HHS Volleyball rolls in Dodge

DODGE CITY, Kan-The Hays High Lady Indian volleyball team had little trouble as they defeated Sublette, Dodge City and Lakin on Thursday in Dodge City. The Lady Indians opened with a straight set romp of Sublette, winning in impressive fashion by scores of 25-10 and 25-13. Tasiah Nunnery led the team with 10 kills, Brooklyn Schaffer 4 aces, Hannah McGuire 7 assists, Kallie Leiker 11 digs and Macee Altman 8 block assists.

In their second match of the day Hays High took care of Western Athletic Conference foe Dodge City in straight sets. The Lady Indians won 25-20 and 25-16. Nunnery again led the way in kills with 10, McGuire with 13 assists, Leiker 20 digs and Jaycee Dale with 8 block assists.

Hays faced off with Lakin in the final match of the day and it took them three sets to take care of business. The Lady Indians dominated the first set winning 25-16. The Lady Broncs battled back in the second set and picked up the 26-24 victory. In the third set Hays was trailing 15-12 and went on a 13-5 run to win the set 25-20 and win the match two sets to one. Nunnery led the way with 14 kills and 18 digs, McGuire with 18 assists and 3 aces and Dale with 15 block assists.

Hays High improves to 5-1 on the season with the three wins. They will be off until next Thursday when they host a quadrangular featuring Garden City, Ulysses and Pratt.

Twins score 3 off Herrera in ninth to stun Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Twins’ Jorge Polanco drove in the go-ahead runs off ailing Kansas City closer Kelvin Herrera with two outs in the ninth inning, and Minnesota rallied to beat the Royals 4-2 on Thursday night.

Herrera, who has been dealing with a mild forearm strain, inherited a 2-1 lead before giving up a pair of singles and a walk. Brian Dozier hit a tying sacrifice fly, and after Joe Mauer was walked intentionally, Polanco lined a single up the middle for the lead.

Trevor Hildenberger (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless eighth in relief of Twins starter Kyle Gibson, while Matt Belisle handled a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save.

Dinkel wins individual title at Dodge City Invite

DODGE CITY, Kan. – Hays High’s Karee Dinkel shot a 1 over par 74 and won the Dodge City Invitational by nine shots. The Indians finished second, four strokes behind Garden City but kept their lead in the Western Athletic Conference over the Buffs by one point.

FHSU’s Perkins named MIAA Women’s Co-Golfer of the Week

Kansas City, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior Hannah Perkins earned MIAA Women’s Co-Golfer of the Week honors on Thursday (Sept. 7) for her efforts at the Central Region Preview. She shares the honor with Shi Qing Ong of Missouri Western.

Perkins tied with Ong for the top MIAA finish at the tournament. They tied for seventh individually, with Perkins shooting rounds of 73 and 75 to finish at 4-over (148) for the week. Her 1-over 73 was tied for the fourth lowest round by an MIAA golfer this week. Perkins helped the Tigers to an 11th place finish in their first tournament of the season.

This is the third MIAA Golfer of the Week honor for Perkins in her career at FHSU.

Perez homers twice as Royals rout Tigers

DETROIT (AP) – Salvador Perez homered twice as the Kansas City Royals broke open a close game to rout the Detroit Tigers 13-2 on Wednesday night.

The Royals broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the seventh, then scored seven in the eighth. Perez drove in three runs, while Whit Merrifield had three doubles and three RBIs. Alcides Escobar had four hits, falling a homer short of the cycle.

Jason Hammell (8-10) got the win, giving up two runs, nine hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out six while winning for the third time in four starts.

Tigers starter Matthew Boyd pitched six-plus innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

FHSU women’s golf finishes 11th in first tournament of the season

Olathe, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s golf team finished 11th at the season-opening Central Region Preview (Sept. 5-6). The event was held at Prairie Highlands Golf Club, a par-72, 5,901-yard course. The Tigers shot rounds of 322 and 326 to finish 72-over (648) for the tournament.

Junior Hannah Perkins led Fort Hays State as she finished in a tie for seventh individually. She fired rounds of 1-over (73) and 3-over (75) to finish 4-over (148) for the week, tied for the low score for an MIAA individual at the event.

Hannah Karasiuk tied for 45th individually with rounds of 84 and 80. Freshman Katie Brungardt tied for 58th with rounds of 81 and 86 in her first collegiate tournament. Taylor DeBoer finished in a tie for 69th with rounds of 84 and 85. Madison Roether shot 92 and 88.

Augustana won the tournament, shooting 12-over (588) as a team. Southwestern Oklahoma State finished second after shooting 598 as a team. Fellow MIAA program Central Oklahoma finished in a tie for third with Henderson State, both shooting 614. Hannah Hankinson of Augustana was the individual champion at 5-under par (139).

Monarchs fall three spots in first KVA regular season rankings

The Kansas Volleyball Association has released their first regular season volleyball rankings. TMP-Marian dropped three spots and is now No. 5 in Class 3A. Plainville, who was not ranked in the preseason poll, debuts at No. 5 in Class 2A. Wheatland-Grinnell is ranked first and Otis-Bison third in Class 1A Division II.

Dinkel breaks HHS record, Indians golf finishes second

SALINA, Kan. – Karee Dinkel set a new Hays High record for a nine-hole tournament, shooting a one-under par 34 to win the Salina Central Invitational golf tournament Tuesday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. Dinkel broke the old mark of 35 set by Tamara Munsch in 1998 then matched by Robin Hantla in 2002 and Maddie Curry in 2011. Two of the previous three were set in Salina.

Emily McGuire fired a 41 and finished third to help the Indians to a second place finish, four shots behind Manhattan.

Chin sets school record, Monarchs golf finishes fifth

GOODLAND, Kan. – Shannen Chin set a new 18-hole record at TMP-Marian, firing a 3-over par 74 to win the Goodland Invitational Tuesday at the Sugar Hills Golf Club. Chin breaks the old mark of 78 held by Karee Dinkel. Chin was 6-over on the front nine then blistered the back nine with birdies at 12, 14 and 16 while making pars at the rest of the way for a 33.

Rylie Cook of Johnson-Stanton County finished second with a 77. Kerrigan Rudolph of Goodland took third with an 80.

The Monarchs finished fifth in the team standings.

HHS boys soccer advances to finals; TMP-Marian loses

The Hays High boys soccer team advances to the finals of the Titan Classic in Wichita Tuesday, beating Wichita Southeast 3-2 in overtime. The Indians will face Wichita South in the finals Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. The host Titans edged Wichita Trinity 2-1.

TMP-Marian gives up a goal in the 79th minute and loses to Salina South 2-1 at the Maize South Invitational.
