Duggan leads TCU to easy win over Kansas

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Freshman Max Duggan led touchdown drives on all three of his first-half possessions as TCU scored on every possession before halftime Saturday and was never threatened in a 51-14 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play.

TCU (3-1, 1-0) dominated in every area of the first half against Kansas (2-3, 0-2), which ended a 48-game road losing streak to Power 5 opponents earlier this season at Boston College.

TCU was locked in from the opening kickoff, coming off a home loss to rival SMU a week ago that knocked the Horned Frogs out of the Top 25. The Horned Frogs had some extra motivation as well after losing last year at Kansas.

“Everybody was practicing hard this week,” TCU cornerback Jeff Gladney said, “and you could tell.”

Duggan started for a second straight game but was replaced midway through the second quarter by graduate transfer Alex Delton with the Horned Frogs in full control at 28-0. Delton, who played last year at Kansas State, led TCU on two scoring drives to end the first half for a 38-0 lead.

Duggan, who played all but one snap a week ago against SMU after sharing time the first two weeks, was in for the first two second-half drives before giving way to Delton.

Delton led his first touchdown drive of the season in the second quarter and finished 10-for-15 passing for 186 yards.

TCU coach Gary Patterson said he thought Delton looked more comfortable than Duggan. Patterson said he was pleased that his young team played well before halftime considering the morning kickoff.

“Good first half; I wasn’t particularly very happy with the second one,” Patterson said. “You want to be a great football team you have to finish.”

The Horned Frogs’ defense never gave Kansas a chance to get going. Kansas finished with only 159 yards on 47 plays and was 1 for 11 on third-down attempts. The Jayhawks had only 55 yards on 34 plays heading into the fourth quarter.

Kansas lost its 46th consecutive Big 12 road game. The Jayhawks’ last Big 12 road win came Oct. 4, 2008 at Iowa State.

TCU leading receiver Jalen Reagor ended the first quarter with a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown after he initially muffed the football, giving the Horned Frogs’ a 21-0 lead.

Darius Anderson had a third consecutive 100-yard rushing game for the Frogs, finishing with 115 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

TCU third-string quarterback Mike Collins played the last possession and scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with no time left after hurrying to get the snap off before the clock hit zero.

A few plays before the Collins’ score, Kansas coach Les Miles called his last timeout on third down with the game out of reach.

“It was still a run play,” Patterson said of the meaningless touchdown. “You guys know how I am, I took knees the last time I played here. I’m not one of those guys who runs it up.”

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas: The Jayhawks were overmatched in every phase and didn’t show much fight after a dismal first quarter. Quarterback Carter Stanley struggled with his accuracy, finishing 12-for-29 passing for only 84 yards.

TCU: Patterson must have gotten the Horned Frogs’ attention in practice this week. TCU converted all 10 of its third-down attempts in the first half. TCU made it look easy all day despite missing four receivers with injuries and starting third-string cornerback Keenan Reed.

No. 22 FHSU men’s soccer scores eight in rout of Harding

SEARCY, Ark. – Following an offensively dominant performance against Ouachita Baptist on Thursday that resulted in a draw, No. 22 Fort Hays State men’s soccer was back in the scoresheet early on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers defeated Harding 8-1 to snatch their fourth win of the season.

With the victory, FHSU remains undefeated all-time against Harding, moving the record to 7-0.

The 2018 National Semifinalists struck early against the Bisons. In the fourth minute, midfielder Moritz Walther began the scoring on an assist from Agustin Meza – creating the first goal of the season for Walther.

Just seven minutes later, Moises Peralta followed up Walther, with an assist from Alec Bevis.

Nearly midway through the first half, Tigers leading goal scorer Santiago Agudelo added another to the scoreboard, notching his fifth of the season. Sophomore midfielder,Rogelio Lopez was awarded his third assist on the season during the play.

Four minutes later, Fort Hays added another score only this time, it was Lopez finishing a pass from Agudelo. On an ensuing FHSU possession, the black and gold once again found the back of the net for their fourth goal of the game. Lopez, once again a facilitator on the play, found Sergio Villalba, who finished his chance past goalkeeper Carlos Calderon.

