He finished the season with 62 tackles, including 7.5 for loss, with five interceptions, 14 passes defended, and two forced fumbles. Jibowu helped FHSU to its first MIAA Championship in football as the team went undefeated during the regular season at 11-0. The team made its first NCAA Playoff appearance since 1995 and finished at 11-1 overall. Jibowu served as one of the team’s captains.

Jibowu is not only impressive on the field, but also in the classroom where he holds a 3.56 cumulative GPA as a Management major. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team selection this year at defensive back, one of only eight defensive backs in NCAA Division II to receive Academic All-America honors. He is now a two-time MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient (2015 and 2017) for earning all-conference honors and maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

KU Chancellor fires Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has fired the Athletic Director.

Zenger-Photo University of Kansas

In an email to the campus Monday, Chancellor Douglas A. Girod wrote, “This morning I met with Director of Athletics Sheahon Zenger and informed him that I am relieving him of his duties, effective immediately.

Sheahon has been a loyal Jayhawk, and our athletics department has improved in many areas under his leadership. But Athletics continues to face a number of challenges, and progress in key areas has been elusive. To achieve the level of success we need and expect, I have determined a change in leadership is necessary.

Sean Lester, our deputy athletics director, will serve as interim director. I have spoken with Sean about my expectations for the coming months, and I am confident he will provide sound leadership and stability during this transition.

I have begun the process of identifying a permanent athletics director. To lead this process, I have enlisted Drue Jennings, one of our most respected and accomplished alumni. Many of you know Drue as our interim athletics director in 2003 and for his role in leading the search processes that brought Chancellor Gray-Little and Coach Self to KU. Jed Hughes, a consultant with the Korn Ferry executive search firm, will assist Drue.

In addition, earlier today I spoke with Coach Beaty and shared my expectation that he will continue recruiting hard and getting his team ready for the season.

Since becoming chancellor, I have spent countless hours with higher education peers and Jayhawks to hear their perspective on KU. A common thread in these conversations is that, as a major public university with national aspirations, we must continue to strive for excellence in all areas — including athletics. As I have said many times, a successful athletics department is inextricably linked to our broader mission as a flagship research university.

The other common thread in these conversations is optimism for Kansas Athletics. Across the country, we are recognized as having elite programs, a proud tradition, and a loyal fan base. These assets will serve us well as we identify a new leader for Kansas Athletics.

I want to thank Sheahon for his service during the past seven years. Under his leadership, student-athlete GPAs reached an all-time high. Rock Chalk Park, McCarthy Hall, and the DeBruce Center are lasting tributes to his efforts. Most importantly, he prioritized our student-athletes and represented KU with integrity and class.”

Austin, Gray lead scorching Yankees to rout of Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Tyler Austin hit a pair of two-run homers, Sonny Gray pitched eight innings of four-hit ball and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 10-1 on Sunday to win eight consecutive series for the first time since 1998.

Miguel Andujar and Austin Romine added back-to-back homers in the ninth for the Yankees, who have won 14 of their last 15 against the AL Central.

Gray (3-3) was coming off a tough start against Oakland in which he allowed five runs and a season-high nine hits in five innings. But there was nothing tough about facing the Royals’ popgun lineup, which didn’t manage its first hit until there were two down in the fifth.

Gray wound up allowing one run while striking out five and walking one. New York is 24-1 when allowing four runs or fewer.

Eric Skoglund (1-4) gave up six runs, eight hits and two walks in five innings, the latest lousy start by the Royals’ rotation. Kansas City’s 5.51 team ERA is by far the worst in the majors.

Kansas City remains winless in six rubber games this season.

One night after the Yankees pounded five homers, including two from Gary Sanchez, it was the strong but inconsistent Austin that gave New York the lead and kept adding to it.

Skoglund had managed to avoid early trouble, nearly getting a triple play in the second inning, but walked Aaron Hicks to start the fourth. Austin turned on the first pitch he saw and sent it about 440 feet over the left-field wall – it actually went about 500 feet with the bounce.

New York tacked on two more runs, the first on Romine’s single later in the inning and the other on Hicks’ triple in the fifth, before Austin got into the act again.

This time, his two-run shot was a high fly ball that just cleared the centerfield wall.

It was the second two-homer game of the year for Austin, who also did it March 31 at Toronto. The four RBIs matched a career high, which he also accomplished April 23 against Minnesota.

That was plenty for Gray, who finally surrendered a run with two outs in the eighth. He retired his first 14 batters and only allowed two runners to reach second through the first seven innings.

SWEET LOU

The Royals wrapped their Legends Weekend celebration with Lou Piniella throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. Piniella has deep ties to both clubs, having played five seasons in Kansas City and his final 11 with New York. He also spent three seasons as the Yankees’ manager.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

New York’s starting lineup Saturday was its first with every player under 29 since Sept. 26, 1970, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

HELLO, OLD FRIEND

Kansas City assigned RHP Michael Mariot to Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The eighth-round pick of the Royals in 2010 was signed Friday after getting released by San Diego earlier in the week.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Yankees: 1B Greg Bird (right ankle surgery) could rejoin the Yankees soon, manager Aaron Boone said, but that could lead to some tough roster decisions. “The good thing is a lot of people here put themselves in a position to make it difficult,” Boone said.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy said he’s perfectly healthy, despite another miserable outing Saturday, and floated the idea of moving to the bullpen. Manager Ned Yost nixed that on Sunday. “That’s not happening. He’s a major league starter,” Yost said, “and yes, he’s going to make his next start.”

