Hays High blanks Great Bend

Hays Post

Hays High 2, Great Bend 0

HAYS, Kan.-There is no love loss between Hays High and Great Bend. It was obvious in Tuesday’s Western Athletic Conference match-up on the pitch at Hays High. These two teams met up a little over a week ago in Great Bend with the Panthers coming out on top 5-2.

This week was a different week. No goals were scored by either team in the first half but there was plenty of action and it was physical. Hays High players received three yellow cards in the first half, many of which came as a result of frustration from a lack of foul calls. Despite the physicality the Indians mounted several shots on goal but could not find the back of the net.

In the second half Hays High changed that with an offensive burst that started with a Brian Cisneros goal in the 52nd minute. It all started with an Ethan Nunnery pass to Trae McCrae. McCrae’s shot deflected off the goalie’s hands and Cisneros tapped it in on the back side to give Hays the 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later McCrae was in the right place at the right time as he deflected a Great Bend pass right into the Panther goal. The 2-0 lead was enough for the Indians to pick up their fifth win and snap a two match losing streak. The Indians improve to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the WAC. They will be on the road Thursday to face the Buhler Crusaders.

Stroman ends 5-start winless streak, Jays beat Royals

TORONTO (AP) — Marcus Stroman pitched seven innings to win for the first time in six starts, Darwin Barney hit a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon’s solo home run off Ryan Tepera in the eighth was the 5,694th of this major league season, breaking the record set in 2000 at the height of the Steroids Era. The record was broken with just less than two weeks remaining in the regular season. The blast, which cut the Royals’ deficit to 5-2, was his eighth this season and the 159th of his 11-year big league career.

There were 5,610 homers last year, an average of 2.31 per game, and this year’s average of 2.53 entering Tuesday projects to 6,139. That would be up 47 percent from 4,186 in 2014.

Barney went 2 for 3 with three RBIs as the Blue Jays opened their final homestand on a winning note.

Stroman (12-8) allowed one run and four hits for his first victory since Aug. 16 against Tampa Bay.

Tigers move up to No. 18 in AFCA Division II Poll

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State moved up three spots in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, released on Monday (Sept. 18). The Tigers are now No. 18 in the national rankings, fresh off a 31-24 road win at Central Oklahoma last week. The Tigers are now in the top 20 of the AFCA for the first time in program history.

Fort Hays State moved into the top 25 of the AFCA poll for the first time in program history last week, debuting at No. 21. FHSU needed a late touchdown at Central Oklahoma to keep its top 25 status as MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week Monterio Burchfield delivered a 64-yard touchdown reception with 42 seconds remaining in the game to break a 24-24 tie and push the Tigers to 3-0 on the season.

Fort Hays State joins Northwest Missouri State and Emporia State as the three top 25 ranked teams from the MIAA. The two-time defending national champion Bearcats continue to hold the No. 1 ranking, the only other squad in the conference besides the Tigers to remain undefeated for the season. Emporia State slipped down one spot to No. 15 in the poll after a seven-point win over Missouri Southern.

Fort Hays State is the featured team in the headline of the official AFCA release. SEE HERE.

Fort Hays State hosts Northeastern State (0-3) this Saturday at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays at 2 pm.

FHSU’s Burchfield named MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior receiver Monterio Burchfield earned MIAA Offensive Athlete of the Week honors for his efforts in the 31-24 win at Central Oklahoma this past Saturday. This is the second time in three weeks a player from FHSU earns the Offensive Athlete of the Week honor and is the fourth Athlete of the Week honor for FHSU in football so far this year.

Burchfield had 217 receiving yards on eight catches and the game-winning touchdown with 42 seconds remaining to lift Fort Hays State to a 31-24 win at Central Oklahoma. The game-winner was a 64-yard score as he stiff-armed his defender to the ground, then scampered from midfield to the endzone outrunning the rest of the defense. He also had the key reception on Fort Hays State’s game-tying drive moments earlier, rising over his defender for a 40-yard reception on 3rd-and-12 to put FHSU in field goal range. FHSU converted a 24-yard field goal to tie the game with 3:44 remaining. Burchfield averaged 27.1 yards per catch and helped push quarterback Jacob Mezera past the 400-yard passing mark for the game. Mezera was 27-of-37 for 401 yards.

Burchfield joins Logan Thompson (Defensive Athlete of the Week) from Emporia State and Juante Baldwin of Pittsburg State (Special Teams Athlete of the Week) from Pittsburg State as the weekly conference honorees.

Siemian, Broncos crush Elliott, Cowboys

DENVER (AP) – Trevor Siemian tied a career high with four touchdown passes and the Denver Broncos held Ezekiel Elliott to the worst game of his career – 8 yards on nine carries – in a 42-17 blowout of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a game that included an hour-long lightning delay.

