Bundy pitches eight strong innings as Orioles beat Royals

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dylan Bundy allowed three hits over a career-high eight innings, newcomer Tim Beckham had two hits and scored twice and the resurgent Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory.

Seth Smith drove in three runs to help the Orioles move within two games of .500 (52-54) for the first time since July 3.

Kansas City will seek to avoid a three-game sweep on Wednesday. The Royals came to town having won 10 of 11, but they’ve only scored three runs in these two games at Camden Yards.

Bundy (10-8) struck out five and walked one. The right-hander had not pitched more than seven innings in any of his previous 34 major league starts.

All three hits Bundy allowed were singles — none after the third inning — and he retired the final 13 batters he faced. The only run he allowed was unearned.

K-State coach Weber agrees to 2-year contract extension

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber agreed a two-year contract extension Tuesday that could keep him with the Wildcats through the 2020-21 season.

It was the first major personnel decision made by new athletic director Gene Taylor.

Weber had two years left on an extension he signed in April 2013, and the terms of those two years remain unchanged. That means he is due $2.15 million this season and $2.25 million next season, and the two extension years will pay him $2.35 million and $2.45 million.

The final two years of the agreement now include a reduced buyout provision.

Weber was on the hot seat last season before leading the Wildcats to 21 wins and a win over Wake Forest in a First Four game in the NCAA Tournament. Kansas State lost to Cincinnati in the next round.

Tigers picked fifth in MIAA Football Preseason Polls

FHSU Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State was tabbed fifth in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls on Tuesday (Aug. 1), released during the annual MIAA Football Media Day. Once again, the event was held Children’s Mercy Park, home of Sporting Kansas City and the Division II National Championship Football Game.

Fort Hays State finished in a three-way tie for fourth in the MIAA standings last year alongside Pittsburg State and Washburn, so both the Coaches and Media Polls reflect the final standings from the regular season last year. However, Pittsburg State was the only of school of the three that did not participate in a postseason game last year.

From left, Jacob Mezera, Coach Chris Brown and Doyin Jibowu.

Fort Hays State won the Heart of Texas Bowl, 45-12, over Eastern New Mexico for the program’s first-ever postseason game win, while Washburn fell in the Mineral Water Bowl to Bemidji State 36-23. Fort Hays State has now enjoyed an 8-4 record each of the past two seasons, making bowl appearances both years and tying the program record for wins in a season. The Tigers continue to eye their first trip back to the NCAA Playoffs since the 1995 season on the cusp for two straight years, but may need a record-setting season of wins to do so in the perennially tough MIAA.

Quarterback Jacob Mezera, Bandit back Doyin Jibowu and Coach Chris Brown

Offensively, the Tigers return starting quarterback Jacob Mezera who enters his junior season. Mezera threw for 2,541 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, while breaking the school record for completion percentage with a 63 percent success rate. Senior Kenneth Iheme returns to the backfield, finishing last year with 526 yards on the ground and 176 yards receiving. Sophomore Charles Tigner also poses a strong threat with the ball in his hands after 453 receiving and 178 rushing yards in 2016. Layne Bieberle emerged as a strong deep threat through the air last year, finishing with a team-best 506 receiving yards. Mezera, Iheme, and Bieberle gained All-MIAA honors last year.

The Tigers were sound defensively last year, ranking second in the MIAA in points allowed per game (21.3) and total yards allowed per game (363.6). Only national champion Northwest Missouri State was better in both categories. Leading the defensive side of the ball are All-MIAA selections Nathan Shepherd and Jose Delgado. Shepherd was also tabbed with All-America honors by one organization and has been a presence on the interior of the defensive line for two years. He finished 2016 with 61 tackles, including 9.5 for loss, and three sacks. Delgado is the top returning tackler patrolling at linebacker, finishing with 114 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 1 interception. Doyin Jibowu is also a steadying presence at the bandit position, averaging nearly 80 tackles per season in his first two years on the field while starting all 24 contests in that span. Jibowu earned an All-MIAA nod his redshirt-freshman season.

Both the Coaches and Media Polls were consistent in the first six teams referenced in the poll. Two-time defending national champion Northwest Missouri State was picked No. 1 in both polls for the fifth consecutive year. In 2013, that run started when the Bearcats shared the No. 1 pick in the Coaches Poll with Missouri Western and held received the No. 1 pick in the Media Poll. Pittsburg State was the last to be picked alone in the No. 1 spot before the current five-year run by NWMSU, receiving that distinction in both polls in 2012. Northwest Missouri State, Emporia State, and Central Missouri all made the NCAA Playoffs last year. Emporia State’s two losses last year were to Northwest Missouri State (regular season and playoffs).

Fort Hays State opens up the 2017 season on Thursday, August 31 at Missouri Southern in Joplin. The first home game of the year is slated for Thursday, September 7 against Central Missouri.

Below are the 2017 MIAA Preseason Polls.

Gentry hits game-winner as Orioles beat Royals

BALTIMORE (AP) — Rather than dismantle the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline, Dan Duquette worked diligently to improve the club.