Heading into the halftime break, the Tigers commanded a 5-0 lead over the Bisons and would continue to pour in the goals as the second period kicked off.

Villalba, scoring in the 31st minute, notched another goal in the 56th minute for his second goal of the game, the Tigers sixth.

Just a minute later, Harding. Was able to add a tally to their own side of the scoresheet. Fort Hays State defender Miguel Baca committed a foul within the confines of the 18-yard box and was handed a yellow card. The Bison’s Christian Ramos stepped up to take the penalty kick and successfully found the back of the net.

Before long, FHSU piled on their seventh goal of the game when Alonso Rodriguez played a ball through the middle of the field to Agudelo, cutting to the left corner of the 18-yard box. The senior striker cut in on his right foot and displayed a curving finish between two Bison defenders.

The next Tiger point occurred under five minutes later. In the 80th minute, junior Mauricio Etcheverry was substituted into the match for Santiago Agudelo. In just three minutes, Etcheverry made his presence widely known with a cross from near the sideline. Flying through the air, senior Caden Frank eyed the ball and with his outstretched leg, was able to ricochet the ball past the Harding goalkeeper.

The 8-1 victory is the second largest margin in Fort Hays State men’s soccer history – the team missing the all-time record by only one goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Kieran Brown made three saves in his first collegiate start. Bevis added two assists to his stat line.

After an offensively dominant week, Fort Hays State is now above the .500 mark (4-3-1 overall) and remain undefeated in Great American Conference play.

The Tigers will be playing back in the FHSU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 5 against Newman University.

The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 41-38 overtime win at Washburn last week. The Tigers snapped a nine-game losing skid to the Ichabods inside Yager Stadium in Topeka, a place where they were winless since 1987. FHSU kicker Dante Brown kicked a 24-yard field goal to tie the game at the end of regulation and then hit a game-winning 30-yard attempt in overtime to lift the Tigers to victory. Brown earned MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week for his efforts.

Fort Hays State continues to thrive with its passing attack, averaging 333 yards per game. In fact, FHSU has thrown for exactly 333 yards in each of the first three games this season. In the win at Washburn, Chance Fuller threw for 271 and Voshon Waiters threw for 62. In the two previous games, Fuller threw for all 333 yards. The Tigers own the sixth-best passing offense in NCAA Division II. This week, they face the team right behind them in that category as Missouri Southern averages 331 yards through the air per game.

The Tigers established their running game against Washburn last week, producing 161 yards on the ground. Charles Tigner led the way with 125 yards, the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career.

Missouri Southern has improved immensely on offense under first year head coach Jeff Sims. The Lions have already scored more points than they did all of last season in just three games. The Lions have put 99 points on the board so far this season, averaging 33.3 per game. Last year, they scored just 81 points for the entire season, averaging just 7.3 per game and getting shutout five times. MSSU scored at least 27 points in each game this season. Iowa State transfer quarterback Jacob Park ranks sixth in NCAA Division II for passing yards per game (331.0). Though the offense has seen a drastic turnaround, the Lion defense is allowing 39.7 points per game so far this year, including a 52.5 average in their two losses.

Fort Hays State currently owns a six-game win streak in the series with Missouri Southern, winning all games played since 2011. Missouri Southern’s last win over FHSU occurred in 2010 in Hays by a score of 41-31. FHSU has won three meetings in both Joplin and Hays since 2011. The Tigers took last year’s meeting in Joplin by a score of 55-20.

After allowing 516 yards to Central Missouri in the season opener, the FHSU defense has tightened up the last two games allowing less than 400 yards (369 to Missouri Western, 377 to Washburn). The 516 yards allowed to Central Missouri is best so far by an opponent as the nationally ranked Mules lead NCAA Division II in total offense, averaging 603.3 total yards per game. Missouri Southern enters this contest averaging 463.3 yards per game. Senior defensive back Tanner Hoekman leads the FHSU tackling effort so far this year with 25, followed by Drew Harvey with 21 and Jordan Starks with 20. Hoekman, Starks, and Isaiah Creal-Musgray all recorded interceptions last week. Creal-Musgray’s pick was the biggest, keeping Washburn from scoring in overtime to set up the game-winning field goal by Brown.