Aqib Talib’s 103-yard interception return for a touchdown with 53 seconds left was the final indignity for the Cowboys (1-1), who watched Von Miller end a career-long five-game sackless streak by dumping Dak Prescott twice.

Elliott, who’s playing while his appeal of a six-game suspension for domestic violence works its way through the courts, came into the game averaging 108 yards rushing per game and more than 5 yards a carry in his career.

The star in the backfield on this day was C.J. Anderson, who rushed for 118 yards and a score and also caught a TD pass for the Broncos, whose only big blemish in their fifth straight 2-0 start was the left leg injury to tackle Garett Bolles, their No. 1 draft pick who got hurt on the opening drive of the second half.

Two plays after Bolles was carted off, Siemian found Virgil Green for a 2-yard TD. Chris Harris Jr.’s interception set up Anderson’s 22-yard touchdown run that made it 35-10.

The Cowboys pulled to 35-17 on Jason Witten’s 28-yard catch that was set up by rookie Jourdan Lewis’ interception when the receiver he was covering slipped.

The Cowboys looked nothing like the team that dominated the Giants in their opener. They were seeking their first win in Denver since 1992 and instead lost to the Broncos for the sixth straight time.

Siemian threw scoring strikes of 10 and 6 yards to Emmanuel Sanders as the Broncos built a 21-10 halftime lead.

The Cowboys were lucky to be that close after a first half in which they managed just five first downs, converted one third down and were outgained 246 yards to 97.

The only touchdown for Dallas came on a 3-yard drive after DeMarcus Lawrence’s strip sack of Siemian after beating right tackle Menelik Watson, who also had a tough night in Denver’s opening win against the Chargers.

Dez Bryant beat Talib for the score two plays after Maliek Collins scooped up the loose ball after Lawrence’s first of two sacks.

Lawrence added a second sack before halftime, but was whistled for illegally leaping on a field goal on the next snap, and Denver capitalized on the 15-yard personal foul as Siemian found Anderson open in the flat for a 16-yard score that made it 14-7.

After Sanders’ second score, the Broncos boldly called a timeout with 1:33 left and Dallas, which had no timeouts remaining, capitalized on it when Dan Bailey tied his career-long field goal with a 56-yarder to pull the Cowboys to 21-10 with 2 seconds left before halftime.

The Cowboys began the day without their top cornerback, Orlando Scandrick, who broke his left hand last week, and they lost rookie Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) and Nolan Carroll (concussion) in the first half.

Denver scored on its first drive when Siemian found Sanders for a 10-yard strike , and the Broncos were driving for another score but McManus pushed a 49-yarder wide right, his second miss in three attempts since signing his contract extension Monday.

LIGHTNING DELAY : The game was delayed by lightning for 62 minutes in the first quarter. The Cowboys were at midfield with 33 seconds left in the first quarter when the teams were told to head to their locker rooms and fans retreated to the concourses.

LEARY PLAYS: Ron Leary, who bolted Dallas for Denver’s four-year, $35 million deal in the offseason, played against his former team after clearing concussion protocol Saturday.

SPLIT ALLEGIANCES : DeMarcus Ware was the honorary alumni captain for the coin toss between the game pitting his former teams. He said he was thrilled to have played for both teams but would always root for Von Miller.

Ware retired in January after nine years in Dallas and three seasons in Denver because of chronic bad problems. He acknowledged he considered coming out of retirement when Broncos linebacker Shane Ray injured a wrist early in training camp but decided to stick with his new gig working for the NFL Network.

“I’ve played enough football,” he said.

FHSU women’s soccer advances past Hornets behind Stoddard’s two goals

EMPORIA, Kan. – In an offensive powered match, the Tigers got back to their winning ways as they slipped past Emporia State 3-2 in a non-conference match. Fort Hays State improves to 3-1-2 on the season after capturing their first victory in three matches.

Eden Stoddard got back to leading the Tigers on the pitch as she netted two goals to improve her season stat line in that category to five on the season. The first goal for Stoddard came after a rebound from Kylie Thomas at the 11 minute mark. Her second was a header off a cross from Jasmine Beaulieu 23 minutes into the match. Beaulieu would also put her name in the game as she earned her first goal of the season late in the second half off the cross bar to go-ahead and eventually seal the win.

With the Tigers leading the contest heading into halftime 2-0, the Hornets hoped to come out of the locker room with scoring on their mind. That scoring developed with 15 minutes left in the contest as back-to-back goals from Tanna Benfiel and Erica Self tied up the contest at 2-2. The offense could not hold up after that as Beaulieu netted her goal to help the Tigers to their third win of the season.

Kristen Thompson was back in goal for the Tigers as she captured two saves on the night. Thompson improves her saves this season to 15 on the year. With the win, Thompson is now 3-0 behind the net this season.

Next up for the Tigers is their first home game of the season as they take on Washburn in a non-conference match Friday (Sept. 22) at 8 p.m. at the Fort Hays State Soccer Stadium following the men’s match.
