The event was hosted at Shangri-La Country Club in Monkey Island, Okla.

Skyler Tebo led the Tigers with a top-15 finish for the first time this season as he finished tied for 12th after shooting rounds of 77, 73 and 76 to complete the week 10-over par (226). Tebo finished fifth among MIAA competitors for the tournament.

Mac McNish finished in a tie for 29th after firing rounds of 78, 73 and 78 for a total of 229. Moustakas named American League Comeback Player of the Year by the Sporting News

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was selected as the American League Comeback Player of the Year by The Sporting News today. The publication’s awards are voted on by a panel of players in each league. Moustakas is the second Royal to garner the award, joining Bret Saberhagen, who was named AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1987.

Moustakas, 29, enjoyed a career year after being limited to just 27 games in 2016 due to a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). In 2017, he slugged a career-best 38 home runs to set the franchise’s single-season record, passing Steve Balboni’s 36 homers in 1985. Moustakas’ home run total also tied for fifth in the American League and eighth in the Majors. He also set career-bests in runs scored (75), RBI (85), slugging percentage (.521) and total bases (289). He was named an All-Star for the second time in his career, winning the MLB Esurance Final Vote, while he also became the third Royal to participate in the Home Run Derby, joining Bo Jackson (1989) and Danny Tartabull (1991).

Moose hit 25 of his 38 home runs before the All-Star break, which also set a club record, passing Jermaine Dye’s 22 roundtrippers in the first half in 2000. Of his 38 home runs, 17 of them either tied the score or gave the Royals the lead, including his second career walk-off homer on June 6 off Houston’s Ken Giles in a 9-7 come-from-behind win. He led the team with 13 game-winning RBI and was second with 19 go-ahead RBI this season.

FHSU football up to No. 8 in D2Football.com poll

LIBERTY, Mo. – After moving up one spot in the AFCA Division II Poll on Monday, the Tigers moved up the same amount in the D2Football.com Poll, released on Tuesday (Oct. 24). The Tigers are No. 8 this week, while they are No. 7 in the AFCA Poll.

Unlike the AFCA Poll, where FHSU is among eight undefeated teams at the top of the list, the D2Football.com Poll has a pair of one-loss teams in front of FHSU. Those two teams, Ashland (No. 4) and Ferris State (No. 7) are in Super Region 3 along with FHSU. Indianapolis, which is No. 6 in the AFCA Poll, is No. 10 in the D2Football.com Poll. The D2Football.com Poll has five teams from Super Region 3 in the Top 10.

Northwest Missouri State remains No. 1 in both national polls. Central Missouri (No. 17) joins FHSU and NWMSU as MIAA schools in the Top 25 of the D2Football.com Poll.

Tigers tabbed No. 3 in first NCAA Super Region rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA released its first set of Super Region Rankings for football on Monday (Oct. 23). Fort Hays State is ranked third in Super Region 3 in the initial release. The Super Region consists of four conferences, the MIAA, GLIAC, GLVC, and GAC.

The top seven teams in the Super Region at the end of the regular season will be selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Fort Hays State is seeking its first appearance in the playoffs since 1995.

The nation’s top ranked team and winner of two consecutive national championships, Northwest Missouri State, is the top ranked team in Super Region 3. The Bearcats have won 38 consecutive games dating back to the start of the 2015 season. Ranked second is University of Indianapolis from the GLVC, the nation’s No. 6 ranked team, while Fort Hays State, ranked No. 7 nationally, is third. All three teams are undefeated at 8-0.

Ashland and Ferris State of the GLIAC are the only remaining one-loss teams in the region. Ashland holds the upper hand between the teams by winning the head-to-head match up. Central Missouri is ranked No. 6 in the region at 6-2, while Grand Valley State is No. 7, also at 6-2. All seven teams in the Super Region rankings are in the Top 25 of the AFCA Division II National Poll.

Arkansas Tech and Ouachita Baptist are currently in a four-way tie for first place among teams from the GAC and hold the No. 8 and No. 9 spots respectively. But in football, automatic bids are not given to conference champions, so any team among the four-way tie for first in the GAC will have to play well down the stretch for playoff consideration. Rounding out the rankings is Tiffin at No. 10, a member of the GLIAC with a record of 5-3.

The playoff format gives a bye to the Super Region’s #1 seed, while #2 plays #7, #3 plays #6, and #4 plays #5 in the opening round. If the playoffs started today, the current rankings would produce match-ups that have already occurred this year in all three first round match-ups. But, there are three weeks remaining in the regular season and rankings are likely to shift with several key meetings among teams inside the rankings.

Hays blasts Circle in Regional opener

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Hays High 8, Circle 0

HAYS, Kan.-Hays High opened up 4-1A South Central Regional #3 play on Monday afternoon at the HHS Soccer Field against Towanda-Circle. The two teams battled powerful winds throughout the 80 minute match. It did not take the Indians long to notch their first tally. Trey McCrae found the back of the net in the fourth minute to give the Indians a 1-0 lead, one that they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Hays would score their second goal of the night in the 30th minute on an Ethan Nunnery shot and that’s when the floodgates opened up. Two minutes later Brian Cisneros, assist from Jacob Maska, chipped one over the Circle goalie. In the 36th minute Maska would get one of his own on an assist from Zach Wagner to give the Indians a 4-0 lead at halftime.

23 seconds in to the second half McCrae opened up the scoring with his second goal of the match. Wagner would add his only goal of the match to give his team a comfortable 6-0 lead. Hays wasn’t done as Maska would score his second goal and McCrae would finish things up with a hat trick goal in the 73rd minute that gave his squad the 8-0 victory.

With the win the Indians improve to 11-6 on the season and will play the winner of Wichita-Trinity Academy and TMP in the Regional Championship game on Friday at 7pm.

