WICHITA, Kan. – Kayla Vitztum scored the only goal of the match with a little over 35 minutes to play to lead the TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team to 1-0 win over Louisburg in the semifinals of the 4-1A State Tournament Friday night at Friends University.

The Monarchs (14-4-1) will face Bishop Miege (12-7-1) who upset Maize South 3-2 in the first semifinal.

Ellis falls in 2-1A state title game

GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Ellis Railroader baseball team was able to advance to the school’s first ever state championship game on Friday afternoon, defeating Chase County by a score of 5-4 in 9 innings.

Semifinals
The score was knotted at three for eight innings until Chase County’s Joel Jirak took a chance stealing home in the top of the 9th with no outs. The throw to home was in time and Ellis catcher Nathan Cox stretched out to tag Jirak at home plate but Jirak made a slippery move and avoided the tag, safely stealing home for a run. Ellis head coach Brent Cain argued the call saying that Jirak had left the base-path but the call would stand and Ellis would be down a run in the bottom of the 9th.

Junior Hernandez lead off the bottom of the 9th with a single, Dalton Hensley would be hit by a pitch and Easton Smith would hit a single to load the bases for Ellis in the bottom of the 9th with no outs. Brayden Bittel came up to bat and hit a soft ground ball to first base. Garrett Jackson, first baseman for Chase County had a tough decision to make with Junior Hernandez flying home from third and all runners advancing. Jackson elected to throw the ball home and the ball soared over the head of catcher Jacob Sharp. Hernandez scored safely and Hensley scored on the error, giving Ellis the victory in extra innings.

Championship Game
Ellis took on Leon-Bluestem in the championship game on Friday evening. It was a close game through the first three innings with Ellis taking a quick 5-1 lead.

The 4th, 5th, and 6th innings were disastrous for Ellis as a multitude of defensive errors resulted in Leon-Bluestem taking an 8-5 lead. Ellis could not get their bats going and were shut-out in the final four innings.

Ellis left 13 runners on base and scored five runs off 10 hits. Leon-Bluestem scored eight runs off seven hits and left seven on base. Eight of the nine Ellis starters are seniors.

Bonifacio’s hit caps Royals’ rally in win over Indians

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jorge Bonifacio’s two-run double off Andrew Miller broke an eighth-inning tie and lifted the Kansas City Royals past the Cleveland Indians 6-4 on Friday night.

The Royals entered the game with the lowest winning percentage in the AL, but rallied from an early 4-0 deficit.

Brandon Moss hit a three-run homer in the fourth and Mike Moustakas’ solo home run in the fifth tied the game.

Lorenzo Cain started the winning rally with a single off Bryan Shaw (1-1). Miller got Eric Hosmer to hit a ground ball, but shortstop Francisco Lindor booted a backhand attempt for his fourth error of the season.

Miller retired Salvador Perez on a foul out, but Bonifacio’s double to left-center scored both runners.

Easton Smith throws shutout; Ellis wins state tourney opener

GREAT BEND, Kan. – It was a dominating performance on the mound Thursday for the Ellis Railroader’s senior pitcher Easton Smith. Smith saw only seven batters in the first two innings, striking out six of the seven batters. Smith would end up striking out 14 batters while giving up only three hits and one walk in less than 100 pitches. Smith would go on to shutout the eight-seeded Wabaunsee Chargers in the first round of the 2-1A state baseball tournament.

In the bottom of the first inning, the first six Ellis batters got on base and the Railroaders were able to get three runs to cross home plate, taking an early 3-0 lead. Wabaunsee pitcher Cooper Imthurn was replaced by Chase Nelson in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs. Nelson would pitch the rest of the game for the Chargers, giving up eight hits and four runs.

Those four runs would come in the bottom of the third inning for the Ellis Railroaders. Senior right-fielder Trayton Kroeger would get things started with one out by hitting a single to get on base. Nathan Cox, followed by Junior Hernandez hit singles as well, loading up the bases for Ellis with only one out. Dalton Hensley would knock in two RBI’s on a single and be followed up by Easton Smith hitting a two-RBI double before Wabaunsee could get the next two outs. Hays baseball falls in first round of state

Maize South plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a first round victory over Hays at the 4A-1 state baseball tournament in Salina on Thursday.  The Mavericks opened the game with a double and then scored two batters later to take a 1-0 lead.  A routine ground ball with runners at second and third with two outs hit the infield grass lip, putting a tough hop on the ball.  The ground ball resulted in an error and two runs scored on the play.

