Butker’s field goals send Chiefs to win over Redskins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker drilled a 43-yard field goal with 8 seconds left in his first career game, atoning for an earlier miss and helping Kansas City to a 29-20 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night.

Signed off the Carolina practice squad earlier in the week, Butker missed a 46-yarder in the first half before hitting three attempts in the second. The first tied the score 17-all, the next gave the Chiefs the lead and the last made Kansas City (4-0) the league’s only undefeated team.

The Chiefs put an exclamation point on the win when linebacker Justin Houston picked up a fumble as the Redskins (3-2) were trying to keep the game alive and returned it for a game-ending touchdown.

The last time there was only one unbeaten team through the first four weeks of the season was 2010, when the Chiefs were the final team standing. They went on to win the AFC West.

Alex Smith threw for 293 yards with touchdowns on the ground and through the air, and it was his 37-yard strike to Albert Wilson on a broken play that set up Butker’s go-ahead kick.

Travis Kelce hauled in seven catches for 111 yards and a touchdown, while Chiefs rookie Kareem Hunt pounded away 21 times for 101 yards against the Redskins’ stout defensive front.

Kirk Cousins had 220 yards passing and two touchdowns for Washington, but his throw to the end zone with 50 seconds left was dropped by Josh Doctson and forced the Redskins to kick a field goal.

That missed opportunity came back to haunt them less than a minute later.

The Redskins stunned the Chiefs early when Cousins found Terrelle Pryor over star cornerback Marcus Peters for a 44-yard touchdown pass, then drove to the goal line before settling for a field goal.

But the plucky Chiefs slowly fought their way back into the game.

Smith started to find his athletic tight end down the seam, then hit Kelce with a 17-yard TD strike late in the first half. The two connected again on third down shortly after the break, and Smith scored a few plays later when he fooled the defense with a quarterback-keeper.

The Redskins needed fewer than 2 minutes to answer: Cousins’ 69-yard pass to Vernon Davis set up a short throw to Ryan Grant, who also beat Peters, for a touchdown and a 17-14 lead.

It was 17-all after Butker, signed to replace the injured Cairo Santos off Carolina’s practice squad, made his first career field goal. Then, the Chiefs picked apart a Redskins defense down to four healthy defensive backs to set up his 32-yard kick.

After the Redskins tied the game once more, Butker delivered the biggest kick of his life.

PREGAME TRIBUTE

Flags flew at half-staff and there was a moment of silence before the game for victims of the Las Vegas shooting. The Redskins then locked arms for the national anthem, while everyone on the Chiefs side stood with the exception of cornerback Peters and linebacker Ukeme Eligwe.

INJURY WATCH

Redskins cornerback Josh Norman departed in the second quarter with a rib injury , and his backup Quinton Dunbar left early in the fourth. Running back Rob Kelley and safety Deshazor Everett also left with injuries for Washington, while Chiefs right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was sidelined by a left knee injury on their second offensive play.

LETTER: Former Tiger coach praises Fort Hays State program

Overmiller

This past Saturday, our beloved Tigers played ugly and not as sharp as our new expectations, our “new normal,” so to speak. But in saying that, do I dare say this now, “This is what GREAT teams do. They adapt, overcome and find ways to win.”

I believe it’s time to start using the word “great” when referring to the Fort Hays State University Tiger football program and Coach Chris Brown. Just look at their incredible journey and turnaround since Coach Brown took over the reins. Their record and/or performance has improved each year, culminating in a bowl victory last year. He has an incredible support system – from the phenomenal staff, to his loyal players, to the administration, to the school, and just as importantly, the amazing Tiger fan base.

Yes, the Tigers are physically stronger than ever before (thanks to the best strength and conditioning coach in the nation) but they are mentally stronger and smarter as well! Brown has assembled a great staff, that through his leadership, has this team prepared and ready to battle each and every week. He has taught these fine young man about life, how to become a great man and a great leader. These student-athletes are doing the right thing because they are not only amazing young men, they are following in their coaches’ great examples.

