Chiefs owner sued over New Mexico investment deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The owner of the Kansas City Chiefs is being accused in a lawsuit of improperly receiving hundreds of millions in state investment money through a kickback deal with New Mexico officials.

The Kansas City Star reports Sunday the New Mexico State Investment Council filed the lawsuit late last month against Clark Hunt and HFV Asset Management over the politically influenced investment deals.

Hunt didn’t comment to the newspaper on the lawsuit Sunday morning. Hunt’s father, Lamar, founded the Chiefs franchise and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The lawsuit says Hunt made a deal 12 years ago with two men with political connections who promised to steer New Mexico investment money to a hedge fund in exchange for payments. Hunt was a partner in the hedge fund.

New Mexico awarded $300 million to the hedge fund and paid millions in management fees. The lawsuit said one of the investment funds lost $13 million during the period.

“Hunt sought to gain unfair advantage by paying for influence over the process,” New Mexico officials said in the lawsuit.

The accusations are tied to the pay-to-play scandal that took place during administration of former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

New Mexico has already negotiated more than $30 million in settlements related to the pay-to-play investment scandal.

Late goals doom FHSU men’s soccer

LEBANON, Ill. – The 11th-ranked Fort Hays State men’s soccer team took a lead into halftime against McKendree University, but the Bearcats tallied two goals within a minute late in regulation to come back and defeat the Tigers 3-1 Saturday evening (Sept. 2). The Tigers fall to 0-1-1 on the season with the loss, while it was the season opener for the Bearcats.

Mauricio Etcheverry scored the first goal of the season for the Tigers in the opening minutes of the match. Tobias Patino provided the assist as he set up Etcheverry just two minutes into the match. Fort Hays State held on to the one-goal lead for the remainder of the first half, thanks in part to its defense limiting McKendree to just two shots in the period. The Tigers attempted five shots (two on goal) in the opening half.

The Tigers surrendered the equalizer in the 48th minute as Gonzalo Correa scored for the Bearcats on a pass from Alec Waller. The Tigers were aggressive the rest of the match, attempting eight shots in the second half (two on goal). However, none of the shots would find the back of the net.

The Bearcats pulled ahead in the waning minutes when Correa netted the game-winning goal in the 86th minute, his second goal of the match. McKendree doubled its lead just 59 seconds later when Blake Johnson scored the third and final goal to seal the victory for the Bearcats.

Michael Yantz was charged the loss in goal after saving two of the five shots on goal he faced. His record dips to 0-1-1 on the season. Patino led Fort Hays State with four shots in the contest, while Derick Gonzalez attempted three shots on the night.

The Tigers will be in action again next week with a pair of matches in Oklahoma starting on Thursday (Sept. 7) when they look to right the ship against Rogers State and No. 6 Midwestern State.

Bender leads Jayhawks over Southeast Missouri State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Peyton Bender threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start for Kansas Saturday, leading the way to a 38-16 season-opening victory over Southeast Missouri State.

Bender got things rolling early, connecting with wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. for a 77-yard touchdown pass on the Jayhawks’ third play on offense. He threw another touchdown to wide receiver Chase Harrell on the next drive, putting Kansas ahead 14-0 barely over six minutes into the game.

Sims caught a second touchdown pass from Bender late in the second quarter, a 16-yard strike with 13 seconds remaining in the half. He finished with 142 yards, a game-high.

The Redhawks’ two touchdowns both came off the hand of quarterback Jesse Hosket. He hit wide receiver Trevon Billington for a 9-yard score midway through the second quarter, and found wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson for 22 yards in the fourth.

Southeast Missouri State struggled to find consistent footing offensively throughout. Hosket finished with 170 yards, completing just 25 of 44 passes, constantly disrupted by the stout Kansas front seven.

THE TAKEAWAY

KANSAS: The Jayhawks are entering their third season under coach David Beaty, and appear to be finally finding their rhythm as a team. Both the offense and defense were moving in stride all game with few major errors. Beaty and his staff still have some things to iron out before the real heat of the season begins, but overall, a strong opener.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE: The Redhawks were facing an uphill battle entering this game, and were expectedly outmatched. Once they return to FCS competition next week, we should see what type of team they really are.

UP NEXT

KANSAS: The Jayhawks will host Central Michigan next Saturday, their final non-conference home game of the season.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE: The Redhawks are on the road again next week, as they will face Dayton in their return to FCS competition.

