Junior Monarchs split with Great Bend, Seniors rained out

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Junior Monarchs had their eight game win streak snapped in a 3-1 loss in game one of a doubleheader with the Great Bend Braves Tuesday night but they came back to win the second game 19-3, scoring 17 runs in the final three innings.

Ethan Atherton went 5-for-5 including four doubles and drove in five in the second game. Carter Newell scattered eight hits over six innings for the win.

The Braves raced out to a 3-0 lead after five innings in the first game. Jace Wentling hit a home run in the sixth for the Monarchs only run.

The Junior Monarchs are 12-4-1 on the season and host Larned Thursday.

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays Senior Monarchs were rained out last night against Hoisington. They play at a tournament in Great Bend starting Friday.

Eagles sweep Dodge City, Junior Legion splits with Salina

DODGE CITY, Kan. The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion ran their winning streak to 11 Tuesday night after a doubleheader sweep of Dodge City. The Eagles scored five in the fifth inning and five in the sixth inning to blow open a one-run game in the 12-1 win in teh opener.

Cody Peterson and Dawson Harman both had three of the Eagles 11 hits and both drove in four.

The Eagles scored seven in the second inning and three in the third to build a 10-1 lead in the second game and won 13-5.

Willie Sennett was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Senior Eagles improve to 15-1-1. They travel to Omaha for the Battle of Omaha Tournament where they begin play against the Wichita Aeros Thursday morning.

SALINA, Kan. – The Junior Eagles split their doubleheader in Salina with the Hawks, winning the opener 15-6 then losing the nightcap 10-0.

Hays rallied from a 6-1 deficit after two innings in the first game, scoring three in the third then six in the fifth and five in the sixth. Tyson Dinkel drove in three runs. Chance Murphy struck out seven over six innings and picked up the win.

The Hawks used a five-run second to build a 7-0 lead in the second game which was called by run-rule after four innings. Tyson Dinkel had the Junior Eagles only hit in the game.

The Junior Eagles are scheduled to play Clay Center Wednesday.

Rangers extend winning streak to 4, beat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Cole Hamels allowed four hits over seven innings, Delino DeShields doubled home two runs and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Tuesday night to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games.

The Royals have lost eight straight, matching their season high, and 14 of 15. They own a major league-worst 10-28 home record and their 22-51 overall mark is the worst in franchise history after 73 games.

Hamels (4-6) picked up his first win since May 22. The run off him in the fifth was unearned and he has yet to allow an earned run in 20 innings over three starts at Kauffman Stadium.

Keone Kela pitched a spotless ninth for his 17th save in as many chances.

DeShields’ second-inning double scored Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Robinson Chirinos.

Kiner-Falefa, who had three hits and walked, doubled home Adrian Beltre in the third. Jurickson Profar scored the second run of the inning after Mike Moustakas’ fielding error to make it 4-0.

Royals starter Jason Hammel (2-8) was removed after 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and four walks. Hammel is 0-6 in nine home starts since an Aug. 20 victory over Cleveland.

Rosell Herrera’s two-out double in the fifth scored Alex Gordon with the Kansas City run.

Whit Merrifield led off the Royals’ first with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and stole third with none out, but did not score. Salvador Perez grounded into his 12th double play after Moustakas walked to end the inning.

Alex Gordon picked up his seventh outfield assist of the season, throwing out Elvis Andrus trying to score from second on Profar’s ninth-inning single.

GAME TWO TIDBITS

The Rangers have more than half of their 31 victories in the second games of series. They are 16-8 in Game 2s.

Adalberto Mondesi doubled off Rangers RHP Bartolo Colon on Monday. His father Raul Mondesi went 2 for 11 off Colon. The Mondesi family is the fourth father-son combo to each record a plate appearance against the 45-year-old pitcher.

ROSTER MOVES

Rangers: LHP Yohander Mendez was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock after violating team rules. RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx was recalled from the same club.

Royals: RHP Heath Fillmyer was recalled from Triple-A Omaha, where he was 4-5 with a 5.75 ERA in 13 starts. He will be used in relief.

