Royals scoreless streak at 43 innings after loss to Tampa Bay

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals extended their scoreless streak to a franchise-record 43 innings, getting shut out for a fourth straight game in a 12-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

The Royals haven’t scored since the second inning of a 3-2 loss to Colorado last Thursday. Kansas City was blanked three times over the weekend by Cleveland. The 1968 Chicago Cubs and 1906 Philadelphia Athletics hold the major league record at 48 scoreless innings, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The 1992 Cubs were the last team to be blanked in four straight games, and it hasn’t happened in the AL since the 1964 Washington Senators – nine years before the adoption of the designated hitter. No team has been shut out in five straight games since at least 1913, according to information gathered from baseball-reference.com.

The Royals were two games out of first place on July 28 after a nine-game winning streak. Since then, they have lost 19 of 29 and are 10 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland and three games back of Minnesota for the final AL wild card.

Austin Pruitt (7-4) pitched six one-run innings for Tampa Bay, and Matt Andriese allowed one more hit while getting a three-inning save, his first this season.

Lucas Duda, Wilson Ramos and Logan Morrison went deep for Tampa Bay, with Duda getting his 25th and Morrison his 32nd of the season. Evan Longoria and Morrison hit back-to-back doubles after Duda’s shot in the third off Ian Kennedy (4-10).

Bills trade linebacker Ragland to Chiefs for 4th-round pick

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – Linebacker Reggie Ragland will get a fresh start in Kansas City after the Chiefs acquired the second-year player in a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

In exchange, the Bills acquired a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft.

The Chiefs land a player with the potential of being an upgrade for Josh Mauga, who was released earlier in the day. Ragland also gets a chance to play in a three-lineman, four-linebacker-styled defense, which he was accustomed to at Alabama.

For the Bills, they cut ties with a 2016 second-round draft pick who was in jeopardy of being cut this weekend when teams establish their 53-player roster.

The Bills drafted Ragland because he was considered an ideal fit in former coach Rex Ryan’s defense. That changed when Ryan was fired and replaced by Sean McDermott, who prefers a 4-3 system.

Ragland missed all of last season after tearing a ligament in his left knee during training camp.

Broncos QB Paxton Lynch likely out several weeks

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – A person with knowledge of the diagnosis says Broncos backup quarterback Paxton Lynch will miss several weeks with a sprained right shoulder.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t addressed the issue publicly, said Lynch won’t need surgery.

KUSA-TV in Denver first reported the severity of the injury, which Lynch sustained in his one series against Green Bay on Saturday night.

Lynch’s injury leaves Denver in a quarterback quandary beginning with Thursday night’s season finale against Arizona, where the only other available QB aside from starter Trevor Siemian is undrafted rookie Kyle Sloter.

The Broncos are unlikely to sign a vested veteran because his entire 2017 salary would be guaranteed if he’s on the roster Week 1. So, they’d probably go with Sloter as their backup until Lynch returns or sign another young QB who’s among the nearly 1,200 players who will be cut this weekend.

Gomes hits slam as Indians finish shutout sweep of Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — Yan Gomes hit a grand slam to highlight Cleveland’s nine-run second inning against two Kansas City rookie left-handers as the Indians completed a three-game shutout sweep over the Royals with a 12-0 win on Sunday.

Carlos Carrasco (13-6) allowed six hits in seven innings, and the Indians, who haven’t given up a run in 28 innings, outscored the Royals 20-0 in the series.

It’s the first time Cleveland has posted three straight shutouts since 1956.

Kansas City hasn’t scored a run in 34 consecutive innings, a team record and the longest drought in the majors this season.

Chiefs’ Spencer Ware tears knee ligament, could miss season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Spencer Ware could require season-ending surgery after tearing one ligament in his right knee and damaging another during Friday night’s preseason game in Seattle.

Ware had an MRI on Saturday that revealed the extent of the injury.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Sunday that Ware tore the posterior cruciate ligament, an injury that itself is not always season-ending. But Burkholder said Ware also damaged the lateral collateral ligament, and the combination of injuries will likely require surgery.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that third-round draft pick Kareem Hunt will be the starter for the season opener on Sept. 7 at New England. Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller will likely serve as backups.

Charles flashes in Denver debut, Broncos beat Packers

DENVER (AP) — Jamaal Charles’ impressive Denver debut included four rushes for 27 yards Saturday night in the Broncos’ 20-17 preseason win over the Green Bay Packers.

Charles is embarking on a comeback with the Broncos after the Chiefs released him over the winter following two injury-plagued seasons and several knee surgeries that had limited him to eight games since 2014.

In addition to averaging almost seven yards a carry, Charles caught a couple of passes and got good news when he was cleared to return to the field after being evaluated for a concussion midway through his audition.

Even better news would be waking up Sunday without a swollen knee or two.

The Broncos have a crowded backfield as it is, but a healthy Charles could be a valuable wild card for Mike McCoy’s new offense.

