TMP’s Chin wins 3-2-1A State Golf title

HAYS – TMP-Marian’s Shannen Chin fired a four-over 76 to win the 3-2-1A Girls’ State Golf Tournament Monday at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays.

Chin out-dueled Rylie Cook of Johnson-Stanton County who was 2nd with 81. Kerrigan Rudolph of Goodland finished 3rd with an 88.

Down by 1 stroke after 10 holes, Chin passed Cook with pars at #11 and #12 to take a one shot lead heading to the signature 13th hole. Chin made a routine par while Cook found the water leading to a double bogey. Chin increased her lead to 4 strokes with a par at #14.

The tourney was decided on #15. Cook played an excellent 2nd shot to the par 4 15th leading to what would be a tap-in birdie. Chin then rolled in a birdie of her own from 70 feet behind the cup to maintain her 4 stroke advantage.

Chin, a junior, won her 8th tourney title of the season and set a new school record for lowest score at a state tourney for TMP. The previous record was set by Karee Dinkel with 85 at Cheney in 2015.

Syracuse won the team title with a combined score of 393 followed by Stanton County 405, while Goodland won a 6th man tiebreaker with Hoisington to finish 3rd at 406. TMP finished 6th with a score of 421.

FHSU’s Brown tabbed MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the third time this year, senior kicker Brandon Brown was named the MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week on Monday (Oct. 16). Brown had three field goals and made all four of his extra-point attempts, generating 13 points against Washburn in a 37-20 win.

Brown converted 3-of-4 field goal attempts in the game, with makes from 29, 30, and 47 yards. His only miss was from 53 yards. He converted all four of his extra-point attempts to remain a perfect 31-of-31 on the season in that category. Brown’s 30-yard field goal was the most crucial, converting through the teeth of a strong north wind to tie the game 20-20 at the 3:59 mark of the third quarter, part of Fort Hays State’s 27 unanswered second half points against Washburn.

Joining Brown for weekly honors are Braxton Marstall of Emporia State (Offensive Athlete of the Week) and Stephan Robinson of Central Oklahoma (Defensive Athlete of the Week).

The Tigers have had a player earn a weekly MIAA honor each week this season. That list includes Jacob Mezera (Week 1 Offensive Athlete of the Week), Brandon Brown (Weeks 1, 4, and 7 Special Teams Athlete of the Week), Nathan Shepherd (Week 2 Defensive Athlete of the Week), Monterio Burchfield (Week 3 Offensive Athlete of the Week), Jose Delgado (Week 5 Defensive Athlete of the Week), and Kenneth Iheme (Week 6 Offensive Athlete of the Week).

Manning, Pierre-Paul and rest of Giants stun Broncos

DENVER (AP) – Eli Manning ignored the loss of four wide receivers, and the reeling New York Giants capped a stormy week of injuries and infighting by stunning the Denver Broncos 23-10 on Sunday night.

The Giants (1-5) pulled off one of the season’s biggest upsets by dominating Denver in every phase from start to finish. The Broncos (3-2) blew a golden opportunity to close in on Kansas City in the AFC West after the Steelers knocked off the last unbeaten team in the league earlier Sunday.

Visiting teams went 8-5 in Week 6 and are 46-44 overall this upside-down NFL season.

Jason Pierre-Paul had a trio of sacks for the Giants, who came into Denver tottering from a tumultuous week in which three wide receivers landed on injured reserve, five other starters were sidelined with injuries and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was suspended for insubordination.

It was a wipe-out, all right, just not the one everyone was expecting.

“Nobody is giving us a chance in hell to win this ballgame,” coach Ben McAdoo said as he prepared to bring his team to Denver, where the Broncos were healthy, coming off a bye and leading the league in defense.

Yet the Giants had a goal-line stand to go with four sacks and two interceptions, double their season total. And it was the Broncos who bumbled their way through a nightmarish night filled with muffs and mistakes, flags and frustration.

Quarterback Trevor Siemian was knocked out of the game briefly, and he lost his right tackle Menelik Watson (calf) along with receivers Emmanuel Sanders and rookie Isaiah McKenzie to ankle injuries.

Before being soundly booed as they retreated to the locker room trailing 17-3 at the half, the Broncos kept hollering at each other in the huddle, couldn’t convert third downs and gave up more big plays than they had all season.

The biggest came when Siemian, who earlier threw into triple and even quadruple coverage while overlooking open targets, threw a pick-six to cornerback Janoris Jenkins . His 43-yard interception return for a touchdown with 48 seconds left before halftime gave New York a two-touchdown cushion and left Siemian writhing in pain.

Siemian dived at Jenkins as he scooted past him near the goal line, and Siemian jammed his left shoulder into the ground. It’s the same shoulder that bothered him almost all of last year and required surgery in January. He was replaced by Brock Osweiler but returned to start the second half.

On this night, it was the Broncos who were the team in turmoil, falling behind 20-3 before Siemian hit Jeff Heuerman from 13 yards out with four minutes remaining.

