Skoglund wins big league debut, beats Verlander, Tigers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Eric Skoglund pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in his major league debut, helping the Kansas City Royals beat Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Skoglund, a 2014 third-round draft pick out of Central Florida, struck out five and walked one. The left-hander was promoted from Triple-A Omaha when the Royals placed Danny Duffy on the disabled list Monday with an oblique strain.

Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 14 opportunities.

Verlander (4-4) left after seven innings, allowing one run and six hits.

Lindenwood falls in pitchers duel at Division II Baseball Championships

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Lindenwood fell 5-2 to West Chester in a game that started out as a pitchers duel in the NCAA Division II Baseball National Tournament.

Lindenwood got on the board in the top of the first inning as Drew Quinones singled through the right side driving home Tyler Muehling. The Rams would answer in the bottom half of the inning but both teams would then be scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when West Chester plated four.
The Lions would cut into the lead as Rayce Singbush scored on a Paul Sherwood single in the top of the ninth, but would get no closer.

At the plate Wes Degener went two for five and Ryan Sosnowski was on base twice. On the mound Andrew Eilers pitched six innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out three in a no decision.

Lindenwood will face the winner of UC-San Diego and Quincy at 3 p.m. on May 31 from The Ballpark in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Tigers rally to beat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez each drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers came from behind to beat the Kansas City Royals 10-7 on Monday night.

The Tigers scored four runs in the eighth, highlighted by Cabrera’s two-run single. Cabrera, who reached base four times, walked with the bases loaded in a six-run Detroit fifth inning.

Joakim Soria (2-2), who is 0-for-3 in save situations, retired none of the five batters he faced in the eighth and four scored. He allowed three singles, walked two and allowed a run on a wild pitch.

Martinez hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Mike Minor to give the Tigers a 6-3 lead.

Whit Merrifield homered, tripled and doubled in his first three at-bats, but flied out to end the seventh. No Royal has hit for the cycle since Hall of Famer George Brett in 1990.

Francisco Rodriguez (2-5) was credited with the victory.

Royals LHP Duffy out 6-to-8 weeks with oblique strain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Royals have placed Danny Duffy on the disabled list with an oblique strain and say the left-hander is expected to be out six to eight weeks.

Duffy was injured Sunday while covering first base at Cleveland.

Royals manager Ned Yost said Monday: “He’s going to be out for a while.”

Duffy, who was the Royals’ opening day starter, is 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA in 11 starts. He allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks in four-plus innings in a 10-1 loss Sunday to the Indians.

Duffy says: “This stinks man. I’m very bummed out today. The boys are going to pick me up. I’ll be fresh and ready to go in six to eight (weeks). I’m going to try to come back sooner than that.”

The Royals purchased the contract of left-hander Eric Skoglund from Triple-A Omaha. He will make his major league debut Tuesday, starting against Detroit. Skoglund was 2-3 with a 4.53 ERA in eight Pacific Coast League starts.

BUNKER HILL – Smoky Hills Public Television will air the final home game of the regular season for the Dodge City Law indoor football team this week.

The game, played at United Wireless Arena, features the Dodge City Law against the Texas Revolution. The game will air on Smoky Hills Public Television Thursday, June 1 at 9:00 p.m.

Dodge City Law and Texas Revolution are both members of the Champions Indoor Football League. Dodge City enters the game leading the South Division.

Kipnis, Tomlin lead Indians past Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jason Kipnis went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, Josh Tomlin pitched his first complete game in two years and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 10-1 on Sunday.

Kipnis, who reached in each of his five plate appearances, hit an RBI single in the third and a solo homer in the seventh.

Austin Jackson drove in three runs for Cleveland, and Carlos Santana had three hits and two RBIs. Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez also had three hits apiece.

Tomlin (3-6) tossed a six-hitter for his first win since April 30.

Plainville boys clinch 2A State Track and Field title

The Plainville Cardinals boys track and field team placed in 15 events and brought home four titles over the weekend as they won the 2A State Track and Field Title at the Kansas State Track and Field Championship in Wichita.

Hayden Friend earned a pair of individual gold medals winning both the 2A boys 100 meters (11.10) and 200 meters (22.61).

Friend was also a member of the boys 4X100 meter relay that brought home the gold with a time of 3:28.64. Chase Cellmer, Ryan Buresh and Samuel Kaup were also member of that relay team.

The Ellis boys finished second in the 4X100 relay with a time of 43.99-seconds. The relay team is made up of; Trey Hudson, Joseph Eck, Logan Shaw and Auntonio Jones.

Zachary Pierson claimed the gold medal in the 2A boys shot put with a throw of 157-feet 08-inches.

Plainville finished with 88 team points and Smith Center was third with 67.

The Plainville girls finished 16th as a team and placed four in the top eight.

The Ellis girls were ninth as a team and had seven top eight finishers.

In Class 1A, Victoria finished ninth in the boys race. Collin Kisner win the 1A boys 400 meters with a time of 50.83. Kisner placed second in the 200 meter and third in the 100 meter.

The Victoria girls placed 13th. Kali Weber placed second in both the 1A girls 100 and 200 meters.

TMP girls place in five events; boys in one at State Track meet

The TMP-Marian girls track team had three individuals place in four events and one relay team place in the top eight at the weekend’s Kansas Track and Field meet in Wichita.