Ertz shines as No. 20 K-State routs Central Arkansas

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Jesse Ertz threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns in only three quarters of work, sending No. 20 Kansas State to a 55-19 rout of overmatched Central Arkansas on Saturday night.

Byron Pringle had three catches for 121 yards and a score, and Isaiah Harris had three catches for 118 yards and a TD, as seven different Wildcats reached the end zone. That helped them overcome a shaky night by their rebuilt defense and give coach Bill Snyder another season-opening win.

Snyder, who underwent treatment for throat cancer in the offseason, looked as energetic as ever on the sideline in his familiar purple wind breaker, barking at players and officials alike all night.

The 77-year-old coach had plenty to bark about, too.

Hayden Hildebrand threw for 198 yards and a touchdown for Central Arkansas, one of the top teams in the Football Championship Subdivision. Carlos Blackman added 114 yards on the ground.

The Bears played the Wildcats to a 10-10 draw through the first quarter, but Isaiah Zuber’s TD reception and D.J. Reed’s 62-yard punt return score blew the game open. Dalton Schoen’s 70-yard TD made it 38-16 at halftime, and the high-flying Wildcats never looked back.

Snyder even emptied the benches in the fourth quarter, giving backup quarterback Skylar Thompson a chance to shine. He engineered a touchdown drive that Dalvin Warmack capped with a nifty run.

THE TAKEAWAY

Central Arkansas: The Bears returned 18 starters from a 10-win team, so it wasn’t a surprise that they made things tough on Kansas State early. But they didn’t have enough speed, size or depth to hang with a team that many think could contend for a Big 12 championship.

Kansas State: There were plenty of teaching points after this one, regardless of the score. The defense blew too many coverages and gave up too many yards, and the defensive line was often manhandled by the Bears up front. The offense stunned Central Arkansas through the air, but touted running back Alex Barnes was held to 29 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Mauer, Twins erupt for win over Royals

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Mauer went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Eduardo Escobar hit two home runs while driving in six runs, as the Minnesota Twins erupted for a 17-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Brian Dozier added a three-run homer and Byron Buxton went 3 for 5 with three runs, making starter Kyle Gibson (9-10) as comfortable as possible over six scoreless innings to help the Twins improve to 21-10 since Aug. 2. They took a 1 1/2-game lead for the second AL wild card spot into the night.

Dozier, Mauer, Buxton, Jorge Polanco and Escobar, the first five batters in the lineup, combined to go 13 for 21 with 13 runs and 15 RBIs.

The Royals, 11-20 since July 31, were shut out for the 15th time this season — fifth in the last nine games.

Royals starter Onelki Garcia (0-1) gave up four runs, four hits and a walk while getting just one out in the first inning in his first major league start.

Brock Osweiler returning to Broncos as backup QB

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Brock Osweiler is returning to Denver as the Broncos’ backup quarterback.

The Broncos agreed to terms with Peyton Manning’s former apprentice Saturday on a one-year deal after he was cut by the Cleveland Browns.

Provided he passes his physical Monday, Osweiler will serve as Trevor Siemian’s understudy in his second stint in Denver.

The Broncos needed another quarterback because Paxton Lynch, their 2016 first-round draft pick who was beaten out by Siemian for a second straight summer, will miss a month or more with a sprained throwing shoulder.

Osweiler went 5-2 in relief of an injured Manning during the Broncos’ Super Bowl season two years ago before bolting to Houston in free agency.

The Texans traded him in March to the Browns, who will pay Osweiler his $16 million guaranteed salary this season minus the offset from the Broncos. The minimum for a sixth-year pro is $775,000.

FHSU volleyball picks up two wins Saturday in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team wrapped up the opening weekend with a pair five-set victories Saturday (Sept. 2) at the Country Inn & Suites Invitational, hosted by the University of Sioux Falls. The Tigers rallied to defeat Black Hills State in the morning before going the distance against William Jewell later that evening.

FHSU moved back to .500 for the season, improving to 2-2 overall, while both the Yellow Jackets and Cardinals finished the opening weekend 1-3.

Three of the four matches the Tigers played this weekend went to five sets. In comparison, FHSU went the distance in five matches all last season, going 4-1 in those contests.

Callie Christensen earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for her performance this weekend. The senior asserted her dominance at the net, recording an astonishing 30 total blocks (1.67 per set). She added 39 kills, leading the team with a .218 attack percentage.