UP NEXT

The Yankees head to Texas for a three-game set beginning Monday night, when RHP Masahiro Tanaka (4-2, 4.73 ERA) will be on the mound. The Royals head across Missouri for three games with St. Louis with RHP Ian Kennedy (1-4, 4.98 ERA) starting the opener Monday night.

Jets sign FHSU’s Nathan Shepherd to 4-year deal

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd, the team’s third-round draft pick out of Fort Hays State , to a four-year deal worth the slotted amount of $3.4 million.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound native of Ontario, Canada, was the first Division II player selected in this year’s draft.

Shepherd began his college career at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia in 2011 and became a starter after redshirting his freshman season. He then left school for financial reasons and worked various jobs for the next two years before walking on to Fort Hays State’s team in Kansas.

He was the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association defensive player of the year as a senior and finished his three-year career at Fort Hays with 168 tackles, including 27 for loss, and 10 sacks.

The announcement Friday leaves the Jets with just two unsigned draft picks: quarterback Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection; and tight end Chris Herndon, a fourth-rounder.

TMP-M qualifies 13 for state track championships

Candace Yost, mother of senior Savannah Yost – TMP’s lone regional champion – records on her iPhone the announcement of her daughter’s top finish in the girls’ high jump.

BELOIT – It was a successful day for the Thomas More Prep-Marian track and field teams at Thursday’s Class 3A regional action at Trojan Stadium.

By finishing in the top four of their respective events, the Monarch boys’ and girls’ teams qualified 13 athletes in nine different events for next week’s Kansas State High School Championships in Wichita.

Sophomore Adell Riedel qualified in four events – finishing fourth in the open 800 and 1,600 meters and helping two relays finish in the top four. The 3,200-meter quartet finished third, while the 1,600-meter foursome was fourth.

Senior Savannah Yost, who was part of the state-qualifying 1,600 relay, was the Monarchs’ only regional champion. She won the girls’ high jump by clearing 5-2.

Junior Emily Schippers also ran on both those state-qualifying relays, while junior Julia Werth was a member of the 3,200 relay and also placed third in the open 800 meters.

Other individual qualifiers for the Monarch girls were junior Paris Wolf, the long jump runner-up, and sophomore Jenna Rome, who tied for third in high jump. Other relay members were sophomore M.K. Dwyer (1,600) and junior Kiara Urban (3,200).

The Monarch boys had two individual state qualifiers in senior David McFarland and junior Ethan Lang. McFarland cleared a career-best 6-2 in high jump to finish second, while Lang placed third in the 1,600 and also helped the 3,200 relay finish third.

Other members of the 3,200 relay were freshmen Lucas Lang and Garrett Pfeifer and sophomore Blayne Riedel.
Ethan Lang nearly qualified in three events but lost a race down the stretch as the anchor of the final event, the 1,600 relay, and the Monarchs finished fifth.

Other fifth-place efforts for the Monarchs and finishing just one place out of qualifying for state was junior Sheldon Weber, who lost in a near photo finish at the line in the 3,200 meters, and the girls’ 400 relay, which finished fifth in a highly competitive race.

TMP’s girls finished fifth in team standings, while the boys were 11th.

Norton’s girls dominated the sprints, including a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200-meter dash, to edge Sterling out of first place by two points for the team title.

Junior Allison Engelbert won the gold in the 200, followed by sophomore Slayten Braun and senior Kara Frack. Those three joined freshman Courtney Jones for a first-place effort in the 400 relay, while Braun also was the runner-up in the 100 dash.

Other individual regional champs for Norton’s girls were freshman Hannah Bailey in the 800 meters and sophomore Jaida McEwen, javelin.

Scott City dominated the boys’ competition, claiming the regional team title with a whopping 110 points – 49 ahead of second-place Colby. Scott City won all three relays and placed in the top four of numerous individual events.

Lady Indian soccer golden in 3OT

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Hays 2, Mulvane 1 3OT

MULVANE, Kan.-It took exactly 104 minutes and 35 seconds for the Hays High Lady Indian soccer team to prevail in their 4-1A Central/South Central Region #2 Championship game on Thursday evening in Mulvane. Things did not start off so well for Hays as Mulvane scored in the 11th minute off of a right side shot that hit the cross bar and came straight down and into to the goal for a 1-0 Lady Wildcat lead. That would be the only goal the home team would score.

Hays High was able to tie the game in the 35th minute when Kamryn Schoenberger was able to knock home a rebound off a near miss from Sophie Humphrey to make the score 1-1. The score would remain that way through regulation and the first two overtimes as the two teams battled heat and exhaustion throughout the evening with temperatures pushing the upper 80’s all game long.

Regulation was not sufficient enough time to settle this playoff battle as the two teams played through two 10-minute overtime periods and the score remained tied heading to the third overtime that would only be five minutes long. That is when Hays Head Coach Silas Hibbs made a strategic move that changed the outcome of the contest and the season. At the start of the third overtime Hibbs took goalie Isabel Robben out of goal and moved her to the front line to provide a pair of fresh legs for an offensive push.

It paid enormous dividends for the Lady Indians. With under a minute to go Robben was able to beat a pair of Mulvane defenders to a 50-50 ball in the middle of the field. As she broke free it forced the Wildcat goalie to come out of the net to try and force what would have been a difficult stop. Robben was then able to punch the ball by the goalie and into the net for the golden goal and game winner with only 25 seconds remaining.

Hays High improves to 11-6-1 on the season. With the win they also advance to the 4-1A State Quarterfinals where they will meet up with McPherson on Tuesday night at 6pm at McPherson College.
