FHSU women’s basketball returns home to host Bluejays

The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team will take a break from conference play when the Tabor Bluejays make the trip to Hays on Wednesday (Dec. 13). First tip is set for 7 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Tigers will gladly return home, where they are 5-0 this season, after dropping a pair of road contests last week. FHSU enters the non-conference affair 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA, while Tabor is 8-3 on the year and 6-1 in KCAC. The Bluejays rank 17th in the latest NAIA Division II Coaches’ Poll.

Tony Hobson Weekly Press Conference

Emma Stroyan

Fort Hays State has dominated the all-time series with Tabor in every sense of the word, winning all 18 contests. The Bluejays lost by just three points twice in the ’70s, but FHSU has won 15-straight by double-figures. The Tigers are 14-0 against Tabor at home and 6-0 in the series under head coach Tony Hobson.

The Tigers easily dispatched of the Bluejays in their most recent meeting last season, cruising to a wire-to-wire 71-38 victory. FHSU made 15 steals in the win, with 11 different Tigers recording a takeaway. Kacey Kennett led all returners with 13 points while Emma Stroyan added 11 points and a career-high five blocks.

The well-balanced Tiger offense now features six players averaging seven or more points, with all six leading the Tigers in scoring in at least one game so far this season. Stroyan led the team with points per game last week thanks to a 7-for-7 effort from the charity stripe and a trio of 3-pointers, giving her more in the last two games than she had in her first 36 games as a Tiger (2).

Tabor has reached the NAIA Division II tournament each of the last four years, reaching the Sweet 16 three years in a row after advancing to the Elite Eight in 2015 and 2016. Morgan Ediger leads Tabor with 16.5 points and 1.7 steals per game. Taylor Deniston dishes out three assists each night while ranking second on the team with 10.3 points per outing. Kristyn Wedel grabs a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game while recording one block per contest.

Broncos end 8-game skid with win over Jets

DENVER (AP) – The Broncos snapped their longest losing streak since joining the NFL in 1970 with a 23-0 shutout of the New York Jets on Sunday thanks to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas’ big game and a return of Denver’s stingy defense.

Trevor Siemian threw for 200 yards and his favorite target was Thomas , who caught eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown as the Broncos (4-9) avoided tying their franchise futility record of nine consecutive losses set way back in 1967.

This was their first win in 70 days – and their first shutout since Nov. 20, 2005, a 27-0 win over the Jets, was fueled by a defense that held New York in check all afternoon.

The Jets (5-8) were limited to just 100 yards of offense, 59 on the ground and 41 through the air.

Jets quarterback Josh McCown was knocked from the game twice by hard hits, including a clean shot by pass rusher Shane Ray in the third quarter that left McCown with an injured left hand.

McCown finished just 6 of 12 for 46 yards, and his replacement, Bryce Petty was 2 of 9 for 14 yards.

After their opening drive stalled at the Jets 13, the Broncos settled for a 31-yard field goal by Brandon McManus. On the Jets’ third snap of their first possession, linebacker Brandon Marshall sliced through for a strip sack and defensive end Adam Gotsis recovered McCown’s fumble at the Jets 20-yard line.

Two plays later, Siemian hit Thomas for the 20-yard score, giving Denver its first double-digit lead since Oct. 1 against Oakland, the date of their last victory.

McManus missed from 29 yards in the second quarter but his 53-yarder just before halftime gave the Broncos a 13-0 lead heading into the locker room.

In the third quarter, running back C.J. Anderson thought he had a 14-yard touchdown catch but he was ruled him out an inch shy of the goal line. After he failed to punch it in twice, fullback Andy Janovich bullied his way into the end zone for a 20-0 lead.

INJURIES:

Jets running back Elijah McGuire (ankle) and long snapper Thomas Hennessy (head) were knocked out of the game in the first half. McCown briefly left in the second quarter after he was sandwiched by Aqib Talib and Jamal Carter – before being hammered by Ray in the third quarter.

The Broncos lost starting safety Justin Simmons to an ankle injury in the first quarter and was replaced by Will Parks. Inside linebacker Todd Davis was evaluated for a possible concussion in the fourth quarter.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Thomas’ TD catch was the 56th of his career, surpassing Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe for second in franchise history. Wide receiver Rod Smith’s 68 TD receptions are the most all-time.

BAD DRAFT? A snapshot of why the Broncos have fallen so far from their Super Bowl title just 22 months ago: among their inactives Sunday were these members of the 2017 draft class who were healthy scratches: CB Brendan Langley, RB De’Angelo Henderson and PR Isaiah McKenzie, who was benched for the second time after committing his sixth fumble.

