Morris throws for 467 as Central Michigan beats Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Shane Morris threw for 467 yards and five touchdowns on an efficient 28 of 37 attempts while leading Central Michigan to a 45-27 victory over Kansas on Saturday.

In their first road game of the season, the Chippewas rolled into Memorial Stadium and took control late in the second quarter after a quiet start to the game for both teams.

A Kansas field goal made the score 10-6 in Central Michigan’s favor with just under five minutes left until halftime, as the two teams seemed to be fairly evenly-matched.

Less than two minutes later, however, Chippewa tight end Logan Hessbrook took a Morris pass 40 yards to the end zone. Then, with just six seconds remaining, receiver Corey Willis snagged a six-yard score as well. Suddenly, it was 24-6 and Central Michigan wouldn’t look back.

Offense was the key for Central Michigan, racking up 590 total yards. Most of their work came through the air, but five Chippewas combined for 123 yards on the ground as well.

Mark Chapman led the game with 168 yards on eight receptions, and reeled in three touchdowns as well. He delivered the knockout blow, turning a short Morris pass into a 75-yard dash to the end zone after the Jayhawks had started to trim the deficit in the fourth.

Kansas quarterback Peyton Bender had a poor start to the game, but played decently once he got things together. He finished with 323 yards on 32 of 62 passing, but failed to find the end zone and threw two picks.

Jayhawks true freshman running back Dom Williams accounted for two touchdowns on the ground, and led the game in rushing with 64 yards. Receiver Ryan Schadler also ran it in for a score on a 33-yard reverse.

THE TAKEAWAY

Central Michigan: The Chippewas played an almost spotless game, their lone turnover coming off a punt return slip up. With just one game left before competition begins in what should be a tough Mid-American Conference, Central Michigan has reason to be confident.

Kansas: Not a good look for the Jayhawks in this one. After a strong opener against Southeast Missouri State, things seemed to be trending in the right direction for coach David Beaty’s team. But after this one, it seems Kansas could be heading for the same level of mediocrity they’ve carried in seasons past.

UP NEXT

Central Michigan: The Chippewas will next travel to Syracuse for their final non-conference game of the season against the 1-1 Orange.

Kansas: The Jayhawks will play their first road game of the season next Saturday as they travel to 1-1 Ohio in their non-conference season finale.

Tiger volleyball wraps up weekend with wplit

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Fort Hays State volleyball team picked up a split on the final day of the Cavalier Classic, hosted by Walsh University. The Tigers went down in straight sets Saturday morning (Sept. 9) against Pittsburgh-Johnstown before rallying to defeat West Liberty in the afternoon session, 3-2.

The Tigers are now 4-5 on the year, while PJU finished the weekend 4-0 to improve to 8-1 overall and WLU moved to 5-4 after a Saturday split.

The Tigers will wrap up their early-season non-conference play next weekend when they travel to Oklahoma for five matches. FHSU will open the weekend in Ada, Okla. for a match with East Central on Thursday at 7 p.m. before moving to Bethany, Okla. for four matches in the MIAA-GAC Crossover Tournament, hosted by Southern Nazarene.

Pittsburgh-Johnstown 3, Fort Hays State 0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-22)
The Mountain Cats used 11 service aces to knock off Fort Hays State in straight sets. Pitt-Johnstown eliminated the Tigers defensively at the net, with FHSU totaling just three blocks in the match. The Tigers recorded three more kills than the Mountain Cats (34-31), but tallied 20 attack errors in the loss.

Kylie Rollman led the team with nine kills, while Callie Christensen posted a team-high .286 attack percentage with seven kills and two blocks. Amirah Bentley tossed up a match-high 21 assists and Taylor White picked up 15 digs in the loss.

Fort Hays State 3, West Liberty 2 (25-9, 22-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12)
The Tigers bounced back in their second match of the day, topping West Liberty in five sets. Saturday’s match was FHSU’s fourth contest to go the distance so far this season, just one fewer than the Tigers had all last year.

Sydney Dixon posted career-highs with 17 kills and 15 digs, picking up her second career double-double. The junior led the team in kills with Kylie Rollman close behind with 15 kills and three blocks. Magan Alexander reached double figures in kills for the third time this weekend, posting a personal-best 12 kills. Tatum Bartels paced the Tigers with three service aces and four blocks (one solo). Taylor White was credited with a team-high 18 digs and also added four assists. Amirah Bentley (35 assists) and Becca Page (19 assists) split the setting duties.

