K-State checks in at 20th in Preseason AP Top 25

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the second time in the last four years, Kansas State was ranked in the Preseason Associated Press Top 25 as the Wildcats are 20th in the preseason survey released Monday.

K-State, which was also ranked 20th in the 2014 Preseason AP Top 25, was placed 19th in the 2017 Preseason Amway Coaches Poll released on August 3.

Other Big 12 programs joining the Wildcats in the 2017 Preseason AP Top 25 were Oklahoma (7th), Oklahoma State (10th), West Virginia (22nd) and Texas (23rd).

K-State returns 44 letterwinners – including 18 starters – from last year’s squad that earned a 9-4 record and capped its season with a 33-28 victory over Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl. The Wildcats, who were predicted to finish third in the Big 12 by the league’s media, placed four players on the Preseason All-Big 12 team in fullback Winston Dimel, offensive lineman Dalton Risner, defensive back D.J. Reed, and defensive end Reggie Walker.

Cuthbert, Escobar lead Royals to victory over Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cheslor Cuthbert homered and drove in three runs, Alcides Escobar also had three RBIs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 7-4 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Cam Gallagher also drove in a run for the Royals, who finally got their bats going after scoring just once in the first two games of the series. Kansas City piled up 12 hits and six runs off Cleveland starter Danny Salazar (5-6), and finished with 15 hits for the day.

Jason Hammel (6-9) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk to win for only the second time since June 19. The Royals’ right-hander had been 1-3 with six no-decisions during that span.

Kelvin Herrera gave up a run against the bottom of the Indians’ order before finishing the game.

Lynch starts, Siemian throws TD as Broncos beat 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Vance Joseph isn’t yet ready to declare a winner in the race to be Denver’s starting quarterback between Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian.

If he is, the Broncos’ head coach is keeping it to himself.

Lynch led three scoring drives in his bid for the job while Siemian, who started the preseason opener a week ago, came off the bench to throw a touchdown pass as the Broncos beat the San Francisco 49ers 33-14 on Saturday night.

“The time frame’s not important,” Joseph said. “What’s important is we get it right. It could be this week, it could be next week.”

On a night when Denver forced four turnovers in the first half, running C.J. Anderson got into the end zone and Brandon McManus kicked four field goals, the majority of focus was on the ongoing competition between the Broncos’ two quarterbacks.

Despite a plea earlier this week from vice president of football operations John Elway that one of the two take control of the job, neither quarterback did much to separate himself from the other.

Lynch was 9 of 13 and showed good pocket presence by scrambling out of trouble a few times, but managed only 39 yards through the air in less than two quarters.

Denver’s first-round draft pick a year ago, Lynch is trying not to get caught up in the situation.

“You can’t compare your progress to somebody else’s progress because when you’re worried about the other guy getting better, you’re wasting time not focused on yourself and making yourself better,” Lynch said. “That’s really what I’ve been doing.”

Siemian put up more passing numbers (49) on his first drive and finished 8 of 11 for 93 yards. Afterward, the 2015 seventh-round pick said he feels he’s done enough to be the starter.

“I think so,” Siemian said. “I’m not the coach but I think so.”

As good as their offense was, the Broncos’ defense was better despite being without linebackers Von Miller and Brandon Marshall and cornerback T.J. Ward.

Denver converted the three turnovers — two fumble recoveries and an impressive interception by Chris Lewis-Harris, who wrestled the ball from 49ers wide receiver Marquise Goodwin as both men fell to the turf — into 13 points.

San Francisco’s Brian Hoyer was 8 of 11 for 89 yards and an interception while garnering a 58.5 passer rating. Third-round draft pick C.J. Beathard passed for 110 yards and a touchdown in his attempt to beat out Matt Barkley for the backup job.

“That whole game was concerning,” 49ers rookie coach Kyle Shanahan said. “Start off the first half with four turnovers. The penalties. Struggling to run the ball, too. It’s really tough to win when you put your team in that situation.”

MILD MOMENTS

Multiple scuffles broke out when the teams held joint practices earlier in the week, but the game was relatively tame in comparison. After San Francisco linebacker Dekoda Watson was called for unnecessary roughness on the opening drive, both squads settled down.

