Five Women, Eight Men Earn USTFCCCA All-Central Region Honors for Outdoor Season

NEW ORLEANS – The Fort Hays State track and field program was well represented on the 2018 edition of the USTFCCCA All-Region team, with five women and eight men earning the honors. The announcement was released Monday (May 14) with 688 men and 640 women making the cut. The Tigers are listed in the Central Region in NCAA Division II.

The top-five individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to the top-three relay teams in each event. The regions include the Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West.

Brett Meyer leads the way for the men as he earned All-Region honors in two events. Meyer currently owns the third-best time in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3:43.64, good enough for an automatic qualification, as well as a No. 15 time in the 800-meters at 1:50.15. Decano Cronin also boasts a strong time in the 800-meters for his All-Region honors with a time of 1:47.98, an automatic qualifying time. Cronin and Meyer both also made the list of Division II Top Performers.

Other honorees for the men includes Lucas Broxterman and Kolt Newell in the high jump, TJ Dozier in the discus, and Sam Dreiling and Jake Morrow in the pole vault.

Kelly Wycoff earned All-Region honors for the women in the 400-meters with her No. 5 ranked time of 54.42. Also on the track for the women is Lindsay Roberts earning the honor in the 1,500-meters with her best time of 4:30.37. This time places Roberts on the performance list at No. 31. Three women earned the All-Region honors in field events with Selam Ball earning in the pole vault and Madison Wolf and Alexcia Deutscher in the javelin. Wolf holds the No. 1 distance in the javelin in Division II with a throw of 167 feet, 3 inches, while Deutscher comes in at No. 5 with her strong showing of 157 feet, 9 inches.

The 2018 NCAA Division II national qualifiers will be announced Tuesday (May 15) in the afternoon.

Kluber, Gomes lead Indians past Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) – Corey Kluber was handed a big lead early in the game and the rest was simple.

Kluber became the American League’s first six-game winner and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 11-2 on Sunday.

The Indians led 9-0 going into the fifth, leading to a stress-free afternoon for the reigning Cy Young Award winner, who gave up two unearned runs in seven innings, scattering eight hits.

“If you have a nine run cushion, obviously you have a bigger margin for error,” Kluber said. “They’ve always been pretty aggressive against me. It can work both ways. You can get some early contact and get some quick outs.”

Kluber (6-2) was backed by four hits from Yan Gomes, including a three-run homer. Jose Ramirez also hit a three-run shot and Michael Brantley had a two-run homer as the Indians had 15 hits.

“It was nice to get him some runs,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “He knows what to do with it.”

Kansas City manager Ned Yost knew the big deficit was a bad sign against Kluber, who also won the Cy Young in 2014.

“Yes, he’s that good,” Yost said. “He’s got a tremendous cutter, a real good curveball, and a fastball that starts at a hitter’s hip and just fades right back in over the corner. He’s got excellent command.”

Yankees starter Luis Severino later joined Kluber with six wins.

Gomes hit a fourth-inning home run off Danny Duffy (1-5), doubled in the second and singled in the third and sixth to match his career high for hits.

Ramirez’s homer capped a five-run second inning while Brantley homered in the seventh.

Francisco Lindor extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with three hits, including an RBI single in the third. Lindor had two homers and two doubles Saturday. He got off to an inauspicious start Sunday, walking to home plate in the first inning wearing the wrong batting helmet.

A switch-hitter, Lindor had on the helmet he usually uses when he hits left-handed – with a protective flap on the right side. But he was facing the left-hander Duffy and was going to hit right-handed.

Lindor quickly realized the mistake, exchanged helmets with a bat boy and smiled when he returned to the batter’s box. Lindor flied out. Helmets with flaps on the side facing the pitcher have been mandatory for all players making their major league debuts since 1983.

Cleveland strung together a single, a double, two walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and RBI ground balls by Greg Allen and Brantley in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Ramirez’s 12th homer of the season pushed the lead to five.

After striking out Brandon Guyer to finally end the inning, a frustrated Duffy tossed a cooler in the dugout but his day would only get worse. Lindor drove in another run in the following inning before Gomes hit his fifth homer of the season.

Duffy allowed nine runs in 3 1-3 innings. His fortunes were much different than his previous outing when the Royals scored 10 runs in the top of the first. Duffy allowed one run in 5 1-3 innings for his first win of the season.

Duffy, whose ERA jumped from 5.15 to 6.51, gave his performance a harsh critique.

“I just wasn’t making pitches,” he said. “There is nothing else to it. I don’t know what else to say. I have not been a good pitcher this year. There are no excuses. I’ve been letting my team down.”

PERFECT DAY?

Gomes fouled out to first baseman Lucas Duda in the seventh, ending his bid for a 5 for 5 afternoon. He admitted getting a fifth hit was on his mind.