I am proud to have been a part of this legacy. These Tigers, under Brown‘s tenure, have gone on to become great leaders in their communities, their homes and their careers. They have become better fathers, husbands and friends. To top it all off, Fort Hays State University is giving these young men a top quality education.

Forever a Tiger,
Eric “Coach Kick” Overmiller

K-State’s McCrane tabbed Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With a career-high tying four field goals to help Kansas State earn a 33-20 win over Baylor on Saturday, Wildcat senior place kicker Matthew McCrane has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

It is the second weekly conference accolade for McCrane, who also received the honor following the Kansas game in his freshman season of 2014. The Wildcats now have 46 player of the week honors since 2011, the second most in the Big 12, while 25 of those have been of the special teams variety, the most in the Big 12.

A product of Brownwood, Texas, McCrane connected on field goals of 37, 21, 49 and 23 yards on the afternoon, including two in the fourth quarter that secured the win. His 4-for-4 mark was the best perfect game of his career, tied for the second best in school history and tied for the third best in the nation this season. Additionally, his 15 points scored in the game was one shy of setting the single-game school record among kickers.

McCrane improved his career mark to 44-of-50 as his 88.0-percent success rate ranks first in school history and third in the nation. He also ranks first in school history in career extra-point percentage (99.1), second in career field goals made, fourth in career scoring among kickers (234) and eighth overall in scoring.

K-State travels to take on Texas this Saturday at 6 p.m., inside Texas Memorial Stadium. The contest will be shown nationally on FS1.

Royals announce Eiland and Wakamatsu not retained

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced today that pitching coach Dave Eiland and bench coach Don Wakamatsu will not have their contracts renewed for the 2018 season.
“I want to personally thank both Don and Dave for the contributions they made to our success here, culminating with the World Series title in 2015,” said Dayton Moore, Royals’ Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. “We are currently in the process of restructuring our Major League coaching staff and there will be nothing more to discuss at this time as we evaluate these important decisions.”

Denver Broncos hold on for a win over Oakland Raiders

DENVER (AP) – The Denver Broncos throttled running back Marshawn Lynch and sent quarterback Derek Carr to the sideline with a back injury, then sealed their 16-10 win over Oakland on Sunday on safety Justin Simmons’ interception of EJ Manuel at the Denver 8 in the closing minutes.

Despite holding Lynch to 12 yards on nine carries, the Broncos found themselves in danger of frittering away an AFC West showdown they had dominated when Riley Dixon’s punt traveled just 37 yards to the Oakland 42 with 4:16 remaining.

Trailing by six, Manuel heaved a high toss to Amari Cooper just after the 2-minute warning but Simmons, who won the job from three-time Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward this summer, came down with the ball just shy of the goal line and took it out to 8. The Broncos ran out the clock to hit their bye week at 3-1.

Oakland (2-2) had cut its deficit to six on Giorgio Tavecchio’s 38-yard field goal with 5:23 remaining.

That came after Brandon McManus hit the left upright from 29 yards out early in the fourth quarter after nailing kicks from 28, 36 and 46 yards.

Denver’s only touchdown was a doozy, a one-handed grab of Trevor Siemian’s 22-yard pass by tight end A.J. Derby.

The Raiders couldn’t do much against Denver’s fortified front seven that also stuffed Melvin Gordon, Ezekiel Eliott and LeSean McCoy. They managed just 24 yards on 15 carries for a 1.6-yard rushing average.

Carr left the game in the third quarter with a back injury after he was sacked by Shelby Harris and was hit by Adam Gotsis as he twisted awkwardly. Coach Jack Del Rio said Carr suffered from back spasms.

Four plays later, the Broncos sniffed out a fake punt on fourth-and-11 from the Raiders 33 and wide receiver Jordan Taylor stuffed punter Marquette King, who was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct for throwing the football at fullback Andy Janovich as he got up.

The Broncos took over at the Oakland 15 but McManus missed from 29 yards out.

Carr (10 of 18 for 143 yards) was replaced by Manuel, who drove the Raiders 73 yards for Tavecchio’s 38-yard field goal. Manuel finished 11 of 17 for 106 yards.