ROOKIE WATCH

Broncos left tackle Garrett Boles had a forgettable first half. The 20th overall selection was whistled for three holding penalties and a false start in the first half. One of the holding calls negated a touchdown, while the false start came on third-and-1. Boles was born in nearby Walnut Creek, although he grew up in Utah.

San Francisco first-rounder Reuben Foster was mostly quiet, although the rookie linebacker showed good speed and range to bring down Anderson near the sidelines in the second quarter. Foster played despite suffering a sprain in his surgically repaired right shoulder during the practices with the Broncos.

FLAGS GALORE

The teams combined for 22 penalties for 176 yards, although it could have been much worse. During a punt return in the third quarter, five flags were thrown on the same play including four on the Broncos. When the dust settled, the penalties offset and the play was re-run. “It was sloppy,” Joseph said.

HOYER’S WHIFF

Hoyer fumbled in the first quarter when the ball slipped out of his hand when the 49ers’ quarterback was dropping back to pass. “My arm went forward and the ball didn’t go with it,” Hoyer said. “It’s literally the worst feeling I’ve had as a quarterback.”

LATE JUICE

Undrafted free agent Victor Bolden provided a late spark for the 49ers with a 104-yard kickoff return for touchdown.

MEMORIES

This was the Broncos’ first appearance at Levi’s Stadium since beating Carolina in Super Bowl 50.

TEAM TIES

The 49ers teams captains — Watson, linebacker Elvis Dumervil, left guard Zane Beadles and running back Kapri Bibbs — all previously played for the Broncos.

SITTING OUT

Both teams were without several key players. San Francisco sat defensive lineman DeForest Buckner (ankle), left guard Joshua Garnett (knee) and cornerback Jimmie Ward (hamstring), while Denver was missing running backs Devontae Booker (wrist) and Jamaal Charles (knee) and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders (shoulder).

Bauer wins 12th as Indians blank Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Trevor Bauer pitched 6 1/3 innings as the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Saturday night.

Bauer (12-8) won his fifth straight decision — the longest winning streak of his career that started after a July 17 loss. He gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out four.

Relievers Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen did not allow a hit over the final 2 2/3 innings to complete the shutout.

Bauer joins teammates Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco as 12-game winners. The Indians are the only team in the majors with three 12-game winners.

Roberto Perez delivered the clutch blow, a two-out, two-strike, two-run single in the fourth inning that scored Jay Bruce and Carlos Santana.

Jose Ramirez and Jason Kipnis hit consecutive doubles in the first inning for the first Cleveland run.

3 Chiefs throw TD passes in win over Bengals

CINCINNATI (AP) — Rookie Patrick Mahomes threw a pair of touchdown passes, solidifying his spot as the Chiefs’ primary backup, and three Kansas City quarterbacks threw for a score on Saturday night during a 30-12 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Kansas City (1-1) got a lot to like out of its offense overall and its top pick in particular.

Mahomes moved into the role of Alex Smith’s backup a week ago and was smooth against the Bengals (1-1), who chased him from the pocket but couldn’t stop his accurate on-the-move throws. Mahomes, the 10th overall pick from Texas Tech, was 10 of 14 for 88 yards with touchdowns of 1 and 7 yards.

The Chiefs scored on each of their first five possessions for a 30-9 lead. Smith was 8 of 9 for 83 yards with a TD, and Tyler Bray threw an 18-yard touchdown on his first play.

Kansas City piled up 410 yards, including 228 rushing. Charcandrick West ran for 113 yards on only seven carries.

The Bengals had to settle for a pair of field goals during Andy Dalton’s three possessions. He was 7 of 13 for 98 yards with one sack.

Cincinnati’s kicking competition remained all even. Randy Bullock and Jake Elliott have made all of their attempts in two games. Bullock connected from 47 and 26 yards on Saturday, while Elliott was good from 32 and 39 yards.

ROOKIE WATCH

Chiefs: Third-round pick Kareem Hunt got a chance to show his versatility. He was limited to one carry and one catch in the preseason opener. On Saturday, he was the featured running back on the first two drives. Hunt had 8 carries for 40 yards and 3 catches for 23 yards.