“It’s an 11-2 ballgame, so you can take in some of the moment while you’re having your last at-bat,” he said. “I was going to be happy no matter what, I think.”

LOOK OUT

The ball boy seated in foul territory near the right field line moved quickly to avoid being hit by Rajai Davis’ foul line drive in the eight. The ball boy leaned back in his chair with his legs going in the air as the ball hit off the front of the stands a couple of feet away.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: RHP Justin Grimm (stiff lower back) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha. He appeared in 10 of Kansas City’s first 19 games before being placed on the disabled list on April 24.

Indians: CF Bradley Zimmer (bruised chest) was out of the lineup again and a trip to the disabled list is possible if he’s not ready in the next day or two. Zimmer has appeared in one game since crashing into the wall at Yankee Stadium on May 5. … LHP Ryan Merritt (shoulder inflammation) has been shut down for three to five days on his minor league rehab assignment.

UP NEXT

Royals LHP Eric Skogland (1-2, 6.34 ERA) takes on Rays LHP Ryan Yarbrough (2-2, 4.30 ERA) in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Indians RHP Carlos Carrasco (5-1, 3.61 ERA) faces Tigers RHP Mike Fiers (3-2, 4.73 ERA) as the teams begin a three-game set at Comerica Park.

Orioles beat Royals for 2nd winning streak of season

BALTIMORE (AP) – Adam Jones homered, scored three runs and had three RBIs, and the Baltimore Orioles outslugged the Kansas City Royals 11-6 Thursday night to emerge with their second winning streak of the season.

Manny Machado and Trey Mancini also went deep for the Orioles, who trailed 4-0 in the first inning and 6-3 in the second before rallying to beat the Royals for the second night in a row. The only other time Baltimore (10-27) won successive games this season was April 5-6 at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles had seven extra-base hits and eclipsed their previous season high of eight runs by the fourth inning.

Miguel Castro (1-1) replaced ineffective starter Chris Tillman and blanked Kansas City over 4 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.

Salvador Perez hit a grand slam for the Royals, who were seeking their second series win of the year.

Staked to a 4-0 lead before taking the mound, Ian Kennedy (1-4) left with the Royals down 9-6. He went four innings and allowed eight hits, including three home runs.

At least he lasted longer than Tillman, who yielded six runs and got only four outs.

Tillman has given up 13 runs over 2 1/3 innings in his last two starts, raising his ERA over seven starts to an unsightly 10.46.

After starting Tuesday night’s game at Camden Yards with a 10-run first inning, the Royals settled for a four-run first in the finale. A single and two walks set the table for Perez, who ripped an 0-2 pitch from Tillman over the right-field scoreboard.

Machado connected with a man on in the bottom half to make it 4-3, but Tillman gave up a two-run single by Jorge Soler in the second, prompting his early exit.

Jones hit a two-run shot in the third to get Baltimore to 6-5, and the Orioles completed the comeback in the fourth.

After Chance Sisco doubled in two runs, Mancini followed with his fourth home run.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: CF Abraham Almonte did not play because he was still experiencing symptoms of the illness that caused him to be removed from Wednesday night’s game. … RHP Justin Grimm (back stiffness) threw a bullpen session and could start a rehab assignment next week, manager Ned Yost said.

Orioles: An MRI on RHP Darren O’Day’s hyperextended elbow was “remarkably clean,” manager Buck Showalter said. There is no indication yet whether O’Day can come off the DL when eligible on May 16. … INF Engelb Vielma fractured his kneecap when he tripped over the bullpen mound while chasing a foul ball in a minor league game. Vielma played in six games with Baltimore this season.

UP NEXT

Royals: Still looking for his first win, Jason Hammel (0-4, 4.78 ERA) makes his eighth start of the year Friday night as KC opens a three-game series in Cleveland.

Orioles: Kevin Gausman (2-2, 3.30) helps Baltimore open a four-game series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. The right-hander has lowered his ERA in each of his last six starts.

Hays softball ends regular season with Andover Central

Hays High hosted Andover Central on Thursday to close out their regular season schedules.  Both teams entered the day 9-9 and both already knew their fate in next week’s regional tournament.  The Lady Indians found out the day before they earned the top seed of the four team tournament that will be held in Buhler on Tuesday.

Game 1

Andover Central 13 – Hays 4

The Indians took an early 1-0 lead after an error on the Jaguars in the bottom of the first inning.  Andover Central answered back with three in the second, including a two run home run, and two more runs in the third.

Hays couldn’t take advantage of runners on the base path in the second and third inning while Andover Central added another three runs in the fourth.  Kalei Cline, who homered in the second inning, added another in the fourth to open a second three run inning that pushed the advantage for the Jaguars to 8-1.