The Broncos jumped out to a 10-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by McManus and the one-handed touchdown grab by Derby, who led the Broncos with 75 yards on four catches.

Derby lined up from the fullback position and raced past rookie middle linebacker Marquel Lee, then reached with his right arm to snare the slightly overthrown pass from Siemian. He never broke stride – nor did he gather the ball with his other hand – on his last couple of steps into the end zone.

LONG TIME COMING: The Broncos looked like they were in prime shape late in the first half when Bennie Fowler downed a punt at the Oakland 1, but Carr instead produced Oakland’s first 99-yard touchdown drive since Oct. 2, 2011, against New England. He found Johnny Holton racing past safety Darian Stewart and hit him in stride for a 64-yard scoring strike .

GOOSE EGGS: The Broncos haven’t allowed a first-quarter score all season. They led 10-0 before the Raiders had managed their initial first down, which wouldn’t come until the 11-minute mark of the second quarter.

UP NEXT:

Raiders: Return home to host the Baltimore Ravens.

Broncos: After a bye week, host the New York Giants for fourth home game, a stretch that will be followed by three consecutive road games.

Royals say farewell to free agents in loss to Arizona

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar tipped their caps and likely said goodbye to Kansas City’s fans, and then the playoff-bound Arizona Diamondbacks ended the regular season with a 14-2 win over the Royals on Sunday.

The foursome joined the Royals in 2011 and keyed the team’s run into consecutive World Series, including a championship in 2015. They are all eligible for free agency after the season.

Manager Ned Yost pulled the group together with one out in the fifth inning. The players hugged behind the pitchers’ mound, then waved their caps to the cheering crowd as they walked off the field. Salvador Perez, who also debuted with Kansas City in 2011, embraced the group on the top step of the dugout.

The Royals played a video honoring the players after the game, and fans stayed and applauded.

FHSU women’s soccer suffers first MIAA loss to No. 3 Jennies

HAYS, Kan. – The hopes of breaking the undefeated Central Missouri’s record on Sunday fell short for the Tigers as they suffered their first MIAA loss of the season to the No. 3 Jennies 2-0. With the loss, Fort Hays State falls to 2-1 in the conference and 5-3-2 overall. The Jennies added another win to their record as they now sit at 10-0 overall with a 3-0 MIAA mark.

With the Jennies going into the strong Hays wind in the first half, they were unable to net a goal over the Tigers. However, at the 23 minute mark in the opening half, the Tigers let up on an own goal to give the 1-0 advantage to the No. 3 Jennies. This would be the only mark for either team in the first half as Central Missouri held the lead heading into the half. The Jennies outshot the Tigers 5-2 in the first 45 minutes.

With the second half kicking off, Fort Hays State was now a victim of the wind. Just 13 minutes into the last 45 minutes, the Jennies netted a goal to take the 2-0 lead off a header from Jada Scott from an assist on the left side from Abby Rhodes. This would be Scott’s fifth goal of the season. The Tigers attempted to get on the board with their own points, but failed to gain momentum as they were outshot again in the second 10-3 to the Jennies. The Scott goal would end up being the decisive point as the Jennies captured the 2-0 win over Fort Hays State.

Ana Dilkes for Central Missouri earned her 10th win of the season in goal with two saves. For the Tigers, Megan Kneefel captured three saves in 90 minutes played, but dropped her goalkeeping record this season to 1-2-1.

Next for the Tigers is a pair of MIAA road matches as they first meet up with 4-5, 1-2 MIAA Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo., on Friday (Oct. 6). Sunday promotes another tough challenge for Fort Hays State as they take on No. 24 Missouri Western who is undefeated in conference play at 3-0. That match is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday (Oct. 8).

Bonifacio’s HR helps Royals rally to beat Diamondbacks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Jorge Bonifacio and Jake Junis are auditioning for 2018 jobs.

