RHP Brad Keller (3-4, 3.20 ERA) starts on his 23rd birthday. He pitched a perfect inning in relief against the Yankees in mid-May.

Yankees: LHP CC Sabathia (6-4, 3.51) will start on 12 days’ rest. A rainout and the All-Star break resulted in the long break. He’ll pitch on his bobblehead night in the Bronx.

Hays Monarchs rally for 5-2 win over Sabetha

SABETHA – Chase Werth and Cole Zimmerman each drove in two and three pitchers held Sabetha to just two runs as the Hays Monarchs earned a 5-2 win Thursday.

Sabetha took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning but the Monarchs answered back with a three-run third inning.

Eston Brown got the inning started with a two-out infield single. He then scored on a passed ball and then Chase Werth followed that with a triple to left field that scored two more putting Hays up 3-2.

Cole Zimmerman drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth to put Hays up 5-2.

Tate Garcia allowed just two runs on three hits, struck out three and walked four in 4 2-3 innings to earn the win.

Chase Werth earned the save, he struck out three in an 1 1-3 inning.

Zimmerman was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Werth finished 1 for 2 with 2 RBI’s.

Hays Eagles defeat Topeka at state tournament

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion poured on the runs against the Topeka Senators Thursday morning in the second day of pool play, winning 11-4 at the Kansas American Legion baseball AAA State Tournament in Emporia.

The Eagles, who according to coach Dustin Schumacher have not played well this season in morning games started off the game with a 2-0 lead after Palmer Hutchison stole home plate on a double steal and Trey Riggs scored a run on an RBI single by Jamison Martin. After a Dominic Bainter walk and Dawson Harman single in the second, Bainter would score on a ground ball by Brady Kreutzer and Harman would be brought home on a Hutchison sacrifice fly. Will Sennett, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch would come in to score on an RBI double by Trey Riggs to give Hays a 5-0 lead going into the third.

The Eagles would give up one run each in the bottom of the third and sixth innings but score one in the top of the sixth and five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Topeka scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough as the final score was 11-4.

Coach Dustin Schumacher

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Mike Moustakas had two hits, including a run-scoring double, in what might have been his final home game for the Kansas City Royals, an 8-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

Larks season finale rained out

The Hays Larks and Liberal Bee Jay’s did their best to dodge the rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday night at Larks Park but mother nature had other plans.  A deluge of rain simply put too much water on the field to play.  The game was the finale for both squads with the Larks wrapping up the Jayhawk League title more than a week prior.

Liberal had been informed they were invited to play in the NBC World Series during the first week of play and will begin their pool play on Friday in Wichita.

The Larks finish the regular season at 34-10 and 26-9 in Jayhawk League play.  Hays will be part of Championship Week at the NBC World Series starting in early August.  When the bracket is released we will update you on Hays Post and all the World Series games will be broadcast on KAYS.

Hays Eagles lose to Nickerson to open pool play

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion fell to the Nickerson Panthers 4-3 Wednesday afternoon to open pool play at the Kansas American Legion baseball AAA State Tournament.

The Eagles would maintain the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth when a throwing error and a passed ball scored two runs for Nickerson. Hays could not do anything offensively in the top of the seventh and Nickerson walked away with the victory.

Coach Dustin Schumacher

The Eagles were solid on the mound in the game. Cody Peterson gave up two hits on 51 pitches including two strikeouts and a walk in three innings. Trey Riggs went the final three innings giving up two hits with three strikeouts. None of the four runs given up were earned.