Royals: 1B Lucas Duda (right foot plantar fasciitis) went 2 for 5 with a three-run homer and a double in Omaha’s 9-2 victory Tuesday in Reno in his second minor league rehab game. Colon passes Marichal for most wins by Dominican pitcher

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Bartolo Colon earned his 244th win, passing Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for the most by a pitcher born in the Dominican Republic, and the Texas Rangers beat the skidding Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Monday night.

Adrian Beltre hit a three-run homer for the Rangers, who won their third straight game. The 45-year-old Colon (4-4) allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings to break a tie with Marichal on the career wins chart.

Only right-hander Dennis Martinez has more victories among pitchers from Latin America. Martinez, a native of Nicaragua, won 245 games in the majors.

The Royals have lost seven straight and 13 of 14. They’ve dropped 27 of 37 games at Kauffman Stadium, the worst home record in the majors. Kansas City is 2-14 in June, having been outscored 95-35.

Colon was 1-3 with a 9.51 ERA in his five previous starts. Kansas City loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but the portly and popular right-hander affectionately nicknamed Big Sexy got out of the inning when Hunter Dozier grounded into a double play.

Keona Kela tossed a spotless ninth for his 16th save in 16 chances.

Beltre homered in the third off Ian Kennedy, with Elvis Andrus and Nomar Mazara aboard, to give the Rangers a 5-0 advantage. Mazara had three hits.

Kennedy (1-7) is 1-13 in his last 28 home starts. He is winless in 13 starts since an April 7 victory at Cleveland.

The right-hander gave up a home run to Shin-Soo Choo on his fourth pitch, a drive that just cleared the Royals’ right-field bullpen fence. Choo reached base five times, including a double and three walks.

Kennedy yielded five runs on four hits, two of them home runs, and three walks.

Adalberto Mondesi had a run-producing double in the Kansas City third and scored on Mike Moustakas’ sacrifice fly.

Rosel Herrera had a run-scoring triple in the fourth for his first extra-base hit and RBI, trimming the lead to 5-3.

Delino DeShields’ bunt single in the eighth scored Jurickson Profar for the final Texas run.

Royals SS Alcides Escobar is in a 3-for-45 drought in his past 12 games.

Royals trade RHP Kelvin Herrera to Nationals for 3 players

WASHINGTON (AP) – Right-hander Kelvin Herrera has been acquired by the Washington Nationals from the Kansas City Royals for three minor leaguers.

The Nationals sent infielder Kelvin Gutierrez, outfielder Blake Perkins and right-hander Yohanse Morel to Kansas City in the deal announced Monday during Washington’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees.

Herrera has 14 saves and a 1.05 ERA this season. He’s allowed three earned runs in 25 2/3 innings while striking out 22 batters and walking two.

He is a two-time AL All-Star who helped Kansas City win the 2015 World Series. He is 23-27 with 57 saves and a 2.75 ERA across 442 games in relief over eight seasons in the majors.

Herrera joins lefty closer Sean Doolittle and eighth-inning righty Ryan Madson in the back of Washington’s bullpen. Brandon Kintzler, the usual seventh-inning man for Washington, went on the disabled list June 10 with a right forearm flexor strain.

Larks sweep Oklahoma City on Father’s Day

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays Larks continued their hot hitting Sunday night, capping off a three-game sweep of Oklahoma 12-5. The Larks put together a seven-run fourth inning which was started with a double by Mike Anastasia. Scott Wolverton was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and Devin Hager placed a perfect bunt towards third base advancing the runners, but a fielding error by Oklahoma first baseman Evan Fulps scored Anastasia and Wolverton. Hager advanced to third where he was batted in by Ryne Randle on a single.

Indian pitcher Harrison Moy gave up a single in the next at bat to Wyatt Divis and a walk to Clayton Rasbeary which set up Easton Kirk with the bases loaded and no outs. Kirk launched the second pitch he saw over the right field wall for a grand slam to give Hays a 12-4 lead after four. Hays would only give up one run in the top of the seventh for the rest of the game.

Carlos Tavera allowed four runs over four innings and picked up his second win. Sloan Baker and Michael Wong each went one inning with no runs given up. Toby Scoles gave up one run and five hits in three innings pitched.

Ryne Randle was 3-5 with three singles, three runs scored and an RBI. Wyatt Divis was 3-4 with three runs scored.