Bengals: Top draft pick John Ross was held out of a second straight preseason game as he recovers from shoulder surgery. He was cleared to fully practice on Monday. … Second-round pick Joe Mixon carried five times for 13 yards.

INJURIES

Chiefs: TE Travis Kelce missed the preseason opener with a sore knee but practiced during the week and had one catch for 26 yards. S Eric Berry was sidelined again with a heel injury.

Bengals: S Shawn Williams hurt his right elbow in the second quarter and was taken off the field on a cart. … RB Giovani Bernard sat out a second straight preseason game as he recovers from a torn ACL.

TAKE THAT

Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict leveled RB Anthony Sherman with a high hit to the chest on a passing play in the first quarter.

STILL KICKING

Chiefs kicker Cairo Santos was out again with a groin injury. Sam Ficken, signed to fill in while he heals, made a 23-yard field goal, but was wide right on one of his extra-point attempts.

Kluber leaves start early as Indians romp past Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Corey Kluber put together another Cy Young-worthy performance before leaving with a sprained right ankle Friday night, and Jay Bruce homered twice to help the Cleveland Indians rout the Kansas City Royals 10-1 in the opener of their three-game series.

Kluber (12-3) was cruising along until there was one out in the sixth inning, and Eric Hosmer sent a grounder to the right side of the infield. Kluber winced coming off the mound to cover the bag.

The two-time All-Star faced one more batter before Andrew Miller relieved him. Kluber allowed a homer to Brandon Moss along with five more hits, striking out four and walking one.

Jason Kipnis and Bruce took Ian Kennedy (4-9) deep in the first inning, and Bruce added a three-run shot in the seventh to finish with five RBIs.

Edwin Encarnacion hit the Indians’ fourth homer of the night leading off the ninth.

Iheme ready to take over running back load

One position that will have a bit of a new look for the Fort Hays State football team this fall is running back. The Tigers are looking to replace First Team All-MIAA selection Shaquille Cooper who rushed for nearly 1,000 yards last season. Kenneth Iheme missed all of 2015 due to injury but returned to play in all 12 games a year ago and was named Third Team all-conference after rushing for over 500 yards and have nearly 200 receiving yards. The Wichita Heights senior says hes poised for another big year this season.

Kenneth Iheme

Iheme and Charles Tigner, who played mostly wide receiver a year ago, are expected to carry most of the running back duties in 2017.

Alex Gordon’s go-ahead single in 9th lifts Royals past A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Alex Gordon hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth after Oakland tied it in the bottom of the eighth, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Athletics 7-6 on Wednesday.

Alcides Escobar doubled to start the ninth against Blake Treinen (1-1), matching his season high with three hits. Then Gordon delivered his second run-scoring single of the series finale.

Oakland’s Matt Chapman hit a tying two-run homer in the eighth against Brandon Maurer (1-1), who wound up the winner.

Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Danny Duffy struck out eight over five innings but the Royals couldn’t hold a late lead again before holding on — a day after squandering a four-run advantage in a 10-8 defeat.

Cain added a key RBI single in the eighth for the Royals, who began the day tied with Minnesota six games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland.

Joyce’s 3-run double rallies A’s past Royals

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Matt Joyce hit a three-run double to cap a six-run eighth inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied past the Kansas City Royals 10-8 on Tuesday night.

Joyce also homered and had four RBIs. Khris Davis added his 33rd home run and Matt Olson hit his fourth in five days to help the A’s clinch at least a tie for the season series between the former division rivals.

The Royals hit three home runs in the top of the eighth, including Mike Moustakas’ 35th, to take a four-run lead before Oakland stormed back against relievers Joakim Soria and Mike Minor (5-5).

Ryon Healy and Olson hit RBI singles off Soria. Matt Chapman and Chad Pinder struck out swinging, and pinch-hitter Rajai Davis was intentionally walked to load the bases before Joyce lined a 1-0 pitch from Minor off the left-field wall.

The loss prevented the Royals from moving past the Angels in the race for the second AL wild card.