Logan Wallick had a strong day offensively, leading the Tigers in kills in both matches. She opened the day with 19 kills in the first match, the most kills in a match for a freshman at FHSU since 2011 (Sara Hewson, 9/16/11, at Pittsburg State). After accomplishing a feat that hadn’t occured in 176 matches, it took Wallick mere hours to duplicate it, leading the way with 19 kills in the nightcap.

The Tigers will return to action next weekend when they head to North Canton, Ohio for five matches, starting with a contest against Roberts Wesleyan College Thursday (Sept. 7).

Fort Hays State 3, Black Hills State 2 (25-20, 19-25, 12-25, 25-19, 15-13)

Despite a slow start, the Tigers rallied for a five-set victory over Black Hills State to open the day. FHSU kept its poise after falling behind early in each of the first four sets, putting together big rallies to win the first and fourth frames. The teams then traded points for much of the fifth set before the Tigers scored four of the last five points to secure the match.

Logan Wallick went off for a match-high 19 kills, adding three block assists and three digs. Callie Christensen (10 kills, six total blocks) and Kylie Rollman (10 kills, two block assists) also reached double-figures in kills. Amirah Bentley tossed up 43 assists in the win, adding 11 digs, one block, one service ace and two kills. Libero Taylor White once again led the way with 28 digs, while Abbie Hayes (14) and Azlyn Cassaday (13) also reached double figures.

Black Hills State held a slight advantage in hitting as a team, totaling a .147 hitting percentage compared to FHSU’s .139. The Tiger front line totaled eight team blocks, but couldn’t keep up with the Yellow Jackets as they blocked 11 attempts.

The Tigers came out of the gate a bit sluggish, falling behind by as many as five early in the first set. BHSU maintained its lead until the Tigers scored eight-straight points to rally from 18-14 down to go in front 22-18 with Kailey Klibbe serving. FHSU went on to secure the set five points later, ultimately using an 11-2 run to win 25-20. Wallick had five kills down the stretch, including the set-winning kill on a pass from Bentley.

The Yellow Jackets bounced back by dominating the second and third sets to take an authoritative 2-1 lead in the match. FHSU never led in either set, and the lone tie came at 1-1 in the second frame. Black Hills State bookended the third set with a pair of seven-point runs, going in front 7-0 before winning the game with seven straight points.

It was more of the same in the fourth set, as BHSU scored six of the first seven points to quickly take the lead. The Tigers went on a run of their own after trailing 10-7, winning nine of the next 10 rallies to grab a 16-11 lead. The Yellow Jackets closed the gap to two, but a pair of kills from Wallick helped FHSU even the match at two.

The teams went back and forth for much of the final set, with neither side scoring more than two points in a row until the Tigers closed it out on a 4-1 run. There were 12 ties and seven lead changes in the final set alone, with Christensen putting FHSU in front for good with back-to-back kills. Sydney Dixon then handed the Tigers the victory with a strong kill from the left side.

Fort Hays State 3, William Jewell 2 (25-17, 25-13, 24-26, 30-32, 15-4)

The Tigers wrapped up the weekend with a five-set victory over William Jewell. Four Tigers reached double figures in kills, led by Logan Wallick (19), Sydney Dixon (13), Kylie Rollman (13) and Callie Christensen (10).

Christensen led a strong team performance at the net defensively, leading the Tigers to 14 team blocks. The senior middle hitter had nine blocks of her own, including three solo. Tatum Bartels added five (one solo) while Dixon added four. Becca Page took over setting duties in the second set, taking advantage of the opportunity by tossing up a match-high 42 assists. Taylor White added four assists and led the way with 22 digs, while Abbie Hayes contributed a career-high 19 digs.

The Tigers hit .172 as a team while holding WJC to a miniscule .036 attack percentage. The Cardinals held their own at the net, tallying 13 team blocks.

Fort Hays State fell behind early in the first set, but consecutive kills from Wallick gave the Tigers the lead for good, 11-10. FHSU used a 6-1 run to take a commanding 21-14 lead before a Cardinal attack error sealed the victory later in the set.

Both teams went on incredible runs in the second set, with William Jewell opening the frame by scoring the first 10 points and 12 of the first 13. The Tigers swapped out setters at that point, and that is all it took to steal all the momentum. FHSU responded with an astounding 24-1 run, including 17-straight points to run away with the set, 25-13.

