Twins top Royals, move closer to AL Central title

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Randy Dobnak pitched 5 1/3 innings for his first major league win, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Friday night.

Minnesota won for the sixth time in eight games to maintain its four-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central. It reduced its magic number to clinch the division title to five with eight games to play.

Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run double for the Twins, and Miguel Sano had a run-scoring triple.

Kansas City has dropped seven of eight to fall to 56-99. It is one defeat away from its second consecutive 100-loss season and No. 6 in franchise history.

The Royals could give the majors four 100-loss teams in a single season for only the second time.

Dobnak (1-1) surrendered one run and three hits in his fourth start and eighth major league appearance overall. He has surrendered two earned runs in 10 1/3 innings over his past two outings.

Trevor May struck out the side in his second save of the season.

Eric Skoglund (0-2) gave up two runs and three hits in four innings for Kansas City.

Minnesota jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Nelson Cruz hit a sacrifice fly, and Sano tripled home Jorge Polanco.

Kansas City got one back on Alex Gordon’s RBI double in the sixth, but Gonzalez responded with his two-run double in the bottom half.

Hays take first win on the road in Liberal

Following at 0-2 start to the season at home the Hays High Indians took off for Liberal on Friday in search of their first road contest of the season.  Liberal entered the game at 2-0 with 69-0 and 55-18 victories under the belt.

Hays and Liberal played to a scoreless stalemate for the first 23:19 of the first half before the Indians broke the tie.  An eight play 86 yard play drive capped off by a 21 yard touchdown pass from Dylan Dreiling to Hayden Brown made the score 6-0.  The extra point failed with :41 left before the half.

The two defenses ruled the field in the first half.  Liberal twice drove in to the Hays red zone and once to the 22 yard line but was turned away twice on downs and once on a interception by Dawson VonFeldt.  The Liberal Redskin’s defense did not allow Hays inside the forty yard line before the Indian’s scoring drive at the end of the first half.

Highlights

Neither team moved the ball much in third quarter and Hays continued to lead 6-0 going to the fourth quarter.  The Indians drove down to the Liberal 13 yard line but could not score to take a two possession lead.  Liberal took over at their own fifteen following the Indian’s stall and put together their best drive of the night.  Liberal went 85 yards and tied the game at six points with 6:01 left in the fourth quarter.  Like Hays the Redskins missed the extra point.

Neither team was able to move the ball in the final six minutes leaving overtime to decide the fate of the game.

Hays moved down to the one yard in overtime on the first drive.  On fourth down and one the Indians were penalized five yards before the play.  Dylan Dreiling found a leaping Hayden Brown in the back left corner of the end zone for a touchdown.  The extra point from Gavin Meyers just snuck over the crossbar inside left upright for a 13-6 lead.

Liberal scored on just two plays by 210 pound Alex Esparza.  Esparza received the ball on the two point conversion for the win but was turned away by several of the Indian’s defense.

Coach Tony Crough

Hays moves to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Liberal drops to 2-1 and 0-1.

Hays returns to Hays next week for a homecoming date with 0-3 Garden City.  Hays has won 10 of their last 11 games against Liberal.

FHSU volleyball falls at No. 3 Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team came up empty against No. 3 Washburn Friday evening (Sept. 20), falling in three sets (18-25, 24-26, 16-25). The Tigers committed a season-low nine attack errors in the loss, but it was not enough to overcome 49 kills and a .259 attack rate from the Ichabods. The Tigers move to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play while the Ichabods are now 9-0 on the year and 1-0 in league action.

After dropping the first set, Fort Hays State led for nearly all of the second frame. The Tigers scored the first two points of the match and soon doubled up the Ichabods, 12-6, after a five-point run with Tatum Bartels serving. Washburn later closed within one, but three-straight kills from Mykah Eshbaugh pushed the FHSU advantage back to four, 19-15. The Ichabods continued to chip away at the lead, finally tying things up at 23-23. A kill from Bartels gave the Tigers a chance at set point, but WU rallied to score the final three points and take the set.

The freshman trio of Delaney Humm, Morgan Christiansen and Mykah Eshbaugh had a strong day on offense, combining for 21 kills and just three errors. Katie Darnell handled the setting duties, tossing up 20 assists while adding three kills and eight digs. Senior Abbie Hayes paced the team with 14 digs and tallied the fifth kill of her career.

