Giolito, Garcia lead White Sox past fading Royals

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie right-hander Lucas Giolito pitched seven strong innings and Avisail Garcia drove in three runs with his 18th homer and a double to lead the Chicago White Sox past the fading Kansas City Royals 8-1 on Sunday.

Kevan Smith had a solo homer and a single for two RBIs as Chicago took two of three from the Royals and dropped them 5½ games behind Minnesota for the second AL wild card. Kansas City has seven games left.

Lorenzo Cain’s solo homer in the fourth was the only run off Giolito (3-3).

One of the top prospects for the rebuilding White Sox, the 23-year-old Giolito allowed five hits while striking out five and walking none in his 11th career start. He has given up just four runs over 20 innings in his last three outings.

Buffalo Bills stymie the Broncos

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Tyrod Taylor threw two touchdowns and the Bills intercepted Trevor Siemian twice in the final 19 minutes of Buffalo’s 26-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Taylor went 20 of 26 for 213 yards with a 2-yard touchdown to Andre Holmes and a 6-yarder to Charles Clay. Taylor got lucky on the touchdown pass to Holmes , as his pass deflected off the hands of Zay Jones just inside the goal line and bounced directly to Holmes in the back of the end zone.

The Bills (2-1) overcame their struggling running attack courtesy of Taylor’s arm and a stout defense in a game LeSean McCoy was limited to 21 yards on 14 carries. Though he had seven catches for 48 yards, McCoy’s latest poor outing came after he was limited to 9 yards rushing in a 9-3 loss at Carolina.

The Bills allowed just one touchdown, while Brandon McManus rounded out Denver’s scoring with three field goals.

Rather than point fingers at the Taylor-led offense following the loss to Carolina, Bills defenders blamed themselves for failing to generate any turnovers. They made up for that against the Broncos on an unseasonably hot afternoon, with temperatures projected to reach the upper 80s, making the on-field conditions even warmer.

In falling to 2-1, the Broncos turned the ball over on each of their final four possessions, with Siemian being intercepted by E.J. Gaines and Tre’Davious White.

The Broncos also turned the ball over twice on downs.

Deon Lacey tackled De’Angelo Henderson for a 1-yard gain when Denver attempted a fake punt on fourth-and-2 at its own 31 early in the fourth quarter. And the Broncos’ final drive ended when Siemian underthrew a pass to Emmanuel Sanders with under 2 minutes left.

Buffalo went ahead 20-16 on Taylor’s 6-yard pass to Clay with 6:20 left in the third quarter, and then put the game out of reach on a pair of field goals by Stephen Hauschka.

Hauschka hit a 53-yarder after the Broncos were foiled on their fake punt. Hauschka also hit a 55-yarder in becoming Buffalo’s first player to make two field goals 53 yards or longer in the same game.

Hauschka then sealed the win with a 37-yard field goal with 3:14 left on a drive following White’s interception .

Von Miller didn’t help the Broncos’ cause on that drive. Though he had a sack and was in on six tackles, the star linebacker took a foolish penalty with 6 minutes left.

Offering his hand as if to help up Taylor, Miller then pulled it away at the last second right in front of an official, who flagged Miller 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

It was a disappointing performance for Siemian, who entered the game tied for the league lead with six touchdowns passing. Instead, he finished hitting 24 of 40 for 259 and two interceptions. Jamaal Charles scored Denver’s lone touchdown on a 12-yard run five minutes into the second quarter.

PENALTIES

Two undisciplined penalties against the Bills led to the Broncos’ first touchdown. First, safety Micah Hyde was flagged for a late hit on C.J. Anderson, who was well out of bounds following a 32-yard run. On the next play, defensive end Jerry Hughes drew a roughing-the-passer penalty for bowling over Siemian after he threw an incompletion.

ANTHEM PROTEST

Bills RB LeSean McCoy knelt, then sat and stretched during the anthem a day after he caused a stir by tweeting, “It’s really sad man” and then used an obscenity to describe Trump. Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly joined the team on the field during the anthem and held up his left hand while holding a Bills cap.