The Larks have won seven of their last eight games and move to 11-3 on the year. They are off until Wednesday when they travel to Dodge City.

 

Astros beat KC for 11th straight win, finish 10-0 road trip

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Carlos Correa and the Houston Astros won their 11th straight game, finishing off a dominant 10-0 road trip by rallying past the Kansas City Royals 7-4 Sunday.

The World Series champion Astros swept their swing through Texas, Oakland and Kansas City, outscoring opponents 74-35.

Last season, Houston had an 11-game winning streak end in Kansas City. This time, the Astros trailed 4-3 in the eighth inning before Correa led off with a tying homer. Evan Gattis, who had three hits, then put them ahead during a three-run burst.

Correa has three home runs and eight RBIs in six games after missing four games with discomfort in his right side. He had a first-inning single and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Gattis hit .366 with five home runs and 19 RBIs on the Astros’ trip. He singled home Yuli Gurriel in the eighth, and Marvin Gonzalez added an RBI single in the inning.

The Royals have lost six straight and 12 of 13. They have dropped 26 of 36 home games.

Brandon Maurer (0-3) took the loss, facing two batters and having both score. Tony Sipp (2-0) picked up the victory. Hector Rondon closed for his fourh save.

Astros right-hander Lance McCullers struck out nine over six innings, allowing two unearned runs. Royals right-hander Brad Keller, a Rule 5 draft pick making his fourth start, gave up three runs in six innings.

Third baseman Alex Bregman’s errant throw home with the bases loaded led to the Royals scoring two unearned runs in the first to tie it at 2. Hunter Dozier hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Royals a 4-2 lead.

Brian McCann’s two-out single in the fourth scored Gattis to reduce the Royals’ lead to one.

ROYALS OUSTER

Royals designated hitter Mike Moustakas and LHP Danny Duffy were ejected by plate umpire John Tumpane. Moustakas was ejected for words said from the dugout after he was out at home while trying to score from second on a single. A video replay upheld the call on the field. Duffy was thumbed in the sixth for his dugout verbiage. It was the Royals’ first ejections this season. Tumpane has a history with the Royals – he tossed RHP Peter Moylan last July and Moustakas and manager Ned Yost in August in Baltimore.

ATTENDANCE DROP-OFF

After 36 home games, the Royals attendance is down 212,572 from last year. They drew 958,297 for 36 home games in 2017. This year that total is 737,725.

ROSTER MOVES

The Royals recalled INF Adalberto Mondesi, who is the only player to make his big league debut in the World Series, was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. The Royals also summoned OF Rosell Herrera and RHP Wily Peralta from the Storm Chasers. They optioned RHP Scott Barlow and INF Ramon Torres to Omaha and transferred LHP Eric Skoglund to the 60-day disabled list.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: 2B Whit Merrifield left in the second inning after fouling a pitch off his left knee. He has a contusion and is listed as day-to-day. Mondesi replaced him.

Munoz homer lifts Larks to split in Liberal

LIBERAL, Kan. – Matt Munoz hit a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Hays Larks to an 8-6 win over Liberal and a split in their doubleheader Thursday at Brent Gould Field. The Bee Jays rallied to win the opener 6-5.

Munoz heroics came after the Bee Jays scored six in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Clayton Rasbeary and Easton Kirk both homered to help the Larks built a 4-0 lead after three innings.

Fabian Muniz pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the win.

The Larks had a 3-0 lead in the first game then rallied for two in the sixth but the comeback fell one run short.

Liberal scored four in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Tyler Blomster allowed five runs on six hits over four innings and suffered the loss.

The Larks are now 9-3 and 6-2 in the Jayhawk League and remain a game up on Derby. They are back at home Friday for the start of a three game weekend series with Oklahoma City. Admission is free courtesy of Arnett Chiropractic, Redeem Designs and R&D Graphics.

Eagles sweep Norton

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion pushed their winning streak to nine games after a doubleheader sweep of Norton Thursday at Larks Park. Brady Kreutzer doubled and drove in four and scored three runs in an 11-1 win in game one. Braiden Stouth had a double and knocked in three in a 12-1 game two victory.

Aaryn Smith didn’t allow a hit over three innings and got the game one victory. Trey Riggs went two innings and gets the win as the Eagles improve to 13-1-1.

