Indians pound Royals to avoid 3-game series sweep

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Roberto Perez and Daniel Robertson helped the Indians batter Royals pitcher Eric Skoglund before a long rain delay washed out both starters, and Cleveland went on to beat Kansas City 8-0 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Perez and Robertson ripped two-run doubles off Skoglund (1-1) in the second inning before rain moved in during the bottom half. Lightning went off in the distance, and the tarp was pulled onto the field for 1 hour, 50 minutes.

When the game resumed, the Indians quickly tacked on runs to put it away.

Dan Otero (1-0) replaced Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer after the delay and allowed one hit over 2 1/3 innings to earn his first win since Sept. 22, when he also got the decision in relief against Kansas City.

Jason Kipnis homered and drove in two for the Indians. Robertson finished with three RBIs.

Chiefs release WR Maclin in midst of voluntary workouts

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, cutting ties with one of the most high-profile free-agent signings made by general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid.

The unexpected move Friday came after the Chiefs wrapped up the second week of voluntary workouts. Maclin had been a regular at the Chiefs’ practice facility this offseason, and he recently got married — with Reid and a number of his teammates in attendance.

Maclin was entering the third year of a $55 million, five-year contract with Kansas City. It was a deal that became especially costly when the Chiefs found guilty of tampering in their pursuit of him and were stripped of two draft picks and received a fine.

Broncos say Shaq Barrett is out several months with bad hip

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Broncos outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett will miss the rest of the team’s offseason program because of a hip injury sustained in a non-team workout last week.

Coach Vance Joseph tweeted that Barrett won’t need surgery but will be out “at least the next few months.”

Barrett missed OTAs this week to travel to Vail, Colorado, to see how severe his injury was. Joseph said doctors told the team Wednesday that the injury could be treated conservatively.

“It’s a tough break losing him for at least the next few months, but we’re still counting on him being a big part of our team in 2017,” Joseph said. “I have no doubt Shaq will work very hard during his rehab. We’re looking forward to getting him back on the field when he’s healthy.”

Barrett, an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2015, has seven sacks over the last two seasons. The Broncos were heavily counting on him to boost their pass rush following DeMarcus Ware’s retirement.

Barrett’s injury opens opportunities for free agent Kasim Edebali as well as Vontarrius Dora and undrafted free agents Deon Hollins of UCLA and Ken Ekanem of Virginia Tech.

UCM wins inaugural MIAA Commissioner’s Cup

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Missouri edged Pittsburg State by less than a tenth of a point to claim the inaugural MIAA Commissioner’s Cup. Central Oklahoma also finished in double digits to come in third as the teams were all divided by less than a point.

Central Missouri won all the All-Sports Trophies during the time they went by that name, but this is by far the closest the race has ever been.

“Winning the commissioner’s cup is attributed to our outstanding coaches and student-athletes across all sports,” Central Missouri Athletic Director Jerry Hughes said. “We’re proud of not only their accomplishments on the playing fields, but also in the classroom and how they represent the University of Central Missouri in the community.”

Missouri Southern finished in fourth place just five-tenths ahead of Northwest Missouri who rounded out the top five. Just three-tenths of a points divided six through eighth place as Fort Hays State came in sixth, Emporia State was seventh and Missouri Western placed eight.

In ninth place was Northeastern State with Lindenwood finishing behind them in ninth place. Nebraska-Kearney was just three-tenths of a point ahead of Southwest who was just two-tenths ahead of Washburn in the 11-12-13 spots. Lincoln finished in 14th despite winning one league championship and coming in as the league runner-up once.

“We are very excited that the Commissioner’s Cup has been brought back to help celebrate the outstanding achievement of MIAA student-athletes and coaches throughout the academic year,” MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy said. “It was a banner season for many MIAA programs at the regional and national levels and the close race we had in the conference standings to decide the commissioner’s Cup winner for 2016-17 highlights just how competitive the MIAA is right now.”

The trophy will be presented to UCM at the MIAA Awards Ceremony presented by Husch Blackwell on June 5 from the Kansas City Public Library – Plaza Branch.