Aldrick Rosas hit a 40-yard field goal in the final minute, and then made the tackle of Brendan Langley after a 47-yard kickoff return.

FIRST QUARTER FOLLIES: Denver hadn’t allowed any points and just two first downs in the first quarter before yielding a 13-play, 69-yard drive that ate up seven minutes and ended with a 25-yard field goal that gave the Giants a 3-0 lead.

The Broncos surrendered four first downs on the drive that set the tone for the game.

KICKING WOES: Brandon McManus’ miss from 35 yards out, his fourth missed chip shot of the season, was an ominous sign for Denver. He also had a 53-yard attempt that was blocked.

McManus has been anything but money since signing an $11.25 million extension last month. His 53-yarder blocked by Kerry Wynn was his fifth miss in 13 tries. Last year, he missed five times in 34 tries.

Adam Gotsis returned the favor by blocking Rosas’ 49-yard field goal try.

BIG GAIN: The Broncos were allowing just 50.8 yards rushing per game. Orleans Darkwa gained almost that many on one run in the second quarter when he knifed right up the middle and wasn’t pulled down until safety Justin Simmons caught up with him 47 yards later.

That set up Manning’s 5-yard TD toss to tight end Evan Engram that gave New York a 10-0 lead.

Darkwa finished with 117 yards, the most this season against Denver, which had shut down Melvin Gordon, Ezekiel Elliott, LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch before their bye.

M*A*S*H UNIT : In addition to being without star Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants didn’t have five other starters. Defensive end Olivier Vernon (ankle) and linebacker Jonathan Casillas (neck) were missing from a defense that was already without Rodgers-Cromartie, who was suspended indefinitely.

Center Weston Richburg (concussion), running back Paul Perkins (ribs) and receiver Sterling Shepard (ankle) were also missing on offense.

Not that the Giants missed any of them on this night.

Steelers outlast Chiefs to defeat NFL’s last unbeaten

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Le’Veon Bell ran for 179 yards and a touchdown, Antonio Brown made an acrobatic touchdown catch in the fourth quarter and the Pittsburgh Steelers held on to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 19-13 on Sunday.

The Chiefs (5-1) still had a chance after Brown’s 51-yard reception made it 19-10, moving quickly downfield and getting a 33-yard field goal from Harrison Butker.

And when their defense forced a quick three-and-out, Tyreek Hill’s 32-yard punt return gave them the ball with 1:48 to go.

But after the Steelers (4-2) gave up a first down, James Harrison sacked Alex Smith on third-and-10, and the quarterback’s incomplete pass on fourth down left the NFL with no unbeaten teams.

Ben Roethlisberger was 17 of 25 for 252 yards for Pittsburgh, bouncing back from his abysmal five-interception performance against Jacksonville last week.

His favorite target was Brown, who a few weeks ago was flipping over water coolers on the sideline but spent Sunday slinging high-fives.

He finished with eight catches for 155 yards, often beating All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters.

The game in many ways resembled January’s divisional playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium, when Bell churned for 170 yards rushing and the Steelers’ defense shut down the Chiefs in an 18-16 victory.

Their defensive dominance was even more impressive considering the circumstances: The Steelers had allowed more than 200 yards rushing twice in the past three weeks, while Kareem Hunt ran for 107 yards and the Chiefs piled up 450 yards in a shootout victory last Sunday in Houston.

Kansas City rolled into the game averaging 414.2 yards and 32.8 points, but the Steelers shut down NFL rushing leader Hunt, who gained just 21 yards on nine carries. They also spent the afternoon with their paws on Smith’s jersey, holding the league’s top-rated passer to 246 yards and a touchdown.

Still, Smith nearly rallied the Chiefs in the second half, hitting De’Anthony Thomas down the sideline for a 57-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that got Kansas City within 12-10.

But the Steelers answered with Bell, whose hard running got them near midfield. And when they faced third-and-2, former Chiefs coach and Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley dialed up a pass down the sideline to Brown, who caught the tipped ball and ran it 51 yards for the score.

It was Brown’s 52nd touchdown reception, passing Lynn Swann for third-most in franchise history.

OOPS MOMENTS

The Chiefs’ first turnover since their first offensive play of the season came in the first half, when backup center Zach Fulton snapped the ball over Smith’s head for a safety. But the Steelers gave the ball right back when they inexplicably decided not to field the ensuing free kick.

INJURIES

Steelers RT Marcus Gilbert, who had missed three weeks with a hamstring injury, left in the first half after aggravating it. LB Vince Williams left in the second half with a hip injury after picking up a pair of sacks. … Chiefs RB Charcandrick West was evaluated for a concussion.

The Tiger defense held the Ichabods to eight yards in the third quarter and 89 yards in the second
half while keeping them off the scoreboard.

After the Tiger defense got a fourth down stop at their 19 yard line, the offense drove down the field. Jacob Mezera hit Tyler Bacon on a 30-yard strike down the Washburn sideline for the seniors first career touchdown, pushing the lead to 34-20.