Bonifacio hit a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning to help the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

Bonifacio’s homer, his 17th, came off Archie Bradley (3-3) with Paulo Orlando and Ramon Torres aboard.

”I was looking for a fastball,” Bonifacio said. ”He throws 97. I was just trying to put the ball in play.”

He said he is unsure if he has established himself to be a starting outfielder for next year.

”I don’t know,” Bonifacio said. ”I’ll just come ready for spring training and try to make the team.”

Bradley lost for the first time since July 14, allowing a season-high three runs.

”The greatest part about this is, this isn’t the end of the season for us,” Bradley said. ”As much as we want to win and finish strong and finish the season on a high note, this is baseball. You’re going to make bad pitches and guys are going to hit them. For me, it’s just a reminder that I’m not invincible. Guys can hit pitches. Guys are going to hit pitches out of the park.”

Junis (9-3) allowed two runs on five hits, including A.J. Pollock’s home run in the sixth, to pick up the win. The right-hander’s nine victories are tied for the American League lead for rookies.

”I didn’t know that,” Junis said. ”That’s pretty special. That’s more than I could ever ask for in my rookie season.”

David Peralta’s fifth-inning double scored Rey Fuentes, who walked and stole second, with the first Diamondbacks’ run.

Arizona right-hander Taijuan Walker was pulled after five innings in his final start before the postseason. He allowed three hits and one run, while striking out six and walking one.

”Felt good, felt strong,” Walker said. ”I felt all my pitches were pretty solid today and it’s a good sign moving into the playoffs.”

Mike Moustakas grounded into a double play in the fourth, scoring Lorenzo Cain, for the only run Walker would allow.

Daniel Descalso’s run-producing triple in the eighth off Joakim Soria cut the Royals’ advantage to one run.

Mike Minor worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to collect his sixth save in eight chances. Minor has saves in his past six appearances.

”Mike’s filled that role really nice, really adjusted to it,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. ”He’s got great stuff. We know that, but you can have great stuff and not be a successful closer. You’ve got to have that special composure and competitiveness that he has.”

Zack Godley, who had a 3.40 ERA in 25 starts, made his first relief appearance of the year, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 0 for 3 and finished September with a .175 batting average (14 for 80) to drop his average to .299.

ZACK ON WEDNESDAY

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo made it official, announcing RHP Zack Greinke would start the Wednesday wild-card game against the Rockies. He said Greinke ”felt great” after throwing 75 pitches in four-plus innings Friday. ”There’s no mystery to it,” Lovullo said. ”He’s been our horse all year long. I know he surpassed 200 innings. He’s won 17 games. He’s paced us on days where we needed somebody to pitch a big game. He’s been everything that we’ve needed all year long.”

GREINKE LACKED ROYALS’ VISION

Greinke told the Royals he wanted to be traded after the 2010 season and the club accommodated him by sending him to Milwaukee. Among the players the Royals received in return were SS Alcides Escobar and CF Lorenzo Cain, two integral parts of the Royals’ 2015 World Series championship club. ”Zack was a phenomenal player, but Zack didn’t believe we were going to win,” Royals manager Ned Yost said Saturday. ”Zack wanted to go somewhere he could win. I kept trying to tell him, `Zack, we’re going to win here. These kids are going to be good.’ But (he said), `I don’t believe it.’ After we won the World Series, I saw him at the Gold Glove banquet and made him tell me he was wrong. He just smiled said, `I was wrong.’ I had a good relationship with Zack. He really wanted to win. He just didn’t have the vision I had.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Diamondbacks: C Jeff Mathis (fractured right hand) was activated and started, singling in his first at-bat. He was removed after five innings. . RHP Jimmie Sherfy has not pitched since Sept. 24 because of triceps tightness.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy will have minor surgery Tuesday to remove ”loose bodies” in the back of his elbow that caused inflammation and landed him on the disabled list in late August.

UP NEXT

Diamondbacks: LHP Robbie Ray, who is tied for first in the NL with a 1.79 road ERA, will start the finale.

Royals: LHP Jason Vargas will be going for his 19th win, which would lead the AL.