Hays threatened in the third and fourth innings, but failed to score while Maize South tacked on another run to push their lead up to 4-0.  Hays scored their first run in the top of the fifth on an infield single by Palmer Hutchison with the bases loaded.  The Indians gave that run back on a home run in the bottom of the inning and trailed 5-1 after the fifth inning.

Hays plated their only other run on a infield single by Cole Murphy in the sixth, but Maize south answered back with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin of 7-2.

Coach Frank Leo

Hays ends their season at 10-13.  The top seeded Maize South Mavericks are 18-5.

Hays tallied six hits in the loss, walked four times and had one batter hit, but left nine on the base paths.  Trey Riggs took the loss for the Indians.  Palmer Hutchison and Cole Murphy each had two hits in the game.  Maize South recorded ten hits, walked six times and left eight on base.  Chase Hampton took the victory on the mound for the Mavericks.

Marion 6, TMP 5 (8 innings)

MANHATTAN, Kan.-The TMP Monarch’ Baseball team had quite the battle with Marion in the opening round of the 3A State Baseball Tournament in Manhattan.  The second seeded Monarchs opened the scoring in the top of the second inning on an RBI double from Luke Ruder.  Marion answered with a tying run in the bottom of the inning.

TMP would regain the lead, 2-1, in the third inning on an RBI single off the bat of Chase Werth.  The Monarchs would hold that lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when Marion plated three runs to take a 4-2 advantage. The score would stay that way until the top of the sixth inning when TMP tied the game with two runs thanks to some Warrior defensive miscues.

Marion continued the back and forth tilt and took the lead with one run in the bottom of the sixth.  TMP was not done as they scrapped together the tying run in the seventh inning.  The Warriors were scoreless in the bottom of the inning thanks to a double play turned by the Monarch defense.

The eighth inning wasn’t quite as pretty for TMP.  After going scoreless in the top of the inning, Marion took advantage by loading the bases in the bottom of the frame and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly.  The loss snaps the Monarch 9 game losing streak as they finish the season at 13-9.

DUSTY WASHBURN INTERVIEW

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

Royals-Yankees game postponed, rescheduled for Sept. 25

NEW YORK (AP) – The scheduled game between the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees has been postponed by rain.

The announcement was made on a wet Thursday morning in New York City about five hours before the teams were supposed to play the finale of a four-game series. The local forecast called for inclement weather much of the day.

Instead, the game will be made up on Sept. 25 at Yankee Stadium at the start of New York’s final regular-season homestand.

Struggling ace Masahiro Tanaka had been lined up to start for New York. The right-hander has allowed 14 runs and seven homers over 4 2/3 innings in his last two starts. He is 5-3 with a 6.56 ERA in nine outings this year.

Right-hander Miguel Almonte was slated to get his first major league start for the Royals. He made nine relief appearances two years ago.

Severino silences Royals

NEW YORK (AP) – Helped by a great first-inning catch that forced center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury from the game with a concussion and sprained neck, Luis Severino won for the first time in a month and led the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 3-0 on Wednesday night.

On the first pitch of the game, Ellsbury sprinted 107 feet and raised his glove above his head to catch Alcides Escobar’s fly. Ellsbury’s head jarred into the wall as the ball landed in his glove, and he crumpled to the field.

Ellsbury was checked by manager Joe Girardi and head athletic trainer Steve Donohue and remained in the game, then was replaced by Aaron Hicks starting the second.

Didi Gregorius homered against Jason Hammel (1-6) leading off the third inning, Gregorius’ seventh hit in a span of 12 at-bats.

His fastball reaching 99 mph, Severino (3-2) allowed four hits over eight innings, struck out seven, walked one and threw a career-high 114 pitches.

Dellin Betances struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

Kansas forward Mykhailiuk returning for senior season

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas forward Svi Mykhailiuk is returning for his senior season, ending months of speculation about whether he would remain in the NBA draft with a simple Instagram post on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-8 Mykhailiuk was among the most noteworthy players weighing whether to remain in the draft or return to school. He averaged 9.8 points for the Jayhawks last season, and his ability to shoot from the perimeter made many NBA scouts believe he would be selected in the draft.

But despite performing well in shooting drills during the scouting combine, Mykhailiuk did not get enough reassurance he would be selected and chose to withdraw his name by the deadline Wednesday.

His return gives the Jayhawks arguably the nation’s top backcourt next season and should position Kansas to make another run at the Final Four.