Fort Hays State head coach Chris Brown is looking for his 60th win leading the Tigers. He is already the all-time wins leader among coaches in FHSU history.

TMP drops district opener to Hoisington

HOISINGTON – The Hoisington Cardinals offense earned more than 450 yards and running back Wyatt Pedigo accounted for five touchdowns as the Cardinals beat the TMP-Marian Monarchs 42-12 Friday in each teams district opener.

Coach Jay Harris interview

The Monarchs got on the board first with a 15-play 70-yard drive that rook nearly six and a half minutes off the first-quarter clock. On the driver quarterback Kade Harris hit Lance Lang for a 32-yard pass that set up a one-yard Harris touchdown run three plays later giving TMP the 6-0 lead.

After giving up a first-quarter touchdown for the first time all season the Cardinals wasted no time, they put together a seven-play 80-yard drive that was capped off by a 38-yard Mason Haxton touchdown pass to Wyatt Pedigo.

Hoisington converted on the extra point, while the Monarchs didn’t, to take a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter.

After that successful opening drive the Monarchs offense really struggled the rest of the way. In their next 10 possessions of the game they fumbled twice, threw and interception and had to punt four times.

Meanwhile Hoisington got a pair of second quarter touchdowns from Wyatt Pedigo and lead 21-6 at the break.

After a 26-minute delay at halftime for an issue with one of the field lights the Cardinals scored three more third quarter touchdowns and built a 42-6 lead with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.

TMP was able to get on the board toward the end of the third quarter when Harris found Jace Lang for a 15-yard touchdown pass, the first of both players career to make it 42-12.

Hoisington outgained TMP 453 to 176 total yards.

Pedigo finished with 192 yards on the ground and four touchdowns. Hunter Morris also passed the century mark with 121 yards on three carriers.

Game highlights

The Monarchs drop to 1-3 on the season and will host Phillipsburg Friday at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays.

Area Game of the Week: Plainville @ Smith Center

It was a battle of unbeatens as the Plainville Cardinals, 3-0 and ranked 2 in 1A, visited the Smith Center Redmen, also 3-0 and ranked 1 in 1A. Both schools have posted many fine teams through the years and the winner of this game has advanced to the state championship game the last 3 years. Plainville was the state runner-up in 2016 and Smith Center took home state championships in 2017 and 2018.

Fans expected a defensive battle coming in as the Cardinals were yielding right around 12 points a game and the Redmen had given up just over 8 points per game. The start of the contest followed this trend as both squads exchanged punts to start things off. Plainville was then able to drive to the Smith Center 6, but the Redmen defense recovered a fumble, ending the drive. The quarter ended with both squads sporting goose eggs on the scoreboard.

Smith Center jumped out early in the 2nd quarter on a 75 yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Trenton Colby. Senior Sergio Lambert kicked the extra point to give Smith Center a 7-0 lead. Plainville was able to put together a drive of their own that included several long passes by senior quarterback Jordan Finnesy. The drive ended when freshman running back Kyle Werner scampered in for a 20 yard touchdown. Werner was starting in place of the injured Jared Casey. The extra point made it 7-7 midway through the second.

Smith Center had another quick scoring play when senior running back Cole Shoemaker cashed in on a 62 yard touchdown run. That made it 14-7 in favor of the Redmen. The teams would exchange turnovers before the end of the quarter. Smith Center lead 14-7 at the half.

Plainville got the ball first in the 3rd quarter, but went 3-and-out. Smith Center went on a long, methodical drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Senior Jaden Atwood. Lambert’s extra point made it 21-7.

Plainville drove into Smith Center territory, but fell victim to another fumble. This time, Trenton Colby picked up the fumble and took it all the way back for a touchdown. That made it 28-7 in favor of the home team. Smith Center would add two more touchdowns to go on a 26-0 second half run that put them up 40-7.