The Junior Eagles lost a couple of one-run games at the Battle of Omaha. The Eagles lost 4-3 to Bellevue West and 6-5 to Omaha Central. They play Bonner Springs and Ponderosa, Colorado Friday.

Seventh annual First Responders Night is Saturday at Larks Park

The Hays Baseball Association and Hays Larks Baseball are hosting the seventh annual “First Responders Night” at the Larks Park on Saturday, June 16, at 7 p.m.. everyone is invited to attend the game to help pay tribute to law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and all first responders for their commitment and contributions to our community. The Hays Larks will be playing the Oklahoma City Indians, and admission is free courtesy of the evening’s game sponsor, Nex-Tech.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, a Hays Larks board member, praised the dedication of the area’s first responders.

Mahle, Duvall lead Reds over skidding Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tyler Mahle allowed three hits while pitching into the seventh, Adam Duvall hit a ninth-inning grand slam and the Cincinnati Reds beat the skidding Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Wednesday night.

Mahle (5-6) allowed only one runner to touch second base in 6 1/3 innings, matching his career longest start. He is 2-0 in June, allowing two earned runs and 14 hits in 16 1/3 innings.

The Royals have lost nine of 10 and have dropped 23 of 33 home games. They have scored 11 runs in their last eight games and 23 in 12 June games.

Kansas City is hitting .147 this month with runners in scoring position, including 1 for 25 in the past six games.

Duvall greeted rookie reliever Jason Adam with his second grand slam in two weeks, driving a 2-2 pitch over the left-center wall.

Royals starter Jason Hammel (2-7) allowed three runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings.

Alex Gordon, a five-time American League Gold Glove winner, made two defensive gems in the sixth inning. Curt Casali singled off the left-field bullpen fence and tried to stretch it into a double. Gordon threw him out from the warning track for his fifth outfield assist this season and the 85th of his career.

Two pitches later, Gordon made a diving head-first catch of Billy Hamilton’s liner to rob him of a hit.

Salvador Perez and Hunter Dozier grounded into double plays to end the first two Royals innings.

Mahle retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced after Gordon walked in the second inning.

The Royals did not have a runner touch second base until Whit Merrifield doubled with two out in the sixth. Mike Moustakas flied out to center to end the inning.

Scooter Gennett had two singles, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. … Jose Peraza has reached base in 15 consecutive games. … Reliever Jared Hughes, who pitched a scoreless inning, has not allowed a run in 15 straight appearances.

Kansas Sports Hall of Fame announces 2018 inductees

WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2018 class Tuesday afternoon. 13 new members will be inducted on October 7th in Wichita.

The 13 member class raises the total number of Kansas Sports Hall of Fame inductees to 286. The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is in its 57th year of operation.

Highlighting the list is former Kansas and NBA star Paul Pierce and Kansas City Royals founder Ewing Kauffman.

Larned native and former Great Bend resident Mitch Webster who had a 13-year MLB career is also in the class. Webster is currently a scout for the Royals.

David Allen, Kansas State football
Set 10 Kansas State records, including punt-return yards, attempts and touchdowns. He was a consensus All-American in 1998, just one of his three All-America selections. He led the nation in punt return yards and touchdowns and finished his career tied for the NCAA record in punt-return touchdowns. Allen went on to play for the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and St. Louis Rams in the NFL.

Angela Buckner, Kapuan Mt. Carmel, Wichita State basketball
Three-time All-Missouri Valley selection. She was the conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2001. She finished as the Shockers career leader in rebounds and is the only player to finish with more than 1,300 points and 1,200 rebounds. She set the school and conference records with 67 double-doubles.

Larry Drew, Wyandotte, Missouri, NBA
Won a state championship at Wyandotte high in 1976. Led Missouri to the Big Eight Tournament title in 1978 and conference title in 1980. Drafted No. 17 by the Detroit Pistons and spent 10 seasons in the NBA with the Pistons, Kansas City/Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers. Named a Lakers assistant in 1992 and has spent time with seven NBA franchises. Currently an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Buff Farrow, Wichita Southeast, UCLA tennis
A two-time state champion at Southeast High School. Two-time team captain at UCLA where he was two-time All-Pac 12 and All-American. He was an NCAA singles semifinalist and doubles finalist in 1988.