Washburn posted four more attack errors than FHSU, but a sizeable 49-32 advantage in kills made the biggest difference in the match. The Ichabods also held a big lead in digs, 65-54, assists, 43-25, and aces, 7-2.

The Tigers return to Hays Saturday (Sept. 21) when they host Emporia State. First serve is set for 5 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Hornet offense overpowers FHSU women’s soccer

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team could not overcome Emporia State’s offense, falling to the Hornets 4-2 in a non-conference match Friday (Sept. 20). The Tigers move to 2-2 on the year, while ESU is now 4-1 this season.

Fort Hays State got on the board early in the first half when senior Nikita Woods put one in the back of the net at the 10-minute mark. Emporia State’s Gaby Crowell tallied the equalizer 10 minutes later before the teams went into the locker room tied 1-1.

Each side picked up the pace to start the second half until Crowell broke the tie with her second goal of the match in the 67th minute. The Hornets doubled their lead 12 minutes later with a goal from Joanie Westcoat.

Taryn Schnell got the Tigers back within one when she found the back of the net two minutes later, but ESU’s Hannah Woolery sealed the 4-2 victory with a goal in the 85th minute.

Emporia State held a 17-11 edge in shots, including 11 shots after halftime. The Hornets took four corners in the second half.

Deonna Wellbrock (1-1) made five saves after facing nine shots on goal. Woods, Cailey Perkins and Tessa Irvine all attempted two shots for the Tigers.

The road trip continues for Tigers on Sunday when they take on Nebraska-Kearney in another non-conference matchup. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.

Chiefs down 3 starters on offense for showdown vs Ravens

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs will be missing three starters from their prolific offense, including running back Damien Williams, when the Baltimore Ravens visit Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.

Williams was ruled out Friday after bruising his knee in last week’s win in Oakland, joining left tackle Eric Fisher and wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the bench for a matchup of 2-0 teams.

Fisher had surgery this week on a groin injury he sustained in practice late last week. Hill is still recovering from injuries to his sternum and collarbone that he sustained in Week 1.

Running back LeSean McCoy is questionable after missing practice Wednesday with an ankle injury. He practiced on a limited basis Thursday and was a full participant for Friday’s light workout.

Cruz hits 2 homers in Twins win over Royals

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Nelson Cruz hit two of Minnesota’s four home runs and matched his season high with five RBIs, igniting another impressive power display by the first-place Twins during an 8-5 victory on Thursday night over the Kansas City Royals to keep their American League Central lead at four games – with nine games to go.

Miguel Sano homered and hit the tiebreaking RBI double in the fifth following the ejection of Royals starter Mike Montgomery, who started that inning by giving up a home run to Mitch Garver. The Twins have 293 homers, one more than New York in the chase for the major league record set last season by the Yankees with 267.

Far more importantly in the pennant race, the Twins trimmed their magic number for clinching the division to six, meaning any combination of their wins and Cleveland losses would give them the title. The Indians completed a three-game sweep of Detroit on Thursday.

Sano, who reached the third deck above left field for the second time in three games, has 31 home runs, as does Garver. Cruz pushed his team lead to 39 homers with a two-run shot in the seventh that landed halfway up the wall of junipers that make up the batter’s eye behind center field. Cruz now has 399 career home runs, tied for 57th place on the all-time list with Andres Galarraga and Al Kaline.

Cruz, who has played in just 113 games due to two stints on the injured list for a strained left wrist, joined Eddie Rosario above the 100-RBI mark. The Twins also set their single-season club record with 885 runs and counting.

The home run derby helped struggling Twins starter Kyle Gibson out. He walked in back-to-back runs in the second inning before being removed with a 3-0 deficit. Dealing all year with ulcerative colitis, a digestive track disease, Gibson has faltered down the stretch, bad timing with the absence of Michael Pineda after his suspension for a banned diuretic.

Lewis Thorpe (4-2), the second of six relievers, worked four innings for the win. Taylor Rogers recorded his 28 saves with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.

THE FOUL MONTY

Montgomery allowed seven hits and five runs in four innings. During a visit to the mound by pitching coach Cal Eldred after Garver’s home run, home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez came out to urge them to wrap it up. Montgomery had words for Gonzalez, who warned the left-hander before giving him the heave-ho after Montgomery kept jawing at him. He chucked the ball toward the plate on his walk off the mound and slammed his glove against the bench upon reaching the dugout.