Hays scored a second run on a throwing error in fifth inning for an 8-2 score.  Andover Central tacked on five more runs in the top of the seventh inning to end any thoughts of a comeback in game one.  The Indians scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 13-4 final.

Kaitlyn Brown took the loss in game one.

Game 2

Hays 12 – Andover Central 9

Highlights

Each team recorded three hits and an error in the first inning of game two.  The result was a 3-2 lead for Andover Central.  The Jaguars increased the lead to three once again with two runs in the top half of the second.  Down 5-2, Hays used four hits and three hit batters to score five runs in the bottom of the second to take their first lead of game two.

The Indians increased their lead to three following a two run third with all the runs scoring with two outs.  Hays led 9-6 entering the fourth but Andover Central pushed three across the plate to tie things up at nine a piece.

Hays again answered and did so with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.  Cassidy Prough singled home a run to regain the lead and then Kaitlyn Brown doubled in two runs for a 12-9 lead.

Each team went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings for the first zeroes posted in game two.  Before the fifth Andover Central changed pitchers to their game one winner Audrey Orlowski.  While Orlowski held Hays scoreless for the fifth and sixth, Jaysa Wichers did the same to the Jaguars in the fifth, sixth and seventh for a Hays High 12-9 victory.

Both Hays and Andover Central finish the regular season at 10-10.

Coach Erin Wagner

Hays moves on to the regional tournament in Buhler next Tuesday.  The Indians are the one seed and will face 0-20 Buhler at 3:00.  6-14 Abilene will play 4-16 McPherson at 4:30.  The winners will play for a spot at the state tournament at around 6:00.

Three Tigers named to All-MIAA baseball team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three student-athletes from the Fort Hays State baseball team have earned a spot on the 2018 All-MIAA roster, announced Thursday (May 10) by the league office. Seniors Alex Weiss (second team, third base) and Dayton Pomeroy (honorable mention, first base) were joined by junior Addison Kaasch (third team, utility) on this year’s all-conference lineup.

This is the 12th consecutive season the Tigers have had at least one player named to the All-MIAA second team or higher, dating back to 2007 when they joined the league.

Weiss picked up All-MIAA honors for the second time in his career after earning an honorable mention nod as a junior in 2016. The Wellington, Kan. native was the only Tiger to start all 50 games this season, leading the team with 112 total bases. Weiss posted a slash line of .343/.391/.526, leading the team and ranking seventh in the MIAA with 73 hits. He recorded a hit in an astounding 42 games, including 15-straight late in the year. Twenty-three of Weiss’ hits went for extra bases, including eight home runs.

Kaasch earned a spot on the third team after leading the team with a .354 batting average. The utility man started 47 games this season at five different positions (SS 25 games, LF 13, DH 5, 3B 3, 2B 1). He also led the team with a .535 slugging percentage and a .431 on-base percentage thanks to 24 walks. The Parker, Colo. native picked up a team-best 26 extra-base hits, including 19 doubles, four triples and three home runs. He ranked third in the MIAA in triples, fourth in doubles and ninth in hits (70). Kaasch collected just the seventh 5-hit game for a Tiger in the last 10 years when he finished 5-for-5 with three doubles and one triple against Central Oklahoma (3/18/18).

Pomeroy powered his way to a spot on the honorable mention list thanks to a team-best 13 home runs, fourth-most in the league. He reached base in each of the first 23 games of the season, the longest such streak for the Tigers this season. The Topeka, Kan. native added 10 doubles and one triple, allowing nearly half of his 52 hits to go for extra bases (24). He drove in 39 RBI on the year, including multiple RBI in a team-high 12 games.

Orioles beat Royals to end 7-game skid

BALTIMORE (AP) – Mark Trumbo delivered a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning, Chris Davis homered and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 Wednesday night to end a seven-game losing streak.

Jonathan Schoop had two hits and scored twice for the Orioles, who lost 18 of their previous 21 games.

Lucas Duda homered and drove in three runs for the Royals.

With two outs in the eighth, Manny Machado legged out a slow roller to third base for an infield single and Schoop sent him to third with a double. Trumbo then hit a liner up the middle that knocked Kansas City pitcher Kevin McCarthy (3-1) off his feet.

Richard Bleier (3-0) worked two innings and Brad Brach got three outs for his fourth save, striking out Jon Jay to end it with runners on second and third.

Orioles starter Andrew Cashner gave up three runs and six hits in six innings, his sixth straight outing without a victory.

Kansas City rookie Eric Skoglund allowed three runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings in his 11th career start.

Unlike on Tuesday night, when the first eight Royals reached base in a 10-run first inning, Cashner kept Kansas City hitless into the fourth. With two outs, Salvador Perez singled and Duda ripped an 0-1 pitch over the center-field wall.

In the bottom half, singles by Adam Jones and Schoop preceded a two-out, opposite-field shot to left by Davis. It was his second homer in two nights after he connected only twice through his first 31 games.