More than half of the Broncos players — including linebacker Von Miller, safety Aqib Talib and receiver Demaryius Thomas — knelt on their side of the field.

Fans began to boo as the Bills players walked in unison onto the field. They stopped booing once the anthem began.

INACTIVES

Broncos: Rookie starting left tackle Garett Bolles started a week after fearing he tore his left Achilles tendon. Tests, however, revealed he sustained a bruised bone and returned to practice on Thursday.

Bills: Starting left tackle Cordy Glenn (right ankle) and Dareus (right ankle) were ruled out after being hurt in a 9-3 loss at Carolina last week. Rookie third-round draft pick Dion Dawkins started in place of Glenn, while Cedric Thornton started for Dareus.

FHSU volleyball falls to Washburn

HAYS, Kan. – Despite putting up a strong fight in the opening set, the Fort Hays State volleyball team fell in straight sets against No. 25 Washburn Saturday evening (Sept. 23). The Tigers are now 8-8 overall and 0-2 in MIAA play, while the Ichabods jump to 10-4 this season and 1-1 in league play.

The Tigers hit .208 in the opening set, but struggled in the next two frames to finish the match with a .113 attack percentage. The Ichabods countered with a .310 swing rate, their best match of the season to date. Errors were the difference in the match, with FHSU making 23 miscues to Washburn’s 13.

No Tiger reached double figures in kills, with Sydney Dixon and Callie Christensen leading the way with eight kills each. Tatum Bartels had a strong day in the middle, totaling seven kills and a team-best .333 swing percentage to go along with two blocks (one solo). Christensen led the match with four blocks, including a career-best three solo blocks for the second night in a row. Amirah Bentley tossed up 31 assists while adding three kills, three digs and one block. Abbie Hayes recorded a team-high 11 digs.

Fort Hays State had three chances to secure the opening frame, but the Ichabod defense repeatedly prevented the Tigers from capturing that final point. Washburn led by as many as three early in the set, but a 6-2 run from the Tigers put them in front 13-12. The teams traded points for the remainder of the frame, with neither side leading by more than two. A kill from Magan Alexander brought the Tigers to set point, 24-23, but the Ichabods tied things up after a blocking error. Azlyn Cassaday then gave FHSU another chance to take the set with a kill, but WU once again bounced back. Christensen threw down a big kill to make the score 26-25, but the Ichabods responded by scoring three-straight points to steal the set and the momentum, 28-26.

The Tigers kept things close to open the second set, but a 9-1 run in the heart of the frame put the Ichabods in prime position, 20-14. Fort Hays State did not have an answer this time around, dropping the second set 25-17. The Ichabods kept their foot on the gas in the third set, leading wire-to-wire to complete the sweep, 25-16. WU scored the first five points in the final frame, leading to a quick 9-2 lead. The Tigers closed within three, 10-7, thanks to four-consecutive points, but another long run from the visitors put FHSU behind by double digits, 19-9.

Fort Hays State wraps up a three-game homestand Tuesday (Sept. 26) when fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney makes the trip to Hays for a 6 p.m. match inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Royals keep wild card hopes alive with win over Chisox

CHICAGO (AP) — Alex Gordon homered, Whit Merrifield drove in three runs and Danny Duffy pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Royals to an 8-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night, keeping Kansas City’s slim playoff hopes alive.

Salvador Perez went 2 for 4 with a pair of run-scoring doubles.

With eight games remaining, the Royals trail Minnesota by 4 ½ games for the second AL wild card.

Duffy (9-9) allowed two runs on eight hits in six-plus innings for his first win since Aug. 22.

Jose Abreu went 1 for 4 and drove in two runs to reach the 100-RBI mark for the fourth straight season. The Chicago slugger is just the third major leaguer to begin his career with four straight seasons of at least 25 homers and 100 RBIs. Joe DiMaggio and Albert Pujols are the others.

Tim Anderson went 1 for 4 to extend his career-best hitting streak to 14 games.

Dylan Covey (0-7) allowed three runs on five hits in six innings. The right-hander still is looking for his first major-league win after 17 appearances (11 starts).

Mezera connected with tight end Drew Kite on a pair of second quarter touchdown passes to give the Tigers a 24-0 halftime lead.