Appreciative of his confidence, the Orioles backed up his effort with a rousing 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Craig Gentry singled home the winning run in the ninth inning, and closer Zach Britton — who was rumored headed out of town hours earlier — got three outs to earn the win.

Baltimore started the day with a 50-54 record, but Duquette, the team’s executive vice president of baseball operations, believes the team can be a contender. He beat the non-waiver trade deadline by obtaining infielder Tim Beckham from Tampa Bay, three days after snagging right-hander Jeremy Hellickson from Philadelphia.

“We still have some hope that we can make the playoffs,” Duquette said, hours before the Orioles extended their modest winning streak to three games.

Caleb Joseph got Baltimore going in the ninth with a one-out single off Joakim Soria (4-3). Ruben Tejada singled with two outs before Gentry hit a grounder up the middle that sent Joseph home from second base without a throw.

“We feel good about ourselves,” Joseph said. “Maybe some of the fans have left, but we still believe in ourselves, 100 percent.”

By keeping Britton (1-0), who has converted an AL-record 57 straight saves, Duquette showed his faith in this team.

“I’ve played with Zach since ’09, so even the thought of not playing with him is not fun,” Joseph said.

Knowing he was going to be sticking around with the only team he’s ever been a part of, Britton walked to the mound in the ninth with a clear head.

“You get some things off your mind that shouldn’t be there and just focus on pitching,” the lefty said.

It was the second loss in 12 games for the Royals, who managed only five hits off three Baltimore pitchers.

The first seven innings featured a pitching duel between Kansas City’s Danny Duffy and Ubaldo Jimenez, both of whom allowed one run and struck out six.

“I just grinded through that outing,” Duffy said. “I felt like I had really good stuff but I didn’t pitch very well. That was the least impressive seven-inning, one-run outing I’ve ever had.”

Jimenez came in with a 6.93 ERA, but on this night he was exceptionally sharp.

‘If he’s not on, we get him,” manager Ned Yost said. “We couldn’t get him. Couldn’t do much against him.”

Kansas City used first-inning doubles by Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer to jump to a 1-0 lead.

Jimenez settled down after that, and Baltimore pulled even in the fifth when Manny Machado doubled and scored on a two-out single by Jonathan Schoop .

Though quiet on the final day of the trade deadline, the Royals welcomed back Melky Cabrera, who made his 2017 debut with Kansas City after being acquired from the White Sox on Sunday.

Playing right field and batting third, Cabrera went 0 for 4.

HOLE IN ONE

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis was charged with an error when he failed to handle a throw in the ninth inning from Machado at third. Turns out, the ball went right through the faulty webbing of Davis’ glove. He immediately got a new glove.

HAPPY HOMECOMING

Cabrera said he’s “really happy” to return to the pennant-contending Royals, whom he played for in 2011. “What I love to do is play postseason baseball,” the 13-year veteran said through an interpreter. Yost said Cabrera, a switch-hitter, “brings a great personality to a locker room filed with great personalities. He’s going to mesh perfectly with our group.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Yost is optimistic third-baseman Cheslor Cuthbert (wrist) can return to his rehab assignment sometime this week after fouling a ball off his foot.

Orioles: DH Mark Trumbo was placed on the 10-day disabled list with an oblique injury. He played in Baltimore’s first 103 games before sitting on Sunday. … SS J.J. Hardy (wrist) was transferred to the 60-day DL.

UP NEXT

Royals: Ian Kennedy (4-6, 4.43 ERA) seeks his fifth straight victory in the second game of the series Tuesday night.

Orioles: Dylan Bundy (9-8, 4.53 ERA) can match his win total of last season with a victory.

Gordon’s triple caps Royals’ rally in 5-3 win over Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) – Alex Gordon’s two-run triple capped a four-run eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, a day after their season-high, nine-game winning streak was snapped.

Alcides Escobar added a two-run single in the eighth and drove in three runs for the Royals, who lost in extra innings on Saturday after taking the series opener.

Rookie Rafael Devers hit a solo homer for Boston and starter Drew Pomeranz gave up one run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in his 100th career start.

Jason Hammel (5-8) allowed three runs on seven hits to end a six-start winless streak. His last victory also came against the Red Sox, at home on June 19.

Tyler Starks worked a perfect ninth in the non-save situation to close the game.

Ke’one Givens, Colin Simpson, Clayton Rasbeary and Jace Selser all had two of the Larks 12 hits.

Rasbeary’s inside the park home run to lead off the fourth gave the Larks the lead for good. Givens had a seventh inning triple which scored Selsor to make it 2-0. All four of their runs in the eighth came with two outs. Jacob Boston’s single, a double by Selsor, a triple from Trey Ochoa and single from Givens all knocked in runs.

The Larks will now play in the 7 pm feature game Tuesday against the Cheney Diamond Dawgs. The First Week qualifier rallied from an 8-2 deficit to beat the Seattle Studs 9-8.

Royals get OF Cabrera from White Sox for 2 minor leaguers

BOSTON (AP) – Looking to bolster their offense for a run for a playoff spot, the Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday for two minor-league pitchers.