Neither team had much of an advantage in any stat category, with the Tigers holding a slight edge in attack percentage (.219 to .192), total blocks (7.0 to 6.5) and service aces (5 to 4).

The Tigers never trailed in the opening set, racing out to a 12-2 lead thanks to a pair of service aces from Bartels. Fort Hays State dominated at the net, holding WLU to a -.200 attack percentage in the first frame.

Neither side could put together much of a run in the second set, with the score differential never reaching five points. The lead changed hands six times in the frame and there were 12 ties. The Tigers fell behind by four late in the set, 18-14, but rallied to take a 22-21 lead thanks to multiple Hilltopper attack errors. WLU rebounded after falling behind, scoring the final four points to win the set and even the match.

Fort Hays State put together another big run to open the third set, quickly leading 9-2. The Hilltoppers slowly but surely crept back in to the set, closing from as many as nine down, 18-9, to within one, 24-23. Dixon secured the victory with a kill, putting the Tigers in front 2-1.

The Tigers fell behind early and were unable to recover in the fourth set, losing 25-21 to force a deciding fifth set. West Liberty used a five-point run to reach set point, 24-15, before the Tigers fought off six set point opportunities to close within 24-21.

West Liberty captured the first three points in the final set, but the Tigers scored four of the next five to tie things up. Fort Hays State took the lead two points later, never trailing for the remainder of the match. The Hilltoppers tied things up three more times, but FHSU secured the match by scoring five of the final seven points. Rollman was essential in the final frame, collecting eight kills on eight swings including the last four kills for FHSU.

Second half offensive outburst too much for FHSU men’s soccer

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team fell to sixth-ranked Midwestern State Saturday afternoon (Sept. 9), 4-1. The Tigers fall to 0-3-1 on the season with the loss, while the Mustangs continue their perfect season at a 4-0 clip.

The Tiger offense was aggressive in the first half as seven different Tigers were able to find an opening in the defense for a scoring opportunity. However, only four of those eight shots were on target, all of which were saved. The defensive unit also had posted a solid first half, holding the potent Mustang offense in check throughout the first 45 minutes.

The tide began to turn out of the break as FHSU surrendered the first goal early in the second half on a header from Mustang Laurence Chamberlain. MSU continued the offensive onslaught, ramping up its offensive output with a pair of goals from Julian Barajes in the 76th minute and Steve Pondeca in the 80th minutes to give the Mustangs a comfortable three-goal lead.

The Tigers continued to fight back aggressively as Derick Gonzalez pushed a free kick from 20 yards out into the back of the net, giving the Tigers life in the 83rd minute and cutting the deficit to 3-1. Midwestern State quickly responded, as Koby Sapon-Amoah clipped the inside of the far post from just outside the box nearly one minute after Gonzalez’ goal to increase the Mustang lead back to three. That score held up until the end of the match, keeping the Mustangs’ undefeated season in check.

Fort Hays State finished the match with the advantage in shots, rifling off 14 on the afternoon. The Tigers also took four more corner kicks than Midwestern State, but could not find the back of the net more than the lone goal. Tobias Patino and Gonzalez each attempted three shots in the contest to lead the Tigers, while senior Michael Yantz collected six saves in goal.

The Tigers will be in action again next week with a pair of matches in Washington state on Thursday and Saturday (Sept. 14, 16). The Black and Gold will continue the search for their first win on the season against Seattle Pacific and Western Washington.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kendall Adams scored two defensive touchdowns in the first half to propel No. 19 Kansas State to a 55-7 victory over Charlotte on Saturday.

The Wildcats (2-0) led 14-0 midway through the first quarter, before Adams took a 30 yard interception up the far sideline and made it 21-0. The pick was Adams first of the season. Hays High beats Great Bend in overtime

Following a week one set back Hays looked to bounce back with a second straight home game as they took on Great Bend Friday night. It was the first game of the Western Athletic Conference season.