NSU’s lone touchdown came after a Mezera interception on the Tigers first possession of the third quarter.

Doyin Jibowu picked of the first pass of the season for the Tiger defense late in the second quarter to hold the RiverHawks out of the endzone.

TMP-Marian volleyball wins Holcomb Invite; HHS goes 3-2

HOLCOMB, Kan. – The TMP-Marian volleyball team won all five of their matches to win the championship of the Holcomb Invitational Saturday. The Monarchs beat Hays High 2-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-23) in their first pool play match then swept Lakin and Holcomb.

The Monarchs geat Hugoton 2-0 in the semifinals then knocked off Ulysses to win the title.

Hays High finished 3-2, losing to Holcomb in three sets (25-21, 15-25, 19-250 then sweeping Lakin (25-23, 25-10). They beat Dodge City (25-17, 25-20) and Lakin (25-7, 25-20).

Grier, Crawford help West Virginia put away Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Will Grier threw for 347 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, Justin Crawford ran for 125 yards and another score and West Virginia pulled away late to beat pesky Kansas 56-34 on Saturday.

David Sills V had 130 yards and two TDs receiving, and Kennedy McKoy also reached the end zone twice, as the Mountaineers (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) beat Kansas (1-3, 0-1) for the sixth time in seven meetings.

They did it by overcoming a career game from sophomore Khalil Herbert, who ran for 291 yards and two TDs. It was the third-most yards by a Kansas player on the ground in school history.

Peyton Bender added 197 yards and a TD through the air, but he also threw a pair of picks, while a porous defense that allowed 40-plus points to Central Michigan and Ohio struggled once more.

The Mountaineers looked as if they’d cruise past the Jayhawks again when they put together four straight touchdown drives in the first half. Each covered at least 80 yards, none took more than 3:22 off the clock, and the result was a 28-3 lead midway through the second quarter.

Herbert finally stopped the onslaught with a 67-yard touchdown run, but the Mountaineers’ Mike Daniels picked off a tipped pass a couple minutes later and returned it for another score.

But the Mountaineers’ seemingly comfortable 35-13 halftime advantage didn’t last long.

Their offense suddenly hit the skids, punting four times and turning it over once during a five-possession series spanning the break. And a defense that had started to bottle up Herbert again became leaky, allowing short touchdown runs a couple minutes apart to make it 35-27.

Suddenly, the sparse crowd that turned out on a hot, sunny afternoon began to think back to 2013, when the Jayhawks stunned the Mountaineers 31-19 on a cool November day.

The teams swapped TDs in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers getting a second chance at the end zone after an offside penalty on a field goal, and it was still 42-34 with 7:35 left in the game.

Grier answered with a QB keeper then scored again a few minutes later to put it away.

THE TAKEAWAY

West Virginia: Grier had the Mountaineers humming early and late, but the offense sputtered out of rhythm during a long stretch in the middle of the game. Their counterparts on defense didn’t help much, getting pushed around by the Kansas offensive line most of the afternoon.

Kansas: Miscues doomed the Jayhawks, from the pick-six to penalties when they were going for it in fourth-and-short situations. But while coach David Beaty insists there are no moral victories, the way Kansas responded to adversity was something to build upon.

Plainville gets first win over TMP

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Plainville 24, TMP 6

PLAINVILLE, Kan.-Plainville scored 17 first quarter points on Friday night and didn’t look back. The Cardinals opened the scoring with a 25 yard Tanner Copeland field goal to take a 3-0 lead. TMP would get the ball back but a first play fumble set Plainville up on the TMP 34 yard line and it didn’t take the Cardinals long to answer. Jordan Finnesy found Chase Cellmer for another Cardinal score to give them a 10-0. Plainville capped the first quarter scoring on a 1 yard plunge from Hayden Gillum.

The second quarter was more of a defensive effort from both sides as both teams put zeros up on the scoreboard. TMP was only able to muster three first half first downs and only 78 yards of total offense. Plainville racked up 199 yards in the first half.

