Joe Dineen Jr., named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Back in a big way, Kansas redshirt-junior linebacker Joe Dineen Jr., returned to the field for the first time in nearly a year after missing the majority of the 2016 campaign with an injury, leading the Jayhawks to a 38-16 win over Southeast Missouri State. Dineen posted a game-high 15 tackles in the win on his way to being named the Big 12 Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Dineen, who was honored by the conference office for the first time in his KU career, was just one tackle shy of his career-high as he collected a Big 12 leading 15 total stops, including 11 solo hits. In addition, he recorded a career-high tying 2.5 tackles-for-loss.

Dineen’s 15 tackles mark the fifth time in his Jayhawk career he has tallied 10 or more tackles in a game and he was part of a KU defense that held SEMO to just 3.4 yards per play, the lowest average per play for a Jayhawk opponent since 2008.

Dineen is the first Jayhawk to pick up weekly conference honors on defense since his teammate Dorance Armstrong Jr., was selected for the award on Nov. 21, 2016 following KU’s win over Texas. A total of three Jayhawks were honored by the conference office in 2016 (Armstrong, Matthew Wyman [ST, Nov. 21] Cole Moos [ST, 10/17]).

The Jayhawks will continue their non-conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 9 by welcoming Central Michigan to Memorial Stadium for a 3 p.m. kickoff. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net,

K-State’s Reed tabbed Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Backed by a combined 181 yards in returns last week against Central Arkansas, which featured a 62-yard punt return touchdown, Kansas State junior D.J. Reed was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

It was Reed’s second career player of the week honor but the first of the special teams variety as he was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week following last year’s Texas Tech victory. K-State now has 44 player of the week accolades since 2011, the second most in the Big 12, while 24 have been special teams honors.

Reed took the opening kickoff 96 yards to the Bear 4-yard line to set up K-State’s first touchdown of the season, which bettered his previous long kickoff return of 76 yards last season at Baylor.

It was just the first of two long returns as Reed took a second-quarter punt 62 yards for a touchdown to give the Wildcats a 31-16 advantage. The score came on the first punt-return attempt of his career as he became the first Wildcat to take their first-career punt return for a touchdown since Thomas Randolph against New Mexico State in 1993.

The next Central Arkansas possession, Reed carded his fourth-career interception to set up another Wildcat touchdown as the Wildcats took a 22-point lead into the locker room en route to a 55-19 victory. With the pick, Reed became the first Wildcat to have an interception and a punt-return touchdown (non-blocked) in the same game since Terence Newman against Missouri in 2002.

K-State takes on Charlotte at 11 a.m., Saturday in Bill Snyder Family Stadium, a game that will be shown nationally on FSN.

Hays High 8, Wichita Home School 5

WICHITA, Kan.-Hays High outscored Wichita Home School 5-1 in the second half of their 8-5 opening round victory of the 2017 Titan Classic in Wichita. The Indians worked their way out of some first half trouble which saw them with a couple of three two goal deficits at 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2.  The Indians had three first half goals from Ethan Nunnery and trailed 4-3 at the break.

Both teams battled through mid to upper 90 degree heat which took out one of the game officials early in the second half. Hays High tied the game in the 48th minute on a penalty kick by Zach Wagner.  WHS answered with a goal in the 58th minute to take their final lead of the game, 5-4. Hays High would answer with the next four goals. Nunnery scored two more along with one each from Trae McCrae and Conner Teget. The Indians had a healthy dose of assists on the day as well. Wagner had four, Jacob Maska two, and Brian Cisneros and Peyton Thorell had one each.

With Nunnery’s five goals he is now the all time goal scoring leader in HHS history with 52 career goals. Eclipsing the mark of 47 set by his current head coach, Silas Hibbs. Wagner continues to add to his total as the all-time career assist leader for the Indians.

The Indians improve to 2-1 on the season and advance to Tuesday’s semifinals at 6pm where they will face Wichita Southeast who beat Hutchinson 3-1.

Homers and defense lead Royals past Tigers

DETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals hit three homers and got two spectacular defensive plays in a 7-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday afternoon.

Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar homered for the Royals, but the biggest plays of the game came on defense. Alex Gordon reached well over the left-field fence to rob Mikie Mahtook of a three-run homer, while Lorenzo Cain’s sliding catch took two RBIs away from Jose Iglesias.

Since trading Justin Verlander and Justin Upton on Thursday, the Tigers are 0-5 and have been outscored 36-11.

The Tigers trailed 7-3 going into the ninth, but Nicholas Castellanos hit a three-run homer off Brandon Maurer with one out. Maurer struck out Efren Navarro before James McCann and Jeimer Candelario singled to put the potential winning run on base.

Scott Alexander replaced Maurer and retired Mahtook for his third save in five chances.

Mezera and Brown earn MIAA football Athlete of the Week honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State football student-athletes Jacob Mezera and Brandon Brown earned two of the three MIAA Football Athlete of the Week honors for their efforts in the first week of the season. Mezera earned Offensive Athlete of the Week, while Brown earned Special Teams Athlete of the Week. Both were instrumental in Fort Hays State’s 48-7 win over Missouri Southern in the season opener last Thursday.

Mezera was efficient in helping Fort Hays State build a 41-7 lead over Missouri Southern by halftime and played just three quarters in the 41-point win. He was 21-of-29 passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns, while he also rushed for one touchdown. His two-yard touchdown run gave the Tigers the lead 7-0 early in the first quarter, then had touchdown passes of 28 and 10 yards in the second quarter. His longest pass of the night went for 40 yards to Layne Bieberle.

Brown was perfect on his kicking attempts in the win over Missouri Southern. He converted both of his field goal attempts from 39 and 36 yards, and went 6-of-6 on extra-point attempts to finish with 12 points for the game. He averaged 56.0 yards per kickoff with three touchbacks.

This is the second time both Mezera and Brown have been named MIAA Football Athletes of the Week in the same week. Both earned the honor last year with their efforts in a 54-41 win at Pittsburg State, a game that saw Mezera set a new school record for total offense (508 yards) and Brown recorded 18 points with a 4-of-4 effort on field goals and 6-of-6 effort on extra-point attempts.

After getting call check swing, Cain lifts Royals over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Lorenzo Cain hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the seventh inning after a checked-swing call went his way on a close two-strike pitch, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Minnesota Twins 5-4 Sunday.

Kansas City trailed 4-3 and had two on with two outs when Cain fouled off his first four pitches from rookie reliever Alan Busenitz (1-1). Cain took a fastball up, then checked his swing on an outside curveball in the dirt.

First base umpire Mike Muchlinski ruled no swing and plate umpire Marty Foster ejected Minnesota manager Paul Molitor, who was still in the dugout. Molitor then came out to argue.

Cain fouled off another pitch, then drove a fastball over Bryan Buxton and off the center-field wall. Cain ran through third base coach Mike Jirschele’s hold sign and tried for an inside-the-park home run, but was thrown out at the plate, with right fielder Max Kepler tossing to second baseman Brian Dozier for the relay to catcher Chris Gimenez.

Scott Alexander (4-3) pitched a scoreless inning of relief and picked up the win after starting pitcher Ian Kennedy allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Brandon Maurer pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