Jacob Barnes (1-3) relieved him and gave up the double to Sano that center fielder Erick Mejia nearly caught after a long run but had pop out of his glove.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins RF Max Kepler (left shoulder soreness) was rested for the fifth straight game and the eighth time in the last 10 games.

UP NEXT

Royals: LHP Eric Skoglund (0-1, 8.36 ERA), who has taken the place of RHP Jakob Junis in the rotation, will pitch on Friday night for his first start since Aug. 30. Junis was shut down at 175 1/3 innings as a precaution due to his season workload. Skoglund pitched four innings in relief on Sunday.

Twins: Manager Rocco Baldelli declined before the game to declare his starter for the second game of the series, but rookie RHP Devin Smeltzer remained a strong possibility for the opening created by Pineda’s suspension. Smeltzer pitched three scoreless innings on Saturday.

Agudelo scores twice to lead FHSU men’s soccer past Northeatsern State in overtime

HAYS, Kan. – In their first match in Great American Conference play, the Fort Hays State University men’s soccer program: ended a three-game losing streak, defeated rival Northeastern State University, and extended their run of victories in Hays to eighteen consecutive matches at the conclusion of their 2-1 win in overtime.

With just under six minutes left to play in the extra period, senior midfielder Sergio Villalba sent a ball down the sideline, just sliding around the defender in pursuit. Santiago Agudelo sprinted in behind the RiverHawks defense. Using shear pace and poise, the reigning National Player of the Year dribbled to the edge of the 18-yard box.

Behind the entirety of the Northeastern State outfield players, Agudelo only had one man to beat. Goalkeeper Justin Hinman jumped off his line and into action. The senior forward took one side step and slotted the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the night to secure a Tigers victory.

Agudelo’s first goal came in the 19th minute. Forward Arsenio Chamorro controlled the ball off of a header won by Agudelo within the Tigers’ attacking third. He played a ground ball to midfielder Rogelio Lopez who played with a bit of skill and side stepped his defender. Lopez crossed the ball and found Agudelo at the far post and slotted the ball to the keeper’s right.

Before FHSU scored, the RiverHawks saw a screaming strike by Aaron Ugbah be goal-bound. Stepping into a swing, Ugbah drilled a ball into the top corner of the net on a near 25-yard strike.

For Fort Hays, this marks their second victory of the 2019 campaign and their fourth consecutive victory over the RiverHawks.

Seven players played all 94 minutes on Thursday night for the black and gold. Senior goalkeeper Cullen Fisch added two saves on 11 shots in the victory.

The Tigers will remain at home on Saturday, Sept. 21 and take on No. 15 Rogers State for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The only time that the two sides have faced off was in 2017 in Claremore, Okla. which resulted in 1-0 defeat for FHSU.

FHSU Athletics

With all the bids tallied and tickets totaled, the 10th annual Tiger Auction and Dinner was another record-setting event for FHSU Athletics. Following the sale of 93 live items and 239 silent items, alongside dinner and raffle tickets, the FHSU Athletic Department raised a net total of $377,402, eclipsing 2018’s record total of $343,000. The last two auctions have benefitted greatly from a pair of $100,000 matching gifts towards Live Auction Item #40. Patty Baconrind provided the match in 2018 while Stephen Tebo provided the match this year.

Total dollars generated was not the only record set, however, as 668 supporters were in attendance, 80 more than the previous high set last year. The Auction and Dinner was held inside the Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility for a third time in 2019, allowing for more attendees and more space for viewing items.

Funds from this year’s Live Auction Item #40 will address improvements to numerous athletics facilities. The list includes new basketball goals inside Gross Memorial Coliseum, an expansion of the wrestling practice room, a new wrestling mat, NFL style goalposts (uprights) at Lewis Field, upgraded speakers and a new scoreboard at Tiger Stadium (softball), backstop netting and new batting cages at Larks Park (baseball) and acoustical upgrades to two of the auxiliary gyms in Cunningham Hall. Donations for Item #40 are accepted throughout the year. They are 100% tax deductible and can be paid in installments through the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020. Individuals or businesses interested in donating can contact the athletics office at (785) 628-4050 to set up a gift.

Stephen Tebo provided a generous matching gift of $100,000 toward Live Auction Item #40, while the Fleharty family donated $19,000 towards the new scoreboard at Tiger Stadium. Attendees at the auction contributed $114,000 towards Item #40.

“The success of this year’s record breaking Tiger Auction and Dinner could not have happened without the hard work and dedication from our auction committee, everyone who donated an item, everyone who attended, and our corporate sponsor Eagle,” said assistant athletic director Matt Cook.

