The Larks are on the road this weekend for three in Haysville. The Aviators have lost seven straight and 22 of their last 23.

Mike Moustakas, Justin Turner elected to All-Star teams

NEW YORK (AP) – Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner and Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas have been elected to the All-Star Game in online voting for the final initial roster spots.

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was second in the NL vote, leaving Cubs reliever Wade Davis as the sole representative of the World Series champions at Tuesday’s game in Miami. Davis did not join the Cubs until the offseason, after Chicago’s first World Series title since 1908.

The last World Series champion with one All-Star was in 2007, when Albert Pujols was the only player from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Turner received a record 20.8 million votes, topping Freddie Freeman’s 19.7 million in 2013, the commissioner’s office said Thursday. Moustakas, who also won the final spot vote in 2015, received 15.6 million ballots.

Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon was third, followed by Colorado first baseman Mark Reynolds and Miami first baseman Justin Bour, who will compete in Monday’s Home Run Derby.

Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts was second in the AL vote, followed by the Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius, Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus and Tampa Bay first baseman Logan Morrison.

Additional All-Stars will be picked for injured players.

Chiefs sign veteran linebacker Josh Mauga to contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs signed veteran linebacker Josh Mauga, who missed all of last season with a hip injury, and former Seattle safety Steven Terrell on Thursday.

The Chiefs created roster space for him by waiving punter Will Monday.

Mauga started 30 games for the Chiefs in 2014 and ’15, but an offseason injury forced him onto the injured reserve list last August. Ramik Wilson wound up starting in his place.

His return gives the Chiefs someone familiar with the defense to work behind Derrick Johnson, the veteran stalwart who is coming off his own Achilles tendon injury. Johnson participated in some of Kansas City’s offseason program and expects to be ready for training camp.

Terrell appeared in 32 games for the Seahawks, starting five last season.

Perez homers in 10th to give Royals win over Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) – Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer in the 10th, Alex Gordon added a two-out RBI single later in the inning and the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep with a 9-6 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

Perez drove the second pitch from reliever James Pazos (2-2) out to right field for his 17th homer of the season. It was the third home run of the game for Kansas City, adding to earlier two-run shots by Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain.

Mike Minor (5-1) pitched the ninth to get the victory and Kelvin Herrera threw the 10th for his 19th save. Minor had a scare when Mike Zunino led off the ninth with a flyball to deep left field that Gordon caught one step in front of the wall.

Kansas City won for the sixth time in seven games and handed Seattle its seventh straight loss at home.

Larks split in Great Bend

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Hays Larks scored five runs in the fifth inning then added two more in the sixth as they rally for a 7-3 win in game two of their doubleheader in Great Bend and settle for a split with the Bat Cats Wednesday at Al Burns Field. The Bat Cats (14-15, 14-15 Jayhawk League) exploded for nine runs in the first three innings and won the opener 9-4.

Clayton Rasbeary tied the second game with a two-run double. Colin Simpson gave the Larks (19-9, 19-8 Jayhawk League) the lead with a sacrifice fly. Mikey Gangwish and Max Remy followed with runs scoring singles. Simpson added a two-run single an inning later.

Dylan Schneider (1-0) allowed two earned runs on six hits over four innings for the win. Chad Smith pitched three scoreless frames for his first save.

Trevor Boone hit a three-run homer in the Larks four-run sixth in game one. Jake Norton (1-2) allowed five runs on no hits with four walks in one inning and suffered the loss.

Despite the split, the Larks gain ground on Liberal in the Jayhawk League race after the Bee Jays were swept by Dodge City. Hays and the Athletics are now one-game out of first place with Derby a game and a half back.

The Larks close out the four-game set with the Bat Cats Thursday night. It’s Stand Up To Cancer Night. There will be a special ceremony in the top of the 7th inning to honor cancer survivors and people who have fallen to cancer and Larks payers will be wearing pink jerseys and a pink autographed bat and two pink Larks autographed baseballs will be raffled.

Hays Monarchs split in Dodge City

DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Hays Monarchs American Legion baseball team split their doubleheader in Dodge City Wednesday at Red Demon Field, dropping the first game 3-1 then coming back to take the second 8-01.

Chase Werth had three hits including two doubles and drove in two to lead the way in the nightcap. Gavin Schumacher, Creighton Renz and Cole Zimmerman all had two hits. Luke Ruder allowed one run on five hits over five innings for the win. Tate Garcia struck out for over the final two frames for the save.

Trent Mayo gave up three runs on two hits over four innings in the first game.

The Monarchs are now 13-8. They play at a tournament in McPherson this weekend.

Larks avoid third straight loss with win over Great Bend

HAYS, Kan. – The Hays Larks avoided their first three-game losing streak of the summer with a 5-2 win over Great Bend Tuesday night at Larks Park.

Mikey Gangwish hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to break open a one-run game then Tyler Starks worked out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out the side in the ninth for the save.

Starter Peyton Battenfield (3-1) allowed two runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and no walks over eight innings for the win.

The Larks scored their first two runs off of Bat Cat errors before Gangwish’s third homer of the season gave them some breathing room.

Parker Schkade loaded the bases in the ninth thanks to an error and two singles before Starks came in and nailed down his fifth save of the season.

Liberal beat Dodge City so the Larks stay two back of the Bee Jays in the Jayhawk League.

Hays (18-8, 18-7 Jayhawk League) travels to Great Bend for a doubleheader Wednesday night before the two close out the series at Larks Park Thursday.

Royals keep rolling with another win in Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) – Whit Merrifield hit the first pitch of the game from Felix Hernandez for his seventh home run, Mike Moustakas added his 24th homer of the season, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3 on Tuesday for their fifth win in six games.

Kansas City knocked around Hernandez (3-3) for five earned runs in six innings. Merrifield set the tone jumping on an 89 mph pitch in the middle of the plate and clearing the wall in left-center. The Royals scored three times in the fourth inning thanks to Moustakas’ two-run shot and a two-out error by second baseman Robinson Cano that allowed Brandon Moss to score. Salvador Perez had a two-run double and the five earned runs were the most allowed by Hernandez in his eight starts this season.

Kansas City starter Danny Duffy (5-4) returned after spending a month on the disabled list and allowed just two first-inning runs.
