McDuffie leads No. 13 Wichita State past SMU

DALLAS (AP) — Markis McDuffie scored a season-high 26 points off the bench, including nine during the first four minutes of the second half, to lead No. 13 Wichita State to an 84-78 win over SMU on Saturday.

The Shockers (23-5, 13-3 American Athletic Conference) have won six straight games and are one-half game behind first-place Cincinnati. Wichita State will host Cincinnati on March 4 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

SMU (16-13, 6-10) lost for the sixth time in seven games since leading scorer Shake Milton (18 points per game) was sidelined with a hand injury.

McDuffie added to Wichita State’s 37-35 halftime lead on the first possession of the second half with a midcourt steal leading to a three-point play. A 10-1 run put the Shockers ahead 56-43 with 12:18 to play, and they led by as many as 17 points.

McDuffie, a junior forward, led Wichita State in scoring last season but missed this season’s first 11 games because of a stress fracture. He has primarily been a reserve since returning.

Jahmal McMurray led SMU with 28 points. McMurray has topped the Mustangs in scoring in five of the past six games.

Shaquille Morris had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Wichita State. Landry Shamet returned after missing the Shockers’ previous game because of illness and scored 10 points in 27 minutes, playing only eight first-half minutes because of foul trouble.

Because of injuries and NCAA-mandated scholarship limitations, SMU played with seven scholarship players on Saturday and has had seven or fewer during its past seven games.

Wichita State failed to pull away during the first half despite a 21-12 rebounding advantage. The Mustangs shot 45.4 percent during the half and the Shockers 41.4 percent, both hitting six 3-pointers.

Wichita State got even for one of its two home losses this season, 83-78 on Jan. 17.

BIG PICTURE

Wichita State: The Shockers are 8-2 in true road games this season with one to play. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, they lead Division I in road wins (48) and road winning percentage (.857). They avoided a conference opponent’s sweep of a two-game season series for the first time since 2012-13 (Evansville, Missouri Valley).

SMU: The Mustangs opened the season 12-3, including wins over then-No. 2 Arizona and then-No. 14 USC, but have since gone 4-10. SMU will finish with a losing league record after winning the AAC last season at 17-1.

Hays finishes the season at Great Bend with a sweep

Girls

#8 Hays 50 – Great Bend 47

Friday night’s regular season finale in Great Bend did not start well for Hays.  The Lady Indians made just one of their first ten shots and just one of six free throws.  The Lady Panthers led 12-3 after one quarter and then scored the first four points of the second quarter for a 16-3 lead.  Hays scored five straight to get the lead down to eight and stole the inbound pass but couldn’t score.  Great Bend pulled back ahead by 14 on a pair of three pointers before Hays scored the final three points of the half to trail 22-11 at half time.

Highlights

Great Bend took a 13 point lead on the first basket of the third quarter at 24-11.  The Lady Indians slowly started chipping into that lead through the remainder of the quarter.  Over seven minutes Hays outscored the Panthers 19-7 to get back within a point at 31-30.  Great Bend scored the final two points of the third quarter and then the first two of the fourth quarter to establish their biggest fourth quarter lead at 35-30.  The Lady Indians tied the game for the first time all night at 35 with 6:10 remaining on a Kallie Leiker field goal.

The first lead for Hays came with 3:45 left in the game.  A three pointer from Tasiah Nunnery put Hays up 40-38.  The lead changed hands six more times over the next two and a half minutes.  The final lead change coming on a Isabel Robben’s fourth three pointer as 1:00 showed on the clock.  Great Bend had three final possessions where they turned the ball over each time.  Hays hit two of four free throws to take a 50-47 win.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays was led by the 17 from Isabel Robben.  Kallie Leiker tied a career high with 13.  After going 3-25 from the field in the first half, the Lady Indians were 13-25 in the second half and made 7 of their 13 three point shots.

#8 Hays finishes the year at 13-7 and second in the Western Athletic Conference at 6-2.  Great Bend falls to 3-17 and 1-7.

Boys

Hays 60 – Great Bend 36

A 17-0 run by Hays in the first quarter put little doubt into the evening in Great Bend.  The Indians had already wrapped up the the WAC title on Tuesday night and showed no let down on Friday.  After the game was tied at three through the first minute, Cole Murphy hit a three pointer and sparked the 17-0 run.  Hays led by 16 after one quarter and by half time led 38-13, finishing the half on a 9-0 run.

Highlights

Hays continued their first half 9-0 by scoring the first nine points of the second half and taking a commanding 47-13 lead.  The Indians entered the fourth quarter with a 56-24 lead to enforce the continuous clock fourth quarter.  Great Bend ended the game on a 9-0 run to close the final margin down to 60-36.

Coach Rick Keltner

The Indians were led by Kyler Koenke with 13 points.  Three more players scored nine points and another added eight in the victory.  Hays improves to 14-6 on the season and finishes the Western Athletic Conference at 8-0.  Great Bend falls to 4-16 and 2-6.

The Indians will play Buhler in the first round of sub-state next week as the number two seen in McPherson.

Late rally comes up short for FHSU softball against Augustana

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – A four-run fifth inning by Augustana was too much for Fort Hays State to overcome in a 4-3 loss on Friday evening (Feb. 23) in the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament. The Tigers scored a run in the seventh to get within one, but it was not enough as they moved to 2-11 on the season. Augustana moved to 5-4.

The Tigers took the lead early with a run in the bottom of the third on a Tess Gray RBI single. Candace Bollig drew a walk and eventually came in to score from second on Gray’s hit.

Hailey Chapman cruised through the first four innings, allowing just one hit, before running into trouble in the fifth. She allowed a double and single, then Sierra Rodriguez relieved in her place. Rodriguez could not stop the Vikings’ momentum as an infield single loaded the bases, then a single down the left field line plated two runs. A double plated two more and all of the sudden Augustana led 4-1.