Jim Helmer, Lyons, Southwestern College track and cross country
Spent six years at Winfield High School as the cross country coach and won two state championships with the Vikings. Won 31 and 29 straight KCAC cross country and track titles, respectively at Southwestern College. Helmer is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame.

Darryl Jones, St. Benedict’s College basketball
As a freshman and sophomore Jones was picked to the NAIA All-American third team. Named first team All-American as a junior and senior. Helped lead St. Benedict’s to twp NAIA Tournament appearances and the 1967 national championship. Finished career as the school’s all-time leader in rebounds, assists and games played and was the school’s second-leading scorer.

Ewing Kauffman, Kansas City Royals owner
Kauffman was the founding owner of the Kansas City Royals. Kauffman was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 1993.

Laurie Koehn, Moundridge, Kansas State basketball
Led Moundridge high school to four straight Class 2A title games and two state championships. Set Kansas records for three-pointers and free-throw percentage. Helped lead Kansas State to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Set K-State and Big 12 records for three-point makes in her career. She was a three-time All-Big 12 first team selection before she signed with the Washington Mystics in 2005 and spent five seasons in the WNBA.

Adam Laroche, Fort Scott, MLB
Finished state runner-up in 1988 at Fort Scott high school. Went to Fort Scott Community College then Seminole State in Oklahoma, where he won an NJCAA national championship was named NJCAA World Series MVP. Was drafted to the MLB three times and signed with the Atlanta Braves as a first baseman in 2000. Spent 12 seasons in the MLB with the Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox.

Paul Pierce, Kansas, NBA
Was named All-Big Eight, freshman All-American and Co-Big Eight Freshman of the Year. Named the Big Eight Conference Tournament MVP as a sophomore. During junior season earned the same honor and was named to the All-Big 12 first team. He was named an All-American and a finalist for the Wooden and Naismith awards as a senior. Finished his Jayhawk career as KU’s fifth leading scorer all-time. Selected as the No. 10 overall pick by the Boston Celtics and spent 19 seasons with the Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers. He was a 10-time NBA All-Star, four-time All-NBA selection and 2008 NBA champion.

Clarence Scott, Kansas State football
A four-time letterman at Kansas State and All-American as a senior defensive back in 1970. Scott set the K-State record for interceptions and passes defended. Was the No. 14 pick in the 1971 NFL Draft and played all of his 13-year NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. He was selected to the 1973 Pro Bowl and finished his professional career with 39 interceptions and two touchdowns.

Chuck Smith, Pittsburg-Colgan football coach
Smith spent 37 seasons on the football sidelines of St. Mary’s Colgan High. Played football and baseball at Pittsburg State. Started coaching at Bishop Ward then Topeka Hayden before landing at Colgan in 1980. Smith won five state championships and a six-time runner-up. He led Colgan to a 66-game win streak from 2000-04 and finished his career with a 346-80 record. He retired in December 2016.

Mitch Webster, Larned, MLB
Was drafted in the 23rd round as a switch-hitting outfielder and spent 13 seasons in the MLB with the Dodgers, Blue Jays, Expos, Cubs, Indians and Pirates. He finished his career with 900 hits, 342 RBIs, 70 home runs and a .263 batting average. In 1986, he led the National League with 13 triples. After his last MLB appearance in 1995 with the Dodgers, Webster spent time as a scout for the Dodgers and Royals.

Larks edge Liberal in rain shortened game

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Hays Larks took advantage of an error and the weather to beat Liberal 2-1 Tuesday night at Brent Gould Field. The Larks scored two in the second inning thanks to a Bee Jay error. Easton Kirk scored from second on the error by the Bee Jays second baseman then with two outs Wyatt Divis singled home Matt Munoz.

The Larks scored four in the sixth and led 6-1 when heavy rain halted play. The Bee Jays had two on with one out when the the game was called.

Michael Wong, who worked out of a bases loaded jam without giving up a run in the fourth, picked up the win. Wong allowed the one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk through five innings.

The Larks are now 8-2 and 5-1 in the Jayhawk League. Game two of the three game series is Wednesday night.