Five Tiger wrestlers place at RWC Jet Invite; Osaghae claims first individual title

WICHITA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State wrestling team finished fourth place as a team after recording 65 team points in the Reece Wright-Conklin Jet Invitational on Sunday (Dec. 10). He rebounded well when we defeated Jake Hattabaugh of Newman in the second round with a 9-3 decision. Lewis dropped his round match to Will Steltzlen of Central Oklahoma by pin in 1:21. He earned a 4-0 decision over Dakota Schutter of Truman State in the fourth round. Lewis pinned Madison Leanio of Kansas Wesleyan in 4:44 in the fifth round. Lewis finished the day with a 3-2 record.

Efe Osaghae opened his day in the 157-pound weight class with a first round pin of Devin Conklin from Kansas Wesleyan in 2:20. He defeated Zeke Rubio of Northeastern Oklahoma in third round match with a 15-3 major decision. Osaghae defeated Tyler Mies of Newman with a 6-3 decision in the fourth round. He ended his day with a 2-1 record.

Marty Verhaeghe started off his day on a good note with a 15-3 major decision over Zach Taylor of Truman State in the first round. Verhaeghe dropped his match in the second round to Wyatt Jordan of Northeastern Oklahoma by a 13-0 major decision. He pinned Noah Perkins of Newman in the third round in 4:27. Verhaeghe dropped his fourth round match to Mason Thompson of Central Oklahoma in a 9-3 decision. He defeated Nick Desch of Bethany College with a 17-4 major decision in the fifth round. Verhaeghe finished his day with a 3-2 record.

Micquille Robinson was pinned in his first round match today at the hands of Alex Kauffman from Northeastern Oklahoma in 5:35. Robinson dropped his last two matches of the day to Noel Torres of Newman (6-1 decision) and Joel Dixon of Central Oklahoma (fall, 2:51).

Jordan Davis pinned his first opponent, Joe Steve of Bethany College, in 4:15. He defeated his second round opponent, Gus Boyd of Northeastern Oklahoma, with an 11-5 decision. Davis dropped his round three match to Colton Looper of Central Oklahoma via a fall in 1:34. He bounced back with back-to-back pins over Jules Joseph of Truman State (3:49) and Jacob Stoneberger of Newman (2:26). He finished his day with a 3-1 record.

The Tigers are back in action next weekend (Dec. 16-17) as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete at the Midwest Classic.

Hunt, defense spur Chiefs to victory over Raiders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kareem Hunt ran for 116 yards and a touchdown, the Chiefs shut down Derek Carr and Raiders offense and Kansas City held on to beat Oakland 26-15 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak.

The suddenly stingy Chiefs (7-6) also made a big statement in the crowded AFC West race. They entered the game tied atop the division standings with the Raiders (6-7) and the Chargers, who played Washington later Sunday and visit Kansas City on Saturday night.

Alex Smith threw for 268 yards and Charcandrick West had a touchdown run for the Chiefs, who held the Raiders without points until Marshawn Lynch’s 22-yard touchdown run with 8:51 to go.

By that point, the Chiefs were cruising toward their 14th win in 15 divisional games.

Carr was 24 of 41 for 211 yards with a touchdown and two picks, a far cry from his performance when the teams met in October. Carr threw for 417 yards and three touchdowns that day, including the winning toss to Michael Crabtree on the final play of the game.

That loss was part of a midseason swoon for Kansas City, which started 5-0 but lost six of seven to fall into a tie for the division lead — and put its once-solid playoff prospects in peril.

The Chiefs gave them a boost again Sunday behind a defense that was shredded by the New York Jets last week, and that was missing All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters.

The volatile young star was suspended by coach Andy Reid this week for a series of embarrassing incidents, including the throwing of an official’s flag into the stands in the Meadowlands.

The trio of Steven Nelson, Darrelle Revis and Terrance Mitchell more than made up for him.

So did Kansas City’s offense, which produced for the second straight week as offensive coordinator Matt Nagy called the plays. The Chiefs got four field goals from Harrison Butker, along with their two touchdown runs, and didn’t have to punt until the fourth quarter.

The Raiders tried to make it interesting late, recovering an onside kick after Lynch’s TD run. Carr connected with Jared Cook on fourth down for another score, and the 2-point conversion trimmed what had been a 26-0 deficit to 26-15 in a matter of minutes.

But after receiving the kickoff, the Chiefs’ Albert Wilson made a juggling catch to convert a third down, and that allowed the reigning AFC West champs to mostly run out the clock.