The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Lily Sale led off the inning with a single and eventually came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Grace Philop. With one out, though, the Tigers could not push any more runs across, stranding runners at second and third.

The Tigers threatened to tie the game in their last at bat as Sale reached base to start the inning by error. She came in to score on a one-out RBI double by Bollig. However, a strikeout and groundout ended the game with the tying run in scoring position.

Chapman took the loss for FHSU since the first two runners to cross the plate in the fifth were her responsibility. She allowed three hits and struck out three. Rodriguez allowed five hits and struck out one in three innings of relief.

Lexy Pederson benefitted from her team taking the lead in the top of the fifth before she handed the ball over to Amber Elliott to close out the last three innings. Pederson moved to 3-0, throwing 4.0 innings with six hits, a walk, and one strikeout. Elliott allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and four strikeouts to earn her first save of the year.

The Tigers return to action with one game on Saturday against the University of Sioux Falls, scheduled at 3:30 pm.

Game Highlights

The Tigers (23-5, 14-5 MIAA) got off to a great start, scoring the first 13 points only to see the Bearcats (15-12, 7-11 MIAA) hit four first quarter threes to pull within five at the end of the first quarter. They pushed the lead as high as 15 with 3:04 to play in the second only to see the Bearcats close on a 10-2 run to pull within seven at 48-41.

SBU extended the run to 21-4 in the third quarter and build a three point lead. They used a 10-0 run to go up six with just over seven minutes to play in the fourth before the Tigers answered with a 9-2 run to retake the lead at 86-85 with 2:13 to play. Laura Vierkant hit a three for the Bearcats with 54 seconds left to put the Bearcats up two. Lanie Page answered with a basket eight seconds later to tie the game. The Tigers fell behind by three in the overtime but closed extra period on an 8-2 run to secure the win.

Kacey Kennett scored 17 for the Tigers. Emma Stroyon, the team’s lone senior, added 15 and Carly Heim added 12 and played 42 minutes.

Brown’s 14 second-half points pushes Kansas State past Texas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Barry Brown scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and Kansas State pulled away late to beat Texas 58-48 on Wednesday night.

In what was a cold shooting affair for both teams, the last five minutes saw Kansas State (20-8, 9-6 Big 12 Conference) close on a 16-4 run. Brown had the hot hand as he knocked down five free throws, two layups and a backbreaking 3-pointer in the final 4:49.

The Wildcats shot 42 percent but just 3 of 13 (23 percent) from long range. Texas (16-12, 6-9) shot 29 percent overall and missed 16 of 18 3-pointers.

Dean Wade added 13 points for Kansas State. Cartier Diarra had 12 points and Xavier Sneed chipped in nine with a game-high 13 rebounds for the Wildcats.

Matt Coleman scored 14 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the free-throw line to lead Texas. Dylan Osetkowski finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Coleman made six free throws and Mohamed Bamba added a dunk during a 8-2 surge to give the Longhorns a 44-42 lead with 5:12 left before Kansas State pulled away.

Late miscues by the Tigers aided the Lopers in escaping a game where neither team built more than a six-point lead. FHSU moved to 16-11 overall, 9-9 in the MIAA, while UNK evened the regular season series with FHSU and improved to 14-13 overall, 10-8 in the MIAA.

Game Highlights

Both teams struggled offensively in the early going as UNK was the first to climb over 10 points at the 12:04 mark of the first half. A 7-0 run by UNK produced its biggest lead of the game, 15-9, with 10:29 to go. But, the Tigers chipped away and took the lead eventually, 26-24, before the count at halftime settled at a 29-29 tie.

FHSU had the upper hand early in the second half, coming out of the break on a 6-0 run to build its largest lead of six points, 35-29, at the 17:55 mark. Hadley Gillum opened the scoring with a basket that pushed him over the 1,000-point mark in his career at FHSU. He is the 20th player in program history to reach 1,000. Gillum scored all 15 of his points on the night after halftime. Brady Werth, who chipped in a pair of baskets in the run, went on to lead the Tigers with 17 points.

Even with the early run, the Tigers could not shake the Lopers and the teams battled in a tight contest the rest of the way through. From the 12:43 mark all the way to the end of the game, neither team built a lead larger than four points.

Down by three with under a minute to play, UNK fouled Marcus Cooper on a stickback bucket off an offensive rebound. He sunk the free throw to tie the game for the 12th time, 62-62. Cooper finished the game with 13 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

With the game tied, UNK called timeout with 21 seconds remaining to set up offense with the shot clock off. However, on the inbounds, Cooper overplayed the ball and fouled Lane Rohrich, who went to the line and sunk 1-of-2 attempts. FHSU still had a chance to win the game, but Kyler Kinnamon opted to go to the basket with 10 seconds remaining and his running layup attempt was off the mark.

Isaiah McKay of UNK went to the free-throw line and dropped a pair of shots, giving UNK a three-point lead. FHSU still had a chance to tie, but Grant Holmes had the ball stolen away beyond the three-point line on the right wing and could not get a potential tying shot off.

Fort Hays State shot only 34.9 percent from the field and 27.8 percent beyond the three-point line. UNK was worse beyond the arc at 23.5 percent, but managed to shoot 42.3 percent overall from the field.

The Tigers fell for a fifth straight time in Kearney and now Thursday night’s game (Feb. 22) against Southwest Baptist will be critical to lock up a first-round home game in the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers, for the time being, slide to eighth in the conference standings. Senior night tip-off is set for 7:30 pm at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Hadley Gillum, the lone senior on the team, will be honored before the game.