The annual event has seen more than 5,000 attendees and raised over $2 million for Tiger Athletics over the last 10 years, with generous individuals and businesses in the Hays community donating nearly 3,000 items.

Fans can mark their calendars for the 11th annual Tiger Auction and Dinner, scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2020 in the Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility. Information regarding next year’s event will be released in the spring of 2020.

A’s edge KC

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Mark Canha knew it was just a matter of time before the right pitch would come. He waited, and his patience paid off.

Canha hit an RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning and the Oakland Athletics edged the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Wednesday to hold their lead atop the AL wild-card race.

The Athletics, who have won seven of eight, began the day two games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild-card spot. Cleveland was a half-game behind the Rays.

Canha was sitting on a hard sinker down and away that he’d seen Royals reliever Jesse Hahn use effectively.

“I was expecting it early,” Canha said. “He mixed in a couple of sliders and I finally got the pitch I was looking for.”

Canha connected on the fifth pitch of the at-bat, driving a 1-2 sinker down the right field line.

The A’s gave away Mark Canha T-shirts that he saw fans waving in the outfield during the game.

“It was a fun day,” Canha said. “I couldn’t have written a better story myself.”

Starters Homer Bailey of the A’s and Danny Duffy of the Royals each pitched seven sharp innings. Bailey, who was traded from Kansas City to Oakland in July, allowed three hits and struck out 11 while Duffy gave up two hits and fanned six.

“Both starters were extremely good,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Homer was much more consistent with his split, now. He just doesn’t miss against lefties. Just unbelievable. His curve was good, and he spotted his fastball extremely well. I didn’t see him miss a location all day long and it was the same with Danny. I thought this was one of Danny’s better games that he’s pitched all year long.”

Jurickson Profar drew a leadoff walk from Hahn (0-1) in the 11th and stole second. After striking out Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman, Hahn intentionally walked Matt Olson to face Canha.

J.B. Wendelken (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. He struck out Jorge Soler with the bases loaded and two outs in the 11th.

Bailey is 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA over his last seven starts. The Royals struck out 19 times and are three defeats away from reaching the 100-loss plateau with nine games left.

“The finish line’s in site,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “You can talk about games leading up, you can talk about series earlier in the season, but teams play differently now and each game’s more important and guys step up. It’s a different animal right now.”

FANCY FIELDING

A’s left fielder Chad Pinder saved at least a run with a diving catch on a flare off Ryan O’Hearn’s bat with runners at first and second with two outs in the seventh to keep the game scoreless.

Soler doubled off Bailey with one out and would have scored easily. Alex Gordon, who was issued an intentional walk ahead of O’Hearn’s at bat, likely would have scored, too.

MORE FANCY FIELDING

Royals left fielder Gordon crashed into the wall making a running catch to rob Canha of extra bases with one out in the seventh.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: RHP Jakob Junis has been shut down for the remainder of the season due to concerns about his workload, manager Ned Yost said. Junis has pitched 175 1/3 innings in 31 starts. . LHP Eric Skoglund will take Junis’ spot in the rotation.

Athletics: RHP Mike Fiers, who experienced nerve irritation in his right arm in his last start, will take his regular turn in the rotation on Friday, when Oakland opens a three-game series against Texas. Fiers lasted just 1 2/3 innings on Sept. 14 against the Rangers in Arlington. He has experienced the injury intermittently over the past two seasons. Fiers had MRI earlier this week and was cleared after throwing a bullpen session without issues, manager Bob Melvin said. “We’ll continue to monitor him, but this has kind of popped up for before, hasn’t been an issue for him later on,” Melvin said. “He’s pretty routine-oriented, so we’ll keep him on schedule.” . RHP Blake Treinen will be shut down for at least two weeks with a back injury. RHP Chris Bassitt will move from the rotation to the bullpen, replacing Treinen.

UP NEXT

Royals: LHP Mike Montgomery (3-9, 4.70 ERA) will pitch Thursday’s series opener against Minnesota. He’s 0-4 with a 4.85 over his last five starts (14 earned runs, 26 innings).

Athletics: Fiers (14-4, 4.09 ERA) will pitch Friday’s series opener against the Texas Rangers. Oakland’s most reliable starter for most of the season has given up 12 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings over his last two starts and has an 18.78 ERA in three September starts (16 earned runs, 7.2 innings pitched).