Neither team scored in the first half though each team did have an opportunity to do so. Hays took the opening possession 63 yards on 13 plays but lost the ball on downs at the Great Bend 27. The two teams traded punts then the Panthers went on a long drive. Great Bend went 15 plays, converting on two fourth downs, taking the ball down to the Indian ten before losing the ball on downs at the 17. Those two long drives between the Indians and Panthers totaled 17:29 of the 24 first half minutes.

Hightlights

Hays struck first in the third quarter when Hunter Brown hits Keaton Markley on 4th and 13 for a 28 yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. Great Bend answered right back scoring on the first play of the 4th quarter to tie the game 7-7. Hays took the ensuing possession 80 yards over 12 plays to grab a 14-7 lead with 6:31 remaining.

Great Bend turned the ball over for a second time on the next possession setting up Hays on the Panther 34 yard line. Hays thought lost 15 yards on a penalty then threw an interception on second down.

Great Bend drove the field to tie the score at 14 with 1:55 remaining. The Indians could not do anything with their next possession and Great Bend took over at the 33 yard line. The defense held forcing a 43 yard field goal which missed wide left.

Great Bend scored on the opening possession of overtime but missed the extra point when the snap bounced to the holder leaving the score at 20-14. Hunter Brown kept the ball on each of the three runs that led to a three yard touchdown run to tie the game at 20. Following a timeout from the Panthers Trey VanPelt sent back a perfect snap to Hunter Brown and Logan Clark nailed the game winning kick for a 21-20 victory.

Coach Randall Rath

Brown carried the ball 23 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. The Panther’s Gage Fritz ran 24 times for 101 yards.

Hays is 1-1 and 1-0 in the WAC. Great Bend falls to 1-1 and 0-1.

Hays is on the road in Liberal next week.

Chiefs’ Berry out for season with ruptured Achilles’ tendon

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs safety Eric Berry ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s victory in New England and the three-time All-Pro will miss the remainder of the season.

Berry was hurt while covering Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski on a passing route. He hobbled at the end of the play and sat on the turf, and it took a cart to remove him from the field.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid suspected after the game that it was an Achilles injury, and he said Friday that an MRI exam confirmed the diagnosis.

Berry has overcome plenty of hurdles in his career. He missed most of the 2011 season after tearing the ACL in his left knee, then missed much of the 2014 season after he was diagnosed with lymphoma.

He signed a $78 million, six-year contract this past offseason.

Hays High Cross Country at Hesston

The Hays High Indian cross country teams were at Hesston Thursday for one of the most unique races of the year. At the Swather Special runners compete against their class only. Freshman run against freshman and so on through seniors. Classifications were also combined with a small class and large class division. 1-2-3A were all put together and 4-5-6A were grouped together.

Claire Shippy placed 13th in the freshman division. Christina Leos was 17th and Kassie Zimmer 18th in the same division. Dawson VonFeldt was 4th on the Freshman boys side. Yesenia Maldonado was 5th in the sophomore girls division. Justice Dotts led the sophomore boys with a 20th place finish.

Tana Herreman was 18th in the senior girls division. The Hays girls finished in 9th overall…the boys were 14th.

Hays High will host their own invitational on Thursday, September 14th.

Big second half lifts Chiefs over Super Bowl champion Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — There were big plays all over the field. The Chiefs, not the Patriots, were making them.

Alex Smith threw two long touchdown passes and rookie Kareem Hunt, after fumbling on his first NFL carry, scored three times to help Kansas City stun New England 42-27 on Thursday night in the season opener.

Coming off their sensational Super Bowl rally to a fifth Lombardi Trophy, the Patriots faded badly in the second half. A raucous sold-out crowd of 65,878 celebrated the unveiling of yet another championship banner, and there was plenty of talk about Tom Brady leading them to a 19-0 record.

After Week 1, though, they are winless.

It was the first time the Patriots lost at Gillette Stadium when leading at halftime, a span of 82 games. They were no match for the Chiefs in the last two periods.

Tyreek Hill scored on a 75-yarder and Hunt put the Chiefs in front with a 78-yarder to punctuate Kansas City’s charge after trailing 17-14 at halftime. Hunt also had a 58-yard scamper and finished with 141 yards rushing and 98 receiving. Hill had 133 yards through the air, and Smith went 28 for 35 for 368 yards and four touchdowns.