Von Miller also made his preseason debut and sacked Aaron Rodgers for an 11-yard loss, forcing the Packers to settle for Mason Crosby’s 52-yard field goal and ending Rodgers’ night after 10 snaps. (He was 3 for 5 for 12 yards). Miller spun past Jason Spriggs, who was subbing for injured right tackle Bryan Bulaga, and split a double team on his way to dumping Rodgers.

Rodgers was harassed into the worst game of his career the last time he came to Denver in 2015.

After Green Bay safety Kentrell Brice returned an interception 42 yards to the Denver 2 minutes after Rodgers was sacked, backup Brett Hundley trotted out to hand off to Ty Montgomery for the touchdown plunge and a 10-0 lead.

Miller’s day was over after that play.

The Broncos were careful not to expose Miller after a rash of injuries on defense claimed fellow pass rushers Shaq Barrett, Shane Ray and Derek Wolfe this offseason.

Trevor Siemian, in his first game since coach Vance Joseph declared him the starting quarterback over Paxton Lynch, bounced back from his interception to lead Denver on three impressive drives, Lynch came in and got hurt on his only series.

The first series was a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by C.J. Anderson’s untouched 16-yard trot but marred by the loss of top receiver Demaryius Thomas to a groin injury.

Siemian then drove the Broncos to the Green Bay 12, but Anderson was held to no gain on third-and-1 and fourth-and-1. Siemian, however, went 6 of 7 for 48 yards in the two-minute drill, and Brandon McManus kicked a 28-yard field goal to tie it at 10 as the first half expired.

Siemian finished 13 of 22 for 127 yards and had one interception.

The Packers managed just 102 first-half yards against a Denver defense missing six starters.

Lynch guided Denver on the go-ahead scoring drive — McManus was good from 46 yards — to start the second half. The second-year QB hurt his right (throwing) shoulder on the drive, apparently when he slid on it after a scramble.

He was replaced by Kyle Sloter, whose 17-yard TD pass to Hunter Sharp made it 20-10.

Hundley’s 6-yard keeper made it 20-17 early in the fourth quarter.

TAKE A KNEE: Broncos right tackle Menelik Watson gave new meaning to the term “take a knee” when he proposed to his fiance after the starters were taken out of the game. Azania Stewart, a member of the British national basketball team, said yes.

STANDING UP: Broncos LB Brandon Marshall said he was considering taking a knee in a revival of his national anthem protests of last year, but he stood during the “Star Spangled Banner.” Marshall didn’t line up with his teammates, however, positioning himself several steps behind the row of Broncos players.

SCUFFLING: Two of Denver’s defenders mixed it up when fiery cornerback Aqib Talib tried to stop linebacker Todd Davis from jawing with some Packers. Talib shoved Davis in the chest and Davis took exception, removed his helmet and shoved it into Talib’s face. The scuffling continued to the sideline.

SITTING OUT: In addition to Thomas, DE Zach Kerr (knee) and S Will Parks (hip) got hurt in the first half for Denver, and Packers OLB Nick Perry was shaken up before halftime.

Zimmer makes dazzling catch as Indians blank Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — Mike Clevinger pitched six sharp innings and rookie Bradley Zimmer made a sensational catch in center field before ending Jason Hammel’s bid for a perfect game, leading the Cleveland Indians to a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Roberto Perez hit a two-run homer off Hammel (6-10), and Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Santana also connected as the defending AL champions moved a season-high 16 games over .500 at 72-56.

The Royals fell eight games back in the AL Central and were shut out for the second straight night. They have not scored in 25 innings.

Clevinger (7-5) struck out a career-high nine and matched Hammel pitch for pitch before giving way to Cleveland’s bullpen.

But if not for Zimmer’s catch , Clevinger may not have gotten past the fifth.

FHSU names track in honor of legendary Coach Alex Francis

FHSU Sports Information

HAYS, Kan. – On Saturday, August 26, Fort Hays State University held the dedication of its new Track and Field Facility, along with naming the track “Alex Francis Track”. Several members of the Hays community, along with current and past athletes and coaches, were on hand for the dedication ceremony.

The FHSU Track and Field Facility consists of a nine-lane, 400-meter, all-weather running track and a full complement of field event areas. The current site was chosen more than two years ago and construction of the $3.28 million facility began in April of 2016. The complex includes a press box and fixed bleacher seating for 500 spectators on the east side. Other structures provide field equipment storage, a training room, a meeting room, and public restrooms. Construction completed in December of 2016 and the facility hosted three track and field events in the Spring of 2017. Installation of a new timing and results board occurred in August of 2017 and future upgrades include the addition of lights to the facility as funding becomes available.

The track is named for Alex Francis, the highly successful man who coached track and field and cross country at Fort Hays State University from 1946 until his retirement in 1980. The track at Lewis Field Stadium was previously named after Coach Francis and his name and legacy has been carried forward to Fort Hays State’s current track, constructed in 2016 and dedicated on August 26, 2017. His cross country teams won four national titles (1963, 1965, 1968, 1969) and finished national runner-up four times. He also guided cross country teams to 11 conference titles. His track and field squads captured 17 conference titles and overall he guided 139 Tiger athletes to All-America status in cross country and track and field combined.