TMP recovered an onside kick to start the second half and drove into Plainville territory but could not punch the ball into the end zone. Plainville would answer with six play 67 yard drive and a second touchdown from Gillum gave Plainville a 24-0 lead after three quarters. TMP would get on the board midway through the fourth quarter on a 9 yard touchdown pass from David McFarland to Tate Garcia. The Monarchs would not threaten again and they fall to 1-3 on the season and will host Cimarron next week. Plainville improves to 1-3 and will host Republic County next Friday.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Hays falls to Garden City in tight game

The Hays High Indians put their Western Athletic Conference lead on the line Friday night against undefeated Garden City. Hays entered the game at 2-0 on conference play. It was the first league game for Garden City on the season.

The teams played to a stalemate through most of the first half. Garden City had the best chance to score in the first quarter but missed a short field goal off the cross bar when Hays got pressure up the middle of the attempt. Hays had trouble moving the ball and never crossed the midfield stripe. The Indian’s best play of the first quarter on a 27 yard screen was called back on a penalty.

Garden City found pay dirt on the final drive of the first half on 21 yard touchdown pass from Garret Doll to David Arteaga when the Hays defense had a breakdown leaving the receiver open in the end zone. The touchdown with 1:49 left in the half gave Garden City a 7-0 lead at halftime.

Highlights

Hays held Garden City to an 18 yard punt into the wind after three plays to open the second half. Hays moved the ball into field goal range on the ensuing possession and Logan Clark hit a 33 yard field goal making the score 7-3. That would be all the scoring for the night.

Garden City moved to the Hays 38 yard line but missed on a fourth down pass to give Hays the ball back. The Indians were forced into a punting situation on the drive and on fourth down was called for an ineligible man down field on a screen pass out of the punting formation.

The two teams continued to trade punches when Hays finally got the ball back with 52 second left. Hunter Brown converted 4th down on a ten yard pass to Palmer Hutchison and then hit Keaton Markley for 11 yards. Garden City was called for a personal foul on the play giving Hays eight seconds for one play. The game ended with a Garden City in the end zone and freezing the scoreboard at 7-3.

Coach Randall Rath

Hays falls to 2-2 on the season and 2-1 in the WAC. Garden City is now 4-0 and 1-0. Hays travels to 4-0 Valley Center next week.

Fort Hays State gearing up for home game with Northeastern State

Fort Hays State Football, ranked No. 18 in the latest AFCA Division II Poll, hosts Northeastern State on Saturday, September 23, at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. Game time is set for 2 pm. The Tigers enter at 3-0, tied with No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri State for the MIAA lead, while Northeastern State comes in at 0-3.

Listen Live

The Tigers are looking for their first 4-0 start in the program’s NCAA Division II history, something FHSU has not accomplished since 1983. The Tigers will be looking for their fourth consecutive win over Northeastern State. FHSU has won every meeting between the teams since NSU joined the MIAA. The Tigers hold a slight 3-2 edge in the all-time series.

The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 31-24 win at Central Oklahoma last week. Monterio Burchfield’s 64-yard touchdown reception with 42 seconds remaining in the game lifted the Tigers to victory. He earned MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week for his 8-catch, 217-yard receiving performance against the Bronchos. It ranked fourth on the all-time single-game receiving yards performance list at FHSU, just 23 yards shy of the record. Burchfield helped propel Jacob Mezera over the 400-yard passing mark for the game. Mezera finished 27-of-37 for 401 yards. Mezera is completing 68 percent of his passes so far this year, averaging 291 passing yards per game.

The Tigers moved up three spots in the AFCA national rankings for their win at Central Oklahoma. In the supplemental D2Football.com Poll, the Tigers are rated No. 16 in the nation. Fort Hays State’s rank in both polls are new highs for the program.

Kenneth Iheme is leading the Tigers in all-purpose yards, averaging 109.7 per game. He is the leading rusher on the team with 208 yards. Layne Bieberle also averages more than 100 all-purpose yards per game at 101.

On the defensive side of the ball, Connor Shedeed leads the Tigers in tackles with 24, followed by Tanner Hoekman with 20. Wyatt Parker is the team sack leader at 1.5, while in the secondary, Kamon Clayton leads the team in pass break-ups with four.