COOPER HURT

Raiders WR Amari Cooper was active after he was cleared of a concussion and a sprained left ankle was deemed OK. But he left in the second quarter with a right leg injury when he was blocking downfield on a run by DeAndre Washington, and a defender rolled into the back of him.

OTHER INJURIES

The Raiders also were missing two defensive starters in CB David Amerson (foot sprain) and LB Cory James (knee), while DE Mario Edwards Jr. (ankle) left early in the second quarter and TE Clive Walford went down in the fourth. The Chiefs missed starting C Mitch Morse with a sprained foot.

Holder leads No. 16 Arizona State to upset over No. 2 Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Tra Holder scored 29 points on 8-for-16 shooting, and No. 16 Arizona State pulled off a 95-85 upset of No. 2 Kansas on Sunday.

Shannon Evans II had 22 points and Remy Martin added 21 for the Sun Devils (9-0), who marched into Allen Fieldhouse and overpowered the Jayhawks (7-2). Arizona State shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 50.8 percent overall to hand Kansas its second straight loss.

After a slow start that forced coach Bobby Hurley to use a timeout less than two minutes into the game, Arizona State snapped back into it, trimming the deficit to just three points at halftime. The Sun Devils outscored the Jayhawks 58-42 in the second half.

It was another strong performance for Holder, who entered averaging 20.3 points per game. He had seven assists in addition to his 29 points.

Lagerald Vick led Kansas with 25 points, his fifth time eclipsing the 20-point mark this season. Devonte’ Graham added 19 points and eight assists.

Svi Mykhailiuk had an off day, going 3-for-14 from the field and not registering any of his 14 points until he hit a 3-pointer with 6 minutes left in the game. He had four turnovers and four fouls.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas lost consecutive games for the first time since December of 2013. Coach Bill Self will need to diagnose in a hurry what has gone wrong, with the start of conference play just three games away.

Arizona State picked up another marquee victory after knocking off No. 15 Xavier in late November. The Sun Devils are 9-0 for the first time since 1974-75 and look to be one of the top teams in the PAC-12.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Kansas will tumble further than already expected after falling to unranked Washington on Wednesday.

With another impressive win, Arizona State should continue its rise towards the top of the polls.

Etou scores 22 as Tulsa holds of Kansas State

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Junior Etou had 22 points and seven rebounds, Elijah Joiner buried a go-ahead 3-pointer in the closing minutes and Tulsa held off Kansas State 61-54 on Saturday night.

The Golden Hurricane (5-4) took the lead early in the second half, then withstood a back-and-forth affair before Joiner hit from the right wing with just over three minutes left in the game.

The Wildcats (8-2) had several chances to tie the game, but Dean Wade missed a 3-pointer and Barry Brown missed a short jumper and Kamau Stokes clanked another 3 off the back of the rim.

All told, Kansas State didn’t hit a field goal in the final five minutes, missing all nine of its attempts. The Wildcats were also just 4 for 31 from beyond the arc.

Xavier Sneed had two of the 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and eight boards, while Wade had 13 points and Stokes had 11. Barry Brown scored 10 but was 0 for 7 from 3-point range.

Tulsa improved to 6-1 against the Wildcats in a series dating to 1932.

The Golden Hurricane were playing without junior guard DaQuan Jeffries, their third-leading scorer at nearly 12 points a game, who has been dealing with a hand injury. And they could have used the extra ball-handler in the first half, which was dominated by sloppiness by both teams.

The Wildcats, who entered the game 13th nationally in scoring defense, forced Tulsa into as many turnovers (11) in the first half as made field goals. Etou had four of them as he struggled to deal with the pesky hands of the Wildcats’ perimeter players.

Still, the Golden Hurricane trailed just 30-27 at halftime, and they used an early flurry of points in the second half to pull ahead on Etou’s 3-pointer with 12:38 to go.

The game remained a nip-and-tuck affair down the stretch, neither team ever leading by more than six until the final seconds, when Tulsa was able to put things away.

BIG PICTURE

Tulsa won a defensive slugfest despite 15 turnovers, including eight from Etou. A big reason was the Golden Hurricane’s perimeter defense and work on the boards, where they out-rebounded the Wildcats 40-30 despite giving up several inches in the paint.

Kansas State was trying to match its best start by Bruce Weber, but instead watched its 23-game non-conference home win streak come to an end. The Wildcats considered the game at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita a home game, even though it was a 2-hour drive from their campus in Manhattan.

