TMP 55, Wellsville 40

HUTCHINSON, Kan-TMP trailed early but not often in the their 55-40 win over Wellsville in the opening round of the 3A State Basketball tournament in Hutchinson Thursday night. The Lady Monarchs were able to grab a 17-13 lead after the first quarter of play. TMP was able to continue their late first quarter success in to the second quarter.

The Lady Monarchs saw their lead cut to two midway through the quarter but that’s when the number two ranked team in the state kicked it into gear. They would finish the half on an 8-0 run thanks to some domination on the boards from Savannah Yost and Kayla Vitztum and some timely shots from Adell Riedel and Bailey Lacy. TMP would have a double digit lead, 28-18, at the break.

The third quarter was a slow start for TMP as it took them just over three and a half minutes to score. But it didn’t seem to matter as Wellsville couldn’t find the bucket either. The Lady Eagles cut the TMP lead to 28-20 and again the Lady Monarchs responded with a 9-2 run to end the quarter and they took a commanding 38-23 lead into the fourth quarter.

TMP expanded that lead to 20 points in the final quarter before settling for the 15 point win. Wellsvile was led by Sydney Dwyer wit 20 points and Demi Aamold with 11. The Lady Eagles finish their season at 18-5. TMP had nine players score led by 17 from Vitztum and 10 each from Jillian Lowe and Aubrey Koenigsman. Vitztum and Yost also pulled down 12 rebounds each.

The Lady Monarchs, the number three seed, improve their record to 21-2 and will play the seventh seeded Royal Valley Panthers who upset second seeded Nemaha Central 51-48. That game will tipoff at 3pm Friday afternoon.

K-State survives TCU 66-64 in OT in Big 12 quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas State’s Barry Brown scored the go-ahead layup with 11.2 seconds left in overtime, and Alex Robinson missed a pair of foul shots at the other end for TCU, allowing the Wildcats to escape with a 66-64 victory in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Horned Frogs, who forced OT on Desmond Bane’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer, had the ball with the game tied at 64 and 34.5 seconds to go. But when Robinson’s pass was deflected out of bounds, a video review showed TCU’s Vladimir Brodziansky touched it last and Kansas State was given the ball.

Brown was fouled while converting a driving layup, but he missed the free throw.

At the other end, Robinson drove down the right side of the lane and was fouled by Makol Mawien with 1.3 seconds left. But the 60-percent foul shooter missed the first of two free throws, forcing him to miss the second, and the Wildcats corralled the rebound to seal the win.

Mawien finished with 16 points, and Xavier Sneed and Dean Wade scored 12 apiece for the fourth-seeded Wildcats (22-10), who advanced to play Kansas or Oklahoma State in Friday night’s semifinals.

Kenrich Williams led the Horned Frogs (21-11) with 20 points. Robinson contributed 16 points on 6-for-15 shooting, and he finished with seven turnovers – none more costly than the last.

The teams couldn’t have played a more even first half, swapping the lead seven times with seven ties and ending 30-all at the break. Both were 2 of 8 from beyond the arc, the Wildcats shot 48 percent from the field and the Horned Frogs shot 52, and neither team made a free throw.

Hardly a surprise, given the teams split in the regular-season with each winning at home.

TCU finally put together the first big run in the opening minutes of the second half. Robinson started it with a free throw and ended it with a jumper, and Williams added five points during the 11-0 spurt, which gave the Horned Frogs a 43-34 lead with 14 1/2 minutes to go.

Kansas State clawed right back thanks to a series of Horned Frogs miscues. At one point, Robinson turned it over three times in a span of four possessions, then blew a wide open layup in transition.

Cartier Diarra scored at the other end for Kansas State, knotting the game 53-all.

Kansas State kept the momentum going, edging ahead 59-56 when the Horned Frogs’ J.D. Miller was called for basket interference with 52.3 seconds left. But after Williams missed at the other end for TCU, coach Jamie Dixon elected to play defense rather than foul the Wildcats.

Brown’s long 3-pointer missed with eight seconds left, and that gave Bane enough time – by a fraction of a second – to hit his only basket of the game and force overtime.

BIG PICTURE

TCU had never lost to the Wildcats in the postseason, beating them in the NCAA, NIT and Big 12 tournaments over the years. It also ended a streak of three straight conference tournaments in which the Horned Frogs had won at least one game.

Kansas State won four of six to finish the regular season, and now should feel comfortable about an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament despite its pillow-soft non-conference schedule.

Royals sign veteran Nolasco to minor league contract

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals signed veteran right-hander Ricky Nolasco to a minor league contract on Wednesday with an invitation to spring training.

He will get $1.5 million if he makes the major league roster and could earn another $250,000 in performances bonuses. He also can opt out of the contract on March 24 if he’s not added to the 25-man big league roster.

Nolasco went 6-15 with a 4.92 ERA in 33 starts last season with the Los Angeles Angels. He has a career record of 114-118 with the Marlins, Angels, Dodgers and Twins in 330 career games, 312 of them starts, over 12 years.

Nolasco would add depth to a rotation that includes Danny Duffy, Ian Kennedy, Jason Hammel, Jakob Junis and Nathan Karns.

Jayhawks’ Azubuike injures knee, out for Big 12 tourney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas forward Udoka Azubuike sprained his left knee during a scrimmage this week, ruling him out of the Big 12 Tournament and putting his availability for the NCAA Tournament in question.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self said Wednesday that Azubuike hurt the medial collateral ligament in his knee the previous day. The medical staff called it a “Grade 1” sprain and Azubuike will be evaluated again on Sunday, though Self hopes to have him back on the court next week.

The ninth-ranked and top-seeded Jayhawks open the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday.

Azubuike is averaging 13.7 points and 7.1 rebounds this season. The 7-footer has given the Jayhawks their only significant inside presence.

Phillipsburg tops TMP

Phillipsburg 67, TMP 44

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-It was a first quarter battle between Mid Continent League rivals as TMP and Phillipsburg tangled in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson. It was a back and fourth game with TMP leadin by four points midway through the first quarter. The Panthers would answer and eventually tie the game at nine. Phillipsburg would flex their muscles and score 11 of the last 14 points to take a 20-12 lead after one quarter.

The Panthers would not let up in the second quarter. They scored the first five points of quarter and never looked back leading 45-26 at halftime. The Panthers slowed things up on TMP in the third quarter with a big lead and cruised in the second half to the 67-44 win.

Michael Lager was the only Monarch in double figures with 11 points. TMP finishes their season at 17-6. Phillipsburg had three in double figures led by Trey Sides with 15, Jordan Ford 14 and Ty Sides 10. The Panthers improve to 22-1 on the year and will face the Cheney/Perry Lecompton winner at 8:15pm on Friday night.

Jon Jay agrees to $3 million, 1-year contract with Royals

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – Outfielder Jon Jay agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals, a deal that allows him to earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses.

Jay, who turns 33 on March 15, hit .296 with two homers and 34 RBIs in 141 games last season with the Chicago Cubs, including 13 for 40 (.325) as a pinch hitter.

His deal, announced Tuesday, is a large cut from his $8 million salary last year.

Jay did not commit an error in 141 chances last season and has gone 141 games without an error since April 15, 2016. As a left-handed hitter, he was attractive to the predominantly right-handed-hitting Royals.

Right-hander Jesse Hahn was placed on the 60-day disabled list to open a roster spot. Hahn, acquired from Oakland during the offseason, has a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament. He had Tommy John surgery in 2010 and felt discomfort in his elbow during a start last Thursday.