Finnesy was able to add one more score on the ground, but it was to little to late as the final score showed  Smith Center as a 40-14 winner. Jaden Atwood had 12 carries for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trenton Colby finished with a very efficient 100 yards on 5 carries, including a touchdown. As a team, Smith Center rushed for an astounding 407 yards and 5 touchdowns. On the Plainville side Jordan Finnesy had 160 yards and touchdown on the ground, while also completing 14 of 23 passes for 206 yards. Werner finished with 73 yards on 11 carries, one being for a score.

Smith Center moves to 4-0 and plays the first of 3 straight road games when they head to Oakley next week.

Plainville’s record stands at 3-1. The Cardinals are home for a pair, starting with Republic County.

Twins beat Royals, make history as 4th 100-win team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins became the record fourth team in the major leagues to win 100 games this season, beating the Kansas City Royals 6-2 Friday night behind two-run homers from Miguel Sanó and Ryan LaMarre in a game shortened to 6½ innings because of rain.

Minnesota reached the century mark in wins for just the second time in franchise history. The 1965 Twins went 102-60, then lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games.

“It’s a really nice, kind of cool round number to look at and talk about after the fact,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said before the game.

Houston, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees also have 100 wins. Before this year, the only seasons with as many as three 100-game winners were 1942, 1977, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2016 and 2017.

At 58-102, the Royals are among a record-tying four teams with 100 losses, joining Detroit, Baltimore and Miami. Kansas City has reached triple figures in losses for the third time. The only previous season with four 100-loss clubs was 2002.

Nelson Cruz and Eddie Rosario hit RBI singles in the first off Eric Skoglund (0-3), and Sanó booted the lead to 4-0 in the second with his 34th homer. LaMarre’s second home run of the season made it 6-1 in the third.

Minnesota’s 303 home runs are second in the major leagues behind the New York Yankees’ 305.

José Berríos (14-8) struck out nine, allowing two runs and six hits in his first complete game this season, the third of his big league career.

Whit Merrifield singled in the first for his 202nd hit, advanced to third on Hunter Dozier’s double and scored on Alex Gordon’s groundout. Merrifield tripled in the fifth and scored on Jorge Soler’s sacrifice fly, his 113th RBI.

TOAST TO YOST

Ned Yost’s No. 3 was chalked behind home plate. The retiring manager was honored before the game, leading wife Deborah and family members through two lines of Royals players and staff. He received framed mementoes, a 4-wheeler to ride on his Georgia farm and a standing ovation from the fans.

“It’s emotional a little bit,” Yost said before the ceremony “I’ve spent 10 great years here, but I’m anxious to get, on too. So there’s a lot of good and a little bit of sad. But more good than sad.”

Yost plans to spend more time with his family and he was asked if he planned to take his grandchildren to a theme park.

“I went to Disney World with my grandkids last year,” he said, “and my feet haven’t been the same since.”

UP NEXT

Saturday’s game was moved up five hours to 1:15 p.m. CDT because heavy rains are forecast. The Twins have not announced a starter; the Royals will use RHP Glenn Sparkman (4-11, 6.11 ERA).

Hays falls in homecoming game versus Garden City

Hays High hosted Garden City for their homecoming game Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium.  The Hays High defense started out with a stop and the offense made the most of it.  The second play of the game for the Indians resulted in a 73 yard touchdown run by Roy Maroni.  Soccer player, and new football kicker, Matt Goodale nailed the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Garden City got on the scoreboard for the first time thanks to a snap that went 16 yards backwards for Hays and into the end zone and was recovered by the Buffaloes.  Hays responded immediately with a 65 yard Dylan Dreiling touchdown run to start the second quarter.  The extra point from Hays missed but Garden City had missed theirs leaving Hays with a 13-6 lead.  Garden City scored to close the gap down to one but again missed the extra point.

Roy Maroni struck again in the first half with a 33 yard score to put Hays up 20-12 following an successful extra point.  Garden City fumbled the ensuing kickoff but retained the ball at the 14.  Their drive then went 11 plays 86 yards and took over four minutes.  Following a Carlos Acosta four yard touchdown run and a two point conversion pass tied the game up at 20 for halftime.

Highlights

Garden City struck first in the second half on a 51 yard pass from Carlos Acosta to Lane Durst.  Trailing 27-26 Hays answered right back on a Hayden Brown six yard touchdown rush.  The drive was set up by a long kickoff return by Brown into Garden City territory.  Garden City drove into the Hays redzone but was turned away on a Tucker Veach interception that was returned to the Garden City 25.