The next two sets were close for their entirety, with neither team leading by more than four points. There were 28 ties and 14 lead changes through the two sets. The Tigers led the third set 22-20, but WJC rallied out of a timeout to stay alive with a 26-24 victory. After keeping trading the lead for the entirety of the fourth set, FHSU fought off a pair of set points to tie things up at 24. Consecutive kills from Wallick gave the Tigers a chance to seal the match, but the Cardinals were not finished. The Tigers had another match point opportunity at 29-28, but WJC went on a 4-1 run to send the match to a deciding fifth set.

Thankfully the Cardinals rally came up just short, as the Tigers dominated the fifth set to take the match. FHSU captured the first six points behind a pair of kills from Rollman and two big blocks. The Tigers took care of business the rest of the set, swinging at a .389 clip while limiting WJC to a -.200 attack percentage. Bartels and Dixon teamed up for a block to seal the win.

Tiger women’s soccer earns second straight shutout

TOPEKA, Kan. – It’s two wins in two games for the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team as they captured a 2-0 win over Upper Iowa in Topeka this afternoon to conclude their first weekend of play for 2017. With the win, the Tigers are now 2-0 to start the season after defeating two NSIC programs at Washburn this weekend.

The go-ahead goal for the Tigers came at the feet of Catalina Hernandez as she netted an unassisted goal twenty minutes into the second half. This goal was Hernandez’s second in two matches for the Tigers.

Senior Kristen Thompson stood her ground in the net for Fort Hays State as she gathered three saves in three shots on goal against her. Thompson picks up her second win of the season in net for the Tigers.

Chiefs put Hali on PUP list, send Spiller packing to make 53

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have placed linebackers Tamba Hali and Dadi Nicolas on the physically unable to perform list and released veteran running back C.J. Spiller.

Kansas City also traded offensive lineman Isaiah Battle to Seattle on Saturday for a conditional 2018 draft pick and placed running back Spencer Ware and cornerback Ashton Lampkin on injured reserve.

Hali, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is dealing with balky knees. Nicolas is coming off a knee injury last season.

Spiller was the biggest surprise among 30 players who were cut. Not only did he appear rejuvenated after a long history of injuries, his release left the Chiefs with rookie Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West as the only running backs on their roster.

Broncos release three-time Pro Bowler T.J. Ward

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have broken up the “No Fly Zone,” releasing three-time Pro Bowl strong safety T.J. Ward with a year left on his contract.

General manager John Elway said cutting the eighth-year pro was a difficult decision “after everything he’s done for our football team.”

“He was a respected teammate whose attitude and physical mindset played a big part in our success, especially during our Super Bowl run,” Elway said. “We thank T.J. for his contributions as a Bronco and wish him nothing but the best in his future.”

Ward set a nasty tone for Denver’s defense as a founding member of the “No Fly Zone” secondary that includes Aqib Talib, Chris Harris Jr., Darian Stewart and Bradley Roby.

Ward was due $4.5 million this year in the final season of his four-year, $22.5 million contract he signed in 2014. The Broncos will eat about $1.3 million in dead money from his prorated signing bonus.

But this decision wasn’t about money or cap space. It was about looking toward the future.

Second-year pro Justin Simmons has stood out in place of Ward, who missed most of training camp and all of the preseason with a torn hamstring.

Abilene 32, TMP 27

ABILENE, Kan.-Abilene built a 20-0 lead over TMP early in the second quarter of Friday night’s high school football opener at Cowboy Stadium. TMP would score 14 unanswered points to end the first half to make it a game. The Monarchs had a chance to cut the lead but missed a field goal late in the first half and trailed by six at halftime. TMP quarterback David McFarland finished the first half with 320 yards passing and a couple of touchdowns with Tate Garcia on the receiving end of both.

The Monarchs came out strong to open the third quarter as they drove inside the Abilene 10 yard line but the drive stalled on downs.  Abilene would take advantage as they scored on a 92 yard touchdown pass to take a two score advantage, 26-14.  The Cowboys weren’t done with their third quarter scoring as Trey Hoerner crossed the goal line for his second score to give his team a 32-14 lead.

That 18 point lead held up until McFarland found Creighton Renz for a 70 yard score with 8:59 to play in the game. TMP would answer again with 4:55 to play when McFarland scrambled to his right and got the ball to Karl Rack who found himself wide open at the goal line. TMP would get the ball back late in the game and drove to the Cowboy’s five yard line and after a penalty McFarland was sacked on the final play to secure the win for Abilene.

McFarland finished the night with 650 yards and four touchdowns. TMP drops to 0-1 on the season and will travel to Ellis next Friday night to take on the Railroaders.