Kansas City tied it in the sixth when Jorge Soler doubled and scored on two-out bloop single by Duda. The Royals then loaded the bases before Cashner retired Alcides Escobar on a comebacker.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: CF Abraham Almonte left in the sixth with an illness. … RHP Justin Grimm (lower back stiffness) is getting closer to starting a rehabilitation assignment. On the DL since April 22, he threw live batting practice on Tuesday. “Felt really good, looked really good,” manager Ned Yost said.

Orioles: Relief pitcher Darren O’Day was placed on the 10-day DL with a hyperextended right elbow. … Baltimore closer Zach Britton (Achilles tendon) threw a bullpen. Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Bundy could pitch in a minor league game before the end of the month, but “probably” not before May 28.

LOSING HURTS

Baltimore’s rocky start has been tough on everyone in the organization, including Showalter. “This game can beat up on anybody,” he said. “I didn’t need to have the period we’re in right now to remind me of that.”

UP NEXT

Royals: Ian Kennedy (1-3, 2.92 ERA) starts Thursday for the Royals, who will seek to win their second series of the year. Kennedy is 0-2 with a 6.98 ERA in five career appearances against Baltimore.

Orioles: Chris Tillman (1-5, 9.24) has yielded at least four runs in four of his five starts. In his last outing, the right-hander gave up seven runs and seven hits in one inning against the Angels.

Perkins Finishes Tied for 30th at Central Regional

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Fort Hays State women’s golfer Hannah Perkins wrapped up her junior campaign at the 2018 NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Championship this week. Perkins finished the tournament in a tie for 30th individually. The junior fired a final round 8-over (80) on Wednesday (May 9) to finish at 14-over (230) for the week.

“I wasn’t hitting the ball good and wasn’t able to get up and down from off the green,” said Perkins.

Perkins finished the season with a 78.5 scoring average over the course of 22 rounds played. The Wichita, Kan. native posted her lowest score of the season in the first round of the Central Regional (May 7) when she fired an even-par (72) round. Perkins picked up 38 pars and three birdies throughout the week.

“We didn’t hit as many greens in regulation today,” said Rich Guffey. “We need to work on reading greens better and making putts.”

Augustana took home the team title with an aggregate score of 890. Lindenwood claimed a runner-up finish with a 900, while Arkansas Tech (902) finished third. Kali Trautman of Augustana captured the individual title with a 1-under par (215) finish for the week.

After concluding his eighth year as the skipper at FHSU last week, Johnson now ranks fifth in coaching victories all-time at FHSU (162-228). The Salisbury, Mo. native led the team to three MIAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the championship game in 2012.

Johnson coached 37 All-MIAA performers in his first seven seasons in Hays, including 10 All-Region selections and one All-America honoree. Heading into this season, 105 student-athletes had been listed on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll under his tutelage.

Johnson came to FHSU from Butler (Kan.) Community College, where he was head coach for seven years. While at Butler, Johnson compiled a record of 235-155. He led the program to at least 30 wins in his last six seasons and an NJCAA World Series appearance in 2006. The Grizzlies were co-champions of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division three times in Johnson’s tenure. He was twice named the Jayhawk Western Division Coach of the Year (2005 and 2007) and was the NJCAA Central District and ABCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2006.

In seven years at Butler, Johnson coached five all-region selections and 34 all-conference selections. Four of his players were selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Six former players went on to play professional baseball. He also had six players earn NJCAA Academic All-American honors.

Prior to becoming the head coach at Butler Community College, Johnson spent eight years as an assistant with three different successful programs. His last two years (2002 and 2003) as an assistant were at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he was the pitching coach and chief recruiter. He helped the Indians to the 2002 Southland Conference Championship. He was assistant coach at Barton (Kan.) Community College for four years (1998-2001), helping the Cougars average 30 wins per season in his time with the program. Johnson started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Fort Hays State for two years (1996 and 1997). He helped the Tigers to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship and finish runner-up in the school’s first ever NCAA Division II West Regional appearance. In his eight years as an assistant, he coached 10 pitchers that went on to play professional baseball, with two making it to the Major League level. Combining the three institutions together, Johnson had a record of 262-190 as an assistant coach.

Johnson played collegiate baseball for three years. He played two years at Barton (Kan.) Community College from 1989 to 1990, earning All-KJCCC and All-Region 6 honors. He went on to play one year at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where he was named MVP of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. That year, UAB made their first of two NCAA regional appearances in school history. In 1992, Johnson signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and played five seasons in professional baseball.

In 2000, Johnson was inducted into the El Dorado (Kan.) Baseball Hall of Fame for his performance with the El Dorado Broncos summer collegiate team during the 1990 and 1991 campaigns.

A nationwide search for the 15th head baseball coach in program history will begin immediately.