The Royals entered the day three games behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians. Kansas City holds the second wild-card spot by 2 1/2 games over Tampa Bay.

The Royals had their season-high nine-game winning streak snapped by Boston on Saturday night – 9-8 in 10 innings.

The 32-year-old Cabrera was batting .288 with 13 homers and 56 RBIs for the White Sox. He’s also is tied for the majors’ lead with nine outfield assists.

In his 13th season in the majors, Cabrera, who also with the Royals in 2011, is a switch hitter. He’s second amongst active switch hitters with a .286 career average.

Kansas City sent a pair of Single-A pitchers in the deal: 22-year-old right-hander A.J. Puckett and 23-year-old left-hander Andre Davis. The White Sox also sent Kansas City cash considerations in the deal.

Puckett was the club’s second-round selection in 2016 and Davis was picked in the eighth round in 2015.

Leon helps Red Sox win in 10, end Royals’ 9-game streak

BOSTON (AP) — Sandy Leon slid into home plate and avoided catcher Drew Butera’s tag on Eduardo Nunez’s ground out in the 10th inning Saturday night, lifting the Boston Red Sox past Kansas City 9-8 to end the Royals’ nine-game winning streak.

Nunez also hit two solo homers over the Green Monster for the Red Sox. He’s 5 for 9 in two games since being acquired from San Francisco earlier in the week.

Matt Barnes (6-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Boston tied it on Betts’ sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Late safety lifts West to Shrine Bowl victory

Courtesy kpreps.com

EL DORADO, Kan. – Just when it seemed like the East All-Stars had done just enough to capture a third consecutive win in the Kansas Shrine Bowl, the West found a way.

The West All-Stars claimed a dramatic 22-21 victory when Zach Helbing (Mulvane) and Tanner Orand (Goddard-Eisenhower) combined to tackle East QB Brandon Mlekus (Frontenac) in the end zone for a safety. Mlekus scrambled to get out of the end zone after trying to recover from an errant snap.

The victory gives the West a 27-16-1 all-time advantage in the series.

On a night headlined by turnovers and sloppy play, the East had multiple opportunities to make a 21-20 lead stand up.

The East was handed a golden opportunity to extend its one-point lead in the fourth quarter when the West mishandled a punt giving the East a first-and-goal. But a 15-yard chop-block penalty moved the East back, and eventually a fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

The West took over with less than three minutes to go, trailing 21-20, and without a timeout.

On their first play, West QB Jacob Murray (Great Bend) heaved a long pass downfield that looked to be intercepted by Emporia’s Bryce Crouch, but Crouch couldn’t hold on for his second interception of the game. The next play, Murray hit Kaden Davis (Ellsworth) on a long catch-and-run to the East 30.

The West appeared to be poised to get even closer. Murray hit Dylan Foos (Dighton) on a short pass with room to run, but he was stripped by Nick Bulleigh (St. Thomas Aquinas) and the East recovered essentially sealing the game.

Or so we thought.

The East was called for two unsportsmanlike penalties after the play, moving the ball back half-the-distance, twice, inside their own 5-yard line and setting up the decisive defensive play.

The West almost forced a safety on the first snap, but the East was ruled to have advanced the ball just over the goaline and inside the 1-yard line. On second play, the snap sailed wide left of Mlekus.

Trailing by a touchdown at halftime, the East scored on their first offensive play of the third quarter as J.J. Letcher (KC Piper) raced 73 yards untouched on a jet sweep to tie the game at 14.

The East took a 21-14 lead later on a Mlekus touchdown run. But the West responded shortly after as Zach Esau (Hesston) hit Foos on a short touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed leaving the East lead at one point.

The West seemingly dominated a turnover-plagued first half until the final minute when Dalton Cowan (Topeka Seaman) hit Cuttar Huss (Troy) on an 18-yard touchdown pass to pull within 14-7. The two teams combined for seven first-half turnovers (5 for the West).

The West built a 14-0 lead on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Murray to Davis, and a 1-yard run by Esau.

The MVPs of the 44th annual Shrine Bowl were Lechter from the East and Helbing from the West.

Hays Monarchs beat Iola to advance to AA Legion championship game

Gavin Schumacher drove in three runs and Ryan Ruder tossed six solid innings as the Hays Monarchs beat Iola 7-4 Saturday to advance to the AA State American Legion Championship game.

The Monarchs took an early lead, in the second inning, on a two-run single by Eston Brown. Hays added two more runs on an error by the shortstop taking a 4-0 lead through two.

Iola got a run back in the top of the third and with Hays leading 5-1 Iola scored three runs in the top of the fifth cut the score to 5-4.

Schumacher added a pair of insurance runs in the Monarchs half of the sixth giving Hays a 7-4 lead and they would go on to win by that score.

Ryan Post

Schumacher, for the second game in-a-row drove in three runs and Eston Brown finished 1-for-3 with two RBI’s.

Ryan Ruder earned the win for the Monarchs. He allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits and struck out 12 over six innings.

The Monarchs are 23-10 on the summer and will play the winner of loser’s bracket at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