Tigers finish strong in win over Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. – Hadley Gillum recorded his third double-double of the season scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as Fort Hays State picked up their 100th all-time win over Emporia State Saturday, 69-58. It was also their sixth straight over the Hornets at White Auditorium.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

Brady Werth added 14 points before fouling out and Aaron Nicholson scored 10, all in the second half as the Tigers move to 3-1 in the MIAA and 7-3 overall. Nicholson went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. His first tied the game at 50. The second pushed the lead to eight with 2:29 to play.

FHSU used a 17-4 first half run to build a 10-point lead and were up nine at halftime. They quickly pushed the lead to 13 with 16:43 to play only to see the Hornets answer with a 20-4 run to get within three with 10:28 to play. The lead with still three with just under 10 minutes left when Nicholson scored five points in a 7-0 run.

The Tigers shot 51-percent for the game while holding the Hornets to a season-low 35-percent.

Shamet scores 30; No. 6 Wichita State tops Oklahoma State

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) – Wichita State’s Landry Shamet did it all, and his Shockers needed every bit of it to hold off a spirited upset bid from Oklahoma State.

The sophomore guard scored a career-high 30 points, and the sixth-ranked Shockers defeated the Cowboys 78-66 on Saturday.

Shamet only had 11 field goal attempts, but he made 14 of 16 free throws, including 10 of 12 in the second half.

“I thought on the offensive end, he was tremendous, rushing the basket, knocking down free throws and shooting the 3-ball,” Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said. “He’s just a complete player.”

Shamet took several hard hits in the game for his troubles. At one point, he collided with Oklahoma State’s Brandon Averette, and Averette crashed down onto his back. After Shamet told reporters he took a beating, Marshall told him he’d have Sunday off.

“I lead by example,” Shamet said. “I know what I do every day – I work hard, and these guys respect me and I respect them and it’s mutual. It’s ever-growing. I feel like I get more and more comfortable vocally, and I feel like with my play, I’m just trying to get more aggressive and lead by example.”

Conner Frankamp scored 14 points and Darral Willis, Jr. added 12 for the Shockers (8-1).

Wichita State’s only loss was by a point to Notre Dame. The Shockers won at Big 12 member Baylor last Saturday and now have built a solid non-conference resume.

“We obviously needed this challenge, going on the road to win on back-to-back Saturdays,” Marshall said. “It just helps us get better.”

Wichita State made 12 of 26 3-point attempts and outrebounded the Cowboys 36-26.

Tavarius Shine scored a career-high 20 points and Mitchell Solomon added a career-best 17 for Oklahoma State (7-2).

Oklahoma State first-year coach Mike Boynton was trying to get his first win over a ranked team. Instead, the Cowboys had their 15-game non-conference home win streak snapped.

“I’m proud of the effort,” Boynton said. “For us to go toe to toe with them is something to build upon.”

Oklahoma State led for most of the first half, but Wichita State closed with an 8-0 run. Shamet made a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to give the Shockers a 26-23 lead. Oklahoma State did not score for the final 3:04 of the half and didn’t make a field goal for the final 6:09, when Oklahoma State led by eight for its largest advantage before the break.

Shaquille Morris’ only points came on a 3-pointer with about 8 minutes remaining, but the shot gave the Shockers a five-point lead. Wichita State remained in control the rest of the way.

The performance left Boynton feeling good about his program.

“If they’re the number six team in the country, which I think they might be better, we’re really close to being damn good,” Boynton said. “I believe that.”

BIG PICTURE

Wichita State: The Shockers, one of the best shooting teams in the nation, struggled early before getting it together in the second half. Wichita State shot 52.2 percent after the break and made 8 of 14 3-pointers.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys appear close to being pretty good. They played hard defense for Boynton, but their offense was inconsistent. Oklahoma State missed an opportunity to take control of the game in the first half and never really regained it.

QUOTABLE

Marshall on series with Oklahoma State: “I would prefer to play them every year. Hats off to the coaches for being willing to play us, and it was all their idea.”

FOUL DISPARITY

While Shamet made 14 of 16 free throws, Oklahoma State’s entire team went 18 for 21. The Cowboys committed 28 fouls, and Solomon and Kendall Smith both fouled out.

STRUGGLING STARS

Morris entered the game tied for the team lead with 14.6 points per game. He shot 1 for 5 and had just one rebound in 24 minutes before fouling out.

“He obviously didn’t play great offensively, but he was good at the other end,” Marshall said. “They’re a great defensive team, and they did a good job limiting his touches.”

Jeffrey Carroll, Oklahoma State’s leading scorer for the season, went 1 for 9 from the field and finished with three points.