Julia Werth was the top finisher for the Monarchs finishing second in the 3A girls 800 meters. Werth finished with a time of 2:26.15.

The Monarchs girls 4X800 meter relay team also finished second with a time of 10:18.54. The team is made up of; Kiara Urban, Julia Werth, Alison Schibi and Emily Schippers.

Kendra Werth placed fifth in the 3A girls 300 meter hurdles (48.04-seconds) and seventh in the 100 meter hurdles (15.93).

In the 3A girls triple jump Paris Wolf placed seventh with a jump of 35-feet, 1.25-inches.

Savannah Yost also qualified for the State Track and Field meet finishing 14th in the 3A girls high jump.

The Monarch girls finished 11th.

The TMP boys had just one finisher in the top eight. Hayden Lowe finished in a tie for sixth in the 3A boys high jump. He cleared a height of 6-feet on his second attempt.

The Monarchs 4X800 meter relay finished 13th.

TMP boys finished 45th.

FHSU’s Cronin wins 800 meter title, Meyer All-American

BRADENTON, Fla. – Fort Hays State junior Decano Cronin won the National Championship in the 800m run Saturday afternoon (May 27) at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was one of two individuals to earn All-American status on Saturday.

Cronin becomes the first National Champion from Fort Hays State since Christa Bergmann won the indoor weight throw in 2011. He is the first male to win a national title since 2008 (Bryan Haynes, 200m dash) and the first outdoor male champion since 2001 (Zach Kindler, javelin).

Cronin won the race in a time of 1:49.75, just .01 seconds off his season-best time. The Cork, Ireland started in the middle of the track and fell to the back of the pack through the first lap, completing the first 400 meters in eighth place. As the field made the turn to the back straightaway, Cronin bolted to the outside, passing five runners to move into third with 200 meters to go. As the trio completed the final turn, Cronin jumped in front once and for all, holding on to win by .19 seconds.

Brett Meyer also earned All-American status after finishing seventh in the 800m run. Meyer was in the middle of the pack at the midway point before completing the race in 1:50.96. It was the second time Meyer earned All-American honors this season after finishing fifth in the indoor 800m run.

Alexcia Deutscher earned a 10th place finish in the javelin throw, finishing less than three feet from advancing to the finals. The freshman hurled the spear 145 feet, 10 inches on her second throw to move into seventh, but three individuals passed her on the final throw of the first round.

Kolt Newell finished 19th in the high jump after posting a height of 6 feet, 7 inches. The sophomore cleared the bar on his second attempt, but was one of five individuals that failed to clear the 6 foot, 9 inch bar.

The 800m duo produced 12 points in the team competition, giving the Tigers a 19th place finish overall.

Berens and Dale place at state track meet for Hays High

Hays High’s Shane Berens brought home a silver medal in the 4A boys shot put over the weekend at the Kansas State Track and Field Championship in Wichita.

Berens, on his fourth attempt, turned in his best effort with a throw of 56-feet 3.5-inches which was good enough second. He was just one inch behind the champion Micaiah Noel from KC Piper who recorded a throw of 56-feet 4.5-inches.

Berens also qualified in the 4A boys discus but committed four fouls and recorded just the ninth best throw.

The Hays boys 4X800 meter relay team also scored for the Indians. The team made up of Taivian Creamer, Zachary Hopp, Caden Cunningham and Ethan Shippy finished eighth.

Hopp finished 13th in the boys 3200 meter run.

The boys finished 24th as a team.

Jacey Dale was the lone Indian girl to place in the top eight. Dale finished in a tie for sixth clearing 5-feet on her second attempt.

Macey Steckel finished ninth in the 4A girls discus and Marie Reveles was 11th in the 4A girls 1600 meter run.

The Indian girls finished 42nd.

Escobar, Moustakas lead Royals past Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) — Alcides Escobar hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the sixth, Mike Moustakas homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2 on Saturday.

Kansas City, an AL-worst 20-27 entering Saturday, has won two straight this weekend against the Indians.

Jason Vargas (6-3) allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth for his second save in two days and No. 11 on the season.

Cleveland right-hander Danny Salazar (3-5) allowed four runs, three earned, in 5 1/3 innings.

TMP-Marian girls’ soccer comes up short in 4-1A title match

WICHITA, Kan. – TMP-Marian goalkeeper Deonna Wellbrock played inspired, saving several Bishop Miege shots. The only one to get by her proved to be the winner. The Stags scored with 2:22 to play in the first half and beat the Monarchs 1-0 in the 4-1A state title game Saturday afternoon at Friends University.

The Monarchs had several scoring chances denied in the second half as they end their season 14-5-1.

Lindenwood baseball shuts out Delta State at NCAA II Championships

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Lindenwood shut out Delta State 4-0 to earn a win in their first game at the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Lindenwood got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Kyle Teter singled to right field driving home Wes Degener. In the bottom of the second Paul Sherwood hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Sam Baxter after he tripled.

The Lions would grab two runs in the bottom of the third as Drew Quinones scored on a double-play and then Sam Baxter drove in a run on an RBI bunt single.

Quinones finished four for four and Kyle Teter was two for three as they each scored a run. On the mound Brendan Feldman pitched seven innings allowing just two hits and striking out four to pick up the win.

The Lions will take on West Chester in the second round in a game scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 29 from The Ballpark in Grand Prairie, Texas.