Hays did not score on the following drive.  The defense forced the Buffaloes back to their own nine yard line.  A six yard punt put Hays starting at the Buffaloe 15 yard line.  It took until fourth down but running back Hayden Brown threw a touchdown to Dylan Ruder in the back of the endzone for seven yard score.  The two point conversion failed keeping the score at 32-27.

Garden City drove seventy yards on their next drive to take a 35-32 lead.  During the drive Garden City senior quarterback left the game with an apparent knee injury.  Running back Josh Janas finished off the drive on his 34 carry and his second touchdown rush then the two point conversion.

Coach Tony Crough

Hays had four minutes and two timeouts left to navigate 56 yards to win the game.  The Indians received 15 yards on a Garden City penalty and used the momentum to take the ball down to the ten.  On the following play Hays was called for a 15 yard penalty themselves.  On 3rd and 22 and 4th and 22 the Indians heaved two passes for the end zone.  The first was ruled incomplete at the one. The second pass fell incomplete following contact in the end zone on Hays receiver.

Dylan Dreiling ran for 125 yards and a touchdown.  Roy Maroni ran for 164 yards and two scores on seven carries.  Hays falls to 1-3 and 1-2 in the WAC.  Garden City is now and 1-0 in conference play.

Hays travels to Wichita to take on the South Titans next Friday.

FHSU women’s soccer outlasts Washburn

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 1-0 victory over Washburn. It is the Tigers’ fourth win of the season and they head into MIAA play at 4-2. All four of their wins have been shutout victories. Washburn is also 4-2 on the year.

Neither team could find the back of the net for the first 45 minutes. The Tigers had a couple of solid chances to break the scoring open, including a header from Maja Persa off a corner that fell right into the lap of Washburn’s goalie Raegan Wells (4-2). FHSU tallied two more shots before the first 45 minutes ended.

It did not take long for the Tigers to break the scoreless tie. Just 1:30 into the second half, Cailey Perkins stole a pass and found the left corner of the net to put the Tigers up 1-0. The defense and Megan Kneefel stalled the Ichabod effort and gave the Tigers their fourth win of the season. Seniors Paige Utterback and Shayla Podlena earned the hardhats defensively as they played the full 90 minutes. Midfielder Tessa Irvine also played the entirety of the match.

With tonight’s victory, senior goalkeeper Megan Kneefel (3-1) picked up her 18th career win, moving her into a tie for second place with Abbie Flax (2014-2016) in career victories. Kneefel also picked up her 12th career shutout.

Each team had nine shots throughout the match. FHSU tallied five shots on goal taken by Cailey Perkins, Darby Hirsch, Tessa Irvine, and Maja Persa (2). Washburn mustered up four shots on goal with two each from Mackenzie Menke and Olivia Grasso.

The Tigers look to continue their seven-game home win streak on Sunday as they open up MIAA play against Emporia State at FHSU Soccer Stadium. Last week, the Hornets defeated the Tigers 4-2 in Emporia in non-conference play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Tiger volleyball falls at home to Central Oklahoma

HAYS, Kan. – A late push from the Central Oklahoma Bronchos was enough to overpower the Fort Hays State volleyball team 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 11-25) Friday evening at Gross Coliseum. Fort Hays State tied things up at 1-1 with a win in the second set, but the Broncho offense took over after the intermission.

The Tigers move to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in MIAA play, while UCO is now 10-3 on the year and 2-1 in league action.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the opening set before an 11-4 blitz pushed the Tigers in front, 17-14. The Bronchos responded by scoring the next nine points and ultimately took the frame 25-20.

The Tigers battled back to level the match thanks to a big second set from Isabelle Reynolds. After subbing in with the Tigers trailing 6-5, the sophomore tallied three quick kills to help the FHSU jump in front 13-8. Two more kills from Reynolds, a pair of service aces and a solo block from Tatum Bartels helped the Tigers maintain their lead late in the set before Abbie Hayes clinched the win with a service ace.