Brady, the 13th quarterback to start an NFL game at age 40, didn’t look too spry. He struggled mightily in the second half and didn’t throw for a touchdown, finishing 16 for 36 for 267 yards.

Patriots newcomer Mike Gillislee scored on three short runs, becoming the first player since Terrell Owens of Philadelphia in 2004 to score three touchdowns in his debut with a new team.

And Kansas City aided the Patriots’ cause with 15 penalties for 139 yards. Yet, in the end, the Chiefs looked like world-beaters.

SHORT YARDAGE

New England failed twice in the first quarter on short-yardage runs, by Gillislee and Super Bowl hero James White, and again in the fourth period, by Gillislee. If anyone proclaimed the Patriots were missing RB LeGarrette Blount, who scored 18 TDs last season and was a beast in such situations, well, Gillislee, who came from Buffalo as a restricted free agent, ran in for a pair of 2-yard touchdowns and a 1-yarder.

ROGER, ROGER

Not only did the crowd revel in the video highlights from the Super Bowl, the fans booed vigorously when Commissioner Roger Goodell was shown talking on the sideline Chiefs owner Clark Hunt during warmups. A website distributed thousands of towels featuring Goodell’s face adorned with a clown nose, and many fans also had T-shirts with the caricature. Goodell watched the game from a suite, but not with Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

INJURIES

Kansas City’s star safety Eric Berry was carted off with 4:56 remaining with an undisclosed injury.

The Patriots lost perhaps their best defensive player, linebacker Dont’a Hightower, in the third quarter with a knee injury. His absence showed on Hunt’s long TD reception. … WR Danny Amendola left in the fourth quarter with a head injury. He’s projected as New England’s slot receiver with Julian Edelman out for the season.

FHSU volleyball sweeps Roberts Wesleyan to open weekend

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Fort Hays State volleyball team made quick work of Roberts Wesleyan College Thursday evening (Sept. 7), knocking off the Redhawks in straight sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-10). The Tigers now sit over .500 for the first time this season, improving to 3-2 overall. RWC dips to 0-5 on the year.

Magan Alexander led the Tigers with a career-best 11 kills, her first career double-digit kill contest. The sophomore did not record an error in the match, swinging at a team-high .647 clip while adding two block assists. Becca Page tossed up 28 assists while playing just two sets, averaging 14 assists per set. Kailey Klibbe paced the Tigers with nine digs while adding two service aces.

The Tigers tallied a .361 swing percentage while holding the Redhawks to a .169 attack rate. FHSU also dominated the stat line defensively, totaling five blocks and 41 digs to RWC’s one block and 26 digs.

Roberts Wesleyan captured the first point of the match, but the Tigers scored the next four points to take the lead for good. Another run of four-straight points wrapped up the frame, putting FHSU in front 1-0.

The Redhawks kept things close in the second set, posting their best single-set hitting percentage of .333. There were nine ties and four lead changes in the set, with neither side leading by more than four points. A kill from Callie Christensen ended the set and gave the Tigers a 2-0 victory.

The Tigers never trailed in the third frame, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead. Later, a 6-2 run put FHSU in front by double figures, 16-5, before running off five-straight points to take a commanding 22-7 lead. Ashley Webb finished off the match with a kill after a pass from Amirah Bentley.

Fort Hays State continues play in the Cavalier Classic Friday (Sept. 8) when it goes up against Seton Hill at 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET) and tournament host Walsh University 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET). Tigers fall at Rogers State

Claremore, Okla. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team dropped its first game of the weekend on Thursday (Sept. 7), dipping to 0-2-1 on the season after a 1-0 loss at Rogers State. The Hillcats improved to 2-1 overall this year.

The lone goal in the match came in the 63rd minute from Roger State’s Jaxon Pitt. Kevin Kwarteng found Pitt with a pass in the box and Pitt sent the shot past Michael Yantz.

Fort Hays State was outshot by Rogers State 16-7 on the night, but the Tigers lacked efficiency as only three of those shots were on frame. Abdoulaye Cisse led the Tigers with three shots, two of which were on goal. Yantz took the loss between the pipes for FHSU despite saving nine shots, matching his career high.

The Tigers will continue the search for their first victory on the season as the road trip continues on Saturday (Sept. 9) when they face off against sixth-ranked Midwestern State in Claremore, Okla. The match is set to kickoff at noon.