The javelin event area at the facility has been named in honor of the late Zach Kindler, who was a four-time All-American in the event. At the age of 35, Kindler passed away unexpectedly during his highly successful tenure as track and field and cross country coach at Baker University in 2014. He was recently inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame and his family was present at the dedication to see his legacy live on at the new facility for FHSU Track and Field.

If you are interested in donating to future upgrades or the naming of an event area at the facility, please contact the FHSU Foundation at (785) 628-5620. There are still several naming opportunities available.

Seahawks win 26-13; Chiefs’ Ware injures right knee

SEATTLE (AP) — Kansas City may be looking for a starting running back after Spencer Ware injured his right knee in the Chiefs’ 26-13 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night.

Russell Wilson was again brilliant for Seattle, throwing for 200 yards and a touchdown, but his performance was secondary to the injury suffered by Ware and the impact it could have for the Chiefs.

Ware remained on the turf after making a 6-yard reception on a pass from Alex Smith in the first quarter. Ware appeared to take an awkward step with his right leg during the play and team trainers were looking at his knee while he was down on the field. Players from both teams took a knee while Ware was examined, and he was taken off the field on a cart.

It was the second straight week a starter in Seattle was taken off the field with a knee injury. The Seahawks lost starting left tackle George Fant for the season last week due because of a torn ACL in his right knee.

The Chiefs have depth at running back with veteran Charcandrick West and impressive rookie Kareem Hunt, who averaged 4.3 yards per carry filling in after Ware as hurt. But Ware’s strength was his versatility as a runner and pass catcher out of the backfield. Ware rushed for 921 yards and had another 447 yards receiving last season for the Chiefs, finding a home in Kansas City after starting his career with the Seahawks.

Ware’s injury was part of a lackluster effort form Kansas City’s offense. Smith was 7 of 17 for just 44 yards although there were a handful of drops. The Chiefs had just 102 total yards in the first half against Seattle’s starters and Kansas City’s only touchdown came on a 95-yard kickoff return from De’Anthony Thomas .

Wilson’s stellar preseason continued , playing the entire first half and one drive of the second half. He threw a 2-yard touchdown to Tre Madden and led Seattle on four scoring drives, including three field goals by Blair Walsh. In parts of three preseason games, Wilson is 29 of 41 for 447 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The biggest area of concern for Seattle coming into the week was how the offensive line would respond to the loss of left tackle Fant. His replacement, Rees Odhiambo, went mostly unnoticed with the exception of one play early in the third quarter. Chris Jones, in his preseason debut following offseason knee surgery, made Odhiambo whiff and engulfed Wilson for the only sack allowed by the Seahawks starters.

MAHOMES MADNESS: Kansas City rookie Patrick Mahomes wasn’t quite as impressive as the first two weeks of the preseason. Mahomes was 8 of 15 for 70 yards passing and led one scoring drive in four possessions.

BACKUP BATTLE: The backup QB role in Seattle could be back open after Trevone Boykin had a miserable night and Austin Davis was solid. Boykin missed on all six attempts with an interception, while Davis was 5-of 5 for 64 yards and a 28-yard TD pass to Tanner McEvoy in the fourth quarter.

BENNETT SITS: Seahawks DE Michael Bennett continued to sit on the Seattle bench during the national anthem. For the second straight week, teammate Justin Britt stood next to Bennett with his right hand on Bennett’s shoulder. Cliff Avril stood for most of the anthem before sitting next to Bennett at the end.

SITTING OUT: Chiefs DE Justin Houston was expected to make his debut but was scratched due to illness. Safety Eric Berry and outside linebacker Tamba Hali were also among the veterans rested.

Seattle wide receiver Tyler Lockett went through full pregame warmups but did not playas he continues to recover from a broken leg suffered late last season. Also sitting out was running backs Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise, and linebacker Michael Wilhoite.

Merritt pitches Indians to win over Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie Ryan Merritt pitched a career-high 6 2/3 innings and the Cleveland Indians recorded their AL-leading 13th shutout with a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Merritt (1-0) was called up from Triple-A Columbus before the game to take the injured Danny Salazar’s spot in the rotation. The 25-year-old left-hander scattered seven hits for his second career win, both coming against Kansas City.

Three relievers finished the eight-hitter for the AL Central leaders.

Seating project complete on west side of Lewis Field Stadium

HAYS, Kan. – A summer filled with facility improvements at Fort Hays State saw the completion of the chair back seating project on the west side of Lewis Field Stadium last week. Just over 2,000 new black folding seats replaced the old gold chair back seats and a majority of the bench seating previously on the west side of the stadium, while stairwells widened and handrails were installed.

The next upgrade to Lewis Field Stadium will take place following the 2017 season as a new video/scoreboard will be installed at the north end of the field, replacing the old scoreboard. The size of the new board will be massive, measuring at 63 feet wide and just over 36 feet tall. With a 10-foot tall base to support the board, the finished board will stand over 45 feet high.