Tigers move up to No. 7 in AFCA Division II poll

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State moved up one spot in the latest edition of the AFCA Division II Poll, released on Monday (Oct. 23). The Tigers are now No. 7, benefitting from a loss by previously No. 7 ranked Grand Valley State this past Saturday. The top seven teams in the nation all remain undefeated.

The No. 7 ranking is just one step shy of the highest ranking the program has ever held in an official Division II football poll. FHSU was No. 6 in the poll produced by the NCAA Rankings Committee on September 16, 1996. The AFCA took over producing the official poll in 2000. The current ranking is the highest for the program since September 9, 1996, when the Tigers were also No. 7.

Fort Hays State defeated Missouri Western 38-10 this past Saturday to move to 8-0 for the first time in school history. In the MIAA standings, the Tigers kept pace with No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State, which ran its win streak to 38 games dating back to the start of 2015 with a 19-0 shutout of Lindenwood. Central Missouri (6-2) joins FHSU and Northwest Missouri in the top 25 this week after a win over Washburn. The Mules are No. 23 in the poll this week.

The first set of NCAA Regional Rankings are due to release Monday (Oct. 23). The top seven teams in Super Region 3 are selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. There will be three releases of the regional rankings before the selections are made following the end of the regular season.

FHSU men’s soccer shuts out Marauders in final regular season road match

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team defeated the University of Mary 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 22). The victory moves the Tigers to 8-5-2 on the season, while Mary falls to 6-6-1 on the year. The loss ended Mary’s three-match win streak.

The Tigers came out aggressive in the first half as they outshot the Marauders eight to two, but neither team could find the back of the net as they went into halftime scoreless.

Abdoulaye Cisse got the ball rolling in the second half as he scored his seventh goal of the season from 10 yards out in the 56th minute on a loose ball following a corner kick. The Tigers kept the 1-0 advantage until the 67th minute as Caesar Jones connected on a rebound that ricocheted between players in front of the net.

The score held up as the Tigers rebounded from a seven-match win streak snapped last Sunday. Alex Rodela earned the victory in goal for the Tigers as he improved his record to 2-1 on year.

Fort Hays State outshot Mary 18-5 on the afternoon. The Tigers were able to produce offensive opportunities with 11 corner kicks in the match.

The Tigers will play their final three regular season matches at home. The run begins with Upper Iowa on Thursday (Oct. 26), starting at 5 pm.

Chargers send Broncos to 1st shutout loss in 25 years

CARSON, Calif. (AP) – Travis Benjamin returned a first-quarter punt 65 yards for a touchdown and caught a 42-yard TD pass in the fourth, and the Los Angeles Chargers played a dominant defensive game in the first home victory of their relocation season, 21-0 over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Joey Bosa had two of the Chargers’ five sacks while they sent the Broncos (3-3) to the franchise’s first shutout defeat since a 24-0 loss to the Los Angeles Raiders on Nov. 22, 1992.

Philip Rivers passed for 183 yards in his 100th victory, hitting Austin Ekeler for an early TD and Benjamin for the late clincher.

The Chargers (3-4) have won three straight under new coach Anthony Lynn following a winless opening month in their first season back in Los Angeles after 56 years in San Diego.

Trevor Siemian passed for 207 yards, but Denver lost to the Chargers for just the third time in the AFC West rivals’ past 14 meetings – and did so in historic fashion.

The Broncos, who have never been shut out at home, might have been able to preserve their non-shutout streak with long field goals in the fourth quarter. But coach Vance Joseph went for it twice on fourth down and ended up with an interception and a turnover on downs.

The Chargers had lost seven consecutive home games since last November, and they hadn’t won a home game as the LA Chargers since Dec. 18, 1960.

But the Bolts largely dominated the Broncos, who have lost three of four with a flagging offense that has managed three touchdowns in four games. Los Angeles also avenged its season-opening loss in Denver on a blocked field goal at the end.

The Chargers forced a turnover on Denver’s opening drive and advanced to the Broncos 1, but failed to punch it in on four straight running plays. Undeterred, the Los Angeles defense got a stop – and Benjamin allowed one big bounce before scampering down the middle for the Chargers’ first punt return for a TD since 2012.

That was only the Chargers’ second touchdown of the season in a first quarter, where they had been outscored 50-7.

Neither offense accomplished much in the first half, but Ekeler caught a 1-yard swing pass from Rivers for a TD in the second quarter, capping a 65-yard drive and staking Los Angeles to 14-0 halftime lead.

That was the Chargers’ biggest lead in their past 14 games, but they missed plenty of opportunities to make it bigger. Along with that game-opening failure at the 1, Jahleel Addae and Jatavis Brown both dropped easily catchable interceptions on passes from Siemian, who was under constant pressure from the Chargers’ pass-rushing duo, Melvin Ingram and Bosa.

Benjamin got open across the middle late in the fourth quarter and took off for his second touchdown catch with the Chargers.

BRONCOS HISTORY

Von Miller finished with two sacks, moving past Karl Mecklenburg for second place in franchise history behind Simon Fletcher. Miller has sacked Rivers 16 times.

INJURIES

Denver’s offensive struggles were likely related to the injury absences of right tackle Menelik Watson (calf) and receivers Emmanuel Sanders (ankle), Isaiah McKenzie (ankle) and Cody Latimer (knee).

The Chargers played without starting right tackle Joe Barksdale (turf toe) and key defensive lineman Corey Liuget (back). They lost LG Matt Slauson to a biceps injury in the second half.

UP NEXT

Broncos: At Chiefs on Monday night in a prime-time chance to answer back in the AFC West race.

Chargers: At Patriots on Sunday for the first of two straight transcontinental road trips, with their bye week sandwiched in between.
